    PREFACE

Nothin" so Euic!ly or so certainly reveals the character of our culture and early

associations as our speech. The persistence of habits formed in youth, especially

bad habits of pronunciation, is #ell !no#n, and the correction of such faults in

adult life is a matter of considerable care and effort.

This manual has been prepared for practical use in the school-room and for the

use of families and individuals #ho value a correct pronunciation of the /n"lish

    lan"ua"e.

everal important features of this manual have ;ustified its preparation. &irst, the

number of #ords presented has been limited to those most freEuently

mispronounced, thus reducin" the boo! to a practical #or!in" field at small cost.

4any of the #ords in most boo!s on orthoepy are very rarely mispronounced,

and they serve only to cumber the #or!. Those #ho desire an exhaustive

reference boo! should consult the dictionaries. econd, the plan of exhibitin" the

#ei"ht of authorities #here authorities differ is of "reat practical value. In these

cases the typo"raphy and the arran"ement are such as to prevent confusion. It is

certainly desirable to !no# the #ei"ht of authority that prefers one of t#o or

more authoriFed pronunciations. "lance at the pa"e #ill sho# at once #hat

company #e !eep. Third, the drill columns of unmar!ed #ords in the bac! of the

boo! #ill be appreciated by every teacher. The attempt to teach orthoepy#ithout much drill and practice is of little use. It is not enou"h to tell pupils ho#

#ords are pronouncedG they must be drilled by abundant practice in order to fix

the correct pronunciation in the memory. 0nder the head of H3o# to 0se the

8oo!H this use of the drill columns is fully illustrated. &ourth, in case of those

#ords about #hose pronunciation there is no difference of opinion amon" the

authorities the fact is indicated by a star opposite these #ords. It is a source of

much satisfaction to !no# that many #ords, as albumen, address, coadjutor ,

divan, horizon, harass, idea, incisive, inquiry, leisure, opponent , etc., have only

one authoriFed pronunciation, and that all other pronunciations are #ithout any

    authority #hatever.

There is another class of #ords concernin" #hose pronunciation there is some

sli"ht difference of opinion but the #ei"ht of authority is over#helmin"ly in

favor of some one particular form. The plan of this boo! enables the student to

see at once the stren"th or #ea!ness of his position in re"ard to the

pronunciation of such #ords, and to choose the form supported by the best

authority. This may be illustrated by such #ords as abdomen, acclimate,

appendicitis, candelabrum, data,  finance, ignoramus,  gratis, etc.

There are many #ords in our lan"ua"e about #hose pronunciation the best

orthoepists and lexico"raphers differ "reatly. In some cases it is very difficult to

determine #hat form should be preferred. It is #ell that #e should !no# these#ords and the differences of opinion concernin" their pronunciation in order that

#e may "ive due credit to those #ho may use a different form of pronunciation

    from that adopted by ourselves.

HThe ultimate standard of pronunciation for the /n"lish lan"ua"e is the usa"e

that prevails amon" the best-educated portion of the people to #hom the

lan"ua"e is vernacularG or, at least, the usa"e that #ill be most "enerally

    approved by them.H

*ampbell's la# of the "ood usa"e of a #ord applies #ith much force to its

pronunciation. This la# reEuires this usa"e to be, first, reputable, or the practiceof intelli"ent and educated personsG second, national , as opposed to provincial or

forei"nG third,  present , or the usa"e of the "eneration in #hich #e live.

s representin" the best usa"e in pronunciation, ten of the best dictionaries of

the /n"lish lan"ua"e published in this country and in /n"land have been

selected for reference. The scholarship, labor, and care displayed in these #or!s

entitle them to our hi"hest respect. 4any other authorities have been freely

consulted, but the resultant of the opinions of those named is rarely chan"ed by

the consideration of any others. 4any important and obvious considerations

;ustify us in assi"nin" different values to the authorities Euoted. In determinin"

the preferred form of pronunciation in the follo#in" pa"es due #ei"ht has been"iven to all these considerations, #ith the feelin", ho#ever, that in the case of a

fe# #ords a different form from that indicated mi"ht #ith eEual propriety be

     preferred and used by others.

In cases #here there is a mar!ed difference in the /n"lish and the merican

usa"e, and yet nearly an avera"e balance, the preference has been "iven to the

    latter.

The compiler has not presumed to "ive any #ei"ht of authority #hatever to his

o#n vie#s in determinin" the pronunciation of #ords, but he has sou"ht rather

to present the vie#s of others #ho are ;ustly entitled to our hi"hest respect.

    HOW TO USE THE BOOK

uccess in teachin" this boo! depends very lar"ely upon freEuent short drills.

2aily lessons are far better than one or t#o lessons a #ee!. The plan should beto advance slo#ly and revie# rapidly. /very pupil should have a boo!.

The teacher should first assi"n a lesson of from ten to t#enty #ords daily, and

"o over the lesson #ith the pupils, pronouncin" each #ord distinctly and "ivin"

such other instruction as may be needed.

In preparin" the lesson the pupil should learn and adopt the preferred

pronunciation only, usin" the other forms for reference and "eneral information.

In the bac! of the boo! #ill be found a list of all the #ords "iven in this manualarran"ed in order correspondin" to the pa"es and numbered accordin"ly for

convenient reference, but the #ords are #ithout diacritical mar!s. This list is

intended for use in recitation and drill.

In conductin" the recitation, have the pupils in turn pronounce from this drill list

the #ords assi"ned for the lesson. hile the pupil #ho is recitin" is thus

en"a"ed, the other members of the class should follo# closely #ith their eyes

the #ords that are diacritically mar!ed in the body of the boo!, in order that the

eye memory as #ell as the ear memory may be utiliFed in fixin" the desired

impressions upon the mind. *orrections may be made in the usual #ay. /very

recitation should include a rapid revie# of from one hundred to t#o hundred ofthe #ords previously learned. This revie# is essential.

ritten recitations at stated times are desirable. The unmar!ed #ords may be

#ritten upon the blac!board, and the pupils may be reEuired to copy them,

placin" the accent and diacritical mar!s in the proper places. +ther methods #ill

    readily su""est themselves.

If the pupils are not already familiar #ith the diacritical mar!s they should be

    thorou"hly tau"ht before be"innin" #ith the #ords.
