And behold, I am with you always! We’re supposed to celebrate Easter as a season of joy. But joy can be hard to find when our life is in a turmoil. When we’re experiencing a financial crisis, a family crisis, a job crisis, a faith crisis, or any crisis at all, we need someone to help us get to a place where we can feel the love that Jesus has for each and every one of us.A Stephen Minister can be your confidential partner when times are tough. Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodThere are various traumatic events in life. In my youth and in most of my early adult life, these events usually included a family member or friend becoming seriously ill or passing away, or the loss of a career position. Since then, technology has invaded most of our everyday life. We carry around little devices which act as our substitute brains. They keep track of our calendar, our important contact numbers, and let our friends into our life through social media. For those of us who might be considered more mature, another traumatic experience is getting a new smart phone! That was our experience last month. One of our mobile phones was out of date and the other became disabled after an accident. As we embarked on a search for new devices, our minds raced with questions. Will my contacts be transferred; will we still have the photos of the kids and grandkids, and so on? For us this was trauma in the modern age.On this Seventh Sunday of Easter, most Catholics in the United States celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Traditionally, Ascension Thursday occurred 40 days after Easter, however, most dioceses in the U.S. have transferred this Holy Day of Obligation to the Sunday following it, which is today.Think back to what the Apostles had experienced in the past month or so; joy on Palm Sunday, sadness at the agony and death of their leader, and joy again in the resurrection of Jesus. Now after being with them, they see Him leave again by ascending into heaven. Additionally they have just been charged to “make disciples of all nations.” This could be a traumatic event for fishermen who had put their futures in

the hands of their Messiah. Struggling with a new technological device seems to pale in comparison to what they experienced. From scripture we know that within a week, on Pentecost, they will be strengthened by the Holy Spirit and with this force they will succeed in their vocations. Through our Baptism we have received the same charge, the same

vocation that the Disciples did.We are called, and we must work each day to respond to that calling. That is what being a good steward is about.

When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began more than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly in a state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a place that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go to be renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace. We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

The Ascension by Fr. Larry Rice

On the Feast of the Ascension, the church celebrates the return of Christ to the Father, his physical body leaving the earth behind. In John’s Gospel, Jesus makes it clear that his return to the Father is necessary so that the Holy Spirit can be given to his disciples. For many years, this feast was celebrated as a Holy Day of Obligation on the Thursday after the 6th Sunday of Easter.

The precise date moved from year to year, as the date of Easter moved based on the lunar calendar. Not long ago, most of the dioceses in the United States moved the celebration of the Ascension to the 7th Sunday of Easter. Why is the Ascension important or necessary? Why couldn’t the risen Christ have simply stayed with us, guiding the Church on Earth for all time? Imagine what the world would look like today if Christ had not ascended. If Christ

were still walking the earth, what would faith be? Where would our free will be?My own opinion is that it was necessary for Christ to ascend and send the Holy Spirit so that our faith would matter, and our free will remain intact. God is still with us, and present to us, but in ways that allow us to freely choose to accept or reject his grace. Christ is present in the Eucharist, in the Word of God proclaimed, and in his Body, the Church. The Holy Spirit is present to us, dwelling within us, received at our Baptism and sealed at our Confirmation. But these ways of remaining with us are not so concrete that our free will is collapsed. We have the ability to choose the Good, and to choose to accept God's grace, and he's never going to do anything that makes that choice less meaningful. So the feast of the Ascension is important to us, not because it’s a big “good-bye” to Jesus, but because it ushers in a new era in which Christ continues to be present to us, and in which the Holy Spirit dwells in the hearts of all believers. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Avoiding gossipOften, there are many ways to solve a problem, and many possible solutions. If you teach your children to problem solve creatively, and think outside the box when they are faced with a challenge, this can help them formulate problem-solving skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. By using creative problem solving methods, parents and children can brainstorm new ideas to protect kids from stranger danger, abuse, violence, and the other risks present in the world. Discuss possible solutions and highlight common themes to help your children develop strategies for staying safe. MEMORIAL DAY: wE tHAnK tHEM

Once a year we pause to remember those who gave their lives for you and me, men and women dressed in a uniform sent for the cause of liberty.Starting with our own revolution they have marched throughout history, giving of themselves unceasingly for the cause of liberty. They paid the price for our freedom. Their sacrifice was meant for us. Unselfishly, they gave their lives for us. Their sacrifice has kept us free. And now we pray to the Lord above to hold them close to his heart. We pray to the Lord above for their comfort. And we pray to the Lord above for the peace they have earned, and we thank them, we thank them from our hearts.
