A Letter from Judith Dittman, CEOEach year we produce our annual report to tell you how many young people and their families Second Story has helped, how we have used the funds and donations that you entrusted to us, and the impact those dollars have had on young people in our community.

Looking back over the last year, it is clear that our established programs are strong and our community support is amazing. But it is also clear that we must redouble our efforts at sustaining our services and grow-ing our programs – the number of young people who need our help is increasing at an alarming rate. We have waiting lists of homeless young people who want to come into our programs and after-school programs that are overflowing. Despite flat or declining government funding and ever-increasing operating costs, Second

Story is more committed than ever to ensuring that any young person who needs our help will receive it. I’m very proud of all we accomplished this past year. Hundreds of young people were helped during moments of crisis because of our safe havens and essential support at a critical time in their lives.

We didn’t do it alone, though. For the eighth year in a row we received the highest rating a nonprofit can achieve on Charity Naviga-tor, a strong testament to our fiscal responsibility and program effectiveness. And you’ve been right there with us. Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to provide the critical shelter and support needed by vulnerable, homeless and at-risk youth – the kind of help they need to begin a “second story."

I invite you to read this, our 2018 Second Story Annual Report, and discover more about the essential role we – and you – play in helping the at-risk youth of our community.

Thank you.Judith Dittman, CEO

Our ProgramsSecond Story for Teens in CrisisThe shelter is a completely voluntary program for young people 13 to 17 years old. In addition to safe shelter, food and clothing, each teen receives intensive individual, group and family counseling and help keeping up with their education.

Second Story for Homeless YouthSecond Story for Homeless Youth helps homeless high school students and youth with housing and case management using a combination of host homes, rental as-sistance, and rapid re-housing.

Second Story for Young MothersSecond Story for Young Mothers provides housing, counsel-ing and training to homeless women aged 16 to 24 who are pregnant or have young children. With a focus on parenting skills, completing an education, job readiness, and basic self-sufficiency, young women learn to support themselves and their children.

Second Story in the CommunitySecond Story serves the communities of Culmore, Annandale, and Springfield through Family Resource Centers, Safe Youth Projects, and a Teen Center.

Sam's StoryWhen “Sam” was very young he moved in with his older sister, “Sarah,” so he had never had a close relationship with his parents. It was difficult for Sam to live with Sarah. She expected him to care for her young children and do much of her housework. Sam was forced to grow up quickly; while he watched his peers go to sports practice or hang out with friends, he hardly even had time for homework. One day, Sam and his sister got into a big argument and Sam’s sister kicked him out of her house. Filled with fear, Sam realized he had nowhere to go.

For the next year Sam moved from different friends' and family member’s homes, sleeping on couches and in his car. Meanwhile, his grades got worse and worse. Sam eventually confided in his mentor, one of the only stable relationships in his life, about the things he was experiencing. His mentor immediately came to his side and helped him find Second Story for Homeless Youth.

Sam moved into his own apartment and quickly brought up his grades. He graduated on time, and has since gotten a full-time position in the electrical engineering field! He hopes to get certified in the position soon. Because of Second Story’s support, Sam saved enough money to buy his own car and learned more about planning for the future so he can achieve his dreams of being an electrical engineer. Sam recently told Second Story staff that he could not have accomplished all he has in the past year without our support.

NEW! Our PodcastIn October of 2018 we released a pilot season of a podcast, Second Stories, with the aim of sharing more stories of people who have experienced hardship in their youth and written their own second story. Our team interviewed eight people, a mixture of former clients and others, located all over the U.S. but each having grown up and experiencing hard-ship in our community. One even stayed at our Emergency Shelter for Teenagers in its first year! Their stories included challenges like unexpected pregnancies, abuse, homelessness, adoption, poverty, and, for each of them, people and experiences that helped them write their second story. We wanted to bring their stories to light and further understand-ing for issues faced by young people in the DC metro area. Each individual was generous and honest to share their story, and we received eager feedback from those who listened. Rich T, a listener, summarized it warmly, “You listen to these personal stories of new hope, and you wonder what the stories would be if Second Story was NOT there to help. Makes you feel like you have to be part of the solution.” To listen to the podcast visit www.second-story.org/podcasts.

24-hour Crisis Hotline Emergency hotline open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for young people and families who need help or are in crisis. Teens can also text TEENHELP to 855-11 to reach a live counselor.
