WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS?
Each year, one in five people suffer from emotional problems which are significant enough to seek professional help. This increases to an approximate 45% chance of experiencing an illness over our lifetime. Symptoms can range from mild feelings of depression and anxiety to severe distress and dysfunction which can threaten life itself.
Mental health problems are common but they are also treatable, and we know that getting help early can significantly improve chances of recovery and get you back on track sooner. Yet help seeking for mental health problems is much lower in rural areas than in the city.
We can do things to stay mentally healthy which means we are better able to manage life’s ups and downs, and have a better chance of bouncing back from tough times.
The chart on the opposite page can help you to check in and see how you are travelling, and what kind of support you may access.

CIRCLES OF CONTROL, INFLUENCE & CONCERN
(Stephen Covey, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, 1992)
We have a limited amount of energy available, and it is best
directed towards the things we have control over. Thinking
about how much control, influence or concern we have over
various aspects of our life or business is important, as we can
reflect on how much energy and effort we are directing to
these issues, and what we can impact.
Concern These are the aspects of our life that we often have
very little control over or influence in changing but can impact
us. These include the weather, politics, media, economy,
actions or opinions of others and so on.
Influence These are the things in our community which you
may be able to influence, but are less in control of. They may
include the people in your life, family, neighbours, colleagues,
how you spend your time, your level of knowledge or skills,
and so on.
Control These are the things we make choices about and
have direct control over such as what you read, say, do,
attitude, diet, exercise, rest, people you choose you associate
with and so on.
99
If we are focussing on our circle of concern too much, we
are often reactive in our decision making and actions. Being
proactive means working to focus our attention to what we
can influence and control whilst decreasing the energy spent
on our circle of concern.
List some things in each circle which are relevant to you.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
General PractitionersYour GP is a good place to start. They can do a physical assessment to make sure there isn’t something else going on and discuss mental health concerns with you. If you don’t have a regular GP you can ask at the local practice for a GP who is experienced in mental health, or visit www.healthdirect.gov.au for information on GPs in your local area.
It can be helpful to request a longer appointment with the GP if it is the first time you have talked about your mental health. It’s also important that you are honest, and take a list of symptoms to the appointment so the GP has the best chance of providing correct treatment or support.
You can discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan with your GP, which can include a referral to another provider such as a Psychologist or Social Worker. This will mean you may be able to access up to ten Government funded sessions per year. Some professionals do charge an additional fee so there may be a gap payment required. If you’re concerned about this it can be helpful to ask your GP to recommend someone.
Make sure you book a follow-up appointment with your GP for a few weeks later to discuss any further questions or concerns. It’s particularly important to let your GP know if you feel like treatments aren’t working or are having any side effects from medication.
