Annual 2016 whisks us back to the American Civil War, but with a different viewpoint. Confederate Rails is a Richard Berg design in which you are a railroad magnate in the Confederacy, trying to accumulate the most cash by the end of the game while helping the Confederate effort by picking up and transporting goods, equipment, and troops to needed locations within the diminishing Confederate States as the Union forces advance. A game for 2-5 players that takes about 2 to 4 hours to play.

Issue #48 ports us back to the years 646A.D. to 656 A.D. and the Syrian-Muslim assault on Byzantium with Jason Juneau’s game Apocalypse in the East. The full color 22”x34” mapsheet portrays the theater of action. There are 280 1/2” counters that represent the forces (regimental size units) and markers to play the game. Turns represent 1 year of time. There are random events that include the Monothelete Controversy, earthquakes, nepotism by Caliph Uthmãn, purges in the Byzantine high command, and the introduction of Greek Fire. Can you hold out against the onslaught as Byzantium and maintain Christendom’s eastern march? Or as the Syrian player in control of their army and navy storm the greatest citadel on earth? The game takes 3-5 hours to play.

Issue #49 takes us to A Gate of Hell, literally, as we go to 1863 and the climactic battle for Charleston, South Carolina. As Pierre Gustav Toutant Beauregard, can you keep this strategic Confederate port out of Union hands? As General Quincy Adams Gilmore, can you successfully smash Confederate defenses and conquer one of the South’s lifelines to Europe?
