  7. 7. Types of Teeth - IncisorsIncisors (from the Latin wordincidere, meaning "to cut") are thefront teeth present in mostheterodont mammals. They arelocated in the premaxilla above andon the mandible below. Humanshave a total of eight (two on eachside, top and bottom). Opossumshave 18, whereas armadillos havenone.
  8. 8. Types of Teeth - CanineIn mammalian oral anatomy, thecanine teeth, also called cuspids, dogteeth, fangs, or (in the case of thoseof the upper jaw) eye teeth, arerelatively long, pointed teeth. However, they can appear moreflattened, causing them to resembleincisors and leading them to becalled incisiform.
  9. 9. Types of Teeth Pre-MolarThe premolar teeth, or bicuspids, aretransitional teeth located between thecanine and molar teeth. In humans, there are two premolars per quadrantin the permanent set of teeth, makingeight premolars total in the mouth. They have at least two cusps.Premolars can be considered as a'transitional tooth' during chewing, ormastication.
  10. 10. Types of Teeth - MolarThe molars or molar teeth are themost posterior and mostcomplicated kind of tooth in mostmammals. In many mammals theygrind food during chewing; hencethe Latin name mola, "millstone".Molars show a great deal ofdiversity in size and shape acrossmammal groups.
  11. 11. What is a Cavity ?
  12. 12. Oral HygieneOral hygiene is the practice of keeping themouth and teeth clean to prevent dentalproblems, most commonly, dental cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath. There are alsooral pathologic conditions in which goodoral hygiene is required for healing andregeneration of the oral tissues. Theseconditions included gingivitis, periodontitis, and dental trauma such as subluxation, oralcysts and following wisdom toothextraction.
  13. 13. Whitening TreatmentsWhitening treatments don't permanentlywhiten teeth. If you expose your teeth tofoods and beverages that cause stainingyou may see the whiteness start to fade inas little as 1 month after treatment. Those who avoid foods and beveragesthat stain may be able to wait one year orlonger before whitening treatment ortouch-up is needed.
  14. 14. What to do to keep your teeth white and clean ?1. Brush or rinse immediately after consuming stain-causing beverages or foods2. Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss atleast once daily to remove plaque. Use whitening toothpaste (once or twice a weekonly) to remove surface stains and prevent yellowing.3. Consider touch-up treatments. Depending on the whitening method used, you mayneed a touch-up every 6 months or after a year or two. If you drink lots of stain-causingbeverages, you may need a touch up more often.4. If you do choose to consume beverages that stain, consider using a straw so that theliquid bypasses your front teeth.5. Foods that are firm or crisp help to clean the teeth as theyre eaten. Apples are one ofthem and other choices include raw carrots, celery and (unsweetened) popcorn.6. Dont chew very hard foodstuffs such as hard candy or ice. Chewing hard food createstiny fractures in the enamel of your teeth that, combine to result in major cracks.7. Throw away your toothbrush or change the head of your electric toothbrush at leastevery two to three months. Otherwise, youre just transferring bacteria to your mouth.
  15. 15. What Not to do to keep your teeth White andClean ?1. Avoid the consumption of or exposure to products that stain your teeth, such ascoffee and tea.2. Sipping sugary drinks throughout the day is another bad habit as the constantexposure to sweet and acidic beverages can foster tooth decay.3. Dentists report that patients rely on their teeth for a number of odd jobs: to tearopen a bag of crisps, uncap a bottle of nail varnish, or rip a price tag off a piece ofclothing. You must avoid such things. This can be hard on your teeth, causing theedge of a weakened tooth to chip off or even break.4. Reduce the biting of your nail, which can also harm your teeth.5. Avoid crunching of ice cubes because the brittleness and cold temperature of icecubes can actually cause teeth to fracture.6. Some people also try to crack nuts such as walnuts or hazel nuts with their teeth, which can be equally hazardous to teeth.7. Minimise the contact of drinks with your teeth; if you want to drink the drinks youhave to use a straw but the straw must be positioned toward the back of the mouth, not resting against your teeth.
