he purchase of the famous Crystal Cathedral by the Diocese of Orange in 2012 began a journey of transformation for St. Callistus Parish. On this Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2014, we celebrate a major event in this jour-ney as St. Callistus Parish from this day forward will be known as Christ

Cathedral. The journey of St. Callistus Parish to becoming Christ Cathedral has been a com-plex and challenging process. Not only has it involved geographic and physical moves, it has also involved all the emotional responses that happen when there is major change. As in any transition, there have been times of misunderstanding and even hurt. At the same time, these incidents of misunderstanding have been far outweighed by the openness and generosity of all involved, to make this tran-sition work, even flourish, because this is what the Lord is calling us to do.

A new identity means new responsibilities. The vibrant and effective pastoral ministry that has gone on at St. Callistus Parish for over 50 years will continue. It is out of this wonderful context that Christ Cathedral is being called to take on its role as a cathedral parish, acting in the name of Bishop Vann in welcoming and serving people in the Diocese of Orange and far beyond. This new role is a challenge. It is also a profound privilege.

As Rector and Vice-Rector of Christ Cathedral with responsibility for pastoral ministry in service to the parish and the dio-cese, we are honored to serve you.

Another major milestone will be the dedication of the cathedral building as Christ Cathedral in 2016. When that day comes, we are confident that the people of Christ Cathedral Parish, fully engaged in their ministries as a cathedral parish, will proudly and gratefully be among those who open the doors of Christ Cathedral to the world.

Together in faith,

At last! The power hinted at and the Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. Try to listen to today’s scripture passages with some sense of how electrifying these events must have been to those who lived through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper room. In today’s first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues.

In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as re-ported in today’s Gospel reading, “Receive the Holy Spir-it.”Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SACRAMENTS

Penance, also known as confession and reconciliation, is one of the sacraments of healing in the Church. The sacrament encompasses four parts: contrition, confession, satisfaction or penance, and absolution.

Confessions are heard at Friday nights from 7:15 p.m. – 8:15p.m. and Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. respectively in the Church.

You may also call one of the priests to schedule a special time for the sacrament.

Reconciliation

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a women establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of off-spring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament

Marriage

Confirmation is the Sacrament in which baptized persons receive a special grace which strengthens them for the profession of the Christian faith.

Confirmation

Anointing of the Sick, is the Sacrament by which, through the prayers of a priest and the anointing with oil (blessed by the Bishop), a person who is in danger of death from sickness is given health of the soul and some-times also of the body. The oil which is used by the priests is blessed by the Bishop of Orange, on Holy Tuesday at the Chrism Mass.

RESTORING A STRUCTURE OF HOPETHE TOWER OF HOPE ON THE CHRIST CATHEDRAL

CAMPUS IS UNDERGOING A COMPREHENSIVE RENOVATION

By Greg Hardesty, OC Catholic

t stands like a single exclamation point on the Christ Cathedral campus, the tallest building in Orange

County when it was built in 1968.Now, the Tower of Hope – topped with a cross that, es-pecially when illuminated at night, has been a source of comfort and consolation for millions – is currently un-dergoing a major renovation, including state-of-the-art seismic upgrades and a complete interior refurbishing.“The Tower of Hope is a very important symbol in Or-ange County,” says Father Christopher Smith, episcopal vicar and rector of Christ Cathedral. “It has represented hope and refuge for tens of thousands of people every year. We are honoring the legacy of those who came be-fore us – the legacy of Christianity.”The $6.1 million renovation, part of the comprehensive remake of the former campus of the Crystal Cathedral, began in January and is due to be completed this sum-mer, said Newport Beach-based developer Rob Neal, Chairman of the Architecture and Renovation Commit-tee for Christ Cathedral.

7

The 13-story Tower of Hope will house staff members of Christ Cathedral Catholic Corp., which oversees the op-eration of the campus, as well as staff members of the Cathedral parish.During the renovation, employees formerly housed in the Tower of Hope are working out of the Pastoral Cen-ter, one of two buildings that have been remodeled since the Diocese of Orange purchased the landmark 34-acre property in November 2011.Also now open, following a complete overhaul and up-grading, is the Arboretum, the original sanctuary for Crystal Cathedral founder Robert Schuller’s congrega-tion, which is being used by parishioners of the Cathe-dral parish until the renovation of the former Crystal Cathedral in completed in 2016.Neal calls the Tower of Hope, designed by famed Aus-trian American architect Richard Neutra and his son, Dion, a unique and architecturally significant example of mid-20th century modernist design.Neal notes it was among the first commercial buildings in the U.S. to have a glass elevator with sweeping views of the outside. And, to free up interior space, Neutra and his son took the ingenious design step of mounting the elevator and stairwell on the exterior of the building, freeing up near-ly 1,650 square feet of usable space on each floor out of a footprint of 1,850, Neal says. The signature Chapel in the Sky on the top floor of the structure will be restored, as will Schuller’s office on the 12th floor, which still is available for use by him and his family.Named after the Hope Ministry, one of the first 24-hour suicide prevention hotlines sponsored by a church in the country, the Tower of Hope will become even more sta-ble in a seismically active area through state-of-the-art engineering, including wrapping columns in carbon-fi-ber mesh and installing seismic “dampers” that will act as shock absorbers in the event of an earthquake.“The building is safe now,” Neal says. “We’ll make it saf-er.” And, he adds, it will be built to last.“Most office buildings are designed to last 30, maybe 50 years,” Neal says, “but the Church likes to think in terms of centuries.

A JOURNEY OF FAITHST. CALLISTUS BECOMES CHRIST CATHEDRAL PARISH

By Caitlin Adams, OC Catholic

t’s been an eventful year for St. Callistus Parish, one that has brought a number of long-term changes for

the congregation. Beginning with the 2011 purchase of the former Crystal Cathedral, St. Callistus has led the way as the Diocese of Orange has created its new phys-ical and spiritual center.A number of notable events have marked the past 12 months for the parish, the most significant being the remarkable journey of faith from St. Callistus Church to the Christ Cathedral campus. On June 29, 2013, the former St. Callistus Church ended its operations with a solemn ceremony of closure and remembrance. Af-ter this tearful goodbye, Bishop Kevin Vann led cler-gy, parishioners and staff in a prayerful procession to their new home on the Christ Cathedral campus. On the same day, more than 3,000 St. Callistus parishioners celebrated a beautiful outdoor Mass at the campus, the first celebration of the Eucharist at their new home.Father Tuyen Nguyen, pastor of St. Callistus Church and now Vice-Rector of the Cathedral, has served the parish and congregation for 10 years. “It was natural-ly sad when we left the old church, but [as] a people of faith, we are aware of the call to go forward in faith be-cause we have ancestors and people in the Bible who made faithful journeys before us,” Father Nguyen says. “We are answering the call of the Lord to come to a new place.”

The Episcopal Vicar and Rector of Christ Cathedral, Father Christopher Smith, describes the transition as more than a simple move to a new building. It is, he says, “a very complex and challenging process.” “As St. Callistus Parish, the community’s radius of care was largely focused on those either registered or living within the territorial boundaries of the parish,” says Fa-ther Christopher. “As Christ Cathedral, the parish’s radi-us of care is greatly broadened because, as the bishop’s church, its celebrations and events regularly include participants from the larger Diocese of Orange and be-yond. This new role is a challenge. It is also a profound privilege.”The 50 years of pastoral ministry provided at St. Cal-listus Parish will continue at the congregation’s new home. One very discernable benefit of the move is the much larger venue.“We’re moving to a much grander place, from 1,500 seats to almost 3,000 seats,” says Father Nguyen. “The facili-ties are much newer and there are more resources.”Those resources come into play every week, when Christ Cathedral hosts 11 Sunday Masses for various commu-nities, and daily worship services in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Father Nguyen says that even a Sun-day Mass in Chinese has been added to the schedule.“We are moving forward to show the world that we are the parishioners of the Mother Church, and the bishop is our pastor. The congregation is very vibrant and rich in many ethnicities,” says Father Nguyen. “We are ex-pected to show the world how Catholics live their faith. We are blessed to worship in a place that celebrates our diversity and welcomes people of all races and ethnic backgrounds to worship the Lord together. The Cathe-dral parish truly reflects the diversity and faith of Or-ange County.”“The parish has already begun to grow into its new name. Now that the name is actually Christ Cathedral, the reality of becoming a cathedral parish will become more and more evident,” says Father Christopher. “The next major milestone will be the dedication of the ca-thedral building as Christ Cathedral in 2016. When that day comes, the people of Christ Cathedral parish will be deeply engaged in their responsibilities as a cathedral parish and will proudly and gratefully be among those who open the doors of Christ Cathedral to the world.”

CHRIST CATHEDRAL PARISH BULLETIN

ENGLISH The spiritual and temporal efforts to make the Christ Cathedral campus the true center of the Diocese of Or-ange are aimed at building a deeper unity of purpose and mission among Catholics within our local Church and a renewed commitment to permeat-ing the world with the love of Christ.

Flowing from the Eucharist, the source and summit of Catholic belief and practice, the Christ Cathedral cam-pus intends to be place of outreach to the materially poor and marginal-ized, catechesis, evangelization, ec-umenical dialogue, interreligious co-operation and theological discourse.

In the spirit of Christ, we welcome all people to come to be renewed in spir-it and truly know that they are loved by God. In addition to activities of the cathedral parish, diocese, parishes of the diocese, Catholic schools and Catholic organizations, the Christ Ca-thedral campus is a gathering place for cultural, civic and social events.
