Welcome to East Durham CollegeApplying to college is a very exciting chapter in your son or daughter’s life and as a parent* you are bound to have lots of questions.

At East Durham College we recognise the important role you play in advising and supporting your son or daughter and to help we have produced this guide.

It summarises some of the key information that you will want to know about the college. We hope you find it useful through each stage of the process.

*Please note: we use the terms ‘parent’, ‘son’ and ‘daughter’ throughout this information for simplicity, but we do appreciate that many of you may be carers, legal guardians or step-parents. This information is aimed at anyone who fulfils a parenting role for a younger person who is considering joining East Durham College.

Applying to East Durham College:A step-by-step guide ApplyingYour son or daughter should apply for their chosen course as soon as they have decided what they want to do. Some courses fill up quickly, so we recommend they apply as soon as possible.

Apply onlineThis is the quickest method to get an application in to us! Your son or daughter just needs to fill in the simple online application form, and it will be automatically submitted to us. Log on to www.eastdurham.ac.uk/application-form or find the course page and click to apply from there.

Apply by phoneYour son or daughter can also call Student Services and complete their application with one of our team over the phone on 0191 518 8222.

Apply in personYou are welcome to pop in and see us at either the Peterlee or Houghall Campus and we will be happy to help your son or daughter complete their application.

What happens after application? After receiving your son or daughter’s application we will be in touch with them to offer them an interview with a teacher from you chosen course. It’s important they attend (you are welcome too) so we can ensure the course they have selected is the right choice based on their career aspirations.

Interviews can be offered over the phone and in certain local schools.

East Durham College | Houghall Campus | The Technical Academy | Peterlee Campus

The interview processThe interview is a great opportunity to visit the college and it also helps us to get to know your child’s career aspirations. This ensures that they are placed on the right course and the right level based on their GCSE grades/predicted grades.

Page 5: A guide for parents - East Durham College for Parents.pdf · Applying to college is a very exciting chapter in your son or daughter’s life and as a parent* you are bound to have

After interviewIf they are successful at interview we will send your son or daughter a letter to confirm their offer. Successful applicants usually have conditions on their place to be able to get into college; these can be a keen interest in the subject or in some cases the number, grades and/or subjects at GCSE. These conditions vary depending on the level of course they wish to be accepted on to.

It is important they accept their place as directed in the offer pack we will send them, so we can plan for the course numbers and they secure their place with us.

Sit tightAfter your son or daughter have been accepted onto a course it can be a long wait until they enrol with us. If they change their mind about the course they have chosen, don’t worry, they can contact us and we’ll get that sorted out.

Oh, and don’t forget to let us know if there is a change of address, email or telephone number.

The college also run February half term taster day events where we invite in everyone that has applied. Prospective students spend a fun day at college taking part in different activities to get a flavour of the sort of things they will do on their chosen course. This is also a great opportunity to meet other future EDC students.

We also run an A-level bridging day before the summer holidays.

EnrolmentWe will write to your son or daughter in the summer to let them know their enrolment date and time. This will be on or soon after GCSE results day.

There will also be a few forms in the pack for them to fill in too and post back to us before enrolment.

Study ProgrammesAll 16 to 18 year old students at East Durham College will have the opportunity to undertake high quality and challenging study programmes.

These are tailored to meet an individual student’s needs and career ambitions. They are designed specifically to enable progression into employment, apprenticeships or higher levels of study.

Study Programmes are also available to students aged 16 to 24 with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

Mix & MatchIt may be possible to study a mixed programme which combines both A-level and vocations courses.

Core Aim/Qualification A LevelsA-levels are traditional qualifications where students study multiple academic qualifications. Taking A-levels means your child will be studying a range of subjects, so they can keep their options open in terms of which career path they’d like to go down in the future. A-levels tend to be more like GCSEs as they are predominately exam-based, with more of a focus on theory than practical skills as is the case with a vocational programme.

A-levels are a good option for students who are unsure on what vocation to specialise in, but who have a desire and motivation to progress into higher education before entering the world of work.

Whilst many sixth forms are cutting back on the number of teaching hours on A-levels, our provision is committed to delivering five hours direct teaching time per subject per week. Homework and directed study is in addition to this valuable time in the classroom.

We are also committed to paying for our A-level students to sit AS exams at the end of year one. This is to help prepare our students for their final exams and will provide a valuable qualification in its own right.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and a new Level 3 maths qualification are also available to A-level students.

East Durham College | Houghall Campus | The Technical Academy | Peterlee Campus

Page 7: A guide for parents - East Durham College for Parents.pdf · Applying to college is a very exciting chapter in your son or daughter’s life and as a parent* you are bound to have

Core Aim/Qualification Vocational CoursesVocational courses are work-related qualifications that enable students to acquire the knowledge and practical skills to perform a particular job.

Vocational qualifications are designed to prepare your child for a particular career. There is usually more emphasis on coursework and ongoing assessments rather than exams; it’s often about learning practical skills that you can apply to the world of work.

However, your child can still go to university after studying on a vocational course. A triple distinction star grade is equivalent to three A* at A-level. Please see the table on page 15.

Core Aim/Qualification ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships combine paid employment with study.

If your child would like to enter the world of work and ‘earn while they learn’ then an apprenticeship might be the best route for them. Apprenticeships combine part-time study with a job, where they can learn specific technical skills and knowledge that the employer needs.

Most school leavers hoping to pursue an apprenticeship initially apply for a vocational course to secure a place on their preferred programme of study.

Students can only apply to an actual apprenticeship when an employer and a vacancy becomes available www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship, but it is possible to transfer from a vocational programme to an apprenticeship midway through the course, with students being able to continue their academic qualifications on a part-time basis at the college.

College study hours are usually dependent on the employer, however typically apprentices spend four days a week at work and one day a week studying at college. An assessor from the college will go out to your child’s place of work to complete additional training and assessments with them.

Study ProgrammesAs well as their Core Aim/Qualification, your son or daughter will also receive:

Maths & English TuitionStudents who start at any college and have not yet achieved a grade 9 - 4 in GCSE maths and/or English will continue to study these subjects at college, either at GCSE level or on a programme called functional skills.

As part of their study programme your son or daughter will have a dedicated maths and/or English lecturer. These lecturers will help them to develop the maths and English skills needed to be successful in the workplace relating to their chosen area of study.

TutorialDuring your son or daughter’s time at college they will have a dedicated Progression Coach (PC) who will work with them and their lecturers to ensure they have a positive experience at college.

Their PC will act as the link between home and college, helping them with any study or personal issues, whilst also liaising with their course tutors regarding academic progress. PCs review all aspects of a student’s study programme.

Work Skills & ExperienceAs part of all study programmes your son or daughter will also take part in meaningful and relevant work experience or work-related learning depending on their course level.

This will give them valuable experience of the work environment and develop their all-round employability skills - giving your son or daughter the best chance of finding a job or progressing on to further study.

Employer Partnerships East Durham College works with 100s local employers to help train our students for real working environments.

These organisations support us because they understand that students should be given educational opportunities that are grounded in industry-experiences and that this leads to more effective progression into the workplace or on to university.

Work experience provides a unique role in helping young people develop employability skills and this experience is highly valued by employers when they are assessing young people for employment.

Work experience is a key component of our study programmes and all students will undertake work experience or some form of work-related training as part of their study programme ‘non-qualification activity’ at East Durham College. This applies to both academic and vocational pathways.

Ofsted Report - Good East Durham College was inspected by Ofsted in January 2018 and was delighted to once again be graded as a GOOD college.

The inspectors’ judgement confirmed that ‘governors, senior leaders, managers and staff have sustained the good quality of education and training at the college that was seen at the previous inspection’ and praised the college, stating that it had ‘strengthened further the attention on improving the quality of teaching, learning and assessment.’

Suzanne Duncan, Principal and Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted with the outcome of our recent inspection and that the report has highlighted many of our strengths.

“We were extremely pleased that the report highlighted that we work particularly well with employers, the local enterprise partnership and other partners to ensure that our provision is responsive to local and regional priorities and demands; as a result, almost all of our learners progress to further study, higher education, apprenticeships or meaningful and sustainable employment.”

A very high proportion of learners go on to further study or gain employment on completion of their programmes.

Ofsted 2018.

Learners benefit from excellent practical resources at the college… the substantial investment in physical resources has a positive impact on enabling learners to gain the skills that employers value and need.

Ofsted 2018.

Well considered progression routes are in place at all levels and you provide a wide range of vocational and academic programmes that prepare learners well for their future, be it further learning or employment.

Ofsted 2018.

Changing MindsetsAt East Durham College we encourage every student to become more resilient, self-motivated and to set themselves high standards by using Growth Mindset strategies.

The methods that we use are based on the work of Professor Carol Dweck who has pioneered a self-motivating approach to learning and a positive way of thinking.

Some of the key features of a Growth Mindset are:

Embracing challenges Persistence in the face

of setbacks See effort as the path to

improvement Learning from mistakes

and criticism Find lessons and inspiration

in the success of others

As a result, your son or daughter will achieve beyond what they thought they were capable of when they study at East Durham College!

CompetitionsMany schools have, in recent years, moved their emphasis for children away from winning and losing to simply taking part.

At East Durham College we believe this is detrimental both to the individual and to the wider community, since competition motivates ambition and increases performance standards among those involved, as well as their classmates. Importantly, competition also creates role models who other young people look to emulate, driving up standards and creating an upward cycle of success which is enjoyed by the individual, their college or employer and ultimately the nation as a whole.

For our lecturers, the challenge of a competition brings fun and exciting new elements into teaching and training, making the experience more involving for all concerned.

Hence many of our students will be encouraged to take part in competition as part of their course. At a local, national and even international level, competitions play a vital role in raising standards, esteem and levels of expertise in further education and skills.

A recent survey of 2,000 parents and teachers, commissioned by Find a Future, which manages WorldSkills UK Skills Competitions, shows that the vast majority of parents approve of competition in schools, while more than half of the teachers questioned think that their schools could do more to offer youngsters the opportunity to compete.

More than nine in ten parents and teachers think it is important for all children to experience competition during their education.

85% of those questioned think children who have no experience of competition will be in for a rude awakening when entering the workplace.

94% agree that the experience of winning or losing during education prepares young people for later life.

Keeping Our Students SafeSafeguardingEast Durham College has an extensive safeguarding procedure which aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students who study with us. Our designated safeguarding team are available to provide support to students, families and staff.

All staff on campus have had safeguarding training and must be alert to the possibility of a student at risk of any safeguarding issues. If they recognise a concern, are told a concern by a third party or if a student makes a disclosure to them, they have the duty and responsibility to make those concerns known to a member of the safeguarding team. Students are also able to contact the team directly in person or via email at [email protected]

Prevent StrategyEast Durham College has a vital role to play in protecting students from the risks of extremism and radicalisation. This is underpinned by the Counter-terrorism & Security Act 2015 which states that colleges must have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. The college works closely with communities and partner agencies to safeguard vulnerable individuals who might be at risk from radicalisation.

British ValuesWe are dedicated to promoting the core fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and the acceptance of different faiths and beliefs.

At East Durham College we provide a range of opportunities to promote and develop these values within and beyond the curriculum.

Our students are given the opportunity to explore and develop these values to help prepare them for life in Britain today and to provide them with additional skills that will help them gain successful employment.
