Encke arrived at Doncaster with one of the lowestprofiles of all of Godolphin=s past St Leger heroes, having won a 10-furlong handicap by a half length atSandown off an official handicap mark over 30 poundsbelow Camelot=s only three starts ago July 6. Beaten anose by Frankel=s brother Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo{Ire}) on his belated first pattern-race appearance in theG3 Gordon S. over 12 furlongs at Goodwood July 31,the bay was third behind Thought Worthy (Dynaformer)and Main Sequence (Aldebaran) in a renewal of the G2 Great Voltigeur that was effectively a meander-and-sprint affair. Rank here as the Gosden pacemaker Dartford (Giant=sCauseway) failed to set the fast fractions expected,Encke appeared to be traveling as well as Camelot, whohad steadily crept between rivals from rear inside thefinal three furlongs.

Whereas O=Brien took a moment to gather the favoriteat the quarter pole, Barzalona seized the day andCamelot=s rider quickly went from ice-cool to panic ashis mount failed to pick up instantly. Encke was in theclear by the time Camelot found top stride and the nineslaps with O=Brien=s whip were not enough to bring outthe familiar pizzazz of the previously unbeaten colt. This was a sixth St Leger victory for Godolphin, which places Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AlMaktoum=s operation joint-second on the all-time list. AThis horse would rank with the very best of ourwinners--it was a great effort,@ Racing Manager SimonCrisford commented. AMickael rode a beautiful race andwhen he kicked at the two pole, he put the race tobed.@ Winning trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni revealedafterwards that he had little faith in Encke=s Classic bid.AHe ran a good race in the Voltigeur, but I thought thatwas him and he was no more than that,@ he explained.AI thought he had no chance today and told Mickael tosave him and try and be placed, but he=s tough and keptgoing. In fairness to Mickael, he has always liked himand told me he had the class.@ Crisford added, AWe put a line through his run at Yorkand Mahmood had been very happy with his work in thebuild-up to the Leger and Sheikh Mohammed gave thegreen light to run him. We weren=t sure about hisstamina going into the race, but he=s quite stoutly bred,so we thought it wouldn=t be a problem. What we lovedabout that race was the turn of foot he showed, whichstands him in good stead for next season and he willstay in training. I would imagine it=s very unlikely he=llrun in the Arc, but we will see what Sheikh Mohammedwants to do. I would imagine he will have a plan gearedaround next summer. This is one of the great races ofthe British calendar and we have been very lucky to winit six times. We went into the race thinking we probablywouldn=t beat the favorite, but definitely fancying apiece of the pie and Mickael gelled really well with himtoday as we told him to keep an eye on the pacemakerand ride accordingly.@

St. Leger S. cont.

Camelot=s trainer Aidan O=Brien was dealing with thefall-out of the shock, which brought to an end the dreamof the Triple Crown John Magnier had described as aAno-brainer@ to chase minutes before the race. AI thoughtthe pace was going to be strong and I should have run apacemaker or two,@ O=Brien explained. AHe was where Iwould have wanted him to be and he had to relax himgoing this distance, but he just tanked a bit early and hadto take his time down the straight. He didn=t quicken likehe did in the Guineas and Derby, but that was liable tohappen as he was going a bit further than his distance.@As for what is next for Camelot, O=Brien added, AThething that was going on in my head was that, if he wasstaying in training next year, he wouldn=t run any morethis season, but the lads will make that decision.@ John Gosden was pleased with the effort of the third-placed Michelangelo. AMichelangelo has finished stronglyto get third,@ Gosden told PA Sport. AOur pacemaker set anice even gallop. There was no point going off like alunatic because they know you=re only rated70-something.@

Fittingly, Dawn Approach was the first winner for hissire, who achieved so much for Jim Bolger andcemented the Coolcullen maestro=s great renaissanceamong the training ranks. Given a break following hissuccess in Royal Ascot=s G2 Coventry S. June 19, thehandsome chestnut raced in third early yesterday, tracking his stable companion Leitir Mor as Flying theFlag (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set off in isolation. DawnApproach was committed running to the furlong poleand, despite a minor jink away from the whip, wasquickly in control as Flying the Flag was treading wateron the far side. Only Designs On Rome emerged fromthe pack in behind, but the Godolphin blue was waybeyond recall, not for the first time on a Saturday toremember for the set-up. AHe=s grown 3/4 of an inch since Royal Ascot andwas 12 kilos heavier today,@ trainer Jim Bolger said.AThe agreement was that I would have him until afterthe G1 Dewhurst S. [at Newmarket Oct. 13] and thatwe=d sit down and talk about it then. Obviously, I wouldbe hoping that Sheikh Mohammed leaves him with me,but if he doesn=t, I can=t complain.@ AIt was a very important day, but he did what Ithought he would do,@ Manning commented.APhysically, he=s done very well and he=s going the rightway. He hasn=t disappointed all year and has gone fromstrength to strength. Seamie [Heffernan] went veryquick--five-furlong pace--in front and it made it messybecause when you let a horse go that far clear, it=snever ideal. You can end up chasing them and whenthey fall in a hole, you end up in front too soon, but itturned out well. He=s been working very well and he=s avery smart horse.@ Cristoforo Colombo (Henrythenavigator) wasreportedly injured in transit and that outcome, pairedwith the poor efforts of the yard=s Nevis (Ire) (Galileo{Ire}) and Flying the Flag in the race, inflicted more woeon Aidan O=Brien=s team on an unusual day ofconsistent reversals for the operation.

AI was in a catch-22 situation asthis horse needs a mile, but I wasn=t going to go fastenough to set it up for the rest and at the some timenot going that fast wouldn=t suit me either. He has alovely way of galloping--he has a beautiful action andit=s a pleasure to be on him.@ Richard Hannon Jr. added,AHe did it very well and we had agreed before that, ifnothing went on, Hughesie would make it and he gavehim a lovely ride. He wants all of this seven furlongsand they all had a chance to beat him, but he keptgoing. He=s a lovely big horse who is not weak, but willgrow into himself and be one for next year. Althoughwe are not in a mad rush with him, I=d imagine the G1Racing Post Trophy [at Doncaster Oct. 27] is thelikeliest option. He is in the G1 Dewhurst S. [atNewmarket Oct. 13] and the G1 Prix Jean-LucLagardere [at Longchamp Oct. 7] and the Frenchpremiums are tempting in the latter, but the Racing PostTrophy is favorite at the moment. He=s a Guineas horseand a Derby horse.@

Tough and resolute, Libranno profited where his

favored stable companion Strong Suit (Rahy) failed with

a typically game display here. Having annexed the G2

July S. at Newmarket and Goodwood=s G2 Richmond S.

over six furlongs as a juvenile, he proved more than just

a precocious type when adding the following season=s

G3 Supreme S. back at Goodwood in August and the

G3 Criterion S. also at Newmarket over seven furlongs.

After his score in the Listed Cathedral S. over six at

Salisbury June 17, the homebred returned to the

Criterion to land a second consecutive renewal before

losing out only to Chachamaidee (Ire)

(Footstepsinthesand {GB}) over the same trip in the G2

Lennox S. at Goodwood July 31. Last of nine in the G2

Hungerford S. at Newbury last time Aug. 18, the bay

bounced back here despite over-racing behind the early

pace and as soon as he hit the front with a furlong

remaining was never going to let Pastoral Player past.

AHe did it well and is a very good horse when he=s on

song,@ Richard Hannon Jr. commented. AI am a bit

disappointed with Strong Suit, as he was on and off the

this was a race he could win. But take nothing away

GIRL ON A MISSION Today=s C$500,000 GI Northern Dancer S. at 12furlongs on the sweeping Woodbine course features theusual array of hardened campaigners such as defendingchampion Wigmore Hall (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and10-year-old Musketier (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), but themost intriguiging entrant is Irish Mission (Giant=sCauseway). MOULIN MALAISE With Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) staying at home andlast year=s winner Excelebration (Ire) (Exceed and Excel{Aus}) a late withdrawal, today=s G1 Prix du Moulin deLongchamp has lost much appeal with half of thequartet assembled being 3-year-olds without the form tofeature. Fortunately, there are two 4-year-olds who cansalvage the latest renewal and they are Farhh (GB)(Pivotal {GB}) and Moonlight Cloud (GB) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}). Both have run into the two currentstandard-bearers of modern flat racing in Frankel (GB)(Galileo {Ire}) and Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}),respectively, and have proven their versatility overdifferent distances at the top level. Success for Farhhhere would be just reward for finishing runner-up oneach of his last three starts, behind Nathaniel (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) in the July 7 G1 Eclipse S. at Sandownand Frankel in the G1 Sussex S. at Goowood Aug. 1and the G1 Juddmonte International at York threeweeks later. He may have finished closer than his thirdplacing in the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. had he not beenstopped in his run at a crucial stage at Royal AscotJune 20, and he seems to have overcome his earlierstalls issues. AFarhh is doing well and is ready to go,@trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented. AHe has run wellbehind Frankel on his two latest starts and it would begreat to win a big race with him. ‘OVA AND ‘OVA AGAIN Alain and Gerard Wertheimer=s Galikova (Fr) (Galileo{Ire}) has had her entire campaign planned around asecond tilt at the Oct. 7 G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe,in which she finished a disappointing ninth last year, and she faces opposition of the highest caliber, defending her crown, in a stellar renewal of today=s G1 Prix Vermeille at Longchamp. AIt has taken her a while tocome to hand so, to wake her up, I took her toCompiegne for a racecourse gallop,@ explained trainerFreddy Head. AFollowing a decent test in the Grand Prixde Saint-Cloud, she ran better in the Prix Jean Romanetwon by the champion Snow Fairy, and I=m hopeful she'llcontinue to progress in the same manner.@ Alain deRoyer-Dupre has claimed an unequalled six renewals ofthis distaffers= test, and is represented by last year=sthird Shareta (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and Sagawara (GB)(Shamardal) this time. Shareta beat all bar Danedream(Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) in last year=s Arc and, a closeseventh in November=s G1 Japan Cup apart, she has hitthe board in all starts since. Runner-up ahead ofGalikova in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in herpenultimate out, she comes here off a determined scorefrom The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the Aug. 23 G1 Yorkshire Oaks. Stablemate Sagawara hit theheights when garnering Longchamp=s May 27 G1 PrixSaint-Alary and has since finished eighth in the June 17G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly, and fourth in the July 29G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville. AHe had a lot of quality--oozedclass. He=s a horse that has a stallion=s pedigree behindhim. As far as I was concerned, he really was a smoothEmpire Maker. In my mind, he was a very specialhorse.@ Offspring by the expatriated Empire Maker continueto be in high demand in the ring at KeenelandSeptember this week, led by Thursday=s $1.1-millionsession topper. Three others have brought more than ahalf million a piece. AHe measured up with all of the top Empire Makersthat were in this week,@ said Ryan, who also purchasedan Empire Maker filly (hip 881) for $190,000 Thursday.AI=ve tried on two or three of his others--I wasunderbidder on one the other day that made $625,000(hip 847). He=s a terrific sire and it=s a huge loss to theU.S. breeding industry. I don=t think there=s going to beany more like this guy or the one that sold Thursday for$1.1 million. He was a very special horse. He=s atremendous sire.@

Was Ryan expecting to pay as much as he did foryesterday=s standout? AI told my client that we=d have to swing for thefence,@ Ryan replied. AI thought he was worthsomewhere in the $450,000 to $550,000 range and Iwas pretty close. The market is very selective, but man, there=s a lot of money here for the right horses. Theelectricity in here still is quite remarkable. There=s atremendous appetite for good horses. I think there=s alot of people still wanting to buy that haven=t boughtyet.@ Ryan concluded, AI think it=s a fantastic sale, but it isdiscriminating. If you don=t have what they want, it=snot an easy road.@ -Steve Sherack

Lighting It Up at KEESEP... Since its inception in 2000, Jack and Laurie Wolf=sand Donald and Barbara Lucarelli=s Starlight Racing has

consistently campaignedSaturday horses without chasingafter the toppers at the yearlingsales. Three-time Grade I winner andpromising young sire Harlan=sHoliday (Harlan) was a $97,000FTKJUL yearling. The brilliantchampion Ashado (SaintBallado), a $170,000 KEESEPyearling, carried Starlight=s blue-and-yellow silks to memorablevictories in the GI Breeders' Cup

Distaff and GI Kentucky Oaks. She later resold for astaggering $9 million as a broodmare prospect at the2005 KEENOV sale. Purge (Pulpit), hero of the 2005 GIHill >n= Dale Cigar Mile H., was purchased for $180,000as a KEESEP yearling. MGISW Take the Points (Even theScore), a $160,000 FTKJUL yearling, earned just underseven figures. Monba (Maria=s Mon), hero of the 2008GI Blue Grass S., was a $200,000 FTSAUG yearling. Starlight=s current stable stars were purchased in thatprice range as well. The unbeaten Shanghai Bobby(Harlan=s Holiday), a sparkling winner of the prestigiousGII Three Chimneys Hopeful S. at Saratoga earlier thismonth, was a $105,000 KEESEP yearling graduate. Heis being aimed at Belmont=s GI Champagne S. Oct. 6.The undefeated sophomore Algorithms (Bernardini), a$170,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, handed champion

Hansen (Tapit) a five-length defeat in the GIIIHoly Bull S. in lateJanuary before beingsidelined with a splintissue. The well-bred half-brother to three gradedstakes winners, includingformer Starlightcolorbearer Keyed Entry(Honour and Glory), isback in training, currently galloping atBelmont Park for trainer

Todd Pletcher. With Frankie Brothers handling bloodstock agentduties, Starlight Racing has made its presence feltthroughout the opening week of the KeenelandSeptember Sale, purchasing seven yearlings for a totalof $1,365,000, good for an average of $195,000. AFor our program, we reached on two horses so farthis year--a Giant=s Causeway colt [for $375,000] atFasig August and this one here,@ said Wolf, adding thatStarlight also acquired hip 26, a son of Tiznow--Stopthe Lights from the Taylor Made draft that RNA=d for$230,000. AThey=re both sort of the same--the physicalswere fantastic. Obviously we like Harlan=s Holiday. Ialso had a mare that raced against the second dam=sfamily, but that=s not why we got him. He fit Frankie=scriteria and the pedigree was in good order. Mike Ryanwanted him, too. He was the underbidder.@ Wolf=s operation has also purchased hip 23, a DixieUnion--Silence Dogood filly for $125,000; hip 458, aCongrats--Weight No More colt for $150,000; hip 480,a Lemon Drop Kid--Worthy Cat filly for $185,000; hip603, a More Than Ready--Catsuarina colt for $225,000;hip 618, a War Pass--Charmed Gift for $175,000; andhip 637, a Badge of Silver--Classy Date filly for$125,000. AIn all of the horses that we=ve bought [at the 2012yearling sales], I want to say that the average, evenafter those two, is just a little bit over $200,000,@ Wolfsaid. AWe ended up with seven colts and six fillies[overall this buying season]. When we start out, we=remore interested in the athleticism of the horse, the walkand conformation much more than anything else.@ With Starlight=s partnerships, investors get in on theentire crop of yearling purchases, rather than justpicking and choosing a select few. Wolf said that thisyear=s class of youngsters will be owned by a group ofnine. AWe do it for a few reasons,@ Wolf explained. AI thinkthe partner has a better shot of owning a piece of 12-14 horses rather than just having one or two. We foundit much better to do it this way.@ What keeps the retired hedge fund manager comingback to the well each year? AWith the partners that we have--we get along andhave fun together--and all of our family and friendsenjoying the experience, too, when the horse goes offwinning like Shanghai Bobby, I guess that=s why wekeep coming back,@ replied Wolf before adding with alaugh, AMaybe we=re just action freaks?@ -Steve Sherack

‘Secret’ Agent... Classic winner? Check. How about a Breeders= Cupwinner? You bet. Did you see that pair of unbeatenGrade I-winning juveniles in Southern California thissummer? Yes, those are his work as well. Enter Donato Lanni. The 43-year-old native of Montreal, Canada has beenresponsible for selecting all of the above at recentpublic auctions for various clientsof Hall of Fame conditioner BobBaffert. Lanni, who also serves as Hill>n= Dale=s Bloodstock ServicesDirector, found two-timechampion and 2010 GI PreaknessS. hero Lookin At Lucky (SmartStrike) ($475,000 2yo >09KEEAPR) for Karl Watson, MikePegram and Paul Weitman. Healso purchased Breeders' CupJuvenile Sprint hero Secret Circle(Eddington) ($165,000 2yo >11OBSMAR) on behalf of the aforementioned trio. ArnoldZetcher=s Rolling Fog (Posse) ($62,000 2yo >12OBSAPR) and Watson, Pegram and Weitman=sExecutiveprivilege (First Samurai) ($650,000 2yo >12OBSAPR), both winners at the highest level at therecently concluded Del Mar meeting, and Kaleem Shah=sGI Las Virgenes S. heroine Eden=s Moon (Malibu Moon)($390,000 2yo >11 FTMMAY) were selected by Lannias well. In addition to his bloodstock work for the Baffertstable, Lanni is also a key member of the buying teamfor the prominent Glen Hill Farm, the outfit behind thetalented MGSW & MGISP Marketing Mix (Medagliad=Oro) ($150,000 yrl >09 KEESEP), and the late MGSW& GISP Banned (Kitten=s Joy) ($130,000 yrl >09FTKOCT). AWhat I do is a very small part of an equation of whatis a complete team effort,@ Lanni stressed. AYes, buying

and selecting horses is myjob, but the owners have tostep up and spend themoney for the horses thatwe want to buy. I really hatesaying the word >I= whentalking about the horsebusiness. We all worktogether. You assemble ateam and everybody doestheir job. And if you do that

and get lucky, you might have some success in thebusiness.@ Lanni caught the horse bug at an early age from hisfamily, who raced Standardbreds in Canada. He beganworking as a groom at the tender age of 10, and hasn=twanted to do anything outside of racing since. Cont. p21

Donato Lanni cont.

Lanni packed up his car and made his move to theBluegrass in 1996, catching his first break at WalmacFarm. AI was at the track every summer and was always atthe farm, and it was pretty much all I ever wanted todo,@ Lanni commented. AI was introduced to racing at avery young age. When you grow up around horses, youeither gravitate toward it or run from it--it=s somethingthat=s innate. The Thoroughbred capital of the world isLexington, Kentucky, and that=s where I wanted to be.@ Lanni is quick to pay tribute to all that have helpedshow him the ropes along his journey. AJohn Sikura, Johnny Jones, Bob Baffert and TomProctor--those four guys have been my mentors,@ hesaid. AI=ve learned a lot from them.@ It=s been business as usual for Lanni throughout thefirst week of the Keeneland September Sale, assistingBaffert and Glen Hill with their purchases, while alsohandling his duties as seller with Hill >n= Dale. During theselect session, Lanni signed for hip 45, the $1.3-millionSmart Strike half-sister to Bodemeister (Empire Maker)on behalf of Sikura and Bruce Lunsford. Ferguson Buys Two… Past leading buyer John Ferguson, chief bloodstockagent for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, signed for just two horses for a total of $400,000through the first four sessions of the KeenelandSeptember Yearling sale. Ferguson doubled that total onSaturday with two purchases for $495,000. Ferguson, agent, purchased a Pivotal (GB) colt (hip 1199) out ofGrade I winner Vacare (Lear Fan) for $275,000 and aRaven=s Pass filly (hip 1359) out of Golden Sphinx(Storm Cat) for $220,000. Olly Tait, Darley=s chiefoperating officer, signed the ticket for the Pivotal colt.Tait said the colt would most likely race in Europe. AHe=s a very athletic colt, with a lovely shape to him,@Tait said. AHe=s out of a lovely mare and bred by a goodbreeder. [Ferguson] was very keen to get him.@ The Pivotal colt is the second foal out of Vacare (LearFan), who travelled to England to be bred to Pivotaltwice. Co-breeder Helen Alexander was involved in thepartnership, headed by Jon and Sarah Kelly, that boughtVacare for $2.8 million at the 2006 Fasig-TiptonKentucky November mixed sale. Three-year-old Vacarehad won the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. atKeeneland a few weeks before the sale and wasundefeated in four starts.

Vacare made 10 starts for her new owners, winningthe Magna Distaff and a trio of Grade II grass races.Vacare retired with eight wins from 14 starts, andearnings of $1,269,086. AWe bought her in training, and we had a lot of funwith her on the track,@ said Alexander, who describedherself as a minority owner. AAfter Vacare retired, wesent her to England and bred her to Pivotal. Wethought, as long as we were going to send her toEngland, we=d breed her to Pivotal twice. Her first foal,a Pivotal filly, foaled over there, and this colt foaledover here.@ The Pivotal colt was raised at Groves= MiddlebrookFarm in Lexington. Gainesway consigned the yearling. AHe was kind of an unimpressive foal, but he=s growninto a nice colt,@ Alexander said. AHe was always a goodmover and well-balanced. He just wasn=t one thatjumped out at me as a foal. But this year, starting inMay, he started to come the right way.@ The Raven=s Pass filly was bred in Kentucky by IronCounty Farms and was consigned by Hartwell Farm. She is a half-sister to stakes placed winner High Quality(Elusive Quality). -Pete Denk

War Front Colt Brings Profit to Campion… Ted Campion believed that the War Front colt hebought for $72,000 at Keeneland November would be alate bloomer. He was proven correct on Saturday whenthe May 28 foal sold for $250,000 to Richard Imbert=sWindmill Manor Farm of Bay Shore, New York. A native of Ireland, Campion owns Dundrum Farm inLexington. Hunter Valley Farm, agent, consigned thecolt as hip 1049. He was the first horse through thering Saturday. AWe knew there were going to be a bunch of goodWar Fronts this year in Book 2, so we wanted to benear the top in Book 3. We always try to place themwhere we=ll be in the top 25% of the day,@ said HunterValley=s Adrian Regan. AAt the time of entry, he was stillimmature looking compared with the horses we wereconsidering for book two. But from prep on, he=s justbeen unreal. We thought he was a superstar of a horse.[Saturday morning], I never saw so much scoping insidean hour before a sale ever. He had 12 scopes.@ When Campion purchased the War Front weanling, under the moniker Dingo Bloodstock, the colt, Aneeded alot of improvement, typical of his foaling date,@ Regansaid. AThat=s where Ted comes in. Ted is excellent atseeing potential,@ Regan said. ATed was adamant thatthis horse would do the job. Ted is very good. Hecomes from a family of horsemen back home. His fatherwas an excellent horseman.@ The colt is out of the unraced 15-year-old SeptiemeCiel mare North Patterson, and was bred in Kentucky byAllan G. AWe love the family first of all, and we love this filly. She=s a fantastic looking filly in our eyes,@ Glass said.A(Flashback) is in training with Bob Baffert in California, and we absolutely love him. The family is getting better, and we think it=s a family that=s going to take off. Shefit right in. We were looking for five or six fillies in thissale, and we got four now. We loved everything aboutthis one, so we had to try and buy her.@ The Tapit filly was bred by Gainesway Thoroughbredsand Michael Hernon. AShe is a really good filly that started to blossom herein the last 60 days,@ Gainesway=s Hernon said. AShe hadvery strong interest across the board. She wasconservatively reserved, and we were delighted withthe price. She=ll get every chance and I=ll be looking forher in top company probably on the West Coast.@ Gainesway stallion Tapit accounted for four of the topseven prices on the day. West Point Thoroughbreds andSt. Elias bought hip 1340, a Tapit colt out of stakes-placed Free the Magic (Cryptoclearance), for $310,000.Gainesway bred and consigned, as agent. ATapit has had eight individual Grade I winners and

they=ve all come from fairly modest crops at a lower

yearlings are the result of a $50,000 stud fee year, and

last year he bred absolutely amazing mares. One thing I

ahead of him.@ -PD

Big Day For Gainesway Continues… Gainesway also consigned the second and thirdhighest priced yearlings of the day. Live Oak Plantationwent to $385,000 for a Birdstone colt out of GrandPortege (Grand Slam). The colt=s second dam is Oatsee(Unbridled), dam of multiple Grade I winner Shackleford,Grade I winner Lady Joanne, and Grade III winnerBaghdaria. Gainesway bred and consigned the Birdstonecolt, offered as hip 1367. AHe was an extremely well balanced, athletic horsewho moved like a dream, and he was mentally verysound,@ Beck said. Gainesway purchased Grand Portege for $105,000from the Bentley Smith dispersal at the 2009 KeenelandNovember sale. AI was delighted to breed a really talented, fast racemare like Grand Portege to Birdstone,@ Beck added.AThis was a filly that I particularly liked. She had atremendous amount of talent on the racetrack, and sheshould have been a stakes winner. After Birdstone hadthat phenomenal first crop, he was bred to a bunch ofreally top class mares. We bred some of our othermares to him besides Grand Portege, including onecalled Clifton Bay, who had a yearling sell for $150,000today. We like to support stallions who stand at ourfarm.@ Gainesway sold Grand Portege, in foal to Tapit, for$300,000 at the 2012 Keeneland January sale. XavierInternational Bloodstock was the buyer. AIt appeared therewas a very small gap in the turf rail on the far turn,@said stewards Joe Lindeman, Steve Morgan and PeteKosiba Jr. said in a statement. AA horse brushed the railat that exact spot that caused several sections of therail to come apart, landing on the course. Severalhorses either had to jump or otherwise try to avoid therail and as a result we had to declare the race a nocontest.@ Miss Lucky Sevens (Big Brown) finished therace in first and would have become the seventhwinner for her freshman sire (by Boundary). All win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, superfecta and DailyDouble bets that started with the ninth race wererefunded. All other multi-race wagers involving theninth race became an Aall@ for that race. Click for theVideo, sponsored by Taylor Made Sales.
