Book Summary Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
By J. K. Rowling(Scholastic Inc., 1999)
Orphaned when he was only a baby, Harry Potter lives with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys. A dull,Muggle (non-wizard) family, the Dursleys live at Number Four Privet Drive in Little Whining, England.Harry was rescued after Voldemort, a dark and evil sorcerer, had killed his wizard parents. Althoughthe Dursleys are aware of Harry’s magical potential, they attempt to raise him to be “normal” like theirown precious son, Dudley. Showing little kindness, they make Harry live in a closet under the stairs. He wears only hand-me-down clothes and has never had even one birthday party. Harry’s big breakcomes on his 11th birthday when a giant named Rubeus Hagrid arrives to take him to Hogwarts, thebest wizard school in all of England.
From Hagrid, Harry learns that he is famous in the wizard world, having survived Voldemort’s power.Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley, a collection of wizard’s shops, to buy the required items for afirst–year student of wizardry. While on the train to Hogwarts, Harry meets Ron Weasley andHermione Granger, who soon become his best friends. He also encounters his future nemesis,Draco Malfoy. Once at Hogwarts the students are greeted by the great wizard and headmaster,Albus Dumbledore. They are then sorted into houses and the magic begins.
Harry and his friends attend classes in the many fine wizard arts. Feeling overwhelmed by their newstudies, they especially fear their potions teacher, Professor Snape. Besides being tormented by Draco Malfoy and Professor Snape, Harry encounters a mystery: he learns that Hagrid and HeadmasterDumbledore have hidden a secret package, and Harry fears Professor Snape may try to steal it.
The friends work to unravel the mystery of the package and learn of its connection to Voldemort.Making remarkable discoveries along the way, Harry and his friends thwart the sinister plot to steal thepackage. The book ends with Harry returning to the Dursleys for summer holiday, leaving the dooropen for the sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
