GOAL
• Coaching after school for kids (both primary and secondary school) that need extra help in Math
• Create awareness on the importance of Math for the development of children as well as the whole community
THE CONCEPT OF TUTORING
• One volunteer tutor per child,
one hour a week
• Tutoring in a trusted environment
• Close cooperation (a partnership) between school, teacher, parent and tutor
THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY MASTERY OF MATH
• Enhances success in educational and professional career
• Develops creativity, problem solving abilities, entrepreneurship, interest in research
• Enhances motivation and self confidence
• Improves brain functions
• Important for daily chores and organizing skills

One of the key capacities for personal fulfillment, active citizenship,
social inclusion and employability in modern society
ACCORDING TO OECD
• OECD’s Survey of Adult Skills finds that:
- basic skills in Math have a major impact on individuals’ life chances
- poor Math skills severely limit access to better-paying and more-rewarding jobs
- inequality in distribution of Math skills is closely related to how wealth is shared within nations
- people with strong skills in Math are more likely to volunteer, see themselves as actors in political processes, and are even more likely to trust others.

THE TUTORING PROGRAM
• A pilot project 2014-2015
• Started in September 2014 with:
- founding of Fundashon Tur Ta Konta
- consulted experts, made plan/budget
- roadshow to reach: media, funding, companies, schoolboards, selected schools, teacher’s union, Rema Uní, Minister of Education and staff
- recruitment and training of tutors
- tutoring started in December 2014
TARGET GROUPS
• August 2015 – July 2016:
- children of groups 6, 7, 8 of primary school
- average score 4 – 6.5
- no particular learning and behavioral difficulties
- child and parents are motivated
- financially less privileged parents
• August 2016 and beyond:
- the first grades of secondary school
- improve comprehensive reading
MORE ABOUT THE CONCEPT
• School-Teacher-Parent-TurTaKonta-partnership
• Selection of students by the school based on criteria previously agreed upon
• Each student will be appointed 1 tutor for 1 hour a week during the whole school year
• The tutor and the parent will agree on the location (school, accommodation nearby or home) and the time
• The performance of every child will be recorded and followed
DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT vsUNDERPERFORMANCE
• Not all parents are capable to give or to pay for additional coaching
• Not all parents motivate their kids or have high expectations from them
• Many kids have no proper study accomodations due to bad housing conditions and poverty
• Kids living in bad neighbourhoods might get bad influence or distracted
THE ROLE OF THE PARENT
• Involvement of motivated parent, a MUST:- prerequisite for success- high expectations of parents instill self
confidence and motivation
• How?- the parent is expected to be nearby or on
call during tutoring- the tutor briefs the parent before and
after the tutoring session (about progress)
- the parent is encouraged to talk frequently with the child as well as the teacher on his performance
THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER AND SCHOOL
• The role of teacher/school:
- is committed to work with the tutor, Fundashon Tur Ta Konta and the parent to achieve success
- selects kids based on criteria previously determined
- meets regularly with tutor and parent
- provides material for the tutor and points out the areas and learning math targets on which the kid needs help
- facilitates accommodation
THE ROLE OF THE TUTOR
• The role of the tutor, the ambassador of this programme:
- is committed to guide the child for one hour a week for the entire school year
- submits himself to trainingsessions provided by Fundashon Tur Ta Konta
- stays within guidelines of school, teacher, Fundashon Tur Ta Konta
- meets regurlarly with the teacher and parents about progress
- develops a caring relation with child
THE ROLE OF FUNDASHON TUR TA KONTA
• Fundashon Tur Ta Konta:
- works closely with school, teacher and parent
- recruits and trains volunteers
- facilitates material if necessary
- matches the tutor with the school and the child
ELIGIBILITY VOLUNTEER TUTORSHIP
• Eligible for volunteer tutor:
- HAVO 5 Math/Economics, (former) teachers; persons with equivalent education
- committed for one hour a week during whole school year
- creative, flexible and patient
- communicatively and socially skilled
- good sense of humor
- at least 21
VOLUNTEER TUTOR RECRUITMENT
• Short and long term:
- public presentations and news media
- approach large companies (accounting firms, banks, a.o.) and universities to encourage their personnel/students
- direct approach of retired teachers
- campaign, website and social media
• Screening on
- background, motivation, personality and skills
VOLUNTEER TUTOR TRAINING• Note: volunteer tutors are not professional
teachers. They assist the teacher and the parent with math education of the kid- in line with the methodology of the school- without trespassing teacher/parent
responsibilities.
• Training program by experts:- tailor made for the target group- math education methods applied today- some practical didactic tips- access of webbased curriculum
information- tutors will get a guide book and additional
training if required
VOLUNTEER TUTOR TRAINING• Tips on:
- how to record the development and the progress of the child
- how to have a fruitful dialogue with parents
- how to deal with social, environmental and domestic issues
- two-monthly meeting with all tutors to exchange knowledge and experience and to discuss teacher’s and parent’s feedback
- on site guidance by experts- tutors will be encouraged to develop a
caring relationship with the child
OTHER RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS OF THE TUTOR
• A contract with tutor consisting of:
- a code of conduct
- other rights and obligations of the tutor towards the child, parents, school/teacher and Fundashon Tur Ta Konta
• An appreciation system for tutors to honor them for their work for the society

FUTURE
• Expand the target group
• Add language to the program.
• Exchange with other international organizations.
• Export the project to other islands.
• Develop a math quiz.
• Develop tutoring online.
• Organize workshops, conferences, seminars, etc.
FACTS SEPTEMBER 2014 –JULY 2015
• Starting September 2014:
- founding of Fundashon Tur Ta Konta
- original pilot plan: 30 tutors, 2 primary schools
- till June: 77 tutors, 4 primary schools
- actual 17 August: 113 tutors, 8 schools
• Place/Time of tutoring: mainly immediately after classes at school
• Experience with tutors:
- enthusiastic, proactive, creative
- close/caring relation with student
- dedicate more than one hour a week
