Capacitance

Audio cables and their influence on sound qualityCables influence the sound of a guitar in two ways. One is their capacitance – this can range from 115 pF/m (entry-level cables) to 67 pF/m (pro cables) for instrument cables. The other is their influence on the guitar pickup’s resonant frequency. A lower capacitance number in picofarads is better. CapacitanceCapacitance is a property of every electrical conductor - including cables. The higher the capacitance, the higher the signal attenuation, espe-cially at high frequencies. But the overall capacitance of a cable also depends on the cable length. Capacitance increases as the length of a cable increases, so that cables should be as short as possible.

And capacitance also depends on the design of the cable. It is well worth comparing cables to find out which models offer ultra-low capaci-tance and which deliver the most authentic sound. Like the KLOTZ TITANIUM cable range or the LaGrange for instruments and the M5 for mi-crophones, for example. Resonant frequencyResonant frequency is the frequency that is reproduced most strongly by a pickup. This resonant frequency is influenced in turn by the capac-itance of the cable. This is why a guitar may sound over-bright or shrill at ultra-low capacitance levels, and why instrument cables are never produced with capacitance as low as microphone cables. For example, the Joe Bonamassa Signature Cable has a capacitance of 70 pF/m because Joe seeks a warm guitar sound. As a general princi-ple, high-quality cables simply bring out the instrument’s own sound more effectively. SummaryEven in the worst cases, the change in sound which results from the cable’s influence on resonant frequency is nowhere near as bad as the loss in high frequencies which comes from using high-capacitance cables. To put it simply, the lower the capacitance, the higher-quality the cable.

“The German engineers at Klotz have rethought guitar cable design. Instead of using the standard ‘cen-

ter conductor/insulation/shielding’ scenario, which is used by virtually all other cable manufacturers,

Klotz adds a conductive plastic material in between the center conductor and the copper shielding. Of

course, this conductive plastic is insulated on both sides from the conductors (center conductor and the

shielding).

The conductive plastic is not connected to anything electrically, so it is not a path to ground. The electrons

on the copper shielding cannot “see” the center conductor through the conductive plastic shielding and

the electrons on the center conductor cannot “see” the copper shielding through the conductive plastic

shielding, so the electrons are forced to go all the way to the amplifier’’s input rather than “jumping ship”

across the cable.

How does this affect tone? The signal getting to the amp is the same signal that came from the guitar, re-

sulting in noticeably longer sustain, more focus, and better clarity. The clarity is particularly noticeable

when playing close voicings, such as a major 7th or a minor 9th. But most of all, it lacks the filtered sound

found in other cables.”

From A Magazine Review

Feel the textile outer jacket of this instrument cable to bring memories flooding back. Memories of great hand-made mu-sic, of an era when bands were still named after their bandleader. What’s inside the jacket is naturally proven KLOTZ quality throughout. The proven cable, with low capacitance of 115 pF/m, has a conductive plastic shield plus a bare copper spiral shield. The textile jacket not only gives the cable its good looks, but also adds extra resilience and protection without impairing its high flexibility.

The high-quality metal connector has a gold tip. A shrink sleeve at each end gives added anti-kink protection. The “59” logo is engraved on the connector sleeve as a final affec-tionately detailed touch. The ‘59 will be launched as a 3-metre an 4.5-metre cable.

Musical memories need not be locked away - bring them back to life with KLOTZ ‘59 Vin-tage Guitar Cable.

“The “Funkmaster” is designed primarily for bass but is a pretty nice sounding guitar cable. I sort of nick-named it the “smile” cable because it had strong lows and highs, with the mids sounding a bit attenuat-ed. Both cables handled very well in their rubber jackets, with the thinner Funkmaster getting the nod for flexibilityBoth are well made and should hold up well under duress.”

“The “Funkmaster” has a warm but clear top with good detail and transient response and a bit of mid-range emphasis. It has a typical cable diameter with good flexibility. Its unusual orange aluminum plugs have heat shrink over the connections, plus an unusual spring strain relief. Should be a sturdy cable that brings home the funk.”

La GrangeSupreme Guitar Cable

Premier Guitar, May 2008 “The LaGrange was loud and punchy, with a full range guitar spectrum that was well balanced. The mids were well-detailed and highs very present without being strident. Good picking attack transients combined with excellent sustain. Definitely a cable I could listen to for hours.”

“The LaGrange has a big bottom and clear top, nicely detailed with super tran-sient response. The traditional diameter cable is a bit stiff and coily, but not

really a problem. The built-in strain relief of the Neutrik plugs should help this cable last a long time.”Guitar Player Magazine , May 2008

“With its midrange zing and abundant low-end, the La Grange is a muscular-sounding cable that melds clarity and string-to-string detail with an impressive punch.”Guitar Player Editors Pick Award, Guitar Player Magazine, October 2003

“We tested the 10‘ LaGrange model (...) with a variety of guitars and amps, and found it to be one of the clear-est and most coherent sounding cables we´ve ever tried - not surprising considering it´s low total capacitance (cable and connectors). Notes spring from the speakers sounding focused and aligned, and the note detail and top-to-bottom balance is extraordinary. The LaGrange even brings out a little extra beefiness in the low-end - which is truly the mark of a cable that´s revealing all the sonic goodies your guitar has to offer.”

Up to now, the issue of whether it was actually possible to radically improve an instrument cable was largely a question of faith. Of course, gradual enhancements were always introduced and enormous efforts and ambition were expended – but it’s only now that a genuine revolution is under way.

In the past, musicians were faced with the choice of great sound OR low cable microphony. The high end TITANIUM cable guarantees both: superb sound quality PLUS minimal microphony. The TITANIUM not only delivers outstanding signal quality and tone; it’s also so rugged and tough that subsonic noise, motion noise, static and interference are reduced to negligible levels. These sonic and mechanical properties, plus Neutrik connectors (optionally with “Silent Plug“™), combine with the KLOTZ a.i.s. hallmark of long-standing technology experience to give an absolutely unique high-end cable. When electric guitars and electric basses - such as those by Gibson, Rickenbacker, PRS (Paul Reed Smith) and Godin - have a stereo output, they divide the pickup signals that would normally be transmitted from a single output into two different channels. Each signal can be transmitted separately. These instruments need a stereo cable with a three-pin stereo jack connector at one end and two mono jacks at the other. We chose once again robust, slim Neutrik jack connectors for its KLOTZ Vario Stereo Guitar Cable and its tried-and-tested KIK cable for the Vario. Its high withdrawal force delivers maxi-mum stability, while double shielding including a conductive plastic shield reliably pro-tects against electromagnetic interference. • Very flexible• Two channels stereo design• High-quality copper core (99.95% pure ETP copper)• Double shielding•Neutrik jacks• Authentic and noisless signal transmission• Successfully tested with 25,000 bendings

Even the best guitar cables can’t be expected to work miracles if low-grade cables are used to transmit signals between the individual effect pedals. To eliminate this problem, KLOTZ supplies Pedal Patchers to connect up effect pedals. These patch cables for pedals are an integral part of KLOTZ’s individual cable ranges. They are supplied in short patch lengths and are available with straight or angled connectors as required. As stage life can be tough, they are designed to be just as rugged as their longer cousins used to connect guitars or amps.

Very often we find that users con-sider speaker cables only of minor significance in the system. This is a considerable mistake.

Modern power amps and stage designs with long cable runs load-ing into speaker systems set new standards and requirements for speaker cables.

RamCAT 5 MobileToday’s event technology involves increasing numbers of applications that require data cables, which have to be durable enough to withstand extreme conditions at mobile events. Our solution: Mobile network cables. These cables are extremely durable and solid, yet also suitable for drum storage – a combination that is achieved by meticulously aligning design and materials. The RC5 and RC5SU have a PUR outer jacket and inner TPE jacket for added resilience, while the RC5SB and RC6 also have a PUR outer jacket and an inner PE cross separator throughout the length of the cable. These design features result in outstanding performance, as confirmed by other manufacturers: the RC5 is recommended by Yamaha UK for DanteTM up to 75 metres, by DigiGram for EtherSound up to 75 metres, and by Allen & Heath for iLive ACE/dSnake up to 120 metres. The RC5 delivers quality transmission at lengths of up to 60 metres in CAT operation. And the RC5SB outdoes this by transmitting over distances of up to 120 metres for Dante™, up to 100 metres for etherSound, approximately 150 metres for iLive ACE/dSnake and up to 100 metres for CAT transmission. CAT Professional Patch:Sometimes equipment can be connected directly, eliminating the need for a network. A normal patch cable can transmit over distances of up to 50 metres. While we naturally also supply these cables, we urgently recommend one of our proven RamCAT Mobile Cables for mobile applications, as only these models guarantee interfer-ence-free long-term operation. CAT5: Category 5 is suitable for operating frequencies of up to 100 MHz. Our CAT5 cables (except RC5SU) have four unshielded pairs in an overall braided shield. A CAT5 cable can be used for 100 Mb to 1 Gb Ethernet. CAT7: Category 7 (Class F) is suitable for operating frequencies of up to 600 MHz, Category 7A (Class FA) for up to 1000 MHz. CAT7 cables have four individually shield-ed pairs (screened/foil-shielded twisted pairs, S/FTP) enclosed in an overall braided shield. A CAT5 cable is designed for 10-GB Ethernet. As a general rule for data cables in the event industry, the network protocols usually used there, such as Dante™, etherSound Giga and Audio/Video Bridging, use a maximum of 1 Gb bandwidth; all other protocols use significantly less. CAT5 cables such as RamCAT cables are therefore perfectly adequate in over 95 per cent of all cases; the maximum possible transmission lengths are not related to the line classifications.NOTE: MADI is not an Ethernet protocol! Special requirements apply as given by the specific manufacturers!
