A Landscape Scale Financing Mechanism

• Modelling Transition Costs to Sustainability • Application of US$1 – 2 billion Green Bonds

Model the Cost of Transition at a Landscape Scale

1. Ecosystem Services

2. Sustainable Supply Chains:

• Beef, soy, palm, aquaculture etc.

3. Resilient Livelihoods

WHAT SCALE OF INVESTMENT? Institutional investors say Natural Capital projects are too small. They ideally need to invest at US$ 0.5 – 2 billion scale Transition costs of agriculture are ideal – needing upfront investments in sub-national regions costing 1-2 US$ billion - in Acre alone. Needs ‘patient capital’ over 20-30 years Capital markets could use large scale Green Bonds with transformation of sub-national economies

Community Monitoring Reporting & Verificaton - MRV

• Quantify change?

• Pay for Performance

• Who should benefit?

• Safeguards

Page 9: A Landscape Solution?

Top Down meets Bottom Up

• National MRV systems + Local C-MRV

• National = Remote Sensing / Space

• Needs “Ground Truth”

• Local = Verification + Incentives + Equity

• Communities well placed to provide this

• And receive benefits in return
