A HUMANIST’S GUIDE TO SKEPTICISM
5 REASONS WHY HUMANISTS ARE SKEPTICS.
• A Lesson in Humanism in honor of
International Skeptics Day
• Prepared by Jennifer Hancock, Humanist
1) REALITY REALLY MATTERS
Skepticism helps you
learn what’s real and
what isn’t.
Simply put, you cannot
solve your problems if
you don’t know what
causes them!
2) SKEPTICISM LEADS TO
MORE EFFECTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
Supernatural solutions don’t work.
There, I’ve said it.
If you really want to solve your
problems, you need a real solution
and you are really going to have to
do some real work to get it done.
Skepticism helps ensure that your
chosen solution is at least reality
based.
And that’s a GOOD start!
3) SKEPTICISM ENSURES YOU DON’T GET
FOOLED BY CHARLATANS AND SHAMS
Taking the time to find out if a
proposed solution is reality based
may SEEM like a hassle, but …
think of all the time, money and
energy that you won’t be wasting on
things that won’t actually help you!
Oh – and in case you didn’t know,
rejecting reality can KILL you – see
http://whatstheharm.net/ for details
4) SKEPTICAL DOES NOT MEAN CYNICAL
Skepticism is a very optimistic
activity.
To be skeptical is to believe
that you have the ability to
figure things out and solve
your problems. It’s
EMPOWERING!
Want to make your dreams
come true? Be more skeptical!
5) SKEPTICISM CAN BENEFIT EVERY
ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE
Applied Skepticism
Some areas of human life that benefit from taking a skeptical approach.
Medicine
Marketing/media/commercials
Politics
Pseudoscience
Theological non-science
Interpersonal Relationships
Humanists are Skeptics because …
We refuse to just WISH for good things to happen.
We want to MAKE them happen!
