The Priesthood In the Patriarchal Days

Historical Footnote: In the patriarchal days the head of the family was also its local priest ministering for the family, before the Lord. Thus the father was supposed to represent the great High Priest before the family in the days of the Israelites and were a type of the gospel and of salvation through the Messiah, the priesthood was confined to a special tribe, the tribe of Levi. The priesthood was divided into two special divisions, one the high priest and secondly the common priest. The high priest was to be God’s personal representative on the earth, a special type of Christ pointing forward to the time when the Melchizadec priesthood would be established with Christ as our High Priest.

The Special Rights Given To the First Born Son

Note: Deuteronomy 21:17 “But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.” God gave His first born for the redemption of the world. This was given as a remembrance of the promise made to mankind of what He desired mankind to be, thus expressing His love towards fallen race. The inheritance of the first-born was a double portion which was the priesthood and the first-born of the line of descent from Isaac, this honor being the progenitor of the Messiah.

Did Cain Receive the First-Born Birthright As His Inheritance?

Footnote: Genesis 4:7 And God warned Cain, “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” But if Cain should cherish hatred in his heart towards his brother the First-Born birthright would be given to another. (See Deuteronomy 21:18-21)

What Individual Took Cain’s Place as the First-born?

Footnote: Luke 3:38 “Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.” We understand it was Adam’s son Seth which took Cain’s position as the First-Born, receiving his double portion of the inheritance. This was the seed stock which our Saviour came into this world through.

Esau the first born sold his Birthright to his brother Jacob as is written in Genesis 25:32,33

. Reuben defiled his Father’s bed and Joseph received the double portion of the Birthright (Genesis 49:22-25)

Num 3:12 “And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;”

Note: And the Levitical priesthood continued for many years always pointing forward to the time when the True Lamb of God would come and “take away the sin of the world” thus establishing the Melchizadec priesthood.

The Death of the Testator is Now At Hand

Hebrews 9:16,17 “For where a testament ( contract, devisory will, covenant) Is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.Note: Where there is no blood shed there is no atonement made. A brief statement of the contents of the New Testament; His law will be written within the heart, by faith mankind will be returned back into the image and likeness of God.

Looking At the First Covenant; “Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.”

Hebrews 10:4. “…it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”

Note: There is no atonement made without the shedding of blood, but the shedding of the blood of animals makes no atonement. It only pointed forward to the shed blood of the Son of God.

Exodus 40:15. “And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. “

Matthew 26:26-28 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Is There Royal Priesthood Today?

Peter says there is: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

Remember God said there was when He spoke to Moses “And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. “
