Dear Friends,

What a year! Fieldstone Farm saw growth and accomplishment in all areas in 2015! Student volumes were up 35 percent, donations increased, our annual fundraiser broke records, the endowment campaign surpassed all goals, our herd was healthier than ever and our volunteer base remained rock solid.

I am more proud of our team than I can say. And I am more grateful to each and every one of you than I can possibly express. YOU continue to make Fieldstone Farm extraordinary. The end result is that more participants find achievements with our incredible horses.

As I was teaching class the other day, I got to thinking about how my three young students endure so many therapies each week. The fact that they have the opportunity to ride is truly unique by comparison. In this particular lesson, as Miley picked up a cone and stretched to put it on a pole, she was following my directions and at the same time, she was accomplishing about 10 different goals in one simple activity. And because she takes those benefits home each week, her progress results in dramatic improvements in everyday life skills that also impact her parents and family members. The end result is a greater ability to focus, speak, walk, learn and so much more.

Thank you once again for making life-impacting opportunities like these possible and for helping our program to be the very best that we can be. Here’s to another fabulous year!

Confidence soars as students from CMSD learn to control a 1,200-pound animal.

“Coming to Fieldstone Farm has had such a positive impact on our students. Everyone is so patient and kind here. The tenderness they feel from the teachers gives them a sense of being important. And when on the horse, they feel in charge. This is an experience they will remember and carry with them for a long time,” says Carmen Woody, an intervention specialist at the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

Our horses touch people in ways humans cannot. One child who rarely smiles or participates got on a horse and after one lap around the ring, could not take the smile off of his face.

“Right now, he is the king of the world!” said Carmen smiling right along with him and acknowledging that she may not have seen that smile that day had it not been for the horses.

Our programs with inner-city kids continue to expand thanks to the generous support of our donors. This year our horses worked with more than 100 children from inner city schools helping them to build confidence and strength, as well as a belief in themselves.

We served a record-breaking 1,121 students in 2015.

Our horses are changing lives.

Seeing our students’ progress from week-to-week is inspiring, but the transformation from year-to-year is extraordinary. Students who come in on crutches learn to walk. Children who barely speak, begin to string together full sentences and ultimately, conversations. And people with little confidence begin to believe in themselves and have hope again.

Watching these successes is one of our greatest joys and it is what keeps our students coming each week. Nearly half of our students have been coming to the farm for more than 10 years, some have even participated for 30 years.

This longtime involvement goes beyond our students. Our volunteers on average have been here for six years, with 55 serving for more than a decade. And the majority of our staff have been working at the farm for more than 10 years; many for more than 20 years!

This commitment is what makes Fieldstone Farm such a special place.

Students at Gaitway High School thrive with individualized teaching.

“There is no doubt in my mind that without Gaitway and the people here, I would have been a high school drop-out,” says Sofia who is now on track to graduate on time with the hopes of pursuing a career with animals.

For Sofia, life has not been easy. She has Tourette Syndrome which causes her to tic inadvertently and she lives with a benign brain tumor that might have to be removed. Her family life is chaotic too, since her dad has been in a nursing home for 11 years. Living with all of this seems overwhelming, but it was the bullying in high school that she could not stand.

“She got to the point where she absolutely refused to go to school,” says her mom, Renee. What she loved was being with her service dog and riding horses.

Her mom was determined to find a school where her daughter could succeed. Gaitway’s small class size, supportive classmates and individualized learning environment in an experiential setting seemed tailor made for her. She now happily goes to school each day with her service dog, Cora, who has become Gaitway’s unofficial mascot.

“This is an amazing place for people like me. I love it. We are all different but everyone accepts each other,” says Sofia.

Gaitway was the first school of its kind in the country. Since it began in 2005, more than 50 students have graduated.

Our volunteers come to give, but they stay because they receive so much more.

“Volunteering at Fieldstone Farm is one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done. I have had the opportunity to touch so many lives,” says Beth Navratil, who has been a volunteer for more than 10 years. “I walk in the barn, take a deep breath and smell the hay and horses and immediately feel grounded and happy.”

Beth started volunteering after her daughter left for college. She loved it so much that now she is at the barn three days each week, while working a full-time job. But getting here requires the support of her family and friends. Beth has macular dystrophy and cannot drive at night. Her family and friends take turns driving her to and from the farm.

Beth’s goal for each lesson is to make sure that every student is successful in some way. These victories help our students realize that they can accomplish so much more.

When asked about the students she works with, she gets a twinkle in her eye, and says, “I am so proud of them. It is amazing how far they all have come.”

Beth is among the 250 volunteers who come to the farm each week to make our programs possible. In 2015, our volunteers donated more than 20,000 hours equating to nearly half of a million dollars in service. It is only through their dedication and enthusiasm for our program that we are able to touch the lives of more than 1,000 students each year.
