You’ve invested a lot of time and money in your back yard. You’ve built the deck, bought the patio furniture, landscaped and built a pool….. chilled the drinks and invited guests over… But the flying pests are forcing you indoors.

During the warmer months when we want to be enjoying our yards, biting female mosquitoes can often be around at the same time.

Mosquito populations are not only influenced by weather and rain patterns, but also the incidence of standing water – in ponds or buckets left in the backyard. Clogged gutters and even bird baths can offer mosquitoes a suitable space to breed. Consider too that you’ve remedied all of these in your own backyard, but finding similar solutions in all neighbouring yards, possibly the nearby golf course, creek or local park may simply not be feasible…..

FAct: BAckyArd pests Are A proBlem!

It’s therefore time to consider some options…

Bug zappers or insect trappers provide a simple, low running cost and effective means of ridding your entertainment space of unwanted flying pests. Whilst it’s understood there are many alternative options for fighting insects, these ultimately cost more in the long run, don’t offer wide coverage or are simply messy by nature….

Also consider that zappers or trappers are effective in progressively reducing the mosquito population in your backyard. For best effect, switch on the unit an hour or two before sunset. Leaving the unit on overnight may help reduce any surrounding mosquito populations.

If flies are a problem in your back yard, a bug zapper will only disappoint. Flies are most active during daylight and are attracted to the UV from sunlight.

An outdoor zapper is most effective at dawn or dusk. On the other hand, used indoors against flies, a zapper will prove effective if placed away from windows and other competing light sources.

Gecko lamps are specially designed to give off UV light at a wavelength of 365nm.Mosquitoes and other pests are attracted to the 365nm UV light.

As mosquitoes and other pests come into contact with the high voltage grid, they’re electrocuted.

Dead pests drop into the collection tray at the bottom.

For best results, place the unit away from your entertainment area and away from competing light sources. Hang at a height of around 2.5m.

Mosquitoes and other pests are attracted to the 365nm UV light as well as heat given off by the lamp and Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

The Trapper works using a process of Photocatalysis where a Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) coating inside the unit combines with UV light to produce Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This process is aided by any carbon matter left behind on the inner surfaces from bugs as they’ve been drawn into the unit by the fan.

Photocatalysis is similar to how iron conducts electricity. As long as there is no harsh scrubbing on the photocatalyst plastic surfaces inside the unit, the effect will last. No need for any replenishment.

This process also results in the production of hydrogen radicals that offers a level of air purification.

The Trapper’s powerful suction fan draws pests down into the catcher basket where they dehydrate and die.

For best results, place the unit away from your entertainment area and away from competing light sources. Hang at a height of approximately 2.5m.

Which model should Be right For me?

1. Start by considering the area you want to protect. Gecko makes it easy as the stated coverage is radius. So if you’re not sure, just stand in the centre of your entertaining space and measure the distance to its edge.

2. Is your entertaining space indoors or outdoors? That will determine if the model you need should be weather proof.

3. What’s your zapper placement preference – flat surface, hanging or wall mount?

4. Consider where your power source is. You can buy an inexpensive weatherproof power connection box. This will allow you to run an extension cord to your zapper and save considerable permanent power source installation costs.

5. Are flying pests in high numbers ? Don’t buy a big zapper unless the space you want to protect is large or bugs are in high numbers. Consider that a big zapper in a small space is simply inviting your neighbours’ bugs into your yard!

6. Are you put off by a cracking / zapping sound? Consider the near silent trapper.

7. Prefer a set and forget option? Consider one of the models with an auto on-off feature.

To ensure your zapper remains effective, it’s important to clean the unit on a regular basis. A clogged grid affects a unit’s ability to generate high voltage and will reduce it’s effectiveness.

Remove dead insects from the appliance on a regular basis with the brush supplied. Gently brush dead insects from the high voltage grid. NEVER use metal objects or stick fingers through the outer case. Gently shake dead insects from appliance and discard.

An Insect Trapper should have the basket emptied and cleaned regularly. Ensure no bugs are caught near the units fan. Regularly clean the outside of the appliance with a soft cloth and dry it with a dry towel. Do not immerse in water. Do not use harsh solvents to clean the plastic.

Regular maintenance of your zapper or trapper will keep it safe and ensure it works efficiently.

When not in use or before cleaning, always disconnect the appliance from the mains supply.

Always check that the appliance is in good working condition. Periodically inspect the power supply cord and plug.

Always ensure the outer case is kept clean and unobstructed. Failure to do so may result in overheating.

FreQuently Asked Questions

“WHY ARE MOSQUITOES ATTRACTED TO HUMANS?”Female mosquitoes require protein found in blood to produce eggs and most are not fussy about the source of the blood.  The receptors in mosquito antennae are very sensitive and mosquitoes use these to identify their prey. Prey is identified from any carbon dioxide, body odour, lactic acid, blood type as well as secretions.Carbon Dioxide is what we exhale. Our body odour is the result of bacteria on our skin that mixes with sweat. Lactic acid passes through our skin after eating certain foods or when we’ve been active. Mosquitoes are mostly attracted to blood type O and least attracted to blood type A.  We “advertise” our blood type by secreting compounds through our skin. “HOW DOES A GECKO BUG ZAPPER WORK?”The zapper lures insects with its ultra-violet light. Insects are electrocuted on contact with a high voltage grid surrounding the lamp. Dead insects will then drop into the in-built catcher tray. “THERE’S NO POWER SWITCH ON MY BUG ZAPPER”The unit is powered up as soon as it’s plugged in.  The UV light will light up when the unit is plugged in. “CAN A GECKO BUG ZAPPER BE LEFT OUTDOORS”Yes, depending on which model, the majority of Gecko models are weatherproof.  Ensure any power connections are weatherproof. “WHAT INSECTS ARE ATTRACTED?”Gecko Zappers are primarily designed to attract mosquitoes. Moths and other insects commonly attracted to light will also be drawn towards the zapper. “WILL FLIES BE ATTRACTED?”While flies are attracted to UV light, they are generally more active during the daytime. If operated indoors and away from windows and competing light sources, units will attract and kill flies. Used outdoors during the daytime, a zapper is less than ideal where flies are a problem. “WHEN SHOULD I SWITCH MY ZAPPER ON?”Mosquitoes are most active from dusk  and become less active again after sunrise. For best effect, switch on the unit an hour or two before sunset.  Leaving the unit on overnight may help reduce any surrounding mosquito populations. “WHAT GECKO MODEL IS BEST SUITED FOR ME?”The Gecko range includes models suited to virtually all situations.  To make product selection easy, we’ve devised a simple model selector here: http://geckoinsectkillers.com.au/model-selector/    “HOW LONG WILL THE UV LAMP LAST?”Gecko lamps should generally last around 5,000 hours. For optimum life, we recommend switching on your unit for at least 4 hours at a time.  Shorter durations or frequent switching on and off will shorten the lamp life. Other factors affecting lamp life include excessive heat or cold. “ARE REPLACEMENT LAMPS AVAILABLE?”Yes, Gecko lamps are readily available at Bunnings. The rating label on each zapper shows the model number of the replacement lamp.

FreQuently Asked Questions

“CAN THE LAMP BE REPLACED EASILY?”The majority of Gecko Zappers enable tool free lamp replacement. Detailed instructions are included in the instruction manual supplied in the pack.

“DO GECKO ZAPPERS CONSUME A LOT OF POWER AND ARE THEY EXPENSIVE TO RUN?” Power consumption starts at 4W and goes up to 50W, depending on the model. The 50W model costs less than a couple of cents per hour to run.  “DO GECKO ZAPPERS MAKE A LOT OF NOISE?”When bugs hit the high voltage grid, a cracking noise will be heard.  The noise level will generally depend on the size of the bug and also grid voltage of the zapper.  Gecko model LT50 will generally have a louder “crack” than model LT10.  If the cracking noise is an issue, consider the near silent Gecko Triple Lure Insect Trapper model IT560. “MY GECKO INSECT TRAPPER DOESN’T SEEM TO BE WORKING”Check the unit is plugged in and power is switched on. Ensure the unit’s power switch is also on. The power switch is located below the top cover and covered by a clear rubber dome.  If the fan doesn’t appear to be turning, switch off unit, remove catcher basket and ensure there are no large bugs caught near the fan blade.  The area around the fan should be cleaned regularly with the supplied brush. In the event the unit still won’t operate, call us on 1300 360 211. “I HAVE A GECKO INSECT TRAPPER – HOW LONG WILL THE TIO2 LAST?”Combined with UV light and organic matter left behind from bugs, the TiO2 acts as a catalyst to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) that helps attract mosquitoes to the insect trapper. The TiO2 will last indefinitely as it is a catalyst and is not consumed in the process. “I HAVE A CORDLESS RECHARGEABLE MODEL, HOW MANY TIMES CAN I RECHARGE THE BATTERY?”Model LT4 uses a sealed lead acid battery. Depending on environmental factors (especially temperature) the battery should continue to accept a charge up to 500 times. “I HAVE A CORDLESS RECHARGEABLE MODEL, WHAT DO THE COLOURED LEDS INDICATE?”When connected to the adaptor, the red LED indicates the unit is charging. The red LED will go off when the unit is fully charged. The green led simply shows the unit is on. “WHAT’S THE BEST POSITION FOR MY GECKO ZAPPER?”A zapper is best placed away from human activity and also competing light sources. Preferably out of windy location also.  Ideally, hang at a height of around 2.5 metres. “DOES MY GECKO UNIT REQUIRE MUCH MAINTENANCE?”Gecko zappers and trapper are designed to require minimal maintenance. Before commencing any maintenance, ensure units are disconnected from any power. Zapper catcher trays or the trapper basket should be emptied from time to time. It’s important to ensure Zapper high voltage grids are cleared of any larger “stuck” bugs, as these will affect the units performance.  “MY ZAPPER DOESN’T APPEAR TO BE ZAPPING, IT WAS WORKING LAST TIME I CHECKED, WHAT SHOULD I DO?”A grid that’s clogged with dead bugs or debris may result in reducing its ability to generate a high voltage. Switch off and unplug the unit and clean the metal grid and horizontal bands thoroughly with the supplied brush.

“WHAT STARTER IS SUITED FOR THE GECKO XTREME COMMERCIAL ZAPPER XDS115?”The Gecko Xtreme commercial model is supplied with a Philips brand S2 starter. Other 4W-65W brand starters including Osram or Crompton can also be used. “WHAT’S THE WARRANTY OF A GECKO PRODUCT?”Gecko products carry a 12 month warranty from date of purchase. Gecko Xtreme models carry a five year warranty. “I HAVE A MOSQUITO PLAGUE – WHAT CAN I DO?”Warm weather with intermittent rain will often lead to higher mosquito populations. Look around your yard to ensure there are no buckets, old tyres or other receptacles collecting water where mosquitoes can breed. Ensure any fruit trees are well away from the house. Ripening fruit gives off CO2, that attracts mosquitoes.

Also, consider supplementing your zapper or trapper with mosquito repelling plants;– Citronella or Horsemint: will repel mosquitoes. – Marigolds: Contain pyrethrum, a compound that’s used in many insect repellents.  – Catnip : Reported to be 10x more effective than DEET.  You can also use this in cooking. – Ageratum: Emits a smell that is offensive to mosquitoes.
