Students are asked to research the physics concepts involved in safe driving and car accidents, focusing on features that involve momentum calculations and stopping distances. They are asked to identify and explain some safety features of a car, using mathematical examples. They then consider how the physics of these features can be communicated to others. They will create a PowerPoint presentation communicating scientific information and demonstrate how drivers' decisions can make driving safer.
Students are asked to research either an actual roller coaster or to design one. They will consider the g-forces involved and safety, as well as calculating values of speed and acceleration on their ride of choice. It involves calculation as well as just using simulations from the web.
