1.OverviewTheDepartmentofMathematicalSciencesoffersgraduateprogramsofstudyinmathematicsandatmosphericscienceswithspecializationsinthefieldsofalgebra,analysis,topology,appliedmathematics,probability,statistics,actuarialscience,atmosphericscience,andindustrialmathematics.Theprogramsofstudyatthemaster’slevelaredesignedtosuitboththestudentintendingtocontinuetowardaPh.D.aswellasthestudentwhowishestobeginaprofessionalcareeruponcompletionofthemaster’sprogram.ThestudentinthePh.D.programmayprepareforacareerinteachingatthecollegelevelandforacareerinresearchintheacademic,industrial,government,orbusinesscommunities.

4.GeneralPolicies&Regulations

UWMGraduateSchoolAcademicPoliciesandProcedures

4.1GPARequirement

UWMrequiresaminimumofcumulative3.0GPA(4.0basis)inallworktakentowardthedegree.Thestudentwillreceiveanacademicwarningifthesemestergradepointaveragefallsbelow3.0.Thestudentwillreceivea“GraduateDean’sOKRequiredtoContinue”ifthecumulativegradepointaveragefallsbelow3.0.Ifthe

semesterGPAandcumulativeGPAarebothbelow3.0,theGraduateDean’sOKwilltakeprecedenceoveranAcademicWarning.ThestudentwillbepreventedfromfurtherregistrationunlessthestudentpetitionstheGraduateSchoolandreceivesapositiverecommendationfromthestudent’sgraduateprogramunit.

4.2CreditRequirement

Graduatestudentsenrolledforaminimumof8creditspersemesteror6creditsduringasummersessionareconsideredfulltime,withtheexceptionsdescribedbelow.Fellowshiprecipientsaresubjectedtodifferentfellowshiprequirementsdependingonthefellowships;refertotheawarddescriptionsofthefellowships.TeachingandResearchAssistants(TAsandRAs)whoareemployedforone-third(33%)timeormoremustenrollforaminimumof6creditspersemester.Theyareconsideredfull-timewiththisminimumenrollment.

Inaddition,theDepartmentofMathematicalSciencesrequiresitsgraduatestudentswhoareemployedfor33%timeormoreasTAsorRAstocompleteaminimumof15creditsofgraduatecoursesofferedbytheDepartmentofMathematicalSciencesperacademicyear.

4.3TransferCredit

Master’s:Themaximumnumberoftransfercreditsallowableisthehigherof(a)12semestercreditsor(b)40%ofthetotalnumberofcreditsrequiredforgraduation.Toqualify,theworkmustmeetthefollowingcriteria:

• Graduatelevel,fromanaccreditedinstitution.• TakenwithinfiveyearsofadmissiontoyourUWMdegreeprogram.• Nothavebeenusedtomeetpreviousdegreerequirements.• GradeofBorbetter(B-isnotacceptable). • ApprovedbytheAssociateChairfortheGraduateProgram.

Totransfercredits,thestudentmustfirstdiscussthetransferabilityofthecreditswiththeAssociateChairfortheGraduateProgram,andthensubmitaGraduateTransferCreditEvaluationFormtotheGraduateSchoolforprocessing.

Ph.D.:IfyouearnedaMasterdegreebeforeenrollinginthePh.D.programinourDepartment,youmayqualifyforanautomatic27credittransfer.ContacttheAssociateChairfortheGraduateProgramformoreinformation.

4.4ChangeProgramofStudy

Tochangetheprogramofstudy,suchaschangefromanM.S.programinPhysicstoanM.S.programinMathematics,thestudentneedstoformallyapplyforadmission

tothegraduateprogramintowhichthestudentwishestochange.ThereisnotransferbetweenprogramsatUWM.WithintheDepartmentofMathematicalSciences,therearethree(3)distinguishedgraduateprogramsattheM.S.level:ActuarialScience,AtmosphericSciences,andMathematicalSciences.ThoughallgraduatestudentsintheseprogramsarestudentsintheDepartmentofMathematicalSciences,inordertochangetheprogramofstudyamongtheseprograms,astudentmustapplyforadmissiontotheprogramintowhichthestudentwishestochange.However,thisdoesnotapplytochangetheoptionsofstudywithintheMathematicalSciencesgroupofoptions(StandardMathematics,IndustrialMathematics,Statistics,FoundationsofAdvancedStudies,andDualMaster’sDegree),asstudentscanchange(orselect)theiroption(s)withoutfurtherapplication.However,anoptionshouldbedecidedearlysothestudentcanfollowtherequirementstocompletethedegreewithinthetimelimits.SeeMaster’sRequirementandMaximumNumberofYearsofSupportforfurtherinformation.TherearetwograduateprogramsatthePh.D.level:AtmosphericSciencesandMathematicalSciences.AchangeoffieldofstudywithinMathematicalSciencesdoesnotrequireaformalapplicationbutneedstobeapprovedbythestudent’sPh.D.advisor.SeeUWMGraduateSchoolAcademicPoliciesandProceduresforfurtherinformation.4.5PromotionfromM.S.toPh.D.AnM.S.studentwhowishestopursueaPh.D.degree(inthesameoradifferentprogram)needstoapplyforadmissiontothePh.D.programwithoutpayingtheapplicationfee.ThestudentsubmitstheapplicationinthesemesterthestudentexpectstocompletetheM.S.degree,andtheDepartmentalAdmissionCommitteemakesthedecisiononwhetherornotanadmissionisgranted.AnM.S.studentwhoispromotedtothePh.D.programmustbeconferredtheM.S.degree(thedegreeconferreddateisshownonthestudent’stranscriptinPAWS)beforeofficiallybecomesaPh.D.student.4.6DismissalandAppealofDismissal

StudentswhoarenotmakingsatisfactoryprogresstowardsfulfillingtherequirementsforaMaster'sorPh.D.degreearesubjecttodismissalfromtheprogram.TheAssociateChairfortheGraduateProgramandtheGraduateCommitteemakethisdecisionandheartheappeals.

5.FinancialSupport

FinancialsupportsintheformofFellowships,TeachingAssistantships,andResearchAssistantshipsareawardedonacompetitivebasis.Allapplicantstothe

programareautomaticallyconsideredforeachofthesetypesofawards.Awardsarerenewableforstudentsmakingsatisfactoryprogressintheirdegreeprograms.Inatypicalyear,20-30oftheseawardsaregiventonewstudentsenteringtheprogram.Inaddition,studentsmayapplyforotherformsoffinancialaidsuchasloansbycontactingtheDepartmentofFinancialAidorathirdparty.

5.1AssistantshipandFellowship

• GraduateTeachingAssistants:MoststudentsaresupportedasTeachingAssistants(TAs).Thesehalf-timeteachingpositionsincludearemissionofalltuitionandtheopportunityforhealthinsurancecoverage.TheTAstipendforthe2017-2018academicyearrangedfrom$12,850to$16,595dependingonthedegreeprogramandprogresstowardthedegree.

• Research/ProjectAssistantships:Somefacultymembershavesupportforresearchassistants(RA)orprojectassistants(PA)aspartoftheirresearchfunding.Thesepositionspayasemester,academicyear,orfull-yearstipend,haveremissionoftuition,andofferhealthinsurance.Thedutiesofthepositionsaredeterminedbythefacultymembers.Thesefacultymembersselectwhotheywantfortheirpositionsfromamongcurrentstudentsandadmittedapplicants.Thereisnoseparateapplicationforthesepositions.

• GraduateSchoolFellowships:StudentwithexcellentrecordsmayapplyforaGraduateSchoolFellowship.TheUWMGraduateSchoolcurrentlyofferstwofellowshipsforfull-timestudy:TheDistinguishedGraduateStudentFellowship,whichisfornewandcontinuingUWMgraduatestudents;andtheDistinguishedDissertationFellowship,whichisforcurrentUWMPh.D.studentswhohaveeitherachieveddissertatorstatusorwillachievedissertatorstatusduringtheawardyear.Thesefellowshipspaya9-monthstipend,remitalltuition,offerhealthinsurance,provideamodesttravelstipend,anddonotrequireanyteachingduringtheyear.Thefellowshipsarenotrenewable.ApplicationdeadlineisJanuary15eachyear.Formoreinformation,visit

• AdvancedOpportunityProgram(AOP)Fellowships:Thesefellowshipsareavailabletoqualifiednewandcontinuinggraduatestudentswhoaremembersofgroupsunderrepresentedingraduatestudy,studentswithdisabilities,and/orstudentswhoarefirst-generationcollegegraduateswithdemonstratedfinancialneed.ThisfellowshipisrenewableforuptotwoyearsforM.S.andthreeyearsforPh.D.students.Moreinformationisavailableattheprogramwebsite.ApplicationdeadlineisJanuary15eachyear.

5.2Awards

TheDepartmentusestheChancellor’sGraduateStudentAwardandtheResearchExcellenceAwardassupplementstoothersupporttoformawholepackageoffinancialsupportforthestudent.Shouldthefinancialsupportofferchange,suchaschangingfromaTeachingAssistantshiptoaResearchAssistantship,thedepartmentmayalsochangetheseawardsinthenewfinancialsupportoffer.

• Chancellor’sGraduateStudentAward:Dependingonfundavailability,thedepartmentoffersChancellorGraduateStudentAward,rangingfrom$1,000to$6,000assupplementstothestudent’sothersupport.Theseawardsarerenewableforuptofive(5)years,dependingonsatisfactoryprogressbeingmadetowardthedegree.Noapplicationisnecessary;everyapplicantorcurrentgraduatestudentisautomaticallyconsideredfortheaward.

• ResearchExcellenceAward:TheResearchExcellenceAward(REA)programisdesignedtoincentivizegrowthofextramuralsupportforgraduatestudents.Thedepartmentoffersthisawardtohigh-quality,talentedgraduatestudents.Subjecttofundavailability,newapplicantsandcurrentgraduatestudentswithexcellentrecordsareofferedREAassupplementstotheirothersupport.Noapplicationisnecessary;everyapplicantorcurrentstudentisautomaticallyconsideredfortheaward.Preferencemaybegiventograduatestudentswhohavemadeexcellentprogressinresearch.

5.3TuitionRemission

Graduateassistantswhoholdappointmentsat33%offulltimeormoreareeligiblefortuitionremissionforthesemester(s)ofappointment.Coursescoveredbytheremissionmustberelevanttothestudent’sprogramofstudy.

Noteonfees:Paymentofsegregatedfeesorspecialcoursefeesaretheresponsibilityofthestudent.GraduateAssistantscanarrangeforthepaymentofthesefeesthroughpayrolldeduction.

5.4SummerSupport

Summersupport,usuallyintheformofTA,isavailableuponapplicationsanddependsontheavailableTApositions.TheDepartmentmayuseotherfundsinadditiontoTApositionstoprovidesummersupportsforthestudent.PreferenceisgiventoPh.D.students.TheDepartmentsendsoutsummersupportrequestformstoallcurrentstudentseachspringsemester.

TheAssociateChairfortheGraduateProgramandtheGraduateCommitteeoverseetheawardoffinancialsupportsforallgraduatestudents.

TheChairoftheDepartmentappointstheTAsupontherecommendationoftheGraduateCommittee.TheChairoftheDepartmentalsosupervisestheTAs.TheAssociateChairfortheGraduateProgram,withinputfromtheGraduateCommittee,allocatestheChancellor’sGraduateStudentAwardandtheResearchExcellenceAwardfunds,andisresponsiblefornominatinggraduatestudentsforGraduateSchoolFellowships.

FacultymemberswhohaveRAfundsintheirresearchgrantsselectandawardtheirRAs.

5.6MaximumNumberofYearsofSupport

Themaximumnumberofyearsofdepartmentalfinancialsupports(thetotalnumberofyearsofTA,RA,andotherfellowships)is:

• two(2)fortheM.S.student;and• seven(7)forthePh.D.student,regardlesswhetherthestudent’sinitialenrollmentisintheM.S.orthePh.D.program.

5.7Ph.D.MilestoneProgressRequirementforSupport

MakingsatisfactoryprogressinthedegreeprogramisanecessaryconditionforreceivingfinancialsupportfromtheDepartment.ThestudentinthePh.D.programisexpectedtoachievethefollowingmilestones(seePh.D.MilestoneProceduresinthisHandbookformoreinformation):

1. PassingthePh.D.PrelimExaminationby

• theendofthethirdacademicyearifthestudentwasadmittedintothePh.D.programdirectly;

• theendofthefourthacademicyear(includingtheyearsintheM.S.program)ifthestudentwasinitiallyadmittedintotheM.S.program.

2. Achievingdissertatorstatusbythebeginningofthesixthacademicyearfromtheinitialenrollment,regardlesswhetherthestudent’sinitialenrollmentisintheM.S.orthePh.D.program.

Usually,studentsinthePh.D.programcanachievethesemilestonesayearearlierthanthedeadlines.ItispossibleforawellpreparedPh.D.studentwhohasanM.S.degreefromanotherinstitutiontopasstheprelimafteroneyearofstudyinourprogram.

6.TeachingAssistantPolicies&Regulations

6.1GraduateSchool’sGraduateAssistantPoliciesandProcedures

Itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytoreadtheGraduateSchool’sGraduateAssistantPoliciesandProcedures.Thesepoliciesandproceduresareavailableat:

6.2EnglishProficiencyforInternationalTeachingAssistantsTheUWMInternationalTeachingAssistantAssessment(MITAA)isarequirementforsomeinternationalteachingassistantswhoarenon-nativeEnglishspeakersandwhowillbeassignedclassroomdutiesaspartofagraduateteachingassistantship.ADepartmentrepresentativemustbeavailabletoparticipateintheassessment.ThereisnochargefortheMITAA.NotallprospectiveinternationalteachingassistantsmusttaketheMITAA.Theassessmentgenerallyisnotrequiredifthestudenthasoneofthefollowingrecentstandardizedtestscores:

• 23orbetterontheSpeakingsectionoftheinternet-BasedTOEFL(iBT)• 7.0orbetterontheSpeakingsectionoftheIELTS

TheassessmentalsomightnotberequiredforstudentswhoaregraduatesofanAmericanuniversityorcollege.Formoreinformation,contacttheESLProgramsOffice.

6.3DepartmentalPolicies

UndergraduateteachingisoneoftheprimaryresponsibilitiesoftheDepartmentofMathematicalSciences;graduatestudentsplayanimportantroleinthisfunction.Asapartoftheirtraining,andasanecessaryconditionformostformsoffinancialaid,allteachingassistantsareinvolvedwithdepartmentalteachingactivitieseachsemestertheyareinresidence.

BalancingyourrolesasastudentandaTAcanbedifficult,andweareheretohelpyounavigateissueslikethese.PleasedonothesitatetocontactanymemberoftheDepartmentadministrationifyouhavequestions.

Inaddition,thedepartmentsendsoutemailsthatcontaininformationonclasspolicies,procedures,andimportantdates,etc.,toallinstructionalstuffmembersofthedepartmenteachsemester.Pleasereaditcarefullyandkeepacopyforyourreference.

Teachingtips:

1) Knowthesubjectmatterofyourlessonsverywell.Teachyourselfanythingthatisnew.

2) Visityourclassroombeforethesemesterstartstoknowitslocationandifithasablackboard(chalk)orwhiteboard(markers).

3) Getstudentstotalk,notjustraisehands,ondayone.Itishardtofixlateriftheydon’t.

4) Dressnicelyondayonetomakeacleardistinctionbetweenyouandyourstudents.Alwayspracticegoodhygiene(dailyshowers;teethbrushed;cleanclothes).

5) Alwayswriteonaboardstartingfromthefarleftsideratherthaninthemiddle.

6) Ifsomethingisimportant,writeitontheboard(e.g.,thenameofanewtopic).Ifyouspeakforawhileandwritenothingontheboard,nothingwillgoinstudent’snotes!

7) Lookatstudentsmorethantheblackboard.Remembertoturnaroundandfacetheclass.

9) Illustratenewideaswithexamples(wouldn’tyoulikeyourteacherstodothistoo?).

10) Workoutyourexamplesbeforeclassanddouble-checkyourcalculations.11) Conveyinterestandconfidenceinwhatyou’resaying!Ifitcomesacrossthat

you’reboredorconfusedaboutthelesson,yourstudentswillstoppayingattention.

12) Whenyouasktheclassifthereareanyquestions,wait(perhapscountto5slowlyinyourhead)beforemovingon.Timegoesslowerthanyouthinkatthefrontoftheroom.
