Fresh Air

Sometimes the air just stinks.

Whether the root cause is mold,

running out of deodorant, or proving

you can eat the entire can of Bush’s

Baked Beans in one sitting,

sometimes we just need to open the

window and let a fresh wind fill the

musty spaces of our lives. It’s no

wonder that the Hebrew and Greek

words for air or breath (ruach and

pneuma respectively) are also used

for spirit. Just like cracking the

windows in your home or car, the

Holy Spirit can enter into the most

foul-smelling areas of our lives and

bring a freshness to everything we

say and do. But sometimes the

windows seem to stick and we need

help cracking them open. Here’s one

way St. Peter’s First is committing

to help you open the windows of

your soul to the work of God this

fall.

The Teaching Team, led by Dan

Jarvis, is kicking off five group

studies through Fresh Air: The Holy

Spirit For An Inspired Life by Jack

Levison. The studies will be highly

interactive discussions around the

reading and begin the week of

September 20th. Some will meet in

homes and others will meet at the

church. As I mentioned in August

23rd’s sermon, this is easily the

richest and easiest to read resource

on the Holy Spirit that I’ve come

across in my studies. Jack Levison,

the author, writes in the introduction

that he “aims to place the true

heritage of the holy spirit of God

back in your hands. My hope is that

it will lead you to a richer, more

robust experience rooted in the

resources of the Bible… this is no

friendly introduction. It will be

controversial. It will be provocative.

It will be unsettling because that is

the character of the holy spirit, at

least according to the record we

have in the Bible.”

There will be five groups offered

at various times throughout the week

to accommodate the busiest of

schedules and I strongly recommend

that all of you consider blocking out

time in those eight weeks to join one

of these groups so we can keep

growing and maturing in Christ

together for the sake of others. We

ask that participants donate $5

toward the cost of the books and

invite you all to join us on this

journey with the Holy Spirit this fall.

I can’t wait to see which of you will

be joining me in the group I’m a part

of!

Obstacle Courses & Horses

My two favorite television shows are the Canadian drama,

Heartland, and American Ninja Warrior. They have easily taken

their rightful place as favorites because I connect deeply with both.

What I’ve come to love about Heartland over the last seven

seasons (that I’ve watched numerous times) and American Ninja

Warrior is the reality of the shows and also how much story is

involved. Heartland is a family drama that takes place in the

beautiful Canadian countryside. Immediately you are welcomed

into the story of those who live, work, and experience the

Heartland ranch. American Ninja Warrior is about people

overcoming grueling, crazy, and challenging physical obstacles but

is chalk full of the stories and journeys of the individuals involved.

The heart of the show, Heartland, is the lives of one particular

family and all that life brings. You quickly feel like the Bartlett/

Fleming clan is your family or a family you want to be a part of.

Their lives are just like yours: filled with pain, loss, challenges,

anger, misunderstandings, sadness, joy, celebration, love, and

hope. There is a beautiful underlying theme of redemption that

runs throughout the show. Things that are broken are made new.

Relationships that had been torn apart over time find a new reality.

One of the main characters in the show, Amy, has a gift for

working with horses. People will travel from all over to have her

work with their troubled, abused, or off kilter horse. Amy seeks to

understand the horse and the situation and never writes a horse off

because of one bad experience. It’s a trying battle in many cases,

but the key to her success is rooted in forming a bond of trust. She

then uses this to help the owner form this same relationship with

their own horse. Amy also provides hope for abused horses to

show them what a loving, trusting relationship looks like.

Another beautiful aspect of the show is family. How the

Bartlett/Fleming family chooses to live explains a lot about their

definition of family. In nearly every episode you see the family

gathering together around the table for a meal. There’s often a

joke about setting another place or what uninvited guest will arrive.

That’s the beauty of it. Everyone is welcome at their table. The

definition of family is rooted not in blood but in a deep relational

bond of love, trust, and community. Family is about the people

who will be there for you no matter what, the people who will

believe in you and push you forward, the people who you can hurt

and through love, mercy, and forgiveness, walk forward together.

Throughout the show, you see this motley crew stand with each

other through anything and form one of the most beautiful pictures

of family, love, community, and redemption that I’ve seen.

“Love is born when we misunderstand each other and make it

right.” Shauna Niequist

The connections between these two shows are pretty amazing

considering how different they really are. In American Ninja

Warrior redemption is such a clear theme as individuals fall or slip

up once and are out for the rest of the season. Instead of giving up,

they spend the entire next year training and pushing themselves

forward. It is an awesome moment to witness someone overcome

and stand atop the warped wall (check that out online) after a

devastating early exit previously. Last year Flip went out early and

was completely devastated. After receiving countless emails, mail,

and words of encouragement from people he knew and random

strangers, he got back in the game. He came out with a whole new

approach and it was awesome to see this transformation take place

in his life.

Even though the show is about the Ninja Warrior competition,

it really has very little to do with competition as we would

normally see it. It is one of the only sporting competitions of its

type where there is such a genuine support of one another and

family atmosphere. Everyone has each other’s back and wants the

next guy to succeed. There is always a fellow competitor on the

sidelines cheering and offering advice as someone attacks the

course. There are groups of individuals who have formed a deep

relationship through their ninja warrior experience and support one

another like family. A newbie was having trouble on one of the

obstacles and a ninja veteran yelled from the sidelines to wipe off

his shoes. Sure enough he conquered the obstacle. It’s that sense

of unity, community, and vision that if someone wins we all win.

As I watch, I find myself wanting to be a part of both of these

beautiful communities. In both I think I’d find a family/

community of people I care deeply about and that also care deeply

for me. A group of people that will be there for one another

through anything. I can’t help but think of the body of Christ when

I think about these two pictures of family. What a unique, diverse,

unexpected, and yet beautiful community we are gathered together

around Christ’s table. We are united by blood, Christ’s blood for

us. My life is far from that of either of these shows because I don’t

look out my window and see the Canadian countryside and I do not

have a homemade ninja gym in my backyard. But what I do have

are these same beautiful experiences of redemption, love, family,

and community. I have moments and opportunities where I

experience the body of Christ. I have that same sense of

belonging, of being myself, and of being supported that draw me to

both of these shows.

Where do you find community? Where do you experience this

beautiful picture of the body of Christ in your life? Spend some

time with God asking him to reveal these places and opportunities

for redemptive community

for you.

HKC Update

*HKC (Huntington Kids Club) will be kicking off the new year on Monday, September 21st. HKC

meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30 pm for kids in 2nd-6th grade (or ages 8-12). Registration

forms will be available in the William St. foyer later this month.

*Van Driver Needed: We are looking for someone to drive the SPFCC church van to transport kids to

and from HKC on Monday evenings. This volunteer would need to be available from 6-6:30 pm and

8:30-9 pm each Monday. If you are interested in this or other volunteering opportunities with HKC

please let Megan Condry know.

Celebration Moment: The kids have had a blast this summer as we’ve learned about the armor of God.

It’s so encouraging to see them remembering the different pieces of armor and applying how they can

be used to their lives!

A Note From the Ministry Coordinator:

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me

with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

Have fun! By definition, fun is someone or something

that is amusing or enjoyable. I often say, “I want to do

something fun,” but when someone asks me what that

means, I don’t really have an answer. What is fun? Can we

“have fun” in this day simply by enjoying what surrounds

us…the sunshine, the flowers, the sound of laughter, not to

mention the people in our lives? When I try to pinpoint

what I mean by “fun,” I realize I’m often seeking a feeling

that isn’t easy to find or achieve, and it makes me wonder,

“Does God want me to have fun?”

Thankfully, I’ve been reassured the answer is a

resounding YES! “The best that people can do is eat, drink,

and enjoy their work. I saw that even this comes from God,

because no one can eat or enjoy life without

him” (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25). As I have reflected on

whether or not my desire for fun is a Godly desire, I’m

realizing that, although I wish I could, maybe I can’t plan

fun. God places many things in my life that can be, and

should be, fun if only I would slow down long enough to

appreciate these things for what they are worth. I’ve had to

force myself to stop wandering ahead and instead to focus

on enjoying the present. When I’m in the middle of

something I enjoy, I’m often thinking about the ten things I

need to accomplish later in the day. When I’m out running

in the morning or when I’m playing with Eloise until she

goes to bed at night, I have to consciously ask God to keep

me in the moment instead of looking ahead to this activity

being finished so that I can cross more items off my to do

list. By focusing on the present, I’m better able to enjoy

fun experiences when God presents them. Things don’t

always go the way I plan or turn out the way I expect, but

that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun in these moments. I’m

continually humbled as God teaches me that I don’t need

to take myself so seriously and that it’s okay to laugh at

myself. This, too, can be fun!

As I reflect on fun, another question comes to mind, “Is

my desire for fun in some way a desire for God?” I think “I

want to do something fun,” could often be restated as, “I

want to experience God.” How do we experience God? We

seek Him. God tells us, “You will seek me and find me

when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).

Seeking God with my WHOLE heart is tough. I recently

read a devotional by Lysa TerKeurst that aligned well with

what I’ve been learning. In it, she states, “Seeking – really

seeking – is more than just reading a few verses from the

Bible in the morning and trying to be a good person that

day. Seeking requires me to sacrifice the things I feel

compelled to chase so I can be available to notice God’s

clear direction” (http://proverbs31.org/devotions/devo/

what-are-you-missing/). God will direct us…if we let Him.

My recent experiences with trying to “find fun” make me

realize I’m still trying way too hard to find my own way. “I

wonder sometimes why I feel a little insecure – a little

unsettled – a little disappointed with things I thought

would make me so happy” (Lysa TerKeurst). Instead of

being present in the things that make me happy, I’m

distracted by trying to achieve something more. When I

slow down enough to allow God to direct my path, He

shows me that fun is all around me and that opportunities

to experience Him are surrounding me. I don’t need to seek

fun. I need to seek Him. In doing so, I will find Him, and

He will lead me to the things He knows will satisfy my

deepest desires.

The challenge in this

for me is seeking God with

my WHOLE heart. That

means intentionally doing

something each day that

helps me experience God.

As I sacrifice the things I

feel compelled to chase, as

I stop seeking fun, and instead seek God with my whole

heart, I realize experiencing God becomes a way of life

and having fun happens naturally. God isn’t present only in

certain situations or scenarios, but in all we do. Often, the

challenge to seek God with my whole heart becomes a

challenge for me to relax, breathe, laugh, play, and explore.

It’s a challenge to be still before God, a challenge to

experience God in the everyday messes in which I find

myself, a challenge to enjoy the silliness of life.

May you spend time reflecting on what it means to

seek God with your whole heart. May you experience God

this day. And, in doing so, may you have fun enjoying the

things that surround you...the sunshine, the flowers, the

sound of laughter, the people, and, most importantly,

God’s presence in your life! ~Megan Engle

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is

made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly

about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
