Sewing the FoundationsMake 80 photocopies each of foundation 1 and foundation 2 on page 6. When foundation piecing, keep the following points in mind.

%e unit you place under the presser foot consists of three layers: the paper pattern (with the marked side up) on top and two layers of fabric, right sides together, beneath the paper. Sew on the seam lines marked on the paper. Trim the seam allowance to #". Stitch the seams in consecu- tive order: the seam between fabrics 1 and 2, then the seam between fabrics 2 and 3, and so on until the foundation is complete.

A&er you sew a piece and open it, check to make sure the fabric covers its allotted place, with enough extra for the seam allowance on the next seam.

When the foundation is complete, trim along the outside cutting line.

Use 15 to 18 stitches per inch to make paper remov-al easier. If you do make a mistake and need to redo a seam, just put a piece of tape over the perforated seam on the marked side of the paper.

Do not remove the paper foundation until you are ready to sew the units into blocks. %is helps prevent the distortion that can be caused by handling.

Remember, the 'nished unit is a mirror image of the foundation.
