Hutchins' gravesite on Sept. 4. Franklin Pcltus was attacked by what were described as "killer bees". The ICE House changed its name to Lighthouse. Anna Jane Cranek Wendel was recognized for living through three centuries, 1800, 1900 and 2000. Creative Expressions moved to its new location at 119 E. Main St. Gene Glover is the new principal at Eagle Lake Middle School, replac- ing Deborah Matthys. Lalo and Frances Gonzales cele- brated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 25. Don Wild was welcomed as the new principal at Sheridan School, af- ter the retirement of Larry Varley. Larry Contreras was sworn in as the new councilman by Mayor Mi- chael Cooper. Contreras replaced Wayne Bowen. Maude Conic celebrated her 112th birthday at Avalon Place in Wharton. Mr. & Mrs. John K. Davison cele- brated their 60th wedding anniversary Aug. 31. Former Colorado County Sheriff Bill Esterling passed away. SEPT. Plans were being made for a Fam- ily and Fun Day to be held in the new Eagle Lake Municipal Park Sept. 16. The Eagle Lake Preservation Alli- ance issued its second marker to the Norris Building on E. Main Street Plans were being made to build a new Post Office. Eagle Lake Super Slop #25, the former LW's, held its ribbon cutting Sept. 1. Brandy Tuck was named 2000 Colorado County Fair Queen. The new ag complex is ready for the 2000 Colorado County Fair. Five Rice High School students were injured in an automobile acci- dent. Sportsman's Restaurant sustained fire damage when a thunderstorm passing through the city ignited the roof. The home of Raymond and Dorothy Kohleffel received the first historic marker issued to a home by the Eagle Lake Preservation Alliance. A ribbon cutting formally wel- coming Creative Expression to its new location was held Sept. 12. Margaret Rodriguez received her Certified Pharmacy Technician dis- tinction. Anthony Salinas and Cindy Osor- nio were chosen the 2000 Homecom- ing King and Queen. Robert and Maxine Griffith cele- brated their 60th wedding anniversary Sept. 21. OCT. Long-time Eagle Lake benefactor Eula Goss Wintermann passed away Nov. 29. DEC. The Annual Christmas Lighted Parade was a huge success. Fred R.' Fmka served as Parade-Marshal. Howard Wilkerson was named "Fireman of the Year" at their annual Christmas Party; Talon Canaris is the 2001 Mascot; and Kelsey Janow is the new "Miss Sparkle". Wilfred Luedecke resigned as Pet. 4 constable after many years of service to the community. Mack Janak of Weimar was re- elected Colorado County Fair presi- dent. The Dobbin-Nathan building, owned by Vivian Metzger, received a historic plaque from the Eagle Lake Preservation Alliance. The yard of Len and Pat Matula 'was named "Yard of the Month" by ,<(he Eagle Lake Garden Club. Sunny Gertson graduated from Texas A&M University. Garett Hagendorf earned a letter in football at. Southwest Texas Bobcat. Kristi Gayle Jochec received her Master's degree from Texas A&M University. Ralph C. Gertson III, with the U.S. Navy, was home on leave for the holi- days. A fire in Oakland claimed the lives of four young children. After a 20-ycar search, Dora Car- denas finally came face-to-facc with family members of her biological fa- ther. Darrell Appelt returned to the radio business as an employee of KULM Radio in Columbus. Derland Sanford and Cody Cranek placed in the senior boys division in a roping competition. Cody and Cord Kohleffel, Mason Boettcher and Korby Halla received participation awards in the sub-junior figure 8 bar- rels. Eagle Lake resident Rachel E. Zahradnick was the recipient of the Berta Lee Fuchs Scholarship at Texas Lutheran University. On Dec. 27, at 9:45 a.m., Officer Bryan Lasley and Sgt. Tim Crume were dispatched to 607 East B Street in reference to a burglary. The inves- tigation revealed the suspect(s) had apparently entered the residence through a back window the night be- fore and stole a handgun. On Dec. 28, at 9:57 a.m., Officer Lasley and Sgt. Crume were dis- patched to a traffic accident in the 100 block of Boothe Drive. The damage to the vehicles were minor and neither driver requested an accident report. At 9:36 p.m., Chief Keith Webb and Officers Michael Krcnck and Randy Schlauch were dispatched to an attempted suicide at a residence in the 400 block of Scott St. The Texana Mental Health Agency was called and the subject was transported to a facil- ity for a mental health evaluation. On Dec. 29, at 2:30 p.m., Sgt. Crume and a Fort Bend County Dep- uty arrested John Edward Hodde at 1750 Calhoun Road for a bond forfei- ture/theft by check warrant issued out of Fort Bend County. Hodde was processed at the ELPD and trans- ported to the Colorado County Deten- tion Center (CCDC) for confinement. COLORADO COUNTY SHERIFF'S REPORT ^ JJ The Colorado County Sheriff's Department reported the following cases for the period ending Dec. 11 Saturday, Dec. 2, at 12:03 a.m., Deputy Toppel checked out a suspi- cious vehicle on FM 3013 and County Road 210. After further investigation, Gustavo Hernandez, 50, of Eagle Lake was arrested for public intoxica- tion and tampering with a government record. At 7:08 p.m., Deputies Basco and Toppel responded to a call concerning a possible domestic dispute on Reese Lane. After further investigation, An- dres Colunga, 54 of Alleyton was ar- rested for family violence assault. Sunday, Dec. 3, at 6:15 p.m., De- puty Basco responded to call concern- ing a theft in Garwood. The complain- ant reported a S mith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic handgun had been taken from the residence. The pistol was entered into the TCIC/NCIC database as stolen. The case is pending recovery of the pistol and development of a suspect Friday, Dec. 8,at2:56a.m, Deputy Pardo responded to a call concerning a subject playing loud music. Deputy Pardo responded to the residence on FM 2761 three different occasions in one night concerning the loud music. After the third report of loud music by neighbors, Donnie Franklin Surov- cak, 39, of Cat Spring, was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting ar- rest. Saturday, Dec. 9, at 11 p.m., Depu- ties Leal and Basco initiated a traffic stop on FM 806. After further investi- gation, Ronald Ray Cockren Sr., 50, of Columbus was arrested for no dri- ver's license and expired registration. Sunday, Dec. 10, art 2:25 a.m., Deputies Leal and Basco and Sgts. Edman and Zermeno responded to a call concerning a possible domestic disturbance on FM 949 Bernardo Rd. After further investigation. Martin Monjaras Garay, 29, of Cat Spring was arrested on two charges of family violence assault At 2 p.m., Deputy Lacourse met with a complainant at a residence in Sheridan. The complainant reported a subject had hit him and broken out the window of his car. After further investigation, Wil- liam Michael Shaffer, 18, of Sheridan was arrested for family violence as- sault. Monday, Dec. 11, at 4:51 p.m., Sgt. Pavlicek responded to a call con- cerning an assault at a residence on Interstate 10. After further investiga- tion, Joann Marie Goodman was ar- rested for assault family violence and one juvenile was transported to the Eagle Lake Boot Camp. Although a multitude of theories claim to explain the origins of stutter- ing, this condition appears to be caused by abnormal timing in brain processes which are involved in producing speech. Single case reports indicate that several medications including gabapentin (Neurontin). Lamotrigene (Lamictal), clozapine (Clozaril), and theophylline (Theo-Dur) can cause stuttering. The SSRIs which in- clude/7;<0.Yefme (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft) can have stuttering as a possible adverse effect. In most situations, stuttering resolves after the offending medicine is discontinued. Various treatments have been at- | tempted. Things that distract the mind from the fear of stuttering often can relieve the problem temporarily. Research is showing that taking low doses of the drug olanzapine (Zyprexa) can make stuttering virtu- ally disappear. Speech therapy may help control the problem as well. Fluency shaping can help a person speak more easily and fluently. Self . help groups such as Speak Easy benefit many who seek assistance. took some gardening tools and other miscellaneous items. A report was taken; the case is under investigation. On Dec. 31, at 12:34 a.m., Officer Wendy Alley conducted a traffic stop in the 700 block of Heritage Lane and arrested James Davis for driving while license suspended. Davis was proc- essed at the ELPD and transported to the CCDC for confinement. At 4:15 a.m., Officer Alley took a burglary report at the Sportsman's Restaurant. The suspect(s) had appar- ently forced open the west side door and gained entry into the building. The case is under investigation. On Jan. 1, at approximately 3:43 a.m., Officer Alley located a stolen vehic le i n the 500 block of S. McCarty Ave. The vehicle was reported stolen from Waco. Deputy Sgt. Zermeno of the Colorado County Sheriffs De- partment/Auto Theft Task Force was called to the scene. The investigation was turned over Zermeno and Mauro Blanco was ar- rested for unauthorized use of a ve- hicle. Blanco was transported to CCDC for confinement. Three occupants in the vehicle were questioned and released. At 2 p.m., Deputy Lacourse met with a complainant at a residence in Sheridan. The complainant reported a subject had hit him and broken out the window of his car.

After further investigation, Wil- liam Michael Shaffer, 18, of Sheridan was arrested for family violence as- sault.

Monday, Dec. 11, at 4:51 p.m., Sgt. Pavlicek responded to a call con- cerning an assault at a residence on Interstate 10. After further investiga- tion, Joann Marie Goodman was ar- rested for assault family violence and one juvenile was transported to the Eagle Lake Boot Camp.

Some Medicines Can Cause Stuttering Stuttering is a condition in which the flow of a person's speech is

broken by stoppages, repetitions, or prolongation of sounds or syllables.

Although a multitude of theories claim to explain the origins of stutter-

ing, this condition appears to be caused by abnormal timing in brain

processes which are involved in producing speech.

Single case reports indicate that several medications including

gabapentin (Neurontin). Lamotrigene (Lamictal), clozapine (Clozaril),

and theophylline (Theo-Dur) can cause stuttering. The SSRIs which in-

clude/7;<0.Yefme (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft) can have stuttering as a

possible adverse effect. In most situations, stuttering resolves after the

offending medicine is discontinued. Various treatments have been at- |

tempted. Things that distract the mind from the fear of stuttering often

can relieve the problem temporarily. Research is showing that taking

low doses of the drug olanzapine (Zyprexa) can make stuttering virtu-

ally disappear. Speech therapy may help control the problem as well.

Fluency shaping can help a person speak more easily and fluently. Self .

help groups such as Speak Easy benefit many who seek assistance.

On Dec. 31, at 12:34 a.m., Officer Wendy Alley conducted a traffic stop in the 700 block of Heritage Lane and arrested James Davis for driving while license suspended. Davis was proc- essed at the ELPD and transported to the CCDC for confinement.

At 4:15 a.m., Officer Alley took a burglary report at the Sportsman's Restaurant. The suspect(s) had appar- ently forced open the west side door and gained entry into the building. The case is under investigation.

On Jan. 1, at approximately 3:43 a.m., Officer Alley located a stolen vehic le i n the 500 block of S. McCarty Ave. The vehicle was reported stolen from Waco. Deputy Sgt. Zermeno of the Colorado County Sheriffs De- partment/Auto Theft Task Force was called to the scene.

The investigation was turned over Zermeno and Mauro Blanco was ar- rested for unauthorized use of a ve- hicle. Blanco was transported to CCDC for confinement.

Three occupants in the vehicle were questioned and released.
