a sermon in a Methodist pulp it in Los Angeles the first Sun

day in D ecember. Of all things, imagin ea well-known Senator saying that pa·triot ism is a false god to ma ny people! And he is rigbr.

"Love of country can transce nd th elove of God," he said, "and we must, intime of stress, avoid maki ng patriotisma relig ion."

H e said a number of other things Icould have said, myself . Among theidols professing Chris tians worshi p, hecited prosperit},. science, patriotism,peace-and some people actua lly makean ido l of the Bible, stra nge as thatmay sound. Some, he said, worship theBib le for itself, NOT as containingTRUTHS necessary for salva tio n; and, Iadd, as a GU IDE to a WAY Of LIFE.

W hat is your ido l? What are YOUreally dedicated to? Is it earni ng a Iiving-making money? W hat absorbsyour mind, your thoughts, your timewhat are you really devoted to? Is it

Gon-e-above all else? O r is it yourhobby, your wife or husband, your chi ldren, your home, your sports-or amusemenrs and entertainments? W hat do youkeep your MIND on most of the time? What most occupies your INTEREST? Isit frien ds-societ y? Is it PEOPLE--or isit THINGS?

Ir surely couldn' t be GOD, cou ld it?

Probably nor. And, if not, ' hen it is anIDOL. You are breaking the first Corn mandment. You have this other godbefore H im.

JUSt WHAT IS RELIGION?Is it merely an incidental interest,

secondary to man)' other things, such asearning a living, your home, your fami ly,your friends, hobbies, sports, enterta inments? Possibly secondary to 1V ormovies?

Rel igio n is your CONNECfION WITHGOD-your relationship wi th Hi m. Re lig ion is realizing the PURPOSE of your

life-t he reason wh y God had you to

be born-the reason you draw thebreath of air and exist- th e PURPOSEor end-GOAL of your life, and HOW to

live that life so as to arr ive there.I have written of the Seven Laws of

SUCCESS. T hey are really 'he sevenlaws of LIFE. T hey are the seven laws ofRELIGION. Yet most peo ple do not know,or practice or apply, a single one ofthem.

The first is to have the RIGHT GOALThat GOAL-God's PURPOSE for hav

ing put the breath of life in you-isthat you be born of GOD, to share withH im the GLORY of creation, to inheritHis divine NATU RE, to be LIKE HIMto do what He does, to accomplish whatHe accomplishes, enjoy wh at He EN·J OYS- Peace, H appiness, Joy, Resp lendent GLORY in LIFE EVE RLASTING.

N o other goa l could be as great. It issuperlative.

But what are JOu, now? J USt a massof matter, put together like a machine.Your present existence has to be consraruly SUSTAINED. You have to keepdrawing a breath of air into your lungsabou t every second. You have to eatfood on the average at least abou t threetimes every day. You have to take careof eliminating the impurities from food, and of bat hing and cleansing. Maybeyou don 't rea!!}' have to "brush yourteeth after every mea l" as a certain toothpaste TV commercial keeps repeatinglike a phonograph record that gac stuck. But you do have to maintain and sustain your physical anatomy to keep onexisting-and even then you are ageingand degenerat ing every day and everyyear-and the most certain thi ng in th isexistence we call "life" is tha t this ma

chine process is go ing to ru n downYOU ARE GOING TO DIE.

Actually, we have to simply keeppum ping life into ourselves constantly--daily-tO continue existing-to continue consciousness.

•What Will HAPPEN

1962?Here is a quick review of the BIG News of 1961-and a lookahead into 1962 . What is prophesied to happen-not only this

year, but through the '60' s?

WHAT'S going to hap pen thisyear? What is LI FE in Americaand British nat ions going to be

like through the '60 's?We have had the "Gay '90's." the

"Roaring '20's," and we've heard talkabout the "Soaring '60's."

But economists who have glibly talkedabout our comi ng "soaring prosperity,"and scientists, technologists, and industr ialists who have boasted about the"Fantastic Push -Button Dream World"of the late '60's and the early '70's hadbetter revise ibeir ideas!

T here's the old saying: "Man pro poses, God disposes."

No news analyst can understand themeaning of world news-and where it'sleading-unless he understands BiblicalPROPHECY.

We'd better pause here and take quickinventory. Just where do we stand?W hat's happened} chis past year, thatreally counts for the FUTURE, and WHATDOES PROPHECY SAY now lies immediately ahead this year-and this decade!

Where We·ve D rifted

A year ago we in the United Stateswere heading into an economic recession. The p receding summer-1960the president of our American advertising agency and I visited an economistwho issues a regu lar printed economicand commercial forecast bulletin forbus iness executives, This man is A. I.Boreman, of Des Moi nes, publisher ofthe Merchants Trade Journal. He wasmy immediate "boss" and tutor dur ingthe three years I was on the staff of thispublication, when I was 20 to 23 yearsof age. As I have explained in the earl ierinsta llments of the Autobiography, Ilearned much from him. He has alwaysbeen a thorough student of bus inessand econom ic conditions.

by Herbert W. Arm strong

T his was the first time I had seen Mr .Boreman in more than 35 years. He wasconverting all his assets into cash! and atype of liquid government investmentsthat could be converted quickly to cashany time . He said a depression wasgoing to strike us, beginning in theautumn of 1960, which would grow progressively worse until the depress ion of1929 to 1936 wou ld be conside red prosper ity by comparison. H e said it wouldcontinue for at least a decade.

H e had REASON.S. Yet I said to Mr.SCOtt, our advertising agent, after leaving, that I had reason to know it wasn'tgoing to happen quite that way. I knewWHAT IS PROPHESIED--and thereforeCERTAIN!

W hat happened? This time last yearMr. Boreman's recession had started allright. There was talk everywhere ofpossible big dep ression. Yet by Marchand April the United States began to

climb out of it. By Autumn, 1961, most"experts" on the nation's economy beganto talk of the "Soaring '60's." But, onceagain, the ideas and forecasts of MANwere wrong.

Whar happened dur ing 1960 and196 1 in the WORLD STRUGGLE for survival?

Khrushchev has kept the Cold Warsmoldering. He has continued to

threaten. The United States has continued to back Up--to give ground-toRETREAT.

In 1960 Khrushchev visited andtoured the Un ited States. Then he figurati vely slapped President Eisenhowerin the face, flatly refused to allow himto return the visit and come to Russia .H e made a great propaganda show ofthe U-2 incident, sabotaged the SummitConfere nce, publ icly and insolently insulted Mr. Eisenhower. All the whilehe was pu lling the strings on his lit tle

puppet, Castro, getting a Communistfootho ld a short few miles from theU nited States.

Then he jerked strings in Japan, andthe student uprising there forced Presi dent Eisen hower to cancel his visit to

Japan, with grea t loss of face in theOrient.

By the narrowest of margins, Joh nF. Kennedy was elected President of theUn ited States, and took office in January, 1961.

1961 saw the fiasco of the Cuban invasion, and the war of nerves overBerlin. T here were American ret reatsin Laos. There was violence and worldexplos ion in cent ral Afr ica in the Congo-in whic h Communists were act ive andmade gains-the West took losses. TheWest took losses in South America. TheBelgians had lost an important colony.

During these tWO years the worldentered the SPACE AGE. In 196 1 theRuss ians gained further world prestige, and shoved U.S. prestige fur ther downinto the mud, by being first to get men ,twice, into orbit in outer space andbring them back 'alive. Th e United Statesmanaged to come in second, gettingmen into space, but not into orbit. Nowthe race is on to get a man to the moon!

Ro man Empire Awakening

But the MOST IMPORTANT worldoccurrence is a development the worldis unab le properly to evaluate. It is therap id development, these past two years,of the Common Marke t in Europe.

T his is simply the first stirrings froman age-long slumber. in the symbolic"bottomless pit," of the "Hoiy" RomanEmpire. That world-domi nati ng Empi reis begin ning to awaken. That is the bigprophesied event!

Already there is persistent talk inEurope of not merely the present ECO-

NOM IC union of SIX nations, bur complere POLITICAL union of more thanthe six.

The way is being prepared for thisgigantic world-power to raise irs uglyhead and blitz out of its "bottomlesspit " to stagger and astound the world. It will be more powerful than the SovietUnion.

Khrushchev Is AFRAID!

Few recognize the real reason Khrushchev have moved this year as he has inthe Berlin crisis. Khrushchev is a 1-'eryirigbtened man! He knows noth ing, ofcourse, about what PROPHECY revealsabout this coming "United States ofEurope." Nevertheless, he is nor blind towhat he plainly SEES developing.

While the United States and Britain

The PLAIN TRUTH

gullibly and naively encourage developmenr toward a United Nati ons of Europe, feeling this will restrain Russiastupidly supposing that Germany, onceagain in POWER-and power far greate rthan either the Kaiser or Hider pas·sessed - will be buddy-buddy andfriendly as an ALLY of the United Statesand Britain. Britain has even appliedfor admission as a MEMBER of the Common Market!

Khru shchev, diabolical atheist andenemy of freedom though he is, certainly is nor so naive. He views thisthing realistically. He foresees theEuropean combine rising as an ENEMYmore powerful than he.

In the Berlin crisis, he hopes to

lessly and permanently DJVIDE GERMANY.Khrushchev also is mortally AFRAID

of United Stares military and nuclearPOWER. He knows, as well as Americanofficials, that right now the UnitedStates has power to DESTROY RUSSIA.He knows, as do American top officials, that the United States could, as of now, absorb a Soviet sneak-attack first blow, and still totally wipe Russia off the map.And where that is leading, right now, will be made clear in a moment.

TIME Is Running Ou t!

Right now, Khrushchev realizes thatTIME IS RUNNING OUT on him. TheEuropean unity is developing-FAST! Ifhe can't do something to divide thesenations and break it up quickl')', it will

Should YOU Builda FALLOUT SHELTER?

Au th ori ty Says Shelters Farce

On the other hand, many will tellyou building a "fa llout" shelter is apiteous disp lay of idiocy.

The publisher of a leading scient ificjournal plainly stated that hui lding fallOut shelters is useless. The countrywould be in dange r, not from fallout, hestated, but from blast, shock wave, andresultant fire storms.

He expla ined that the tremendous updrafts created by the kind ling of allburnable materials in county or statewide areas would cause monstrous firetornadoes, whose giant fire funnels

Religious organizations are urgingtheir congregations to build communitytype shelters .

Priests and rnuusrers say it may be"justifiable" to shoot down your neighbor, leaving him to gurgle OUt his life 'sblood at the entrance, and that it maybe "necessary ro protect your own life."

Others, soured and disgusted by thesadistic disp lay of fear and threatenedbrutality, have stated they will simply"take their chances" above ground!

Today American citizens are dividing into the "shelter" and the "no shelter" groups.

Special reports in leading newspapers, rad io and TV coverage, have shor theshelter business into overnight sensationalism.

T he Booming She lte r Business

Widespread publicity of top -level,official nature has truly alarmed manyAmericans.

Our British cousins, looking bemusedly at our feverish antics , have said, "Airraid shelter signs can be found everywhere , causing some amusement to people who remember London in 1940. Inthe never-never land of Southern Cali forn ia there is a boom in shelters , somebought from enterprising manufacturers, some products of the do-it-yourselfspiri t" (Dr. D . W. Brogan, in theMml CheJter Guardian).

Others are shocked to learn of Americans supplying their shelte rs with stocksof guns and ammunition, avowedly to

shoot down any "neighbors" who attempted to crowd in with them, in theevent of attack . As the Man cheJterGuardian acidly reported, "In the neighboring and nearly empty state of Ne-

They have talked of human spermbanks, to preserve the seed of life shouldevery man be rendered sterile from radioactivity, or should genetic disordersbreed a race of veritable monsters onearth, in the event any portion of mankind should survive a nuclear war .

But no suggestion has caught fire andswept the nation quite like the individual family fallout shelte r!

Already, as if overnight, it has become BIG BUSINESS in rhe UnitedScares.

The Survival of Civi lization

Students in a west-coast college weretold recently, "I imagine that the survivalof civi lization depends on you." Theywere then given their "problem" interse, but terrifying terms.

"The world is threatened with anuclear war so devastat ing that theearth's surface would be uninhabita blefor 100 years. Your task: Design a survival colony to keep civilization alivefor a full century."

The students were equal to the task. They outlined whole colonies, living

deep within the bowels of the earth ,producing their own dai ly necessit ies, equipped with schools, hosp itals, gymnasiums, little theaters, and machineshops. They proposed daily diets, andadvanced suggestions on how to choosewhich people shou ld survive, to preservehumanity.

Is Nuclear WAR Ahead?

W ill the re be all-our nuclear -bombwar? If so, how can you KNOW? Howcan you be sure?

There IS a source to wh ich you cango! It is the H oly, Sacred, ACCURATEW ord of your Creator! You have heardus say ma ny times, on the \'{TORLD ToMORROW program that one full thirdof the Bible is PROPHECY!

Prophecy is tomorrow 's news-beforeit happens! And it DOES talk aboutfut ure ALL·OUT NUCLEAR WARS-believe it or not!

Jesus described these fearsome days!H e foretold the chaos among nations,th e increasing natural calamaries, theimp ending NUCLEAR bomb holocaust !

He said, in answer to His disciples'q uestions about the end of the world, and His return to th is earth, "For thensha ll be GREAT TRIBULATION, such aswas not since the beg inn ing of the worldto this time, no, nor ever shall beand excep t those days should be SHORTENED," continued Jesus, "NO FLESHSHALL BE SAVED!"

Y our Savior says there w ill BE NO

Excep t the days should be CUT SHORT,said Jesus, NO flesh wou ld remain aliveon this earth!

For years, articles in th is m agazi ne

have carefully documented and fearlessly warned of impending DISASTER tostrike our peo ples !

But the disaster will be all the moreheighrened-because it will come, NOTfrom the source we so fearfully expect, bur from an ENTIRE LY DI FFERENT one!

YeS- NUCLEAR BOMBS WILL BEUSED! Your Bible says WARS are yetahead-the most utterly devastating inthe histor y of man .

What Cha nc e of SURVIVALis There?

God inspired th e prophet Ezekiel to

Canada! We are, believe it or not, theactual sons of Abraham , Isaac andJacob! ( W rite for the free booklet, "TheUnited States and the British Commonwealth in Prophecy." )

God inspi red Ezekiel to foretell theactnai percentages of our peoples whowill survive this prophesied arrack!Notice it carefully!

"A THIRD PART of thee shall die withthe pestilence, and with famine shallthey be consumed in the midst of thee, and a th ird part shall fall by the swordrou nd about thee, and I will scatt er athird part into all the winds, and I willdraw OUt a sword after them" ( Ezek.5:12).

Th is fearsome prophecy is REAL! It' sfor OUR PEOPLES-in this day!

For years, the If/ orld T omorrow program , and the pages of this magazinehave been THUNDERING th is frighteningwarning to our heedless populaces ofimpend ing national calamaties on a scalenot even imagined in our weirdestnightmares!

Ezekiel wrote this startling warn ingover 100 years after our forebears hadbeen taken capt ive, as slaves, and hadbeen mass-deport ed into Assyria!

Th e warning was NOT for rhern, atthat time-bur is written for us, NOW!

Notice ir! Pestilence. or terr ible disease epidemics are coming, and, at thesame general tim e, our peoples are goingto be str icken by great "natural" disasters in the upset WEATHER cond itionseven now grow ing more omi nous everyyear. Drough t, and the resultant faminewill take millions and millions of lives!

Th en-in our weakened and dispiri ted state, a HARSH and CRUEL enemy---one we DON'T EVEN RECOGNIZEtoday-will suddenly launch a lightning-swift ATTACK!

"In all your dwelling places theCITIES SHALL BE LA ID WASTE . .. theslain shall fall in the midst of you, andyou shall know that I am the Eternal!"(Ezek.6:6 ) .

T hink of it! ONE THIRD of our peoples will already be dead when thissudden, terribly devastating nuclear artack comes, leveling our huge mcrropolises, leaving them smoking hulks oftwisted steel and rubble, like empty, sileO[ craters in the earth!

ONE THIRD-more than SIXTY MIL·

Th en, ANOTHER ONE THIRD, anotherSIXTY MILLION will be slaughtered bythe horr ible nuclear bombing that willlay waste our lands, leaving them virtua luninhabirable desert wastes, incapableof support ing life!

God stern ly warns the remainder willbe DEPORTED in mass shipments to

strange countries, made to serve asveritable SLAVES co a cruel task masrer!

All this will happen, un less we repent

and turn ro God in tim e to prevent it.What CHANCE of escape and survival

is there-accord ing to the Divinelyinspired word of God? Only ONE OUTOF THREE!

Bur even the remaining one third areto be scattered-and God prophesied,"1 will draw our a sword after them"( Ezek. 5 :12 ). Your Bible shows thepitiful remnant of only TEN PER CENTwill be left alive after th is horribleWORLD WAR that is ahead---only oneour of every ten of our citi zens!

W har chance of survival is there? Not very much! On ly ONE chance inTEN! (Amos 5:3.)

What Cha nce For PEACE?

"But suppose," some might ask,"the re is no war- suppose nations findhow to live rogerher, in peace?" Burthat would be truly SUPPOSING!

Th e alarmi ng warn ings of today donot come from glassy-eyed, wild-haired,raving maniacs, blowing on tru mpets ofdoom, and waving their arms on "skidrow" or in the [Own square . No--thestern warn ings come from the Chiefs ofState, from the world ' leaders in everyechelon of society-and from MANY

different nations!Adlai Stevenson, America's Ambas

But still, they HOPE for peace. Howto achieve tha r lasting peace, how to

You CAN Punish YourChildren-IN LOVE!

Child beatings, severe spankings by angry parents have causedchild psychologists to recoil in horror! Ta them, pun ishmentalways means anger, and love always means no pun ishment.

Read the plain truth about proper LOVING punishment!

"I HATE you!" ''I' ll KILL you!"screams the six year old . Whatshould his parents do' Should

they punish? This question, when asked a modern

child psychologist, received the following answer, "Be aware that the child isgoing through a difficult period and cryto avoid unhappy events ."

Bur HOW? How does the parentacrually apply any such vague and unrealistic advice in deal ing with an angry, screaming child?

D iscip line Can Be Constructive

In the last number, we saw absoluteproof of the ultimate benefits of COl1·

structiue discipline. ]. Edgar Hooversaid criminals are made, not born! Wesaw revealed that most youngsters whoare legally labeled "juvenile delinquent'have had a long pattern of falsehoods, disobedience, truancy. petty stealing.

We saw the ridiculous advice fromthose of the modern school of permissiveness who advocate no punishment,no restraint, no discipline for childrenwho scream "I hate you!" at their parents.

What a paradox! The leaders of the greatest law en

forcement agencies in the land tell usthat children "left to themselves" andallowed to express anger, hatred. rebellion and indulge in all sorts of lawlessacts can easily grow up to be heinouscriminals,

The child psychologists, on the otherhand, assure us that these same childrenwill grow up to be perfect little lad iesand gentlemen. To quote again from astatement of a leading doctor made tecendy before the California Academy ofGeneral Practice, "At last," he said (following 16 years of no discipline, no re-

by Garner Ted Armstrong

straint }, "they're happy , friendly, goodtempered, self-assured and realize thatMom and Dad have finally learned something in the past few months:'

Where should lOU turn for theanswer?

Surely, if you have been followingthis series of artic les on child rearing, you have seen the answer clearly provedand documented by now! It lies in thestatistics of our courts and police departrnen rs, which absolutely PROVE thatthe end result of permissive child rearing is a frustrated, mixed-up, rebellious, monstrous child who is apt to becomea hardened crim inal!

Chi ldren most definitely should bedisciplined!

They should be disciplined oftellbut always IN LOVE . Discipline andpunishment are some of the most valuable tools available to parents for thepositive and loving teaching of theirlittle children,

Improper Punishment

Punishment should never be merelynegative-but ALWAYS, without fail, accompanied by positive teaching. Theright action, the right method, whichis expected of the child, should bedearly shown him- not only the wrongones.

Because of certain abuses in punishment, child psychologists have advocated a swing to the opposite end ofthe pendulum-that of no punishmentwhatsoever!

They have observed parents ut ilizingphysical punishment as a constantnegative measure-but omitting theconstructive, positive teaching. Someparents, who arc actually unqualifiedto be parents, are prone to punish their~hildren in the heat of anger, with

hardness and cruelty. Rather tha n inStilling into rhe child the healthy "fear"which is right and good-not "terror,"these parents do cause children co buildup feelings of resentment and ange r.

They will probably find their children using lying to escape punishment, and develop ing into cheats and childcriminals!

Seeing these abuses in the punishmentof children, many have assumed thatall punishment muse be wrong!

This is simp ly untrue, God plainlysays, "Children, OBEY your parents inthe Lord, for chis is right. Honour thyfather and mother, which is the firstcommandment with promise; 'th at itmay be well with thee, and thou may·est live long on the earth' and ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, butbring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Eph. 6:1 -4) ,

Notice, God says do nor provoke yourchildren to wrath!

Bur a constant attitude of negativism~f only saying "No!" and neversaying "Yesl 't-c-of only showing a childwhat he should NOT do, and nevershowing him what he can and shoulddo--punishing only in a NEGATIVE waywill, in the long run, "provoke yourchildren to wrath !"

God always punishes His children inLOVE-never in anger and wrath! Notice how Jeremiah prayed : "0 Lord, 1know that the way of man is not inhimself: it is not in man that walkethto direct his steps. 0 Lord. correct me,but with judgment ; not in thine anger, lese rhou bring me co nothing" (Jer.10: 23-24 ),

God's very nature is love! Yet, wehave read in past numbers that Godsays He punisbes every son that Hetruly LOVES! Jeremiah prayed for pu,,-

Page 10

ishment . But he wanted God to pun ishhim in judgment, in mercy, and inLOVE-not in ange r.

Most parents usually punish childrenonly when those children have driventhem to it. They are punishing becausethey are literally trying to "get back at"their children and are angry becausetheir child has done something whichhas disturbed them .

Th is is improper punishment, andwill never bring the right result.

Another danger in punishment isleaving the child immediately after thepunishment to himself-and leavinghim with the impression that he is stillguilty.

The positive type of punishmentalways carries with it the automaticunderstanding that the child is now[orgioen for his wrong act ion, and isnow in the good graces of his parents!

Only by parents carefully explainingthis to the ir children, and showing thatthey are punishing in love, with judgrnenr and wisdom , using great discretion, will they avoid some of these dangers in pun ishment.

One "authority" assures us that pun ishment is "the end step in a long courseof happenings that has carried bothparents and children away from thepositive feelings of love and understanding" (The Complete Book ofMotbercraft, Parents' Institute, page365). Perhaps, in many cases, it is.

Howev er, if punishment is done IN

LOVE, if chi ldren are always shown somepositive affection after punishment, thisstatement becomes completely untrue.

You will be surprised how often achild will thoroughly repent nf hiswrong action and assure you that he issorry for his wrong deed, throwing hisarms around you and telli ng you howmuch he loves you when you punishin an attitude of love, and let him knowthat the punishment carries forgivenesswith it .

NEVER Beat a Child!

Today, any case of child beating issensational.

Newspapers and magaz ines havewidely published certa in horrifyingabuses of children by berserk parenrswho were tota lly unfit and unqualified

The PLAIN TRUTH

to be parents. As a result , a school of"do-gccders" has arisen who regard anyform of punishment as an extreme. Theysay that some parents "recommend theindiscriminate use of corporal pu nishment with the cruelty and sadist ic satisfaction that is frightening" and say thatmost parents "turn to th is extreme asa last resort, and because they think thatnoth ing else will work" (The CompleteBook of Mothercraft, Parents' Institute, page 365).

Let's really understand! There is never, under any circumstances, a time to BEAT

a child. A child should NEVER, underany circumstances, be punished in anger!A child should never be bruised, orin jured !

Bur stating this does not justify thearguments of some "extremists" who, like the never-ending pendulum, swingfrom one opposite extreme to another. To them, the very word "punishment"MEANS a cruel , sadistic BEATING! Oneaurhor went so far as to say, as alreadyquoted, "The word 'punishment ' shouldnot appear in our dict ionaries except asan obsolete word, and I believe thisshould be JUSt as true in the fieldof crim inology as in that of childreari ng . .. why then should the parents. . . ever punish in the old Biblicalsense?" (Psychological Care of Infantand Child, Watson, pages 63-65) .

Do you see? Th is author cannot bringhimself to conceive of PROPER punishment, done in loire, in a right manner, and at the right time! Bur punishmentcan be done correctly!

What Effective PunishmentShould Accomplish

Any type of punishment, whet her aphysical spanking, deprivation of pri vilege, or other type, must always suitthe offense. It must, at all costs, beprompt, and must never be done unlesspreceded by a warning. It must neverbe done in anger- bur it must alwaysbe felt!

Effective punishment is never "temporary." It is aimed, not at temporarilyquieting a child, or causing him to discont inue some annoying act, bur at thelong-range goals of establishing theHABIT of obedience, proper self-cont roland self-discip line.

January, 1962

In ordi nary cases, sta tes one authority, corpora l punishment is unnecessary afterthe younger years of childhood. At anyage, it is, they stress, a tempora rymeasure. We have acr been successfulin our training until the child obeysfrom CHOICE, and "from ideals that havebeen developed and not because of fearof physical punishment ' (Training Children, Pyle, p. 172 ) .

If parents have applied effecti;;e punishment in the early years, the [ormatweyears, and "bent the twig" before itbecomes a gnarled, huge, unyieldingtree, then punishment is tru ly a temporary measure.

R owever, if loving, TEMPORARYparental punishment does not insti ll trueself-discipline, and the proper idealsand morals-then society may well inflict much harsher, and far more permanent punishment on that same childwho has become a hardened criminal/T he gas chambers of our land are prettypermanent !

Remember, HABITS MUST BE FORMED.Corporal punishment, done in discretionand love, must take the place of highe rmotives when the child is TOO YOUNGto really know the difference betweenright and wrong.

Children learn by HABIT. Habits mustbe FORMED in a child!

W hen the child is ent irely too youngto discern right from wrong , good fromevil, his parents have the God -given respons ibiliry to make his decisions forhim.

This must be done in a workab le,practical manner!

In one of the first installments of thisseries, a quotation appea red from a childpsychologist advocating surrounding achild with "interesting objects" to takehis interest away from harmful habits .

Let's see how workable, how sensiblethis teachi ng really is, if any parentwould dare to follow it!

"The parent's at titude should be positive, should be that of the instructor. .. by surrounding the child constantlywith objects that it can build up andmanipulate, we soon get it to formhabits of working with objects that it hasa right to work with. In this way, 'forbidden ' objects come gradually to lose their

By mid-May, 1941, the weekly lisren ing audience, over the threestations in Eugene and Portland,

Oregon, and in Seattle, had grown toa quarter of a milli on people.

Th at seemed a huge audience. Indeed,it war a huge audience. The work ofGod, having been Started so very smallwas,as stated before, growing up.

The circulation of T he Plain Truthhad gone up to 5,000 cop ies.

We had started on the air in Seattle,on 1,000-ware KRSC, on September 15,1940. By February, 1941, the mailresponse indicated a listening audienceof more than 150,000. Beginning withthe issue of August-Seprernber, 1940,The Plain Truth had "grown up" froma mimeographed paper to a 16-pageprinted magazine, bimonthly. By midMay we were receiving between 200and 300 letters from radio listenersevery week, and mailing OUt 5,000copies of The Pial" Truth.

Office O utgrown

Now we experienced "growing pains"in real earnest. Now we really did havea tremendous problem on our hands.

It was becoming an utter impossibili ty longer to continue handling thisvolume of mail , and a S,OOO-name mailing list, and mailing Out the 5,000copies, without equipment in rhar unventil ated inside office room.

For seven years we had Struggledto build this work from nothing to irs1941 size, without equi pment. We hadpaid 55 per month rent for thi s smallinside room. It was wit hout win dows, without vent ilation, except for rwotransoms. One transom opened intothe hall-way. The other ope ned intoa large adjoining room where laborunio n meetings were held. The onlyventilation we received through this

eirher by hand, or by myself on rheone and only secondhand typewriter.

Afrer going on KRSC in Seattle, rhisbecame an impossible task for Mrs.Armstrong and me, without help. Twicewe had had one girl or woman helpingin the office, but now we had to askseveral church brethren for volunteerhelp to come to the office to addresswrappers, and help us roll rhem andstamp for mailing.

Then on May 14, 1941, a wonderfulthing happened. A larger, sun-lit officebecame available to us. It was in the oldl00F Building in Eugene, on the rhirdfloor, rear nor theas t corner. There wasan inner corner room, and a doublesize outer room opening off the hallway. I could nor alford to rent borhrooms, bur the building manager offered to let me have the inner corneroffice for $10 per month. He also saidwe could use the larger outer office parrtime, if necessary, until we could affordto rem the whole thing. A much largeradjoining room was available for futurerental, when need and finance arrived.

This office had nice large windawssunlight- fresh air.

Let me tell you right here, I neverwas so grateful for sunlight and freshair in all my life. I had never beforerealized how thankful we should be forsunlight and fresh air. That is one blessing most people have, but usually rakefor granted without any rhanksgiving! How about you?

I now managed to buy an office desk-after seven years. That same deskwas used in the television program in1955, seen by hun dreds nf rhnusands, coast to coast. I continued to use it asmy desk, after moving the headquartersof the work to Pasadena, until 1955 or1956. Then ir became rhe desk used bymy son, Garner Ted Armstrong, untilthe summer of 1961. Ir is srill doingservice for one of God's ministers.

O ur First Equipment

This desk was the very beginning ofnecessary equipment to administer theW ork of God. We had been forced to

wait seven years for it.Abour the time of moving to this

larger office, I managed to buy an oldantiquated secondhand foot-poweredaddressing machine. With it we installed

The PLAIN TRUTH

the first beginning of the Elliorr sysremof stencils for the mailing list. Thesestencils are cur on a typewriter, or machine very similar to a typewriter.

That old foot-powered addressing machine made so much noise that thetenants on the floor below complainedvigorously. Perhaps our many employestoday working in the large modern sunlit air-conditioned mailing room of theAmbassador College Press building, nowusing the same highly efficient, modernIBM equipment that is used by suchmass-circulation magazines as liFE,Look, Saturday Evening Post, and Ladies'Home Journal, may utter a momentaryprayer of gratitude to the Great Godwho has provided them wirh the veryfinest and most efficient equipment theworld affords.

I do nor remember, now, what Ipaid for that ancient old addressing rnachine. I believe we still have it storedsomewhere around the Ambassador College campus. Perhaps we should get outsome of this ancient crude equipmentand form a small museum of our own!Ir probably cost all of $10 or $15Mrs. Armstrong says she remembers itwas $15-we could nor have affordedmore, then. I'm sure many of our ern

ployes would laugh ar ir, today. But itwas no laughing matter, then. Westruggled along seven years to have it.And I very sincerely THANKED GOD forit!

Think of just the twO of us-wirh arrimes the help of a girl who knew noshorthand and could net use a typewriter-handling and answering an average of 250 Ietrers a week, beside allthe other things Mrs. Armstrong andI had to do! Then having to call in ahalf dozen church brethren for volunteerhelp in addressing 5,000 copies of ThePlain Truth BY HAND. And in rhosedays we had to paste l- cent stamps onevery copy. Mrs. Armstrong had tocook paste of flour and water at homeand bring it to the office to paste thosewrappers.

About the time we moved to thisnew office, I managed to employ a secretary. I believe she started ar $10 perweek. Also, I now purchased my firsrfiling cabinet. Ir was a heavy cardboardcabinet, reinforced at corners and edgeswith very thin metal. I still have to go

January, 1962

to one of our storage rooms, pull outthe cardboard drawer of rhis filing cabinet, and check through dusty papers, letters, and records of those days forthe facrnal material that I have beenwriting in this Aurobiogrephy.

If anyone doubts thar rhis workstarred the very smallest, let him realizewe had ro wait seven years for thiscardboard file ..:abinet-and then wecould afford ONLY THE ONE. How manymodern steel filing cabinets do we haveTODAY! I simply don't know-but irmust be hundreds-not only at Pasadena Headquarters, in many differentbuildings on the campus, and in dozensand scores of offices, bur also at ourbranch offices in Texas, in England, inAustralia, in Canada, and, soon, in SouthAfrica!

This great Work of God not onlystarted small. It grew very gradually .There was no mushroom growth! Butthere was steady and c01JtinuouJ growth-30% a year on the average. Thatmeans DOUBLING in size of operation, and in power and influence of the work, every 2 years 7'r2 months! As this iswritten, in December, 1961, we are nearing the dose of another calendar yearand the operation in every phase is JUSt30% larger rhan ir was in 1960!

Writing these things makes me realize HOW GRATEFUL we should beHOW MUCH we have to THANK GODfor! And all this God has done withoutrequests for money on the air, or in anyof our literature-c-all of which is givenFIlEE, upon request.

New Consciousness of Mission

About this time God impressed onmy mind His real meaning of theprophecies in Ezekiel 33:1-19. and3:17-21. The true significance of theentire Book of Ezekiel had been revealed for some time. But now, suddenly,it took on immediate, and specific andpersonal significance.

I had seen thar Ezekiel was a prophet, with a message for the FUTURE. Hehimself was in the captivity of the Houseof JUDAH-rhe Jews, from 604 to 585B.C. But he was not ser a prophet with amessage to rhese people ar all. Theoriginal nation Israel had been dividedafter Solomon's death into two nations. The northern Kingdom of TEN TRIBES

Page 13: a magazzne understanding Truth 19… · JANUARY, 1962 of understanding _.'-~,,--Wide World Photo BACKTO THE CAVES? A frenzied campaign to encourage building follout shelters has led

January, 1962

had its capital, not at Jerusalem, but atSamaria. It was called The HOUSE OF

ISRAEL- not Judah. T he Kingdom ofIsrael had been invaded and conqueredby King Shalmaneser of Assyria 721718 B.C.-about 120 to 135 years bef orethe Jewish cap tivity by Babylon.

The people of the House of Israelhad been uprooted from their homes, their farms and cities, and taken to thesouthern shores of the Caspian Sea. BU[by the time of the Babylonish captivityof Judah, in Ezekiel's day, the House ofIsrael had long since migrated northwest to N orthwestern Europe and theBritish Isles.

Ezekiel was made a prophet to thisnation- not the nation of Judah amongwhose captives he lived. His messagewas a warning of INVASION and TOTAL

DESTRUCfION OF THE NATION'S

CITIES. That invasion was for the farfuture. The prophecy came more than120 years after Israel already bad beeninvaded and conquered.

God did not say, "Warn the peoplewhere you are." He said: "Son of man,I SEND THEE TO" the House of Israel.God said : "GO" from where Ezekielwas, with JUDAH-"GO, get thee UNTO

THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL."But Ezekiel did not go. HE COULDN'T!

He was a CAPTIVE of the Chaldeans-aslave. And no such gigantic military invasion has ever befallen the Kingdomof ISRAEL since Ezekiel's prophecy waswritten! The prophecies of the Bibleare nearly all DUAL. They have a twofold fulfillment- the one , often in OldTestament times, a type of the second,in these end-time days. The Assyriancaptivity, more than a century beforethe prophecy, was the type. The warningis for our day!

Again, there is a story-flow-a rimesequence running through the Book ofEzekiel. Other portions of the Bookshow the prophecies pertain to the timeshortly prior ro the second coming ofChrist. The 40th chapter to the end ofthe Book deals with millennial events, yet future.

So now I saw Ezekiel was set aWATCHMAN-to watch internationalconditions as well as God's propheciesand when this invasion is preparing, andnear, shortly prior to Christ's coming toRULE THE WORLD, he is to WARN the

The PLAIN TRUTH

people who had migrated, in Ezekiel'sday, to northwestern Europe and theBritish Isles! But Ezekiel never carriedtbat warning! It was not for HIS TIME!

H e was used merely to WR ITE IT! Itnow became plain to me that God wasto use a modern 20th-century "Ezekiel"to shout this WARNING.

The realization flashed to my mindwith terrific impact that in WORLD WAR

II-already then under way-Americabeing then drawn d oser to participation-that I could see this "sword" of WARcoming! I looked around. No ONE hadever sounded this warning! No one wasthen sounding it! I saw numerousprophecies showing how terribly God isgoing to punish America and the BritishCommonwealth people for our apostasyfrom Him. I saw our sins, individuallyand nationally. fast increasing!

The conviction came. IF God openeddoors for the MASS·PROCLAMATfO N ofHis Gospel, and of this warning, nationwide, I would walk through those doorsand proclaim God 's Message faithfully,as long as He gave me guidance, power, and the means.

I had no illusions that I was chosento be the "modern Ezekiel" to proclaimthis message. But I did know that noone was sounding this alarm. I didplainly see this sword of destruction andpunishment coming. I knew the timewas near . Perhaps, with World War IIwell under way. it was even then uponus. We could not, then, foresee that Godwould grant another recess period inthe series of world wars before the finalround to end at "Armageddon."

And I did see, plainly, that God said:"IF the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the peo ple be not warned" that God would re quire the blood of the people-and nowwhole peoples--at the watchman's hand!

That was a stern warning to me. Atleast I was one of the watchmen whodid see it coming! God had alreadyplaced the broadcasting facilities of threeradio stations at my disposal. A quarterof a million people now heard my voiceweekly. Possibly ten or fifteen thousandpeople read the 5,000 copies of ThePlain Truth.

Of course I had been sound ing thiswarning all along-but only in thePacific Northwest. Now I began to see

Page 13

that God intended to send it to ALL

ISRAEL. And H e had revealed ro methat that meant, today, the UnitedStates, the British Commonwealth, andthe nations of northwestern Europe. Theidea of my being used, personally, inreaching Britain and these other countries did not yet take sharp focus in mymind. But I did, now, for the first time, beg in to think actively and definitelyabout this work expanding to the entireUnited States!

Door Opens to Reac h NATION

God works Out His purposes on Hisdefinite time-schedule. This vision ofurgency to warn the whole nation andrenewed sense of mission came JUStwhen God was ready to OPEN DOORS

NATIONALLY!

In J une that year-1941-Mrs. Armstrong's sister and a friend were planning a trip to Detroit to take deliveryon a new car. Somehow the suggestioncame for Mrs. Armstrong and me-withthem-to drive our new car as far asChicago.

Immediately it flashed to my mindthat in Des Moines, Iowa, where I hadbeen born and reared, was an exclusivechannel SO,OOO-watt radio station,WHO. In those days I could tune it inany night out on the Pacific Coast. Onlyeight stations had exclusive channelsno other station on the continent ontheir channels. For our purpose, I knewthat W H O was then the most valuableand desirable station in all the UnitedStates for our purpose-located not farfrom the geographical center of thenation.

Normally, I knew our chances of obtaining time on such a high prestigestation were exactly nil. But then I remembered my uncle, Frank Armstrong, youngest brother of my father. For yearshe had been the leading advertisingman in the state of Iowa. Perhaps hisinfluence might help swing open themighty door of W HO. Of course, wecould not afford to buy time on so powerful a station-but I would see aboutit, anyway.

Let me say here, for the benefit ofthose not familiar with the radlo-television field, there is a vast difference in50,000-watt rad io stations. 50,000 is themaximum wattage allowed by law in the

Page 14: a magazzne understanding Truth 19… · JANUARY, 1962 of understanding _.'-~,,--Wide World Photo BACKTO THE CAVES? A frenzied campaign to encourage building follout shelters has led

Page 14

United States. But some 50,OOO-watt stations have far less coverage than others. The quality of equipment, the locationof the transmitter, and other factorsmake all the difference. But W HO was-and is---one of the very top prestigestations. Its signal was phenomenal. Today, there are probably three to fivetimes as many stations on the air, asthen. Today none of these first-water stations reaches OUt like they did then .

So we drove our new DeSoto car to

Chicago, where the girls took a bus to

Detroit. Then we stopped at Des Moineson the return tr ip.

I had not seen my uncle for IS years. We had arranged by telephone to havea family get-cogerher at the home of mycousin-his daughter-and her husband,in Indianola, a county seat town 30miles south of Des Moines.

I suppose we were all a little surprised to observe the change that hadtaken place in the appearance of eachof us-e-after 15 years.

We visited old friends of both mywife and myself around Indianola andDes Moines for a few days.

While there, my uncle called the general manager of W HO on the telephone, told him about me, and askedhim to see me. After I explai ned abourour program, he said he could clear alate Sunday night time, at 11 P.~L, except for one Sunday night each month. The owner of W HO was Col. B. J.Palmer, owner of the Palmer Chiropractic Institute at Davenport, Iowa.Col. Palmer reserved the time of 11 toII: 30 P.M. on one Sunday night ofeach month for a personal talk by himself. Mr. Mailand, the station's manager, offered me the other three or four Sunday nights at this same hour, at the verylow COSt, for so powerful a station. ofa litt le over $60 per half hour.

This was a tremendous opportunity-but it was still beyond our reach. Itold Mr. Mailand we were nor yet readyfor it, but hoped to be by the followingyear. I had felt we ought to go on a LosAngeles station first. anyway. But now, definitely, our vision expanded to broadcasting coast to coast nationally, assoon as we could grow to it.

Los Angeles Door Opens

We had planned to swing by Los An-

geles on our way home to investigatepossibilities on radio stat ions there.

If Pan land and Seattle radio stat ionshad been hostile to programming religious broadcasts, I found Los Angeleseven more so--although there were alarge number of religious programs onthe air in Los Angeles.

Station KNX, the powerful 50,000watt CBS outlet, carried Dr. Maclennan of the Hollywood PresbyterianChurch, John Mathews, who billed himself as "the Shepherd of the Air" andCharles E. Fuller of "The Old FashionedRevival Hour:' I had listened quiteregula rly to all three, since KN X camein like a local station at night in Eugene.

But I did not even contact KNX. Iknew it was completely beyond ourfinancial ability. To me, in those days, these three radio broadcasters on KNXwere real "Big Time." On the humanlevel they seemed to me as giants, andI as a dwarf, so low beside them I wouldnot have presumed to encroach on theirvaluable time by attem pt ing to meet andshake hands with them. Yet, on thespir itual plane, I realized that God hadgiven me the Message of His TRUE

GOSPEL which was 1101 being preached, anywhere, except on our program . ButI felt very unimportant in my own eyes.

I found stations in Los Angeles closing their doors on religious broadcasts.Yet, when I went over to KMTR (it isnow KLAC), I found the manager, Mr.Ken Tinkham, friendly. He told me thestation was cutting down on religiousprograms, though the stat ion still carriedseveral. It was only a 1,OOO-watt stat ion,but Mr. Tinkham explained how thetransmitter was directly over an undergrou nd river, which had the rather freakeffect of giving their signal a powerequal to about 40,000 watts. Under ground river or not, I found it true thatthe station then had a better signalthan any station in Los Angeles, exceptthe 50,OOO-watt stations. It was heardlike a local station in San Diego, 120miles away, and even in Bakersfield, which is over the mountains.

As we talked, I could sense Mr. Tinkham warming up to Mrs. Armstrongand me. Finally, he said he would try, later, to open up a Sunday morni ng timefor me. I had told him we were not yetready to go on the air in Los Angeles.

January, 1962

An IS-Day Fast

The long strain of building the workthrough seven and a half years, withoutfacilities or financial resources, had beentaking irs toll physically. 1 had beenlosing sleep. The constant driving onhigh tension to keep up wit h the growing work had told on my nerves. Theweekly tr ips of 650 miles to Seattle andback added to the grind.

So, on returning to Eugene, Mrs.Armstrong and I, with our boys, wentover on the Oregon Coast to one of thelittle-frequented beaches, and rented asmall cabin. There I went on an 18~day

fast for both physical and spiri tual recharging. An unfit man cannot accomplish much. I returned to the new officein Eugene, August 12th, 1941, refreshedand renewed, with new vigor. With theKMTR and the WHO doors standingajar, JUSt waiting to open to us, therewas now redoubled incentive to pushforward.

First Airplane Flight

By December of that year, I decidedto ease the strain of those long drivesto Seattle-at least part of the time.Consequently on Saturd ay night, December 6th, I left my car in Portland, andtook the train to Seattle. I had foundthat the overnigh t tra in arrived inSeattle in time for the 8:30 broadcastat KRSC, if it was on time.

But on that part icular Sunday morning, the train was late. Bur by gettingoff at Tacoma, and hiring a taxicab,I was able to arrive on time.

I had found that I could take a planeleaving Seattle somewhere around noon, get ting me back to Portland in time forthe 4 P.M. broadcast on KWJJ. Thiswas the first time in my life I had everbeen up in an airplane.

I shall never forget that flight . About]5 minutes after take-off, I noticed thecaptain enter the passenger cabin. Heknelt beside the passengers in the frontseats, and in low tones spoke to them. Then he repeated this to those in thesecond row. My curiosity was aroused.

When he came to me, he said he hadJUSt received word over the plane'sradio that the Japanese had bombedPearl Harbor that morning, December7th- that the Uni ted States Navy fleet

soon be TOO LATE!Bur, at the same time, President Ken

nedy, by late autumn 1961, began to

realize that TIME IS RUNNING OUT onthe United States, too!

As of NOW, as stated above, the UnitedStates is far ahead of Russia in nuclearweapons, hydrogen-bomb stockpile, total delivery-power of these weaponsby missiles, long-range bombers, medium-range and fighter bombers, submarine missiles.

The RESULT : Th e United States, today, CAN DESTROY RUSSIA. But Russia CAN'T destroy America!

HOWEVER, President Kennedy knowsthat, later in the '60's, this balance infavor of the Unit ed States will be reduced or wiped out. Further, the UnitedStates has been RETREATING - losingground-in this Cold W ar to the pointof diminishing returns. The UnitedStates cannot go on backing up, lett ingRussia take the initiative forever without losing everything! There is a limitto HOW FAR America can back downand give ground to the Soviet Union, especially with Russia catching up innuclear power.

By early winter, 1961, Mr. Kennedybegan to realize the U.S. has backed up,and allowed Khru shchev to take theinitiative, about as far as it DARES.

European nation s, furth ermore, areworried-LOSING FAITH in relying onthe United States to prorecr them fromRussia . Washington has said officiallythat Amer ica can let Russia strike thefirst blow, and still destroy Russia beforeshe can deliver a second blow. But whatEuropean nations are worried about isth is: Suppose that first blow is NOTdelivered against UNITED STATES cities-but against EUROPE? Suppose Khrushchev's surpri se sneak attack destroysParis, Rome, Brussels, London, Frankfort,Essen and Dusseldorf and Munich andHamburg-and their forces take overWest Berlin ?

Suppose Amer ica is left unharmed .European nat ions want to know-

Th e PLAIN TRUTH

WOULD THE UNITED STATES IMMEDI·ATELY UNLEASH ITS SUPERIOR POWERAND DESTROY RUSSIA, before the Sovietcould fmiJh conquering all Europe?

Russia could make an agreement onBerlin , to quiet We stern fears, thenbreak her agreement as she always does, and suddenly destroy and conquerEurope.

ALL THESE ARE THE REASONS whythe Uni ted States has suddenly stiffenedits policy in the cold war. By late N ovember, Me. Kennedy was endeavoringto lay plans to take the initiative inthe cold war, and let RUSSIA start backing up a little.

Anoth er setback for the West~ during 1961, was the secession of the Unionof South Africa from the British Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is falling apart. In this century Britain haslost India, and been stripped of mostof her possessions and colonies aroundthe world that made her GREATBritain. Her wealth came from these. She is no longer Great. She is now begging for entrance into the EuropeanCommon Market, trying to maneuverto make it at most an association ofindependent nations, rather than aFascist dictator-rul ed EMPIRE.

At the turn of the year- with twoyears of the '60's already gone-theseare the factors in the tense disturbedworld situation which puts the pressureof serious URGENCY on President Kennedy. It is imperative that he now takesuch action as to leave no doubt, inEuropean mind s- and in Khruschev'smind- about how the Uni ted Stateswould act if the Soviet makes certainovert moves.

The lines are tightening. A SHOW·DOWN looms ahead.

Yet Biblical PROPHECIES have nothing to say about any nuclear TOTALWAR with Russia at this . ime.

And Now-I962-I970

Where do we go from here? Will Mr. Kennedy be able to con-

Page 15

vince the European nations that theymay safely rely on U.S. power to protect them from Russia?

Will the 1961 upsurge from recession continue on into a NEW BOOM ofPROSPERI1Y?

Will Americans, Canadians, British, and Australians and the peoples of theWes tern world soon be living in theDREAMWORLD of magic push-buttons,almost total leisure, fabulous luxury, fantast ic new gadgets, before 1970?

W ill men be making regular holidaytrips to the moon and back before theend of the '60's?

Business in the United Srares, during1961, soared our of the recession status, and year's turn finds us at record highsin most phases. Incomes are breakingrecords. Spending is breaking records.Christmas trade-and it WAS 'Itrade"_the buying of presents to trade backand forth between people honoring apagan day that IS NOT Christ's birthday, which Chri stians are not supposed to

observe anyway- but this TRADINGbroke all records.

Are we nor, rhen, headed for a BOOMof prosperity ?

WE ARE N OT!For some years, there undoubtedly

will be comparative prosperity, in theUnited States. The momentum of Arnerican industry-the productivity of THEMACHINE- the constant developmentof more and NEW KINDS of MACHINESwhich vastly increase production perman-hour-these factors will maintaina reasonable prosperi ty through most-perhaps a11-of the '60's.

The Alarming Factor

Bur there is one over-all alarmingfactor. It seems most economists andbusinessmen do nor quite grasp it andits full import yet.

That is the competition from Germany and Europe-and from Japan, and from Russia. Especially Germanyand Western Europe are on the way to

an unprecedented upsurge of prosperity. Here is the reason:Up to now the United States has,

since the turn of the century, spurtedto a state of national prosper ity neverbefore reached in any nation. W HY?The answer has been machine produc-

Page 16: a magazzne understanding Truth 19… · JANUARY, 1962 of understanding _.'-~,,--Wide World Photo BACKTO THE CAVES? A frenzied campaign to encourage building follout shelters has led

Page 16

tion . America became industrializedwith mass machin e prod uction to adegree far beyond any other nation.

American laborers did not workharder-they worked less hard, keptshortening hours, increasing pay. Ofcourse pr ices rose. But still reel wages-the amount of goods and services aweek's labor would purchase-kept rising. Finally America had a standard ofluxury living never known by any othernation.

In spite of constant ly rising wagescales, machine mass production enabled the U.S. to produce not only moregoods, but lower-cost goods, than othernations. In world market s, Other nationscould nor compete. This built theAmeri can economy.

Bur now something is happening. In W estern Europe-in Japan, and to

a lesser extent, in Russia, mass machineproducti on is spiralling upward, Germany leads, but France, Italy and othernations are experiencing the thrill ofnew prosperi ty, too. Th e U.S. gave allthis its pump -priming start and impetus through the billions of dollarspumped into Europe by the MarshallPlan.

N ow Europe is rapid ly increasing itsmachine production. But the ONE FACTOR we are too naive to see in Americaand Britain is that in Europe labor isworki ng harder, more energetically, with more zeal, longer hours, and atfar lower wages than the Americanstandard.

They may not be working for lowerwages than British workmen-bur inEurop e they go to work! with an occasional shore coffee-break; whereas, inBritain, they go to teal with an occasional work-break. It takes forever, itseems, in Britain, before they get around"to crackin."

The remit : Even though Britain alsois going into vastly increased machineproduction, Germany and western Europe nations and Japan (a nd Russia )actually are out-producing Britain, at farlower labor cost-simply because in thosecountries workmen really WOR K.Theyproduce more for their week's wages. They work with a PURPOSE.

There seems to be no sense of national PURPOSE in America or Britain.

The thing that is happ ening, then,

Tbe PLAIN TRUTH

is that even on similar wage-levelsGermany, France Italy, Japan, Russia, are out-producing Britain; and, becausetheir workmen work more diligently, producing MORE per dollar (or perpound, per mark, per franc, erc.) thesenation s are ente ring world mark ets incompetition with Britain and Americawith LOWER-COST GOODS!

Even with the American mass rnachine-production, these Other nationsare fast catching up with the Uni tedStates in machiHe~product ion, effectingthe same economies of this mass production of the machine-but wi th aLABOR COST only a third to a half thatof American labor!

THAT IS THE ALARM ING FACTOR!

Where This Is Leading

In America, labor still plans to keepright on striking for higher pay andshorter hours. There is no sign of anyturn from that fatal economic policy ofgiving less, demanding and taking more.

Y hen what happens? When industryis forced to pay higher wages for goodsproduced, it is also forced to do one ofrwc thin gs-either pass this added production cost on to the public by raisingprices, or take a reduction in profitswhich soon leads to NO profits, thenLOSING MONEY and going out of business.

Today American industry is at theCROSS-ROADS! What this nation faces,in 1962 and 1963- and even more andmore as the 60's roll by-is mountingcompetit ion against LOWER COST PRODUCTION OF GOODS from the EuropeanComm on Market nations, from Japan, and from Russia.

If Amer ican business passes its risingproduction cost on in higher-pricedgoods to the consumer, IT WILL NOTSURVIVE IN THE COMPETITION AGAINSTTHE LOWER~COST GOODS FROM OTHERNATIONS.

Already AMERICAN lNDUSTRY ANDAMERICAN COMMERCE IS FINDING ITSPROFITS ALARMINGLY REDUCED. American businessmen are becomin g seriouslyalarmed. Thi s will begin to affect thesrock market. Investors will begin to doas Mr. Boreman did in the summer ofI960-sell their stocks and bnnds, evenat a loss- get all rhey can our of theirinvestments while the gett ing is still

good. Then who is going to finance newbusinesses, or expansion of present businesses?

Capital will then go into hiding .Factories will begin to close. Th e work men who listened to the insane sirensong of their labor leaders to keepstriking for higher pay and shorterhours and more benefits-getting MOREthan they produce-will begin to findthemselves OUT OF JOBS.

Retai l stores will become vacant.American business will be unable tocompete in foreign markets . MUCH ofour prosperity that WE ALL NOW ENJOY is coming to us because Ameri cancompanies do business around the world .Whether I go to England, Germany,France, Egyp t, or Iraq or Australia,I do find Coca Cola eoeryiobere, JUSt astheir slogan cIaims-I see a big Firestone Ti re factory in London ( therespelled Tyres) , and also a Gillette factory. I see Woolworth Stores everywherein numerous countries. When Americanbusiness makes profits from markets inOther nations, that brings wealrh andprosperity to America.

But when American business can nolonger compete-because our PRICESare higher, because our people-bothcapital and labor--demand and getmore and live better, what happens ?Why, people in Britain, Germany,France, Japan and around the worldqui t paying our higher prices. Our goodscease to sell.

Already even we in America are beginning to buy more and more foreigngoods imported from other nations. But,when American business can no longerstey in business, and can no longerEMPLOY LABOR and pay wages and salaries, WHAT ARE AM ERICAN WORKERSGOING TO USE FOR MON EY TO BUYTHINGS WITH? How do you supposeAmerican workers, who have by theweapon of str ikes forced up wages andreduced the amount of work given, aregoing to MAINTAIN their higher standard of living, THEY J UST AREN'T! !

The DAY OF RECKONING is coming!I do not mean it is coming thi! year,

or even next. It will not come immediately, or strike its blow suddenly.

Bitt it is on its way! It is going to

have the effect, these next rwo to sevenyears, of slowing down what otherwise

would have been BOOM prosperi ty.

No More Big Booms

Today, looking ahead into 1962,THERE IS NO BOOM IN SIGHT!

As stated above, I expect a comparati ve non-boom prosperity , withfluctuations, through most of the '60's.Th ere will be short up-and-down cycles,of course. But BOOM DAYS are gone!

What I do foresee is th is: Combi ningwith the economic situation is the revolut ion in the WEATHER. Governmentweather experts know something iswrong.T hey predicr- precisely as Biblical PROPHECY warns- unprecedentedDROUGHT on catastrophic scale, byaround 1970 to 1975 . Meanwhil e, ra infall generally is lessening. \'Vater levelsare dropping lower and lower in theground.

Coming catastrophic dro ught, diseaseep idemics, coupled with th is econom ictrend, will bring the most disastrouseconomic dep ression of all history onthe United States by somewhere around1972.

But one thing wi ll delay it that long.God Almighty has decreed that Hi sMessage must now be proclaimed andpub lished in all the world, as a witnessto warn ALL NATIONS. God sent thisMessage 1935 years ago to mankind byJesus Chri st, and the original apostles. The world totally rejected the Message- then, after rejecting and crucifyingChrist, accepted and professed Hi sNAME.

Few know how close the allies cameto losing W orld W ar II-or the REASONwe did nor. Few will believe it, b,d theonly reason was to allow time for tbisMessag» to go to the world! It can besupported financially only by, in themain, the common people of belowaverage income levels.

America has been kept prosperousenough for those people to carry OutGod's Will! This gigantic crusade guided by the living CHRIST must be completed! It will be!

Apparently this will require aboutanother ten years. There will be sufficient p rosperity in America to providefor it!

What·s going to happ en in the ColdW ar? What's the Soviet Union goingto do? How will things develop in

The PLAIN TRUTH

Europe--through 1962 and through therest of the '60's?

Khrushchev and Europe

First of all, one thing is certa in. Th eKremlin will not let up on the ColdWar. They will continue their worldbarrage of destru ctive propaganda-conscantly ACCUSING the Un ited States,Britain , and west European nations, ofwhate ver false charges they think willserve their purpose. Khrushchev willplunge the world inca a crisis in firstone part of the world, then in another.

If he allows the Berlin crisis to qu ietdown somewhat, tempo rarily, he willprecipitate a war-threatening crisis insome other sector of the world. He willkeep PUSHING. Wherever he is allowedto gain ground he will hold it. W herever he is met by force he will back upand incite new trouble elsewhere .

Above all, Kh rushchev will keep ontrying to split NATO, keep Ger manydivided, and prevent the European Common Market from becoming a greatThird W orld POWER BLOC .

But, most important of all is whatwill happen IN WEST EUROPE!

No one can tell, now, specifically justhow it will develop, but the CommonMarket wiII develop into the comingUNITED STATES OF EUROPE. It will bea loosely-kni t EMPIRE, resurrected fromthe ashes of the old Roman Empire andthe medieval Holy Roman Empire; Itwill comprise T EN nations or groupingsof nations. For example: the Beneluxnations- Belgium, Th e Netherland s(Holland ) , and Luxembourg-may goin, either as ONE group known as Benelux or as three nations. At this stage wecannot tell which ten it will be, exceptit appears certain both Germany andItaly will be in, and probably Franceand Spain. Some of the central Europesatellites now under Russia's clutch, might be in.

At this stage we cannot tell JUSt howrapidly it will develop, or when it willfinally emerge to make the whole worldgasp in awe and amazement.

Bur definitely it is prophesied. It isnow developing. I expect it to be aterrible reality by around 1970-surelyby 1972, and very probably sooner dian1970.

It could develop into full being

Page 17

much faster than even we think .The '60' s will not be "the Soaring

'60's" for the United States. They mostprobably will be just that for west Europe! But, for most of the '60's theUnited States probably will conti nue acomparatively good economic prospe rity, leveling off by about 1970 and heading tow ard a catastrophic CRASH.

The '60 's will see continued develop ment of gadgets toward the push-button"dream world" of idleness, leisure andluxury-but we shall never expand intothe super-prosperity that will afford allthis luxurious idleness which is thepopular dream.

Men will conti nue to spend billionsof dollars trying to escape from thisearth, and get men to the moon, Mars, and other planets. This progress willcontinue-as far as God Almightyallows.

How far will that be? No man onearth knows-God has not told us.

W e do know TWO THINGS : 1) mandoes have the ingenui ty and the abili tyto keep going farther and farther in thisdirection unless he is supernatu rallyprevented. As in the pas[ developmentof the automobile, the airplane, andsuch things, there will be losses-sometragedies-but development will continue right on to the point where GOD

ALMIGHTY steps in; and, 2) God theCreator and Ruler of the univer se hasgiven MAN dominion over the solidearth, the seas, and the AIR-but notabove the air of the earth!

When man gets into outer space, heis invading GOD'S realm. This is notGod's TIME for allowing man to travelfreely beyond the earth. I think theAlmighty will halt this mad enterprisebefore it gets very much farther. Hemay allow a Russian to get to the moon- bm I doubt whether the God theydeny will allow a safe return!

Th e '60's will see connnued nerveshattering harrassing ups and downs inthe Cold War. It will see the develop ment of the ROMAN EMPIRE awakening, and rising alit of its "bottomless p it." Itwill see space-age development.

I do not expect it to see total nuclearwar. I DO expect the '70's to see {henuclear war that will END this presentworld at Armageddon-and usher inthe peaceful, happy WORLD TOMORROW!

That is our only real hope for survival! Th e intervention of God!

W HO are the Elect?

Jesus Christ prom ised protection to

Hi s ow n elect! He PROMISED they wouldsurvive the prophesied holocaust to

strike this ususpecti ng world! He said, "FEAR NOT, little flock, it is

my Father's goad pleasure to give youthe kingdom" ( Luke 12: 32 ) .

He promised that somewhere on thisearth, right now, there would be Hi sown WORK! That work would be faithfully perform ed, He promised, by Hi sow n true followers, who KNOW HISVOICE, who would be preaching, NOTsome man-made "gospel" of grace, faith, hope Ot love, but "the Gospel of theKi ngdom" as a WITNESS to the WHOLEWORLD!

They would be preaching it, chapterby-chapter, verse-by-verse, word-byword, just exactly as it really IS, not asthey might interpret it to be, or any manwoman, or organizat ion of men orwomen wo uld like to have it preached!

Yo u NEED TO FIND WHERE THATWORK IS BEING CARRIED ON!

Why?Because it is ONLY THOSE who have

an absolute guarantee of safety!Th e very elect are those who are the

called and chosen, who have truly REPENTED of their ow n carnal ways, andhave accepted the Holy ways of God!They are the ones who have been mademembers of the very BODY of JesusChrist ( I COt. 12:13 ) performing HI SWOR K!

Jesus speaks of these faithful ones, inthe Book of Revelation,

"And to the angel of the church inPh iladelphia [t he prophesied end-rime

Hepromised those doors would remainopen.

''. . , and no man can shut it, for thouhast a little strength, and hast kep t myword, and hast not den ied my name"( Rev. 3:8 ) .

Yes, the very elect would NEVER become corrupted by false doctrines, or bemuzzled by boards of men-it wouldnot deny the name of Jesus Christ, orH is true doctrine!

Later, Jesus gave the exhila ratingGOOD NEWS to those faithful ones whopu t the WORK of God far above theirown personal considerat ions, He said"Because thou hast KEPT the wo rd ofmy patience, I ALSO WILL KEEP THEEFROM THE HOUR OF TEMPTATION[TRIBULATION] WHICH SHALL COMEUPON ALL THE WORLD, TO TRY THEM

THAT DWELL ON THE EARTH! " (Rev.3: 10) .

Yes, Jesus promised SAFETY. Hepromises supernatural PROTECTION to

Hi s ow n elect.

On th e Wings of an Eagle

God brought the ancient Israelitesout of Egypt on symbolic "eagles'w ings." This symbol izes the lov ingcare and protection of God for His ow nchildren. Notice. now, an amazingprophecy. It is about the same Churchof God addressed in the promise ofprotection we have JUSt read in Revelation 3. "And to the woman [ the Church]were g iven twO w ings of a great eagle ,

that she might fly into the w ilderness, into her place, where she is nourishedfor a time , and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent" ( Rev.12:14 ) .

In th is end-time prophecy, Johnwrites of the last, end -time REM:NANTChurch which is to ESCAPE the terribleWAR and tribulation that will soon strikeout heedless people. Th ey ate, just asthe ancient Israeli tes, carried to a placeof SAFETY . , . in the "wilderness' bythe supernatural powe r of Almi ghtyGod, their Banner, their Shield , theirProtector!

Where W ill They GO?

N ow notice another amazing prophecy. Daniel was inspired to write of thisimpending nuclear war, and its immediate aftermath, In describing therising BEAST power in Europe, a coming resurrection of the ancient ROMANEMPIRE, he describes a bid for powerby an AFRICAN bloc of nations, as anatt ack by the symbolic "K ing of theSouth " against the "King of the North: 'Bur the European pow er crushes andoccupies these poorly equ ipped upstartcountries.

"And at the time of the end [NOTback duri ng the days of the Seleucidaeof Syria] shall the king of the south[perhaps Nasser, or his successor] PUSHat him, and the king of the north shallcome against him like a whirlwind, wit h chariots, and with horsemen, andwith many ships, and he shall enter intothe countries, and shall overflow andpass over.

"He shall enter also into the g loriousland [Palestine} , and many countriesshall be overthrown, but these shallescape out of his hand, eve n Edom andMoab and the chief of the children ofAmm on."

Why are these areas spared? For a very special reason!

A PLA CE of Protection

Notice! God promises H is peoplewill be nourished, provided for, in the"wilderness!" He w ill supernaturallyprotect them, carrying them safely thereon symbol ic "eagles' w ings:' They maybe taken by air, sea or land-the Bible

doesn't say. Bur where is thi s "wilderness" place God is readying?

Many Bible sraremenrs indicate 1C IS

in the areas anciently occup ied by theEdom ires, Moabi res, and Ammonites.sourheasr of Jerusalem, in the rugged, barren mou ntains beyond the Dead Sea( Dan. 11:4 1 and Isaiah 16 :4-5 ) .

Regardless of WHERE rhe "place"where the Church is nourished and prorecred during these perilous tim esdescribed in so many doze ns of prophecies-rhe way to make sure you aregoing there is clear !

Does this sound fant astic? Does itsound incredible? Have we, the peoplesof GOD, strayed so far from our RULERand our SAVIOUR that we think HimUNABLE to save us? Is it ridi culous to

mcsr today to really believe in Godabove and Hi s supe rnatural protect ion- H is d ivine INTERVENTION in ourown personal lives?

Yes, sadly enough, to most "moderns" such a faith would seem a littlesilly.

But aga in, sadly enough, these sam emodern peopl e will be the ones takingtheir slim chances in their fallou t shelters, tunnels, caves and subways whenthe bombs begin to fall!

WHERE Will You Turn?

Heedless man toda y looks to his ownabi lities to bring PEACE! Scill-he failsmiserably. But where will you cum ? Whom willyou believe?

Th e FALLOUT shelter business ispret ty RISKY right now. For example,LOOK magazine, December 5, 1961,reported there are "Chi selers and flyby-nighr ers" elbowing into the field offallout shelter building. Reliable informacion on the real facts about shelters,

The PLAIN TRUTH

their provisioning, type ma terials, airduces, locat ion and financing are pretryhard co come by, reported th is majo rmagazine.

Look sarcastically reported that thefirst target the average American maywell shooe at, in the event of a WorldWar III , would not be a Russian, but afellow A merican, trying to break intohis neighbor's fallout shelter!

Even the STAUNCHEST advocates ofbuilding fallout shelters say plainly [hatif mulri-rnegaron blasts should strikethis nati on, the resultan t fire stormwou ld render the family fallout shelte rbut a "tiny and fragi le oasis." T hey warnthat in some, fam ilies would be incinerated . In others, they would be crushedby massive deb ris or heavy portio ns ofbuildings, torn loose and hurled into theair by the gia nt blasts. Many would beobliterated by the fireball of the explosion-s-others suffocaced for lack ofoxygen.

Still ocher sources say the falloutshelte r would be worse than useless inthe event of attack.

Today, guerrilla bands ate forming,organizing-no, NOT in the CongoRIGHT HERE IN THE "good old U.S_A."!They are carrying rifles, submachioeguns, bu rying medicines, foods and ammunition in the mount ains.

Ir is estimated that one such organization, called the "Minutemen" hasburied up to 10,000 rounds of ammuniti on the length and breadth of thestate of Cali fornia!

Tbine of it!Depraved people-SICK with fear

are digging framically like mole s andgop hers int o the dirt of the ground, seeking protecrion from the awesomerhreat of nuclear WAR! Others, seekingsome excuse co "ace rough," to carry aGUN, and pretend to be a mi litary man, declare themselves to be a "guerrilla,"and avow rhey would SHOOT DOWN anyfellow American who cries to use the irsupplies or equ ipme nt in the even t ofa national emergency!

Have we gone crazy? Are many of

Janua ry, 1962

uur peop les completely berserk? Is th isthe solutio n to our mounta inous problems?

God says we have FORGOTTEN H im!Most of us haven't even known ournat ional identity in God's word. \Y/ehave rejected and forgotten the SIGNthat wou ld identify us as H IS OWNPEOPLE, W e impugn and ridicule HISLAWS, and live in ope n defiance of them. Then, as if insatiable with this abomination. we treat H is Sacred Word likesheer MYTH!

Our H eavenly Father stands ready to

PUNISH His rebellious children! But to those who will truly repent of

wanting their own way, and who willcome to Hi m th roug h Jesus Chris t andHi s sacrifice, He promises spi ri tual ,supernatural, MIRACULOUS shelte r!

He is our fort ress! He is our Rock!H e is our Goo!

\Y/hac a SPECfACLE we must be to

God, and to the world ! Trembling infear, we begin bu rrowing into thegro und like moles-crying to escape!

But think what an EXAMPLE to theworld, and to God, if we would STANDUP, and beg in to really put faith andtrust in God! W hac if we would beginto FACE the enemy, not wit h armo r andnuclear might, but with the W ord ofGod, and the Power of Hi s Spirit! W hatif we, the chosen peoples of God , wouldgo Out aga inst Go liath wi th the WORDOF GOD on our lips, and FAITH in H im!W hac if we, today, would MARCH INTOTHE TEETH of our enemies singing thesongs of David-tru sting in the God ofAbraham, Isaac and Jaco~UR God,co del iver us?

What a grand, glorious, heart-quickening, thrilling sight THAT would be!

But, as your Bible shows, we peopleswill NOT, as a whole, repent and rumco God . It is left up to YOU, as an in diridual, to make your own choice.

If you can really have faith in H im- trusting H I.M for your shelter, yourprotection , the n you do not need. a"fallout" shelter-you simply will notbe here, if you remain fervent, zealous, active and rea lly CONVERTED!

If you cannot believe in and trus tyour God, then perhaps you shouldcarefu lly search the ads, choose a builder, make financial arrangemems , and staredigging!

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

SCOUTS REPORT SEEING GIANTS!

THE ISRAELITE scouts sent out by Moseshad traveled by foot over much of Canaan.

They had looped around to arrive at Hebron, a city not too far from Kadesh. The

rose-red city of Kadesh was the scouts' starting point, where the twelve tribes were

encamped and awaiting reports from the twelve-man expedition.

On leaving Hebron, the Israelites suddenly found themselves confronted by

several soldiers blocking the narrow street.

"We can't turn back now," Joshua said In a low vOICe to Caleb. "If we turn

back, they'll probably take after us!"

Giants!

As the scouts neared the soldiers, they were amazed to realize that some of

them were almost twice as tall as ordinary men' The towering soldiers saw the ex

pressions of growing unbelief on the faces of the scours, who now were close enough

to notice the hostility on the faces of the soldiers. Suddenly the scours realized that

ir was only mock hostility. The giant men broke into loud, hoarse laughter and stepped

aside to let the six pairs of Israelites continue down the street. It was evident that

a favorite pastime of the soldiers-the giant descendants of Anak-was to playfully

startle strangers who had never before seen such tall men. (Numbers 13:22 .)

The scours breathed sighs of relief and thankfulness as they left the laughing

soldiers behind them. They kept on to the south - where they saw numerous other

giant tribes-until they arrived at a fertile valley known as Eshcol, through which

ran a small river. This was grape country and time for harvesting grapes. The

Israelires were astounded at the grear size of the grape clusrers.

"We were instructed to bring back samples of the produce of Canaan," Joshua

reminded rhe men. "So far we have gathered only a few things, and our trip is

nearly over. This IS perhaps our lasr opportuniry to rake some of the unusual fruit

growing here."

Not wanting to invade a private vineyard, the men CUt down a large cluster

of grapes apparently growing wild. They hung the cluster on a pole for two men to

carry it between them back to Kadesh. The grapes weren't so heavy that two men

were required to lift them. It was a matter of letting the massive cluster hang free so

that it wouldn 't be crushed. However, the bunch of grapes was all of two feet long,

and each grape was as large as a plum!

The scours also plucked healthy fruirs and luscious figs from the area. Burdened

wirh their increased loads, they turned southeast toward Kadesh.

They crossed the Arabah and arrived ar Kadesh on the border of Edam just forty

days from the time they had set out. Although many people went out to meet them

and to ply them with questions, the scours reported at once to Moses. Knowing that

the people were anxious to learn what their spies had seen in Canaan, Moses later

called for the people to assemble close to the tabernacle. (Numbers 13 :23-25.)

As a leader of the expedirion, Joshua was asked first to give a public account of

what had taken place. He came out on a high platform, so that rhe crowd could see

him, and sketchily related what the men had seen and done.

joshua's Report

"It is a good land," he concluded. Large areas of it are very tertile, as many of you

can see by this display of unusual produce. There is plenty of grazing country for our

flocks and herds. W e should thank God that all these good things are there for the

taking when we move northward."

Meanwhile, all the other scouts except Caleb had gathered in a group and were

earnestly talking. When Joshua had finished speaking, he asked anyone of them to

add to what had already been said. One scour, obviously chosen as a spokesman,

came up to face Moses, Aaron and the throng of people.

"The land of Canaan is indeed fertile in some regions, just as Joshua has stated,"

the speaker said in a strong, clear voice. "However, when he spoke of our seeing a few

very tall men, he failed to mention that all the people are very large and tall. He also

left our the facts that all the cities have high, thick walls behind which are large, well

trained, powerful armies. It is foolish to even think of trying to enter Canaan. We

would all be slaughtered!"

Bearing produce from Canaan, the scouts successfully returned tothe rocky, mountainous area of Kadesh.

There was an awkward silence. Moses and Aaron, as well as most others, were

greatly startled by what they had heard. Joshua and Caleb exchanged anxious

glances. Caleb leaped on the platform and raised his arms for silence. The murmu r

ing gradually subsided, but not completely.

"I ask you to hear me on this matter!" Caleb spoke out loudly. "Th is man whom

you have just heard doesn't speak for all twelve of us. For some reason he has lied

abour the cities all having high walls, all the people being giants and all the armies

being large and powerful. The trurh is that God can surely overcome the inhabitants

of Canaan for us!" (Numbers 13:26-33.)

The ten scouts quickly crowded onto the platform, shouting and gesturing.

"No! No!" they chorused. "This fellow is the one who isn't telling the trurh !"

There was much confusion, both around the platform and throughout the

crowd. After a few minutes Moses and his officers were fairly successful in resronng

order. God does not like confusion.

"Th is has been a disgraceful exhibition, especially by men of your past good

reputations," Moses said sternly to the ten scouts. "If you actually believe it would be

a mistake to go into Canaan, then you musr give more reasons than you have

already stated, and with proof!"

There was a quick consultation among the ten men, and again their spokesman

srepped up to address the people.

"I' ll admit thar I didn't tell you exactly what conditions are in Canaan," the

speaker shoured, "bur neirher did Joshua nor Caleb. The real truth is something none

of us wanted to bring to you because it seemed cruel to fill you with complete dismay

and disappointment. However, probably many of you won' t believe what I am about

to tell you."

Here the speaker paused, at the risk of being interrupted, so that rhe audience

would be even more eager to hear his words. He was counting on Moses giving him a

full chance to say what he had to say.

"Now here are the terrifying facts," he continued. "For some reason these two

leaders probably won't back me up on these things. But nine other scouts will. In the

first place, the climate of most of the land north of here is very bad. It has produced

mostly desert territory. Water is scarce. Disease and pestilence have taken the lives of

ordinary people like ourselves. The survivors-and they musr number into many thou

sands-are all giants who are actually so tremendous that we were only as grasshop

pers in their sight. Th ey didn't pay any attention to us because they looked down on

us as only insects. These people have descended from fi erce Hamitic tribes. They are

so mountainous and powerfu l that it would take only a few of them to stamp all of

us into the ground! "

A great sound of discontent welled up from the crowd. At a command from

platform. "They don't event want to listen to me."

"Most of them know that they have listened to lies," Moses said. "They prefer to

believe what isn't the truth so that they will have excuses to return to Egypt."

"Ten of my fellow scoutS must be working with those who are trying to get the

Israelites ro turn back," Joshua remarked bitterly.

"It is very plain," Moses agreed. "Th is growing movement to try to return to

Egypt is getting Out of hand."

The Crowd Breaks Up

Moses soberly watched the yelling Israelites milling excitedly about, and shook

his head in disappointment . In recent weeks, in spite of the trouble these people had

given him, his hope had grown that his task of leading them to the promised land

was about to end. An end to the journey now appeared about as possible as single

handedly herding millions of wild burros into a corral.

For a few moments he considered trying to address the people, to remind them how

futile it would be to start back without God 's help. But already the huge throng was

breaking up. Officers were faithfully working to keep the crowd in order, but the people

were too noisy and excited to listen to any more speeches.

W ailing, weeping and murmuring, the people milled around between camps and

tents, loudly complaining that it would mean death to all if they were to set foot in what

they referred to as a disease-ridden land of giants to the north. All night this noisy

and childish exhibition went on.

Meanwhile, however, many thousands of the Israelites had no part in the demon

stration.

By early morni ng many of the complainers were worked up into such a highly

emotional state tha t they again formed into a crowd that advanced angrily toward the

tabernacle. Some of the demons trato rs went so far as to carry sricks and stones.

"W e wish we had died in Egypt!" tho usands of them yelled.

"We wish we had died in the desert !" other thousands chorused. "God has dragged

us out to this miserable place only for the purpose of having us slain by giants!

Our wives and our children will all die if we follow Moses any further!"

"We want to go back to Egypt!" was a common cry. "Let us choose a leader who

knows what is best for us-e-one who knows the shortest and fastest route back to

Egypt !" (Numbers 14 :1-4.)

"We have already picked out those who can lead us! " some of the Israelites

screamed. "Let us put down Moses and his officers so that our leaders can take over!"

Only the most rebellious and rabble-rousing dared suggest ousting Moses, and

not a great part of the Israelites fell in with such a suggestion of violence. However, itwas plain to Moses that this unhappy situation could explode into a worse one within

minutes . There was only one wise thing to do. Moses motioned to Aaron. The twO

of them mounted the platform. For a few seconds they silently regarded the clamoring

crowd. Then they knelt down and bent over with their foreheads touching the floor of

the platform. In this abject position they called on God to step in and take contro l of

the people.

When the demonstrators saw their leaders bowing in prayer they quieted down

to a low murmur.

Angered and shocked at the manner in which their fellow scouts had spoken and

acted, Joshua and Caleb decided to take advantage of this quieter period to try once

more to bring rhe truth to the people. Joshua once more went to the platform

and walked out in front of Moses and Aaron.

"Fellow Israelites!" Joshua cried out. "I'm here again to assure you of what all

twelve of us have witnessed-that Canaan is a good, productive land. There are no

giants such as have been described to you, though there are some men who are several

feer taller than our men. There is a good supply of water. We saw no unusual signs

of disease or pestilence. Canaan is so much better than any land we have come through

so far that it would be very foolish not to claim it. Let us not rebel againsr our

Creator. Otherwise He might decide to withhold this promised land from us!"

People looked on with stony faces as Joshua stepped back and Caleb came

forward to srand in front of the twO men who were still prostrate.

"What Joshua has jusr told you is true!" Caleb shouted to the people. "God is

offering us a wonderful future if only we obey Him. Surely He is already displeased

by your attitude of refusal to go into Canaan and take what our Creator wants us to

have for our own happiness. As for fearing the Canaanites, there is no reason for that.

At long as God is with us, no people-even if they were all giants--ean overcome us!"

As soon as Caleb ceased speaking, the murmuring from the crowd grew louder

and louder. In spite of a number of alert guards surrounding the platform, the bolder

and more excited ones in the crowd moved menacingly close. Out of the hubbub of

shrieks and yells two chilling words became more and more distinct.

"Stone them! Stone them! Stone them!" (N umbers 14:5-10. )

Very soon the phrase became a monstrous chant from the lungs of the frenzied

thousands. Still Caleb and Joshua stood on the platform with the kneeling Moses and

Aaron.

What Is the Truth ?

THE TRUTH IS that scientifically andminutely defining an ailment or disease, catalogi ng statist ics about it and givingit a fitt ing Latin or Greek name DOES

NOT CURE THE DISEASE! And, contraryto popular opinion- it doesn't evenLEAD TO A CURE.

THE TRUTH IS that this method of

THE TRUTH IS that modern science is

dashing about in an increasingly cornp licared maze of medical statisrics-c-dulycata loged and ana lyzed by elect ro nic"brains't-i-concerned with the RESULT,i.e, the disease, rather than with theCAUSE-broken physical law. Few seemto realize that living contrary to thelaws that govern human healt h results inthe disease.

THE TRUTH IS that modern medica lpractices are PRODUCING mor e diseasedconditions and CREATING more NEWILLNESSES than they are curing!

Amongthe curre nt strains of ant ibiot ics beingused are developing a whole family ofdeadly SUPERGERMS against which therehas nor yet been found a defense! Onlywithin the last few months has the Outline of the proporti ons of this new threatto nat ional health been discovered.

Here is the current problem-a repeatof the old "mi racle drug" prob lem. This hospi tal-born infection has spreadthroughout the entire country and isrearing its ugly head and bringing tragedy to many homes. And when it lands on you or someother suscept ible human being , it growsovernight into a painful disease DOUBLING ITS NUMBER OF GERMS EVERYTWENTY MINUTES!

"In 1960, the U.S. Vet erans Administration Cooperative Committee forHospit al Infectio n reponed that the frequency of sign ificant staphylococcalinfections in ge neral medical surgicalhospitals ranged between 10 and 13percent." (Good Housekeeping, August,1961. )

Formerly harmless micro-organismshave become dangerous enemies. Onceharmless in a God-intended microbebalance in the body, these "new" germsare st irred to multiply and produce disease by medical treatment g iven in ignorance of, and directly in opposi tio nto, God's laws of health.

Eventhose that do us no direct good , at leastdo us no direct harm" ( Reader's D igest,N ovember, 1959 ) ,

The antibiot ics ( the word means"anti -life") work by kill ing off diseasecausing bacteria. BUT IN THE PROCESSKfLL OFF MANY HELPFUL ORGANISMS!This upsets [he God- int ended heal thbalance. permissive teach ing is a very impo rta ntprinciple, A child must be taught thehabit of obedience! H e must be TAUGHTNEVER to play with fire, or to rum on

But HOW? By "surroundi ng him with

intere stin g objects?" Of course not!You and I know that the most inter

esting objec t to the child is the FOR·BIDDEN one !

But let 's be PRACTICAL! Let 's be SENSIBLE!

No/ice thi s quotation from an "oldfashioned" ch ild-rearing authority of afew decades ago! "For example, when

a very young child runs away from thehouse and the mother follows with alitt le switch and inflicts a keen pain onthe child's legs, and invariably does thiswhen the child runs away, she breaksthe child of runn ing away and maythereby save his life" (Training Children, Pyle, p, 172 ) .

Do you see? Th e so-called "positive"method of the psychologist is NOT

really positive-but negative! It advocates DOING NOTHING as the firstmeasure, and then "gentle" pencil rapping-presumably on the back of theband! which SHOULD NEVER BE DON E!

Bur let's really ANALYSE this spinelesspractice!

W hat if the child does not obeyeven after the "pencil rapping"? THENwhat? They simply do not say. The obvious problem with this nebulous theorizing is that the FIRST disobedient actof a child could be his LAST!

You simply cannot afford to let achild "gradually" quit running away, orour into the street, or turni ng on theGAS, playing with fire, and breakingvascs :and bottles! You've got to getRESUL'rs-c-and get them falt!

Let's analyse another example of achild who openly flaunts authority before his parents. As already quoted, thechild psychologists assure us the

Eighteen-momher . . . asked to"come here, dear," either standsstill or runs in the opposite direction. ( He may even like to walkbackwards. ) Ask him to put something in the wastebasket, they tellus, and he is more likely to emptyOut what is already in it. Hold ouryour hand for the cup which he hasjust drained, he will drop it onrothe floor. Give him a second sockto put on, and he will more likelythan nor remove the one which isalready on his foot. Hi s enjoymentof the opposite, they continue,"may be the reason why it works sowell, if he is running away fromyou to say 'bye-bye: and walkaway from him. Then he MAY comerunning."Nor only does he nor comewhen called-he seldom obeys anyverbal command. 'N o' .is his chiefword!" ( Emphasis ours) ( p. 22,Child Behavior, IIg and Ames.)

The PLAIN TRUTH

Assuming a young couple have beenattempting to "rear" their child according to these spineless reasonings, Jet'ssee what could easily happen .

The parents , with a small eighteenmonth-old boy, are walking casuallyalong the Streets of their town. Theirboy, simply because he is supposedly inone of the "phases" of childhood whichdemand s a negative and rebelliousanswer to everything, is disobedient. Herebels at any command of his parents, saying "NO" to their every order, andlaughingly runs from them when theyattempt to correct him, scorning theirfeeble efforts at keeping him under canrrol by plucking ineffectually at hissleeve.

They approach an intersection. Thelight is red. The child, seeing something interesting across the street, begins to run for it. Each parent, frightened almost beyond words, shouts "NO!NO! STOP! at the top of his voice.A screech of tires, the laugh ing face oftheir child, looking back at them as hefollows his babyish habit of "runningaway from them" when they say "N o,"a sickening "thud!" and their baby boyis a lifeless, grotesquely sprawled formlying under a car.

A purely hypothetical case, you say?No! Far from it! It happens quite frequentl y! Bur it ON LY happens to children who are disobedient to their parents' commands, and who have nc r beenTAUGHT 110t to run away from theirparents, not to resist, rebel, and do theexact opposite of everything theirparents tell them!

Almost the identical situation tookplace with my son! Except - I hadtaught my boy what "No !" meant. Wewere walking home from church, andMark had run ahead about 15 or 20feet. As we came to the crossing beforeour house, a car came racing down theusually quie t street on which we lived.Mark began to step off the curb, to runacross to the house. Seeing the car rap idly approach ing, I shouted NO!

There was no time to "reason" withMark. There was no time to "surround"him with objects that he "could buildup and manip ulate!" in order to takehis mind off running across the street.Instead, there was only time for thesingle shouted command-UNO!"

January, 1962

There was the roar of an engine, aswirling of leaves and dust, and the faceof my boy, standing stock-stili, waitingobediently at the curb, smiling at meas be stopped im tantaneously upon hearing that command. I breathed a sigh ofrelief, and expressed my thankfulness to

God, and then to my wife, for the wonderful blessing it is to know God'smethod of child rearing really WORKS!

WHEN to Punish

As has already been proved, the timeto BEGIN constructive discipline, andpunishment, when necessary, is at birth! It was only because I had taught my sonby means of constant association thefull meaning of the word "no" thathis life was saved in this particular instance.

The time to begin train ing your childby associating certain things togetheris shortly after birth. Obviously, itwould be tOO early to spank a one-dayold baby! However, there are also manythousands who will tell you it is milchtOO early to puni sh any child who isunder one year of age!

The only trouble with this concept isthat many HABITS are deeply instilledwithin the child by the time he reachesone year of age! There can be no absolure hard and fast ru le as to the exactmoment at which you should begincorrective measures to instill the habitof obedience and respect for authoritywithin your children. However, sincewe know punishment must be just andgraded to the nature and the degree ofthe offense, it should hinge upon thetime when it is first required.

Let us now understand wben effective discipline may be req" iredl Anyparent, having a newly born child inhis home, qu ickly learns to discern thedifference between a "hunger" cry, a"wet" cry, a "hun" cry and an "angry"cry. Let us repeat, ANY parent shouldcertainly be able to discern the differences in the emotional outbursts in theirchildren.

To spank a child simply because itis crying would be a terr ible mistake.A parent would feel grievously ashamedand terribly hur t if, after spanking hischild for crying, he found an opensafety pin sticking the Infant had causedthe outburst! HOWEVER, let us not

Page 35: a magazzne understanding Truth 19… · JANUARY, 1962 of understanding _.'-~,,--Wide World Photo BACKTO THE CAVES? A frenzied campaign to encourage building follout shelters has led

Janua ry, 1962

swing [Q the opposite extreme and "kidourselves" that EVERY time the childcries there is some reason other thananger or rebellion for it! The chancesare, you will nat begin to discern thedifference between these var ious soundsin the child's crying unt il after a fewweeks of life. Let us assume the fellowing situation develops :

Your boy is two months of age. Hehas been properly bathed, fed, and putto bed comfortably. It is now well pastthe time he should normally be sleeping. However, he begins crying or "fussing." You arise from bed, go to hisroom and check carefully to see whj'

he is crying. You know he had beenfed, you have checked his diapers andclothing carefully to see that he is notbound in his clothing, or that the re isnot any open pin . (Many "locking type"safety pins are available which makethis almost an impossibility today. )

T he child is not pulli ng his knees up,ind icating he does not have a stomachache. You not ice that he ceases cryingimmediately when you pick him up,and beg ins to cry the moment you purhim back down. Now you have ascertained his cry is an "atte nt ion" cry merely want ing to be held. Not a serious crime in itself, and certa inly it isnot wrong for a parenr to rock his childto sleep, to allow the child to go to sleepon the bosom of the parent and thenquietly place him in his own crib, orto walk with him until he is asleep.HOWEVER- you must start sometimeto teach him the MEANING of the word"NO!"

Any nnrmal six-week-old baby is oldenough to begin to understand and follow simple commands! Place the babyback in his crib. Retire from the room. After he beg ins "fussing" again, walkto the side of his crib, bend over andmake sure he hears you. Pa ine yourfinger at him and say once, firmly, butnot TOO loudly, "NO! " Retire from theroom. Usually, he will either StOP cryingmomentarily at the sound of your voice,or will be cont inu ing to cry all the waythrough your ent ry into the room andyour comma nd. However, don't beg in comake the mistake here that so many parents make of "not being sure" their childHEARD or UNDERSTOOD them!

Usually, he will begin to cry again

Th e PLAIN T RUTH

the moment you leave the room. Ne xt.walk firmly to the side of his crib, aod, using only one or tWO fingers, deftlyand smartly spat him on the buttocks. You may, without removing the heavynightt ime diapers, spat him sharplyvery bigb on [he side of the thigh . Butf IRST, strike yourJelf on the back ofthe hand , the wrist, or the cheek to determi ne the strength of the spat, andmake definitely SURE you do nor strikethe child toO hard. HOWEVER, DO makesure you str ike him HARD ENOUGH sothat he feels it!

This will be your child's first experience wit h a "spanking." The chancesare, if he is a normal child , he will wailso loud ly, so brokenheanedly. withsuch a mixed sound of surprise, pain andanger that it will amaze you! But youhave begun to teach him a valuablelesson . You have nat really "hurt" thechild in a lasting sense. You have notgiven him any "comp lexes." You havenor "wounded" or "injured" the child!

W hat you HAVE done is to begin to

teach your child a positive ASSOCIATIONbetween the phonetic sonnd of the sharpcommand "NO!" and the stinging pa inthat follows when he disobeyed.

The child may drop off into a deepsleep within a few moments of crying.ALLOW him to cry until you can tell bythe sound of his crying that the pain.hurt and surpri se has died down and heis not still crying merely as the aftereffects of his first "spanking,"

Th is will vary, and needs a great dealof wisdom and judgment. Bur it alsoneeds firmness, and assurance you aredoing this GOD'S WAY, and purposefuldetermination to carry the lessonthrough.

If the child [hen, after 10 or 15minutes begins to cry again-and youcan discern this is another "atrenrion"cry. REPEAT the performance. Repeat itEXACfLY as it was done before. Walkfirmly into the room, bend over thecrib, say "NO!" to the child sharply . Already, you will p robably notice the childceases crying immediately with a lookof "shocked" surprise come over hisface. But, true to form, he may begincrying again the minute you leave theroom. Usually, the second sharp spat( and preferably 110t in the same place astbe firs' will be all that is needed for

Page 35

[his first lesson. The baby will fill hislungs with good pure air, wave his littlearms and kick his feet, have a goodhealthy cry, and usually lapse into a full, deep and tired sleep!

Let us state here that IT IS fULLYREALIZED the mere SUGGESTION of"spatting" an infant, and especially aninfam of th is AGE, may, jf a person isso totally STEEPED in the spineless licent iousness, the proven idiocy and the impractical permissiveness of child psy·chologists, that it may arouse to bitterheight s of anger those who have beenthe victim s of such teaching. However,if you remain hostile toward kind, loving, healthfu l disciplin e at this junctureof these many art icles then it is probablytrue that NOTHING- not even the inspired, GOD·BREATHED commands ofyour Heavenly Father, who gives youevery breath of air )' OU breathe, willchange your op inions.

W e have seen, then, that the t ime to

BEGIN pu nishing is l-'ery earl" in life, assoon as is pract icable after birth, or, assoon as a similar siruation arises to theone stated above.

Spanking Is Not th e " Last Resort"

Let it be clearly understood thatspanking is not the "least desired " ofthe various methods of pun ishment, but the BEST method, one which is Godgiven. Spanking should NEVER be considered a "last resort" when all hasfailed. It seems people who are sickand affl icted will try every other meansknown to man before they will FINALLYin absolute DESPERATION "give God acry!" So it seems to be with child rearing.

Parents will try every method whichhas been devised by the "no discipline"school of theorists, shunning as beingsomething terrib ly distastefu l the appli cation of physical punishment.

Bur spanking should NEVER be donein anger! It should ALWAYS be done in10"e. The child psychologists have beenunable to reconcile themselves to theconception that any parent is capable ofpunishing his child in love!

Spanki ng is NOT an extreme as a"last resort" bur is the best method ofpositive teaching, the God-g iven, Divinely inspired method, the way rha:reali" 'Works!

THE BIBLE ANSWERS

Probably you have heard the commonteaching chat a saint is a very specialkind of Christian-one who has usua llydi ed.' People have corne to assume chata saint is a peculiar, almost superhumanindividual who by some unknow nmeans has found unique, almost exclusive favor in the eyes of God. As aresult of this favor, he is to be givenspecial adoration and worship by themasses of compa ratively unholy, unrighteo us fellow humans who arc beneath his exalted p lane of spi rituality,

Where did this idea come from?Listen to the amazing answer ! "To payhonor [0 the dead whom the generalvoice [of the people] declares to havelived well is an instinct of human nature," declares the Catholic Dictionary, arr. , Canonization, p . 114. D id you catchthat? "An instinct of human nature>! isthe SOURCE of rh is belief. Humannature is the SOURCE of this prac t ise.Ye r God says the way of human nature- che way that SEEMS righc--ends indeath (Pro. 14: 12 ) .

W here do you find THAT in theBible?

saint! Once you are DEAD, you have nohope of becoming a saint wh ile you arein chat condition-not even a wa it offifty years will do the crick.

Paul frequ entl y add ressed his ep istles"co the saints which are at Colosse"( Col. I: 2 ) or Ephesus ( Eph. 1:1 ) orPhilippi ( Phil. I: I.) or Other locarions. He was writing co LIVING peop le whomhe was at tbsu. time calling SAINTS. Hedid not say "co all the ones who willbecome saints fifcy years aft er they havedied at Colosse." He was addressingliving, breaching human beings. In otherplaces he spoke about saluting or greeting the saints ( Rom. 16 :15 ) , or collecring .prcduce for those seines who weresuffering severe hardsh ip ( I Cor. 16: I ) .Paul, before he was converted, says,"many of the saint s did I shut up inprison" ( Acts 26: 10 ). These are jusra few of the many scrip tures that PROVEchat there were living people who werecalled saints while they were yet alive.

Shocking as the ORIGIN of chis pagan, babylonish idea of whar a saint is supposed co be, even more amazing is howone qualifies co become a saint, accord ing to this false system.

that one is a specia l saint .In this fake system, the procedure

for becom ing a saint went through alengthy process of evolu tion and wasnot finally establi shed until the tenthcentury-although the Bible speaks ofsaints back in the Old Testament severalthousand years before the tenth centuryA.D.!

"The procedure to be observed wasgradually regularized, defects were remedied, and safeguards supplied. In thel Orh century we meet wi th the completeprocess of canonization [ the process ofbecoming a saint}" (Catholic Dictionary, art . Canon ization, p. 115 ).

Now that we know from the Biblewhat a saint is NOT, lee's turn to theBible and see what a tm e saint in God 'ssight IS. In both the Hebrew of the OldTestament and the Greek of the NewTestament , our Engli sh word "saint" isrranslared from word s that mean ro be"holy, set apart , separate" (Strong's Concordance, Y 01Jng's Analytical Concordalice). Throughout the Bible, God speaksof holy vessels in the temple, of holychambers, of holy ga rments, of Hi s HolyCity, Hi s H oly Spirir, H is Holy SonJesus, Hi s holy prophets, and manyother things that ate holy to God Ineach of these examples the word "holy"is used as an ad jective.

However, when the word for "holy"stands alone as a noun, it means simply"holy one" or "saint ." When a personor thing is set apart for a special useby God, this very ncr makes it hoi)' inGod's eyes. God makes phy sical objectsholy by setti ng them apart for somespecific purpose. God makes people holyby calling them Out of the world andJetting them ap(lrt for a specific purposethat God has in mind for them . To thosewhom H e has called Out, God commands,"Be you holy, fot I am holy" (I Pee.I: 16 ) .

Now HOW is God holy-set apartand different from everything else? ByHi s perfect CHARACTER. It is God 'scharacter. His MJ ND--as summarizedin the Ten Commandments-that makesHim Holy. It is by our keep ing thesecommandments with the power of God'sSpirit that we tOO are to become holyand worthy of being called "holy ones"or "saints." T his is the exact definitiongive n in Revelation 14 : 12 : "He re is

From this scripture we see tha t asaint is nothing more than a genuine.obedient Christian. A true saint and atrue Christian are one and the same inGod's sight. A saim is not some specialbrand of Christian wit h a super ior de-

T H AT MEANT ,\\"AR!

The United States, it Rashed to mymind, was now drawn into \X' orld WarII!

Arr iving in Portland, I jumped into acab and got to the radio stud io asqu ickly as possible. I purchased the extranewspapers being sold on the streets.I carefu lly scanned the telerapes of latestnews at the radio station. OUt carne myporta ble typewriter. A new broadcastscript was dashed off.

At 4 P.M. I Went on the air with oneof the red -hottest broad casts of my life.I knew that all of my listeners probablyknew, already, of the Pearl Harbor "dayof infamy: ' I merely reported the verylatest few items of news, then went intoan explanation of the MEANING of itIN BIBLICAL PROPHECY. This was oneof the exciting incident s of my life.

From that point on, as my broadcaststook on more and more the natu re ofnews analysis of the war, listener interest increased, now that the United Stateswas in the war.

December 7 Sequel

This happens to be wri tten December7, 1961. Ir reminds me of a sequel rothat first airplane Righ t I wish to addhere.

the earth . One revolution of the eartharound the sun marks off a year.

These th ree bodies automatically markoff time -cycles of 19 years. Only onceevery 19 years do the earth, sun andmoon come into exact conjunction. So19 years marks off a complete time cycle.

Lacking six weeks to the day, preciseIy one time-cycle of 19 years after myfirst Sunday morni ng plane ride when Iheard the news of Pearl H arbor, I myself was flying in a huge 707 jet plane, early Sunday morning, over the precisespOt in Pearl Harbor whe n the U.S.battleships were sunk!

This was, of course, entirely coinci dence. It was in no way planned. Yeteveryth ing in my life seems to haveworked Out in cycles of years that aresignificant to God-s-cycles of 3 or 3Yl.of 7, of 12, and of 19. So, though Inever real ized it until a year afte rward,th is co-incidence seems to me to haveprov ided a sign ificant sequel to that firstflighr.

M usic Dropped From Prog ram

It was now, more than ever, that mytwenty years' experience in the newspaper and magazine field profited thework. Not only did I have long experience in recognizing significantnews, and in processes of analysis ( ofnews as well as of business arid merchandising cond itions ) bur now, witha 14-year accumulation of Biblicalknowledge and understanding of prophecies, result ing from these years of intense and concentrated (as well as consecrated ) study, I was able to produceradio programs that carried even grea terpublic interest than those of the net-

work news analysts. At this time news reponing and news

analysis constituted by far the numberone listener interest on radio. Anum·ber of nationally famous news commentators and analysts gained the publicspotlight-such men as Elmer Davis,H. V. Kalrenborn, Raymond GramSwing- and some still in the publiceye, Ed Murrow, Eric Severeid , andot hers-just ro nam e a few.

But these men knew nothing of Biblical proph ecy. Nor knowing the rea lpurpose being worked our here below, they did nat grasp the true significanceon the world of the future, of the newsthey were ana lyzing . They did not knowwhere it was leadi ng.

On the other hand, none of the rninisrers broadcasting religious programshad the newspaper and analytical background, nor, I may add , the true understanding of the prophecies, to connectthat entire third of the Bible with thewar events.

Purting the rwo togerher-c-facrualknowledge and analysis of war events, with Bibl ical proph ecies-pur at my d isposal a powerful interest-compel lingmessage.

Radio station managers recognizedthis. At the rime, they welcomed andencouraged it . They began to suggestdropping off the musi c. I have menrioned before that when the programstarred , the first Sunday in 1934, it wasnor called "The WORLD TOMORROW:'bur Radi o Church of God . It was, actually, the formar of a rypical churchservice condensed into a half hour.Only, instead of taking up most of therime with mus ic, announcements, andspecia l events with a 15-mi nure sermon, out of a service an hour and 15 to 30minutes long, I did ger in a 23- to 26minute sermon on a 29Y2 minute program .

We started with our opening theme, then a lively 2·verse hymn-s-never morethan tWO verses on the air-then a shanprayer with hummed music background}(hen ann ouncements) then a short anrhemene, (hen the sermon, then reminder of announcemems about TbePla;1l Truth, and sign -off over closi ngtheme mus ic.

At first I was both reluctant andafraid to drop the music. So I experimented by reducing it. No harm resulted. There was no lessening in theresponse or exp ressed interest. 1 reducedit sti ll more. I Meet Future Son-in-Law

Shortly prior to our summer trip to

Chicago and Los Ange les in 1941, ouryounger daughter had become engagedto Vern R. Mattson, a University ofOregon student. H e had joined (heMarines and at the time we reachedLos Angeles was in boot cam p in SanDiego. Do rothy was then working inthe office with the one secreta ry we hadthen employed. She insisted on comingto Los Angeles whi le we were there,to visit Vern .

When she arrived, it was necessary{or Mrs. Armstrong to take the trai nback to Eugene , to help keep up thework in the office.

I drove Dorothy down to San D iego.It was the first time I had ever metVern Manson. I was not sure I approvedof the engagement. \X! hen he came tothe car, he virtually ignored me. 1 madesome embarrassed comment in an effort

to be friendly."Look, I'm nor marrying YO1/., I'm

going to marry your daug hte r!" hesnapped.

Mr. Mattson may be surprised whenhe reads this. He pro bably doesn't remember it now. He didn't really meanto be rude-he was in Marine boorcamp-s-and it has the reputation ofbeing REAL TOUGH. He was being putthrough the paces without being spared, and his nerves were taut . Actually, asI learned later, he is one of the mostfriendly men I ever knew.

1 found him to be tall-6 feet th reeblond, and, as Dorothy insisted, thehan dsomes t man in the world . BUt withhis boot camp haircut and baggy garb,he did not appear quite that hand some

- to me. The war was to enforce a delay in thei r marriage for a few yearsand when, after having been in (he l srDivision U.S. Marines at Guada1canal ,then in an Australian hospital , back toAmerica and Officers' School because ofhis outstanding war record, and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, with gradesat the top of his class, the war finallywas behind him . I do not want to getahead of the story at this juncture, butit shou ld be mentioned that for someeleven years now, after having been ouroffice manage r, Mr. Manson has beenthe Controller of Ambassador College, and Business Manager of the RadioChurch of God, in charge of businessand financial affairs of the now largeand WOrld-encompassing operation.

At Last-LOS AN G ELES !

After boot camp, Vern was sent backto Quantico, Virginia, for final trainingfor overseas fighting. In Apr il, 1942,Doro thy received word the Marineswere shipp ing out. Vern didn't knowwhere, bur thought likely they wou ldsail through the Panama Cana l, wi thsome possibility of a very brief stopoverat San Diego, Los Angeles or SanFrancisco.

Immediately Dorothy demanded Itake her to Los Angeles to be on handif there was a brief landing at one ofthese three pons. Vern would nor beable to ger word to her uncil rhey landed. There might nor be over 24 bours-e-oreven less. It would be impossible forher to reach anyone of these pores int ime from Eugene .

Of course I could nor leave the workfor any such trip, which might last forseveral weeks. Bur, on checking over thesta te of the wor k, I felt we could now,at last, dare to take the step of starringon the ai r in Los Angeles. To do th is Ineeded to be there in person, and puron the broadcasts live, until we werewell established in Southern California.

So with Dororhy I drove to Hollywood, since KMTR was located. inHollyw ood. We rented a small apartment within walking distance of thestation. Mr. T inkham managed to cleargood time for u5-9: 30 Sunday mornings. T he rime had come to drop thechurch-service type program altogether.Since the original broadcast name, Radio

Church of God, did nor invite a listening from nnn-churchgoers whom wewished primarily to reach, and since inthe world's language the Message ofthe true Gospel-the KINGDOM OF GOD-is about tomorrow's world, I adoptedthe broadcast name, The WORLD ToMORROW!

And so, mid-Aptil, 1942, The WORLDTOMORROW went on the air in Hollywood. In Hollywood I was able to doseveral things to make the programmore professional. I was able to obta inthe services of a big-time network announcer to put us on and take us off theair.

Although 1 used four or. five differentannouncers in the next few years, Ithink the very first one was perhaps thebest known of all-An Gilmore. Hewas cease-eo-coast announcer on suchCBS shows as Sam Spade, Stars overHollywood, and, 1 believe by that time ,Amos and Andy, besides several others,For the past 14 years Art Gilmore hasbeen back on The WORLD TOMORROWas our announcer, and millions worldwide hear his voice at the begin ning andthe sign-off of the program--exceptsome of the foreign overseas stations. We still believe his is the best radiovoice in America to precede mine andGarne r Ted's . He also did the announcing on our TV programs in 1955. Ourreaders may be glad to know that Mr.Gilmore is a fine, upstanding, sincere, clean and high-ptincipled man.

Another reason for going to Hollywood was that Hollywood was radioheadquarters for the nation. Most of thetop· rated network shows orig inatedthere. As a result, I could get a qualityof recording for our electrical rranscription discs there I had never been ableto obta in in Eugene. \V1e had nowreached the stage where the amateu rish,home-made eype of transcriptions I wasable to have recorded in Eugene wouldno longer be acceptable on stations likeKMTR or WHO. In Hollywood Icould obtain the very finest professionalrecordings.

While in Hollywood, I recorded theSunday programs for the Pacific Northwest statio ns either Thursday nights orFriday mornings, drove to the airport(then at Burbank ) and got them off byair-express. These top-level professional

The PLAIN TR UTH

recordings, with a nationally knownnetwork announcer, and the programname, The WORLD TOMORROW, elevated our radio program, at last, to topquality professional level.

Now, at last, we had completely OUtgrown those amateurish, crude beginnings. At last we had an office. I hadone experienced secretary. "'\i.' e were beginning to acquire some of the neededequ ipment. Now we were reall}1growi ngup.

How the daily broadcasting cameabout , and we finally did go on WHO,from which we received listener-ma ilfrom every state in the union-and howa giam network in New York pressuredus off and almost stopped the workand how God opened new doors andevery defeat turned to new victories,wiII be continued. next momh.

Listener from CaliforniaEditor's comment: Pressures from various elements of society often cause thepublic ro get a distorted view of whatactually is happening. The WORLD ToMORROW program is nor afraid to giveyou the unvarnished trut h.

Husband Against " Religion "

"My husband is usually against religion ( and I don', blame him now )but he will listen to the things I readto him from your magazine and Biblelessons and articles, and I have heardhim repeat them to other people (churchgoers ) who try to make him feel stupidbecause he doesn't attend their church. They have no answer for him. He believes what you teach."
