Fire Door Safety Week, which this year took place between 24–30 September, created quite a stir in the press and across social media. It achieved wide-reaching national and trade

media coverage, throwing the spotlight on the importance of fire door safety.

Shocking research released as part of the campaign found that almost three quarters of flat tenants would ignore the guidance to ‘stay put’ if there was a fire in their building and their particular flat was not affected by fire or smoke.

The research also highlighted confusion around who is responsible for maintaining fire doors, and showed that a large number of tenants have yet to be reassured on fire safety post-Grenfell.

National media outlets including The Times helped publicise the campaign, while action groups including Grenfell United also offered their support.

Now in its sixth year, Fire Door Safety Week aims to stamp out the legacy of fire door neglect and raise awareness of the important role that fire doors play, while urging tenants to prepare for an emergency

installed or maintained. They might be damaged or even just left propped open, which defeats their purpose and significantly increases the risk of serious injuries or death in the event of a fire.

“The success of this year’s campaign is testament to the dedication and passion of our members, stakeholders and supporters in continuing to drive awareness of the life-saving abilities of correctly installed, maintained and certified fire doors.”

About three million new fire doors are bought and installed in the UK each year, and the vast majority are made from timber and manufactured by certified BWF members.

To follow the campaign on social media or to join the conversation, find @FDSafetyWeek on Twitter, and for more information, see www.firedoorsafetyweek.com.

by familiarising themselves with the fire safety plans in their building.

Speaking after Fire Door Safety Week, Helen Hewitt, acting CEO of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), which runs the campaign, said: “We’re thrilled with the success of Fire Door Safety Week this year. It’s fantastic to see so many businesses getting involved and joining the conversation to further spread the message and help us raise awareness of this crucial issue.

“We originally launched Fire Door Safety Week to tackle the public’s lack of knowledge of fire safety, which is still worryingly low. This year we found that people have lost confidence in their building’s ability to delay the spread of fire and smoke. Of course, when fitted correctly, fire doors can save lives, but the sad reality is that fire doors are often still poorly

It is said that time stops for no-one, and finding time seems to be a challenge for

the 20th century, or as told to me when I was younger, ‘Tempus fugit – time flies; you can’t, they fly too fast’. I’m not sure that I ever really understood what that meant, but my brother always thought it was funny. However, now, after 34 years of working with wood and having had four children fly the nest, I realise that time has flown and seems to be going by even faster.

Up, up & awayThe wise mechanic, who services our vehicles, has got me to look at time flying from a different viewpoint – a literal one. Not only wise, he is also a kind mechanic, as he treated me to an introductory flying lesson in a microlight four days ago. Up in the sky at 1,500ft in a canvas seat with an engine on your back certainly takes your

mind off the pressures of work. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it.

His advice is: ‘You have to book your work around your flying time, rather than your flying time around your work’. That is much harder said than done when there is always a job to complete and the

have completed making 10 box sashes, a bay window and 11 casements, all in sapele with doors to follow. The whole house where these are being fitted is wrapped in scaffold and the roof completely removed. The client simply wants to do everything properly. We have looked at the

be thinner, the whole design of weathering and decompression chambers for the sills etc. along with environment, all of which make offering a genuine guarantee very hard to achieve.

Christmas enquiriesWhen trying to provide traditional joinery for listed buildings, where the shoulders need to be flat, not rounded and filled with end-grain sealer, how can we be confident that we are offering the best to our customer? There are many great products and systems, but trying to recommend the ‘best’ one in which you have full confidence is nothing short of walking blindfold through a minefield.

We are beginning to have the usual run up of Christmas enquiries starting to come in, which includes a kitchen in the farm where we have the workshop. It is so near that it would be easier to carry the kitchen across the yard rather than load it to drive the 15m to the

front door. Another enquiry is from Jersey (a complete large house) – both have already mentioned that they want the work completed before Christmas. If we are successful in our quotations, then we will either need extra staff, work longer hours, or both.

We may not need a serviced vehicle to deliver the neighbour’s kitchen, but I think the mechanic is right in saying that there is always more work to do than there is time to do it in. There will always be another challenge and demand on time. The Christmas rush will come and fly past and new work pressures will squeeze free time, family time, and thinking time.

We are always being

guarantees offered by the paint manufacturers and notice that the wording is vague with ‘usable life’, ‘first maintenance’ or a large font saying; ‘6, 8, 10 YR All WEATHER PROTECTION’. However, none are an actual guarantee. Then thinking back to when I had a larger company and our windows were tested at BRE, we learnt about having a 2mm radius on the outside to prevent a sharp edge where the microns of paint would

told to think outside the box, so perhaps I should take the advice of the mechanic by thinking completely outside the box and booking another microlight lesson. Sitting on a piece of canvas 1,500ft above ground will certainly take my mind off things such as trying to offer paint guarantees…

demands of running a business always exist.

Paint guaranteesOne of this month’s demands is to supply a customer with the best possible paint finish. The actual spraying or painting is not the challenge; the challenge is to offer a long-term guarantee. We want, and our customer wants, a fairly maintenance-free painted timber finish for all the external joinery.

Alpi wins Elements Of Innovation Award

Alpi’s first finished panel collection, the ALPI-On, has been awarded

a Gold Award at the Elements of Innovation Awards at this year’s woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, the W Exhibition and furniture components show, Elements.

Created to offer the design market a new and inspiring take on surface design, the leading decorative surfaces producer, known for its use of reconstituted wood veneer, has created the new 12-strong collection with the contract market in mind. Designed to be an interior facing material, each panel features different grains, colours and depths to reflect the beauty of natural wood. They are also clad on both sides and can have a varnished, brushed or smooth finish.

On winning the award, Alpi SpA’s Pier Luigi Corti, says: “To win an Elements of Innovation Award is a great honour for our company. The whole team have worked hard to create this new collection

and every design within the range offers a unique and appealing aesthetic. We’re confident the market will respond positively to our latest designs and explore the possibilities they offer.”

Independent Judge and acting CEO of the British Woodworking Federation, Helen Hewitt, says: “I chose Alpi because of the creative nature of the new collection. My background in wallpaper design has opened my eyes to how spaces can be connected by patterns, surfaces and colour. I immediately migrated towards these designs because of their unique colour range and vivid textures. I can clearly see this being used in the interiors and hotel sector; it’s truly inspiring.”

Independent Judge, Paul Lighterness, adds: “We live in a visual world and to me, this product is visually striking. It stood out because of its contrasting colours and exciting patina. It’s pushed the boundaries of design and that is what innovation is all about.”

Alpi SpA’s Pier Luigi Corti

Leading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Biesse UK, has won the

Elements of Innovation Gold Award for its unique Opera R sanding machine at this year’s W Exhibition and Elements.

Part of the company’s new ‘Automaction’ concept, which brings automated, inter-connected production manufacturing processes to the woodworking industry, the new Opera R has been designed to offer a greater sanding consistency and a higher continuity of output on flat panels and Shaker doors.

Controlled via a 15in touch screen, the new

Opera R has succeeded in reproducing sanding processes that were previously only achievable through manual methods. This has resulted in the elimination of human error, reduced production costs and increased efficiency, leading to greater productivity.

Giacomo Mariotti, Product Area Manager for Biesse, says: “This machine is an industry first and we believe it will revolutionise the way the industry works. Automation has huge potential in the woodworking sector but is yet to be fully utilised. We hope our machines will change this.

“The Opera R sanding

machine – partnered with a collaborative robot that offloads the doors – offers quality, safety and consistency during the sanding process. It’s simplified the cycle and as a result, the return on investment is almost immediate. It’s a versatile machine – it can be used as a standalone machine or in a production line – and we have a number of options to accommodate a wide range of applications, including a model that features two robots and two conveyer belts to double productivity.

“We’re offering new solutions to the woodworking industry and it’s fantastic to be

recognised by our peers. We are proud to be at the forefront of innovation and we will continue to create exceptional solutions that will benefit our customers and help them succeed.”

Independent judge and Course Leader at Buckinghamshire New University, Paul Lighterness, adds: “Automation is an exciting area of growth in the woodworking industry and it’s fascinating to see how this kind of technology can increase productivity and efficiencies in the sector. Biesse’s innovative Opera R was a worthy winner.”

The Better Timber Buildings conference – taking our timber buildings to the next level

Following on from the success of the last two annual conferences, TRADA

and their service provider Exova BM TRADA have joined forces to host a one-day timber conference levelled at uniting the industry in the pursuit of a common goal: building Better Timber Buildings.

On 15 November 2018, members of the timber industry will assemble at the Royal Geographical Society, London, for a day of talks, Q&As, and energetic debate. The conference is aimed at everyone – from architects and engineers

to suppliers and clients – and aspires to support individuals looking to hone their talents when it comes to designing superb structures in timber. The day will involve four central sessions and attempts to unite inspirational case studies with practical hands-on guidance where high-performance is critical.

A broad array of topics are predicted, with planned talks and discussions around the following:

• The awe-inspiring Macallan Distillery, which is arguably one

of the most complex timber structures ever built in the UK

• The potential of timber design guides, such as TRADA’s National Structural Timber Specification (NSTS), which attempt to encapsulate decades of experience and innovation into streamlined documents that helpfully steer you to specify right from the ground up

“The Better Timber Buildings conference

is about switching tack,” says TRADA’s Rupert Scott. “Timber’s popularity continues to grow but now, more than ever, we need to look further and begin taking our timber buildings to the next level. This means aspiring to do a better job right through the chain –

AXYZ router helps boost production at leading UK timber merchant

Following installation of a high-performance CNC router supplied

by AXYZ International, Burton upon Trent-based W.H. Mason & Son (Timber Merchants) has boosted production and enabled further diversification into new markets. Established in 1897, the company is one of the longest running and most successful businesses in Staffordshire, founded on an impressive pedigree and supported by a continually expanding customer base.

As a major importer, stockist and distributor of different kinds of timber, the company enables a wide range of applications in many different markets, including the industrial woodworking, furniture manufacturing, joinery and panel processing sectors. A key activity, however, is the supply of bespoke products such as exhibition stands, retail display units and shelving, garden furniture and, somewhat uniquely, wooden casks for the wine, brewing and distilling industries.

Director of W.H. Mason & Son, Mike Cherry, commented: “Our successful business relationship with AXYZ International dates back to the time we installed a smaller CNC router supplied by Pacer Systems prior to its acquisition by AXYZ. At that time,

we were sourcing only production tools from the AXYZ 24/7 online purchasing facility and it was due to AXYZ International’s known reputation for reliability that we decided to purchase a new and higher-performance AXYZ machine that would better meet current and predicted future customer requirements.”

The AXYZ CNC router installed is one of the 4000 series and arguably the most popular within the industries being served by W.H. Mason & Son. Sales Manager of the company, Jason Cherry, commented: “The AXYZ 4010 machine has a processing area of 3 × 1.5m. It will handle all sizes and volumes of the work we undertake and incorporates a 10-station ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility for work involving multiple tooling requirements and the latest AXYZ A2MC machine controller. As explained by AXYZ International, this particular machine enhancement is designed to comprehensively resolve problems associated with ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration/deceleration frequently experienced with less technically advanced control systems.”

The router is supported by the non-standard VECTRIC Aspire design and production software rather than the standard

VECTRIC Pro version generally supplied with AXYZ machines. Jason Cherry added: “The choice of software was based on our need for greater flexibility and ease of use and because the VECTRIC Aspire software is fully compatible with the laser cutting systems we also use.”

On the service provided by AXYZ International, prior to, during and following installation of the AXYZ 4010 router, both Mike and Jason Cherry concurred: “The service was excellent, from the initial discussions covering our precise requirements, the ability to visit the AXYZ main facility in Telford for a demonstration of the router before placing an order through to the subsequent on-site product training and ongoing technical support provided.”

As to the future, Mike Cherry concluded: “We have the space and capacity to increase the number of machines and make additions to our workforce to meet customer requirements. For both, the service provided by AXYZ International will continue to be a key factor.”

For further information, visit www.axyz.co.uk or call 01952 291 600. For more information about W.H. Mason and its affiliate companies, visit www.whmasonandsonltd or call 01283 563 455.

Häfele signals What’s New with launch of new trade and consumer focused product guide

Furniture fittings and architectural hardware specialist, Häfele, has launched

What’s New: The Autumn Edit, its comprehensive guide to the latest innovative additions to the company’s extensive product portfolio.

In response to growing customer demand for literature that can be handed to consumers, this is the first edition of What’s New to come in two sections: a trend brochure designed to inspire both consumers and tradespeople, and a product update directory, exclusively for the trade audience.

The trend brochure is packed with design inspiration from style capital Milan following Häfele’s visit to the city’s EuroCucina exhibition earlier this year. Häfele customers will be able to order multiple copies of the brochure, which has been specifically designed to be suitable for consumers to take home and keep. As well as providing insight into the industry trends which look set to dominate British Furniture Design in 2019, the brochure showcases the perfect Häfele solutions for integrating each of these trends into kitchen designs.

Häfele introduces new Minerva Ice Blue Worktop

Häfele has introduced the new Minerva Ice

Blue worktop from Sylmar to its extensive kitchen worktop offering. White with navy blue flecks, the new Ice Blue worktop has been introduced in response to the growing consumer trend for bold, statement colours in the kitchen. It joins the company’s existing range of Minerva solid surface worktops, which are available in a variety of colours.

Flexible and easy to install, Minerva worktops are hard-wearing, scratch resistant and long-lasting. Their seamless joints and smooth finishes make them a particularly desirable choice for kitchen island units.

Minerva worktops can all be installed with standard woodworking equipment and they are also supplied with pre-finished surfaces and edges, removing the need for expensive and time- consuming templating.

accent colours in place of more traditional neutrals. This new worktop is the perfect choice to complement statement kitchen colours and works particularly well with the on-trend deep blue colourway.

“Stylish and superb quality, this latest offering from Sylmar is also incredibly versatile, lending itself to a whole range of kitchen styles.”

Häfele’s worktop range features over 140 different material finishes, including granite, Corian, quartz and timber, which are available in a choice of textures and finishes.

The Minerva Ice Blue worktop is available to purchase online through a trade account on www.hafele.co.uk or through their network of trade partners.

It includes features on:• The concealed kitchen;

including details of the smart solutions Häfele provides to help conceal clutter and achieve the sleek, minimalist look

• Handles vs. Handle-less; a fresh take on which handles to use in the kitchen to create stylish finishes, including profile or recessed options for an on-trend, handle-less aesthetic

• Making a feature; advice on how to incorporate a feature theme into a kitchen design with varying degrees of intensity.

The product update directory provides

extensive information on over 1,000 products which are newly available from Häfele. It also details news that is exclusive to the company’s customers, such as the introduction of the new ‘My Häfele’ portal for easy, 24-hour account management.

Becci Pell, Marketing Communications Manager at Häfele UK, comments: “Our What’s New guide is a must-have for anyone in the industry looking to incorporate the hottest new trends into interiors. We’ve listened to our customer-base and designed The Autumn Edit to inspire homeowners and kitchen designers

alike, helping them to make great looking choices that will offer unrivalled functionality now, and for years to come.

Bespoke macros for Alphacam streamline processes for tech- savvy David SalisburyThe UK’s leading

manufacturer of high quality orangeries has

developed a unique approach to using Alphacam. It creates specialist macros to populate vital manufacturing information in the software.

David Salisbury Joinery Ltd specialises in the manufacturer and installation of prestigious, contemporary, high quality timber conservatories and orangeries, largely from sapele hardwood, and Siberian larch. Operating with around 130 employees from purpose-built premises in Somerset, owner and founder, David Salisbury, says: “In 2003 we bought our first CNC router to manufacture conservatory roofs and process door leaves. I started creating macros for this.”

The company initially became known for hardwood conservatories; however, its flagship product is now the orangery, which in

recent years has become more popular than conservatories due to its flexible usage.

Processing Manager, Graham Hill, explains this change in the market: “Conservatories can often be too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Orangeries have flat, insulated roofs with a glazed lantern area in the middle, considerably reducing the glass area. It combines all the good aspects of a conservatory but with a much more liveable room, which is an extension of the house. This means they’ve become hugely popular.”

Utilising macros Established as the UK market leader in these products, Graham Hill says the company’s technical ability allows them to take on complex and sensitive projects for listed and graded buildings.

“We believe we’re the only company able to take on particular projects – for example, when it’s a very complex or sensitive site, we have to work with

authorities on what’s acceptable, due to the nature of the building it’s going on to. Our expertise is designing structures that will meet the authority’s approval, while giving the customer what they want.”

Work has recently been completed on Arlington Hall, a National Trust property, which involved replacing the iconic, traditional glass roof Victorian conservatory. The company’s technical approach allowed them to automate much of this project using custom macros in Alphacam.

“On a typical contract, at least half of the components go through Alphacam. In the Victorian days when orangeries were made from stone, the pilasters were stone columns. Now these are replicated in wood using Alphacam. We also put the enhanced facias through Alphacam for the outside cutting on our Maka CNC machine tools, then the whole of the roof is done through the CNC.”

The company has a unique approach

developing new software for their Oak Building range and, once finished, the macro-based solution should reduce CNC programming time down from four days, to about three hours.

Alphacam’s ability to take the macros in its stride to create the NC code is a huge benefit. For a design that has already been proven out, it takes only 30 seconds to pull in the component, run a standard simulation test, and then post straight to the machine.

Alphacam success CAD/CAM Programmer James Davis uses Alphacam and macros on a daily basis. He says the macro screen requests the data, which opens a drop-down list of components. “All components have different features, but the individual macro can populate all the fields for most of the components we need. So simply picking the component from the drop-down menu generally populates all the required fields. Once

to Alphacam, as David Salisbury explains: “I’d always had a keen interest in the different geometry of conservatory roofs. I wanted a software solution that would allow us to solve any geometry issue.”

Alphacam is used in two ways: first, traditionally for complex bespoke parts and curved work, which is generally unique; and second, with macros to automate large repetitive jobs. Graham Hill says: “We use macros that we write ourselves for around 75% of the work we do, which import the relevant information into Alphacam. The macros effectively provide a platform for telling Alphacam what to do by populating all the relevant fields.”

Working to tolerances of 1mm or less, high accuracy is vital to ensure the completed product is correct. “We’ve honed our processes over many years, to the extent that we don’t assemble any of our roof structures in the factory… each component is taken to the customer’s

site and erected there, without ever having been put together before, because we’re completely confident of the accuracy that when it goes up on site it will all fit perfectly.”

The Alphacam macros play such a key role in the running of the business that they employ a full-time Software Developer, Adrian Fear, who supports existing macros with improvements, and creates new ones. “The macros allow us to automate production without having to do manual CNC work. We drive most of it from a database, pushing through all manner of information, including length, breadth, width, tenon information, pocket information that the tenons go into, rebates, mitres… it’s all the information needed to cut the component.

“Without the macro we’d have to input that information into Alphacam either manually or drop in an existing drawing and adjust it.” Adrian Fear is currently

New Technical Support Engineer for Alphacam

Vero Software have appointed Carmen Seitan as a Technical

Support Engineer for Alphacam. Carmen brings 10 years’ experience of customer services and support in the engineering industry to her new role, including working for an Alphacam distributor. She has also worked for a CAD company supporting and training customers throughout Europe.

Based at the Reading office, she will assist Alphacam users at a

time when the software’s direct customer base and reseller network are both growing.

Alphacam Support and Services Manager, Marie Cassidy, says: “Carmen’s extensive experience both in customer service and support in general, and her knowledge of Alphacam in particular – along with a Masters Degree in Industry Engineering – means she’ll hit the ground running when it comes to giving technical advice to customers.”

the code’s created and posted, that’s the macro’s job finished for that component.”

Alphacam 3D simulator is used to check before posting to the CNC machine. The two machines used – Maka 1 and 2 – have 32 tools on each and are capable of full 5-axis routing, with Maka 1 working with bigger pieces of timber. Maka 2 has twin channels with automated pods in line for robot loading. The machine sets them up wherever they’re programmed to be, and the robot loads the timber

on. David Salisbury says robotic loading presented the most difficult programming challenge, to position the vacuum pods automatically. “We worked closely with Alphacam’s application engineers on developing this. Now we’ve got a fully automated system where a bar code ties in with the NC code generated by Alphacam. It goes onto the machine, which reads the bar code and calls up the right NC code. That’s been very successful.”

Alphacam toolpaths cut intricate designs on 8m Viking pillars

A woodworking company wasn’t phased when an intricate 8m

part was too big for its machine tool – it simply built a door in the side of the machining centre and supported the piece outside by mounting it on a cradle.

Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri programmed its CMS Ares 6018 with Alphacam to cut authentic motifs into carved pillars for a Viking museum at Lejre, near

the city of Roskilde in Denmark. The Land of the Legends is a 106-acre archaeological open-air museum, recreating typical Viking buildings showing how the warriors lived between 900 and 1,300 years ago.

A project is underway to rebuild one of those buildings, the King’s Hall, measuring 60 × 12m, and 10m high, containing four solid oak pillars to hold the roof. The pillars are each 8m tall, decorated

them as STEP files, which were imported into Alphacam. The designs sank into the wood to a depth of 25mm, and were machined with a series of small ball-nose cutters, which were required to achieve the necessary detail.

The cutting time for each pillar was around 70 hours, meaning that the overall machining time for the project was more than four weeks.

Having invested in CNC and Alphacam’s specialist 5-axis Ultimate module around two and a half years ago, Niels Bystrup works with it on wood, plastic and Sika Block. As well as the CMS Ares, the company also programs a recently acquired Fanuc Robodrill with Alphacam, mainly for machining smaller components.

In conclusion, Karl Erik Andersen says: “The story only leaves one question – did the Vikings really have Alphacam and CNC machine tools 1,200 years ago, when the originals were made?”

For further information, visit the website – www.alphacam.com.

Changing the part round for machining the opposite end Managing Director of Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri, Niels Bystrup

Viking cutting

with intricate and complex motifs from Nordic mythology, showing the Nordic Gods Thor, Odin, Frej and Freja, depicting how the Vikings saw and adored their Gods.

The contract to cut the motifs into the pillars was awarded to Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri, a small company with just two employees, based at Svendborg in Denmark. Managing Director, Niels Bystrup, knew that even

though the designs were extremely intricate, he would be able to program his machine tool with Alphacam to easily and successfully cut the solid oak.

But there was an initial physical hurdle to overcome before the Alphacam programs could start cutting wood. While each pillar weighs 1,000kg and has a diameter of 450mm, it was the 8m length that caused an issue, as the 5-axis CMS Ares with its Fanuc 31B controller is only 6,000mm long.

He made a door on the left side of the machine, and the part rests on a cradle outside. Without the door, the part could not have been loaded. “The machining area in ‘X’ was sufficient to have the area to be worked on inside in one go,” says Niels Bystrup. “But as our CMS Ares doesn’t have a rotary table, the upper half of the pillar was machined first, then it was turned 180° to machine the other half.”

Prior to the job beginning, Neil Bystrup was in close contact

with Alphacam’s Danish reseller, Østjydsk CAD-CAM. Karl Erik Andersen, from Østjydsk CAD-CAM, says: “We worked extensively with Niels Bystrup on test programs, and loading the ‘heavy’ solids, as the program file size for just half a pillar was 250Mb. Jobs like this must be considered carefully, as there couldn’t be any trials. It had to be right first time, as there were only four pieces of material for the finished pillars. We couldn’t afford any mistakes.”

The pillars are made of ‘Navy oak,’ from trees planted 200 years ago, when Britain took over the Danish Navy. “At that time, the King of Denmark ordered new trees to be planted, so they could build a new Navy. Now the trees are ready, but, of course, ships aren’t built of oak any more. So the trees are used for other purposes.”

The decorations were created by the museum, based on original designs found in graves and excavations in Denmark and Norway. Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri received

Homag Sprayteq S-100 – revolutionising surface finishing for the future

Sprayteq S-100 spray coating machine – consistent high quality finish

The Sprayteq S-100 offers automated painting and lacquering solutions for all workpieces

Whether you’re in the panel processing industry,

door, window or stair market, produce flooring or interior fitting elements, Homag has the perfect solution for any business looking to completely transform their manual spraying process and step up into the world of automated painting and lacquering. As one of the latest additions to Homag’s product portfolio, the Sprayteq S-100 range was specifically designed with both small- and medium-sized companies in mind. Equipped with a reciprocating arm

and four spray guns, these machines feature a fully automated vacuum conveyor belt to transport workpieces for ultimate flexible, throughput efficiency. The Sprayteq S-100 can be used as both a stand-alone spray machine or as part of an extensive finishing line. The integration of an automated paint application system ensures that a high quality finish is continuously achieved while reducing the amount of overspray waste, ultimately proving to be a true cost saving investment for businesses. The cost efficiencies are also boosted via the Sprayteq’s

intelligent workpiece detection system. A high resolution light grid accurately identifies the contours of each part, precisely controlling the paint flow of the individual spray guns. In the standard specification, the large machine filters are easily accessible and replaceable for the simplicity of cleaning and general maintenance. This feature reduces the effort required from the operators in terms of the upkeep of the machine. In addition to this, the introduction of automatic spraying within production significantly increases the working conditions for employees. The Sprayteq S-100 can provide consistently high quality painting or lacquering for up to 2,400 parts per shift; therefore not only does it reduce paint exposure for operators but it also eases workload pressure produced when using a traditional manual paint applicator. Automated spraying with an added throughfeed alternative Enhancing the automated spraying application process further, the Sprayteq S-100 can be equipped with a complete throughfeed transport belt where workpieces

are effortlessly fed into the spray booth on individual trays. Once the spraying process is complete, the parts continue to be conveyed out of the machine to the end of the belt. Especially designed to transport even the smallest of parts, this model widens the opportunity of production possibilities. Not only was this option developed to offer the market an efficient alternative to manual spraying but purposely built to require low operating costs at an affordable investment level. Enhancing spraying technology with automated efficiencies Homag also offers an automated workpiece handling concept for the loading and unloading of parts. Based on the standard Sprayteq S-100 range of features, this model is capable of one-man operation. Using an innovatively designed infeed system, components are gently

guided into the spray booth. Once the spraying process is complete the parts are then reloaded back onto the workpiece loading trolley. This concept provides an easy, flexible and reliable finishing solution that requires low personnel and due to its compact design, low production space.

The Sprayteq S-100 can be adapted and individually specified to meet the production demands of the manufacturer. Specific functions can be incorporated to the standard model to offer increased flexibility. Combining a two-way loading function provides uninterrupted operating cycles. Subsequently, this doubles the amount of workpieces within the machine, since one loading rack can be changed while the other batch is in operation. Furthermore, the largest of production volumes can be achieved on this Sprayteq model by doubling both the automated concepts

of loading and unloading. The use of a two-way loading function at both sides of the machine delivers an almost ‘self-sufficient’ concept, significantly increasing efficiency in production. Success flows in automated finishing Already proving to be a roaring success within the market, Homag has completed a number of installations and is continuously receiving a high level of enquiries for the new automated spraying solution. Opening up the possibilities for cost effective automatic spraying technology to all levels of industry, the Sprayteq range can be coupled with flexible payment plans from Homag Finance making these machines more affordable than ever. f you would like more information or a demonstration of the Sprayteq S-100 spraying machines, please contact Homag UK on 01332 856 424 or visit www.homag.com.

The electric drill inventor keeps fuelling its cordless revolution Having launched

new cordless grinders, and a hammer drill

earlier in the year, Fein is extending its 18V product range with the ASCM 18 QSW four-speed cordless drill/driver. This is an alternate version of the 12 and 18V ASCM machine, already popular within the community but with two new benefits. Firstly the Multi-Volt feature allows the machine to be powered by a 12 to 18V Lithium-ion battery, and secondly, the body is lighter and more compact, weighing 1.7kg.

Tradesman value professional tools, and Dieter Zimmermann is one such person. His surname (which means ‘carpenter’ in English) is spot-on, because he undertakes a lot of

renovation work and takes pleasure from doing so, even using the tools at home. “I’ve renovated my apartment’s two floors, and will do the bathroom next year.” In addition, the 39-year-old has helped many of his friends, and some, like him, have also purchased apartments in old buildings or houses from the 1960s and 1970s. “Some of them had to be completely renovated.” To tackle such work, Dieter relies on Fein.

His latest acquisition is the ABH 18 rotary hammer, with which he recently punched slots in concrete for routing electric cables, and drilled holes for electrical outlet sockets in a kitchen. “There was nothing it couldn’t do; without it we wouldn’t have finished the job. It really felt like the batteries maintained

their charge right to the end. And, the battery’s charge lasted an extremely long time, which, frankly, surprised me – in a positive way.” In addition to its powerful performance, he finds the Fein battery system highly practical. “Once the rotary hammer’s battery was flat, I just plugged in the one from my MultiMaster, then got back to work.”

Professionals in particular need high-quality power tools that they can depend on to do the job, are easy to use and can be used for a variety of tasks. The issue of time is also an important factor for professionals because they often only have a small timeframe in which to install the kitchen in the customer’s premises or to complete interior work in general. To make

this possible, it is key that all drills are supported by what is referred to as the Fein QuickIN interface, meaning the end-user can change over accessories tool free, with a large compliment that helps turn a drill into one universal tool for numerous applications.

There is also now the SKE drill chuck, an automatically re-tensioning drill chuck from Röhm that prevents drill bits and taps from slipping. Even in reverse running, the drill chuck is stable and remains reliably closed. Other new additions include tapping collets, which can be changed just as easily without the need for

tools. The collets transmit the torque to the square surface of the tap, which prevents slippage. The big news, though, is that following numerous requests by community members, Fein has now launched an angle head, which enables users to work around corners, even in tight spaces. This

product development is one of many that will occur in response to ideas and tooling requests by British tradesman within the Fein UK community.

For more information on Fein’s cordless revolution, see www.fein.com/en_uk/ or call them on 01327 308 730.

Fire door safety ignored despite Grenfell tragedyDespite the

shocking tragedy of the Grenfell fire in London last

summer, an online poll has revealed that 50% of tradespeople don’t feel confident in advising customers on fire door safety.

Despite extensive media coverage about the dangers of inadequate fire protection in offices and homes since the disaster, less than 20% of tradespeople polled have seen an increase in demand for fire safety products or parts, such as replacement intumescent strips for fire doors.

The results are published in support of Fire Door Safety Week (which took place from 24–30 September), aiming to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors in saving lives.

The poll followed a national survey of 2,000 adults across the country, carried out by online trade supplier IronmongeryDirect and supported by the Fire Industry Association. The results illustrate an alarming lack of general public awareness of the life-saving role of fire doors, which are a legal requirement in all commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings.

A particularly disturbing outcome was that 70% of respondents would not know who to contact if they noticed a problem with a fire door. In addition, almost one in two people surveyed admitted that they do not know how to identify a fire door.

Ian Moore, CEO at the Fire Industry Association, said: “Fire doors are one of many essential elements to keeping safe from fire. In all cases, a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment should be carried out by the responsible person – usually the building owner. A fire risk

assessment should determine, through thorough inspection, any potential risks or hazards so that they may be resolved. If you are worried about hazards and risks from fire, you can always contact the Fire Industry Association, for free and impartial information and they will be able to direct you to an expert on the subject.”

This research highlights the need for tradespeople and the wider public to be more aware of the essential role that fire doors play in keeping them safe. Fire doors are specifically designed to withstand fire for between 30 and 240 minutes and, when used correctly, they can make a significant difference in saving lives and protecting buildings. In addition, 34% of people nationally said they would prop a fire door open to let in fresh air or give easier access, among other reasons.

According to the BWF, the organisation behind Fire Door Safety Week, three million fire doors are installed each year. However, they remain a significant area of neglect and should be regularly checked and maintained by those responsible for the upkeep of the building.

Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect, Wayne Lysaght-Mason, commented: “We are now over a year on from the Grenfell Tower fire and it is disturbing that a significant proportion of the general public appear to lack basic fire door knowledge.”

The safety campaign says that fire doors are often the first line of defence in a fire and their correct specification, maintenance and management can be the difference between life and death for building occupants. Visit www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/fdsw to see a video guide on fire door safety.

SterlingOSB converts camper van into cosy home-from-home Norbord’s

engineered wood panel, SterlingOSB, is

a fashionable feature in many bars, restaurants and retail outlets due to the earthy, natural look which is en vogue today. Now the FSC-certified board has made it to the uber-trendy camper van world.

Anthony Smart, a carpenter and house builder, has converted his transit van into a small home on wheels, featuring wooden floors, a mini kitchen completely decked out in

Viessmann wood combustion systems – innovative wood firing systems up to 8,000kWThe global energy

situation is characterised by limited natural

gas and oil reserves as consumption increases. In addition, increasing CO2 emissions heat the earth’s atmosphere and thus lead to climate change. This forces a responsible use of existing resources and requires more efficiency and the increased use of renewable energies.

Biomass plays a special role here. It provides most of the renewable energy, is steadily available and can be stored as needed, unlike wind and solar energy. Wood as a fuel remains cost-effective in times of unpredictable energy prices, burns CO2 neutral and, in conjunction with sustainable forestry, helps to implement environmental and economic goals.

As a specialist for biomass boilers and power plants in the

power range up to 8,000kW, Viessmann Holzfeuerungsanlagen GmbH is one of the leading full-service providers in this industry. Viessmann Holzfeuerungsanlagen focuses on the conception and implementation of biomass plants for industrial, commercial and municipal customers. With an export share of around 88% of sales, the company is internationally oriented, with more than 4,000 plants in operation in Europe alone. Viessmann Holzfeuerungsanlagen (MAWERA) was founded in 1975 as Mawera and currently employs around 120 people at its location in Hard am Bodensee, Austria.

AFS BIOMASS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART

SYNGASMART SOLID BIOMASS CHP PLANT

After leading the way in the promotion of biomass heating

systems throughout the UK since 2012 AFS Biomass can now proudly present the cutting edge SyngaSmart micro co-generation plants. The fully containerized and modular configuration enables multiple installations to reach the desired power output, from 30 kWe (45 kWth) upwards.

CHP, the generation of both heat and electricity, from biomass has long been researched and developed, with limited success. Finally the patent pending SyngaSmart is available. Manufactured in Italy to exacting standards the SyngaSmart offers an integrated solution for heat and power generation through pyro-gasification, the use of high temperatures in a low oxygen environment to convert biomass into a gas called syngas. This is used to fuel standard internal combustion engines which turn the syngas energy into electric and thermal power.

Ideal for the woodworking industry which inherently suffers from the punitively high cost of electricity to run CNC machines and more, often in poorly insulated factories requiring space and process heating. All solid wood waste can be used, either as wood chip or as briquettes from poorly shredded waste and shavings. So why choose a SyngaSmart:• Huge, ever increasing

savings against current fossil fuel and electricity costs which continue to rise.

• Wood waste disposal savings – create energy from waste rather than pay for its removal.

• Mitigate against future carbon taxes.

• Enhance green credentials – the only emissions and waste are some of the CO₂ consumed by the biomass during growth and a small amount of biochar, a powerful, natural fertilizer.

• Modular – install the best sized plant to match energy needs.

• Safe and silent – the syngas is generated and aspirated in a negative pressure flow with no storage required, negating any risk of explosions or leaks, with a very low acoustic

footprint.• Fully automated

and programmable via the internet or on site through proprietary SCADA interface and software.

• Eligible for the Government RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme. The RHI scheme was

designed to reward businesses which contribute towards the UK’s carbon reduction targets. Payable for 20 years for all the metered eligible heat generated from biomass, it provides a very welcome additional income stream.

AFS Biomass Ltd are leading the way in the promotion and implementation of all forms of biomass energy

generation. A major partner with ETA and Herz, two of the most respected and reliable biomass boiler manufacturers in the market today, AFS can now offer the unbeatable SyngaSmart solid biomass CHP units. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers and CPD biomass training houses in the UK, AFS Biomass offers the design, installation and ongoing maintenance to many diverse sectors including furniture & kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly

satisfied clients.P & A Fencing & Sheds

in Mold already have 800 kW of ETA biomass boilers providing space heating, water heating and process heating for factory and warehouse buildings, a wood treatment and drying kiln, a garden centre and an office block. As Rhys Hughes, the Operations Director, says, “Investing in biomass was one of the best business decisions we have made at P & A. Not only have we created excellent savings on our old gas and LPG heating costs, we produce enough wood chip from our waste to run our biomass boilers all year

round, FREE fuel. We have recently acquired a new site which will require a large amount of heat. As one of the units in Mold also has a high electrical demand we have decided to re-locate one of the biomass boilers to the new site and install a SyngaSmart CHP unit in its place. That will create even greater fossil fuel savings and increase an already impressive RHI income stream. AFS Biomass were highly professional all the way through the projects to date, from initial advice, to the full design, installation, commissioning and

ongoing maintenance of the boiler systems. We have no hesitation at all in employing their services further for the implementation of the biomass CHP plant. I would not hesitate in recommending AFS

Biomass to any business considering converting to biomass.”

Whether looking for a traditional biomass heating system or for the latest state-of-the- art technology in the field of combined heat and power, now is the time to act for maximum benefit. Fossil fuel costs continue to rise, carbon taxes become ever more punitive and the RHI is, for the time being, extremely attractive. Why not join the ever increasing number of businesses helping themselves and the environment through the adoption of biomass for future energy needs? AFS Biomass are in prime position to help you achieve those goals.T: 0161 302 2851E: [email protected]: www.afsbiomass.com

WOODWASTE

Specialist woodworking workshop purchases new wood waste heater

A specialist woodworking workshop in London has

purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating for the business.

The London Art Workshop in East London is an established workshop serving the creative industries, including artists, galleries, designers and retailers with its range of fine art furniture for retail and visual merchandising.

A move from Hackney to Leyton required the

London Art Workshop’s WT5 wood waste heater

and the heater is easy to use and reliable.

Now, the London Art Workshop is benefiting from being able to convert all its wood waste to heat, as the wood waste heater provides a free, environmentally friendly

business to review its heating needs. Its original Hackney workshop had low ceilings so was easily heated with standard gas heaters. However, the new larger workshop had no heating, so the company needed to find a cost-effective solution for the business. Although the employees took to wearing several layers of clothing in winter, their hands were always cold, as wearing gloves just isn’t practical while manufacturing. They were also filling a skip with wood waste each week, so a wood waste heater seemed a great solution

to both problems.Reading about the

benefits of wood waste heaters and their ability to save companies money on waste disposal and heating, the team contacted Wood Waste Technology to find out more about converting wood offcuts into energy. After speaking to Kurt Cockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology and arranging a site survey, London Art Workshop ordered a WT5, which was installed earlier this year.

The business now burns all its wood waste, so its waste removal costs are minimal and the new heater keeps the space warm. As an additional bonus, the new heater is also creating a tidier workplace and saving space as, previously, all the waste would pile up around the factory while waiting for disposal. Everyone thinks it’s a win-win!

Apparently, word is now getting around the industrial estate about London Art Workshop’s wood waste heater, so some of the neighbouring businesses have asked to drop off some of their wood waste. As a result, the team at London Art Workshop will no doubt be recommending these other businesses talk to Wood Waste Technology soon, as the management are delighted they chose them as their supplier, as they say that from the initial point of contact right through to installation they’ve been a fantastic group of people to deal with,

facility to heat the factory while saving the company vast amounts of money on waste disposal fees. The company has also purchased a summer heat dump, to allow the waste wood to continue to burn throughout the summer, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere.

Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted that we could help The London Art Workshop lower its operational costs by saving money on heating and waste disposal.”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing

maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the official UK distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

Call Wood Waste Technology today on 01785 250 400 and start to recoup some value from the waste in your business, or alternatively, why not visit www.woodwastetechnology.com or www.grossuk.co.uk to find out more.

Dustraction: going the extra mileDowntime is costly

to any business but when faced with a factory that

operates a minimum of 20 hours a day and supplies over 45,000 cut parts for the production of 300 three-piece suites every 24 hours, fitting a brand-new extraction system into DFS’ Lincoln House Woodmill was no mean feat for dust extraction specialists, Dustraction.

“To put things into perspective, one hour of downtime in our factory would cost us £10,000,” explains Eddie McDermott, Woodmill Manager at DFS Lincoln House Woodmill. “So, when installing a new extraction system, turning

the machines off, or limiting the number of machines in use while it was being fitted, was simply not an option for us. We needed to use a company that we could rely on to get the job done quickly and efficiently.”

The site has grown significantly in the past few years, with the introduction of several new traditional woodworking machines and CNCs on the factory floor. Working off two separate cyclo-filter systems to accommodate the latest machines, Lincoln House Woodmill’s extraction systems had reached their maximum capacity. And, with a new

MZ CNC machine centre ready to be installed into the factory, Dustraction was set the task of creating a new extraction system that would simplify the operation and future-proof the business by offering 30% expansion, without resulting in any downtime. In order for the team to achieve this, Dustraction built the new extraction system around the existing design and, when it came to fitting the extraction system to the machines, the team worked when the factory was closed. “Dustraction even modified the old system so we could use our new MZ machine

centre before our new system was fully up and running,” adds Eddie. “This is why I like working with Dustraction. They really do go the extra mile for their customers and they get the job done with minimal fuss. Where other companies may have been put off by the idea of working late nights and weekends, the Dustraction team put the hours in and the results speak for themselves.”

The system’s reliability was also an important factor for Eddie to consider. “For us, money saving comes from having no break downs. We work to a ‘just in time’ philosophy, so a fault with our extraction system could lead to production grinding to a halt. Customer service is extremely important to DFS and delivering

our customers’ orders on time is paramount to the company’s ongoing success. Having used Dustraction before, I have every confidence in the new system and I know the team are on hand if any issues do arise.”

The new Dustrax 4X6 cyclo system, which has been designed specifically for operating on a continuous basis, has streamlined the overall dust extraction process and has allowed for 30% growth if new machines need to be added to the factory floor. Maintenance has also been minimised, reducing ongoing downtime and servicing costs, thanks to very few moving parts and a robust 3mm-thick mild steel sheet body. The clever design also extends the life of the filter sleeves

and guarantees efficiency levels lower than 0.2 mg/m³, falling in line with existing European Legislation.

Eddie adds, “The new cyclo system fits the brief perfectly and it was installed with minimal disruption to our work. I have every faith in what Dustraction’s team do and the systems they install. They are experts in their field and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.” The relationship is also set to continue, as planning for another extraction upgrade in another site is already in the pipeline. Dustraction is due to start work on the new system in the coming months.

LIGNA 2019:

Next year, from 27–31 May, Ligna will showcase the full spectrum

of innovations from providers of woodworking

printing, pattern length is not limited by printing cylinder diameter. We can now print patterns up to 6,000mm long,” said Holger Dzeia, head of marketing and sales at Interprint.

Inspection systems that ensure consistently high quality are becoming increasingly important in digital printing, with scanners already successfully integrated into single-pass lines all around the world. In the near future, camera-based control systems will ensure maximum quality and process reliability across the entire value chain, from printing and impregnation right through to the final pressing stage. The growing uptake of digital printing systems in the timber and woodworking industry is opening up promising opportunities for technology providers. The increasing compatibility between established gravure printing systems and new digital options is also having a positive influence in this context. Further opportunities for technology providers may come from the growth of decentralised print production.

Sanding & spray coating innovations Visitors to next year’s Ligna can also expect to see many exciting spray coating innovations. For instance, it is now possible to produce both matt and glossy finishes on the same inkjet machine. Texture spray printing solutions open up even more applications and cost saving potential. With these types of solutions, the printed decorative pattern has a matching sprayed-on texture pattern, resulting in highly authentic visual and haptic finishes. The automation trend is just as strong in the spray coating sector as it is in other sectors of industry. Progress in spray coating technology is largely driven by small, low-cost, easy-to-program robots that boost competitiveness by enabling high reproducibility without compromising quality.

In the solid wood sector, oil finishes are very ‘in’ at present. Special roller oil coating machines have been developed especially for furniture, staircase and parquet manufacturers. The latest generation of these machines will be on show at Ligna 2019.

On the sanding front, diagonal sanding systems

and wood processing technologies. The show will feature comprehensive coverage of the latest surface finishing trends and

technologies, including haptic, matt and glossy surfaces, digital and decorative gravure printing solutions, print inspection systems,

spray coating systems and robotics applications. Themed ‘Smart Surface Technologies’, the surface finishing exhibits at Ligna 2019, will span the full

range of smart processing solutions for stunning surfaces.

“The R&D agenda in the surface technology arena is increasingly being set by a growing range of materials, new material mixes and the trend towards individualisation. It’s all about achieving greater flexibility while keeping costs to a minimum. Automation and digitisation are the most important factors in this context. At the upcoming Ligna, the exhibitors in Halls 16 and 17 and in parts of Hall 15 will present all the latest surface finishing technologies, applications, innovations and solutions,” said Christian Pfeiffer, Deutsche Messe’s Global Director for Ligna & Woodworking Events.

In the industrial sector, the trend is towards digital printing and variable systems. When it comes to lacquers and glues, environmental friendliness and resource efficiency are primary considerations. The lines between manufacturers and the skilled trades are becoming increasingly blurred as cabinetmaking and carpentry firms gain access to technologies that have previously been the exclusive preserve of much bigger companies.

Technological advancesAnother key factor driving this development is increasing market demand for highly authentic haptic surfaces, on both reconstituted and solid wood products, right across the furniture manufacturing and cabinetmaking sectors. Examples here include bronzed surfaces and rough-sawn finishes – challenges that call for highly specialised machines if they are to be mastered cost-effectively. Hence, in the industrial sector, digital printing solutions are gaining ground on their decorative gravure printing counterparts. In fact, thanks to recent advances, digital printing is now emerging as the more cost-effective alternative: “We believe that digital printing will generally cut production costs by over 10%,” said Dr. René Pankoke, CEO of Hymmen Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH.

In laminate flooring production, recent advances in digital printing technology have also enabled the production of highly authentic continuous decorative layers in hitherto impossible lengths. “With digital

capable of processing spray coated and veneered surfaces are currently at the forefront of technology. Automation is also big news here, with the advent of industrial robotic sanding machines capable of performing highly complex tasks that were once possible only by manual means.

Efficiency-boosting systemsEfficiency-boosting systems are also making big inroads into the adhesives sector. For instance, new adhesives containers now enable easy switching between all types of adhesives, including PUR adhesives. Major efficiency gains

are also becoming possible through the use of interfaces which fully integrate adhesive application systems into host systems.

Technologies that may still seem like distant visions to some are already a working reality to others. In the age of digitisation and integrated manufacturing, the timeframe for big developmental leaps is no longer measured in years, but in months. This makes a visit to Ligna all the more important for anyone wanting to keep abreast of the latest trends in wood processing and woodworking technology. When the show next opens its gates

in May 2019, it will feature many market-ready systems that are currently still on the drawing board.

Alongside ‘Smart Surface Technologies’, the focus themes at Ligna 2019 are ‘Integrated Woodworking –

Customised Solutions’ and ‘Access to Resources and Technology’, the latter being the keynote theme of the Wood Industry Summit.

FOCUS ON SMART SURFACE TECHNOLOGIES New ‘Commercial Department’ will support DHF’s continuing growth

DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has announced

the creation of a new Commercial Department, established to support the organisation’s ongoing growth, and in particular, its training offering. Marketing Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, has been promoted to the post of Commercial Manager, and will oversee the new department’s development, with an emphasis on streamlining training course booking processes and delivering the very best service and value to its members.

With responsibility for overseeing both marketing and training functions, Patricia, who has worked at DHF for three years, will be tasked with taking the trade association’s training department ‘to the next level’, including offering online booking facilities for all training courses and ensuring that new entrants into the industry are presented with the opportunity to become proficient with the necessary accreditations and qualifications, such as NVQ and CSCS cards.

DHF, established in 1897 and committed to raising standards, is renowned industry-wide as the ‘go to’ place for technical advice and training. Regarded as a ‘centre of excellence’ with an expert team of professionals that can provide help and support across all sectors, DHF’s distinguished training programmes provide delegates with a deeper understanding of legislation affecting supply, installation,

maintenance and repair. To date, more than 2,300 delegates have successfully completed one of its four training courses and earlier this month, DHF moved its head office premises to ‘The Barn’ at ‘Shuttington Fields Farm’, a larger office space with a state-of-the-art Training Academy, demonstrating its continued commitment to training.

“Training remains one of DHF’s biggest growth areas,” says Patricia. “The creation of a new Commercial Department will enable us to co-ordinate and restructure our training offering to ensure our programmes continue to provide both members and non-members with the support, technical expertise, information and knowledge they need to operate in their chosen sector, successfully and compliantly. Currently, DHF has four training courses on offer: the well-established two-day Diploma courses for Automated Gates and Industrial & Garage Doors; the one-day Industrial & Garage Door Certificate course; and now the recently-launched one-day Automated Gate Safety certificate course. Additionally, DHF will continue to work with BRE on the Fire Door Inspection training courses. I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to develop this department and look forward to a new and exciting chapter in DHF’s continuing expansion.”

“Patricia has more than proved her value as a key member of DHF’s senior management team; she was therefore the logical choice for taking the association’s training provision forward,” said DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry. “In a year that has seen tremendous growth and a move to improved office facilities, we look forward to the next stage for DHF and congratulate Patricia on her new position.”

New furniture edgings in the cutting-edge concrete look

You will find a wide choice of ABS edgings with concrete decors at

Ostermann. Due to the increased demand of the currently popular ‘industrial style’ surfaces, the wide range has once again been expanded. One example is the new ABS edging Light Grey Chicago Concrete. Concrete is not all the same – depending on the desired properties of the material, concrete differs in its precise composition, which affects the colour as well. Additionally, the structure of the concrete surface depends on the surface of the mould and the form of further processing. It is not without reason that board manufacturers now

offer so many different concrete decors. To meet this diversity of surfaces, Ostermann now supplies more than 20 different ABS edgings with a concrete look. New: ABS edging Light Grey Chicago Concrete One example out of the many new edgings is the Ostermann ABS edging Light Grey Chicago Concrete. It has been chosen by the Ostermann experts to match the Egger surface F 186 ST9 Light Grey Concrete Chicago, and is available in widths of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm, as well as in thicknesses of 1 and 2mm. For those who prefer darker concrete surfaces, there is also a variation available for

Norbord launches super-quiet flooring range

Norbord’s CaberFloor P5 – the UK’s most specified

chipboard flooring product – has been upgraded to produce a high performance floor with reduced impact and airborne noise transmission.

Called CaberAcoustic, the new product comprises 18mm or 22mm CaberFloor P5 chipboard with a 10mm acoustic felt layer permanently bonded to the underside.

Designed as a floating floor laid over an existing deck in either new-build or refurbishment applications, CaberAcoustic is installed with the tongue-and-groove joints glued with CaberFix D3 adhesive and all perimeters of the panel sealed with acoustic flanking strips.

When fitted to an existing floor in a conversion or refurbishment application, CaberAcoustic is overlaid onto the existing deck and a Hush Sound Absorber layer fitted between the joists with Hush Resilient Bars screw-fixed to the underside of the joists at 600mm centres. The

addition of two layers of 15mm Soundbloc plasterboard to the underside of the resilient bar and all perimeters sealed with an acoustic sealant prior to skimming,

ensures that the floor structure complies to UK Building Regulations Approved Document E for separating floor constructions in refurbishment and conversions.

In new-build applications, CaberAcoustic is laid in a similar manner (T&G joints glued and the perimeter sealed) over a 18mm or 22mm chipboard deck but a Hush-MF system should be applied to the underside of the joists to create a void of at least 150mm from the underside of the joists to the back of the plasterboard lining.

A double plasterboard layer comprising a 19mm plasterboard plank and 12.5mm Soundbloc completes the system. Both ceiling structures also provide one hour’s fire protection.

Norbord CaberAcoustic boards are 2,400mm long × 600mm wide and are available in 28mm and 32mm thicknesses with standard TG4 edge profiles. They come in packs of 40 (28mm) or 36 (32mm) sheets. For further information, call 01786 812 921 or visit www.norbord.co.uk.

Paint: quick drying & environmentally friendly?

How does a leading hardware supplier of more than 2,000 products ensure

they can provide an even better service to their customers? Perhaps by offering a brand-new quick dry paint which ticks all the boxes of the current ranges, but in a fraction of the time.

These were particularly attractive features when we consider the welfare of our 100+ team.”

Modifica QD completes the range of existing Mighton Ankerstuy paints, which includes Exterior, Interior and Specialist. As standard, each product boasts its own extensive colour range. Then, for projects requiring a rather more bespoke shade, all four paints provide a perfect base for the company’s ‘Exact Colour Match’ service. Beautiful shades full of vivacity are carefully blended in the Anker Stuy laboratory in the north Netherlands. Does your oval room need to be blue? Or perhaps you simply admire a peignoir…

Striking a balance Emile Stuy, Export Manager at Anker Stuy, tells us: “My family’s roots are in the industry of colour, right back to the late 1800s when we acquired an ink and paint factory. We understand how crucial it is not to compromise the energy of colour by becoming too infatuated with its technical performance, which is why we balance the two in our products.

Our paints are designed for ease of use by the craftsmen working with them, and for longevity to the end customer. In creating a microporous blend, for example, we enable the wood to breathe and live underneath the colour.”

To complement the environmentally friendly nature of Mighton Ankerstuy paints, the Modifica QD and Exterior ranges have been tested and proven for use on Accoya products. Accoya wood represents

sustainable, non-toxic manufacture of timber through a process called acetylation. The wood starts out life as plantation-grown softwood, and is then technologically modified to create a material that is guaranteed for up to 50 years.

The expectation is that once word of Modifica QD gets out, other specialists like MTF will want to use the prestigious range with their products.

Mike Derham, Chairman at Mighton Products, said: “The success that the partnership between ourselves and MTF has enjoyed is testament to the quality of paint we, and Anker Stuy, are able to provide. The professionals we supply are true artisans of their trade, and so it’s key that we listen to the challenges they are experiencing and find ways to overcome them. Modifica QD will undoubtedly increase productivity while supporting international business development.”

Mighton Products became the sole distributor of Anker Stuy Verven B.V. paints and stains in 2016, a move followed one year later with the creation of an exclusive partnership between the two companies. Now, in 2018, the newly re-branded Mighton Ankerstuy has launched Modifica Quick Dry – an industry paint that can be touch-dry and ready for re-coating in just 30 minutes, under the right conditions.

Craftsmen across the board will understand the benefits that paint with the qualities Modifica QD holds can bring to their work. Its scratch resistant,

Timcon to tackle high prices and packaging targets

The Timber Packaging & Pallet Confederation (Timcon) is

lobbying to tackle the unprecedented high price of UK wood packaging recovery notes (PRNs), which it says have serious implications for the industry. Speaking at the association’s AGM in Edinburgh last month, Angus Macpherson, Managing Director of The Environment Exchange, the marketplace for PRNs, explained that an increase in the UK wood recycling target had led to an all-time high in the price, and further target rises scheduled for the next two years would present “a significant challenge for the wood sector”.

Macpherson said that the current UK recycling targets for wood were based on the draft EU Circular Economy Package, which meant UK targets were increased to 38% this year and are due to rise to 43% and 48% in the next two years; while in the final EU Circular Economy Package wood-material-specific recycling and reuse targets are now lower, at 25% by 2025 and 30% by 2030.

“In the short term, Timcon may wish to address the pre-2020 targets,” he said, “otherwise, unless wood recycling issues outside their control change radically, every producer faces paying pretty large sums of money for the next three years.” He added that the industry’s discussions with Defra would be helped by collecting and communicating good quality data, something that Timcon is already doing well in the pallet and packaging sector.

During the AGM, which featured keynote speaker MSP Fergus Ewing, Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity, several presenters stressed the

importance of reliable industry data in achieving desirable outcomes when lobbying on critical issues.

In his address to the meeting, Timcon president John Dye said that production and recycling figures in the organisation’s annual report on the packaging and pallet industry are essential to its negotiations with Defra on the Packaging Producer Responsibility policy. This currently states it will require ‘packaging producers to fund the end of life costs of their packaging products and disposal costs of packaging’, a situation he said could have “serious implications for our members.”

“Meanwhile, the record high price of PRNs is placing a substantial and unexpected burden on the wooden pallet and packaging industry, including manufacturers, repairers and pallet poolers, as well as the sawmilling sector,” he said.

“As an industry association, we really do know our facts and figures, which gives us a much better chance of being listened to. Our recent work with Defra has confirmed this is most definitely the case,” he said. “Packaging waste targets and PRNs are where our focus will be in the coming weeks and months and we will be lobbying hard to ensure we get the best possible outcome for our industry.”

A steady, sustainable supplyFons Ceelaert, Secretary General of the European Federation of Wooden Pallet & Packaging Manufacturers (FEFPEB) underlined how important data from five European associations, including Timcon, has been in keeping members informed about rising timber prices across Europe in recent months. He added that FEFPEB

would be gathering its own statistics on pallets, lightweight and industry packaging with its own questionnaire, which will be issued once every two years.

FEFPEB played an active role liaising with the European Parliament on the revision of the packaging and packaging waste directive. He said: “FEFPEB did a lot of lobbying on this issue and we now have these minimum requirements for wood – and every country should be able to cope with that.”

Earlier in the meeting MSP Fergus Ewing talked about the importance to Scotland of the pallet and packaging sector,

which in 2015 made a £358 million contribution to the country’s economy and accounts for just over a third of the entire forestry sector. He added that the industry was “essential” to Scotland, and reiterated the Government had firm plans in place to provide a “steady, sustainable supply” of three million cubic metres of timber a year from the national forest estate. Consultation with the industry, he said, has led to action points that would help increase the quantity of timber available in various technical ways.

At the meeting there was also an update on developments in the UK from Confor while Mike Glennon, joint Managing Director of Glennon Bros, gave the meeting an update on the supply of Irish timber. Glennon

MSP Fergus Ewing addresses the Timcon AGM

From left to right: Timcon president John Dye, MSP Fergus Ewing and Timcon past president Gil Covey

described the key challenges affecting the sawmilling sector, which include a production overcapacity of approximately 500,000 cubic metres a year; mobilisation of the private estate in Ireland; increasing competition for wood fibre, particularly from the biomass sector; and the high price of logs, which in Ireland over the last five years have been 30% higher.

Deniss Pilcikovs of

pallet and paller collar producer Kronus also gave a presentation entitled ‘Timber packaging: Challenges and opportunities – a view from Europe’. This included a look at the issue of availability of sawn timber, which has recently been affected by challenges including forest fires and obstacles to sourcing wood from Russia.

Make fuss-free RTA assembly a reality

Cabinet hardware expert Titus has launched a new service dedicated

to helping manufacturers of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture make their products faster and easier to assemble, thereby enhancing customer perceptions and boosting sales.

The ground-breaking Titus CAF Service uses a simple formula, developed after painstaking research by Titus, to assign a Consumer Assembly Friendliness (CAF) score to items of furniture. This not only allows ease of assembly to be accurately quantified, but also

Making RTA furniture easier for end users

The CAF formula

reveals areas where improvements can be made, often at little or no cost to the furniture manufacturer.

“RTA furniture has a lot to recommend it, but it suffers from having a reputation for being difficult and time consuming to assemble, which undoubtedly holds back sales,” said Gary McMahon of Titus. “Our CAF Service has been specifically developed to help furniture manufacturers overcome this problem, thereby upgrading the public perception of RTA and allowing sales of them to grow to reach their full potential.”

The Titus CAF Score takes into account the total number of parts needed to assemble an item, the number of actions it takes to assemble the parts, and the number of different types of parts. Scores can be produced for complete

items of furniture, for sub-assemblies and even components themselves, allowing simplicity of assembly to be examined at every level.

The new Titus CAF Service will help furniture manufacturers to calculate the scores for their own products, or can even calculate scores on behalf of the manufacturer. In either case, the service will also provide detailed

recommendations for improvement.

A typical recommendation might be to replace a conventional dowel-and-cam connection with a single-part integrated connector. This would reduce the number of types of parts needed and also the number of actions needed to assemble the parts, so this small change would provide a

significant reduction in the CAF Score.

Titus is offering its new CAF Service to all manufacturers of RTA furniture, whether or not they are existing users of Titus products. Further information about the service, including a detailed explanation of the CAF scoring process, can be found on the company’s website: https://cabinet.titusplus.com/uk/en/caf.

Haynes Guitars

Neil Haynes, a cabinetmaker and musician, started Haynes Guitars

three years ago. With a love for woodworking and a passion for music, Neil combined the two and now manufactures his own guitar bodies and necks for other guitar makers from the UK and Europe.

At W14, Neil decided to take a massive leap and move his business to the next level, purchasing a CNC from the Felder Group and a Profit H08 from the FORMAT-4 range. “I have been making guitars by hand for 25 years,” says Neil. “I had no prior knowledge of CNC and thought that Felder would be the best fit for me. As a new customer to CNC, I knew I would need a lot of help and it has always been there. I did the training and learnt the basics, and from there everything else I needed I picked up via telephone support from the Felder Group UK staff.” Since then, Neil has purchased two more machines from Felder’s Hammer range: the A3-41 planer/thicknesser equipped with spiral-POWER silent cutterblock and the K3 basic panel saw. When talking about his machines, Neil said:

“With the CNC accuracy is key; it works really well with the Alphacam software and I can make up to five bodies at a time. It’s 100% accurate every time.” He went on to say: “I couldn’t go back to a normal cutterblock on my planer/thicknesser now that I have used the silent-POWER one; it is so quiet, so accurate and the blades are so easy to change. The sliding table saw is superb; it’s still very industrial and the sliding table makes the small machine very powerful.” He concluded: “I have used machines at a much higher price that are not as user friendly and not as good.” You can view Neil’s work at www.haynesguitars.co.uk and www.guitarandbassbuild.co.uk. Also, see how a range of machines from Felder can benefit your workshop at www.felder-group.co.uk or call 01908 635 000 to find out more.

BFC video demonstrates ongoing need for effective fire safety regs

The British Furniture Confederation (BFC) has produced a video, which

graphically demonstrates how consumers may be at risk from the sale of chairs, passed as safe, but likely to go up in flames.

The BFC commissioned

the video following new guidance from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) regarding motorised furniture.

BFC Chairman, Jonathan Hindle, said: “The upshot of this guidance appears to be that two items of motorised furniture could be offered for sale in the UK side by side and Trading Standards would not be able to take any action against the supplier, even though the product did not conform to the current Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations (FFFSR).”

CCG Manufacturing saves valuable time & resources with Multirail Auto installation

CCG Manufacturing Ltd is a leading manufacturer of timber windows

and doors and is a member of the CCG Group, one of Scotland’s largest privately-owned construction and manufacturing companies.

The firm operates out of two semi-automated facilities located at the Group headquarters in Cambuslang, Glasgow, capable of producing up to 20,000 units each per annum thanks to an innovative mix of technology and expert craftsmanship.

Operating across a series of CNC production lines, CCG Manufacturing offers a consistent, high-quality finish produced at a rate that is 50% faster than window and door products made by hand. However, as means of further improving time and resource efficiency, CCG Manufacturing looked to Runners Sliding Systems and the ‘Multirail Auto’, a bespoke overhead conveyor system with a 62m continuous loop, which was installed within the robotic paint spraying line of the factory.

The system has an operator panel at the beginning and end of the cycle, allowing staff to easily adjust speed and start/stop the process from either position. Timber frames and windows are loaded and then passed through

the automated system to the flow coater chamber where they are sprayed with wood preserver and then fully dried prior to being offloaded.

CCG Manufacturing Manager, John Paton, said: “Since its installation, the Multirail Auto has greatly assisted in improving the production process of our timber window and door products. In a busy factory, it was important to find the right product that could assist our team by achieving time savings and reducing man-handling on the factory floor.”

John added: “CCG will always look at where we can improve our manufacturing capabilities as we strive to deliver the highest quality product in the most efficient manner for our clients.”

Multirail is also available as a non-automated solution; these are often chosen by smaller operations across various sectors.

Daniel Wells, Sales Director at Runners Sliding Systems, commented: “We sell Multirail and Multirail Auto overhead track systems to a wide range of sectors, and our customers vary from small workshops to large factories. Multirail solutions are scalable to suit most space and production requirements.”

being subjected to a fire source equivalent to a burning match – with dramatically different results.

Jonathan continued: “The need for and effectiveness of the FFFSR is currently being questioned by a number of stakeholders but what prompted us to carry out this test was the fact we were informed that the Directive – which encompasses CE marking – covered all aspects of safety, including fire safety. It is therefore our understanding that a product that is CE marked in the EU, but outside the UK, can be CE marked as safe given it follows the guidelines within that country.”

BFC was concerned at this advice, fearing that it could undermine the UK’s safety regime and put the public at risk. It therefore commissioned a piece of research looking at the fire safety performance of an electric rise and recline chair that conforms to the FFFSR, and of an identical chair constructed in materials used in furniture construction in the EU.

The video graphically demonstrates the speed of escalation of fire on the non-compliant chair compared with the compliant one, after a flame source equivalent to a match was applied for 20 seconds. The flames on the compliant chair self-extinguished within a few seconds of the source being removed. The non-compliant chair was burnt to a cinder within 10 minutes.

The BFC has submitted this video to Kelly Tolhurst, MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility at BEIS, to demonstrate that the suggestion of the Directive and the FFFSR offering the same level of fire safety is not the case and urgently needs revisiting.

“Our main concern is to protect the public by maintaining high levels of fire safety in the home. We believe that this film does demonstrate the ongoing effectiveness

of the FFFSR in protecting the general public and that they need to be retained,” said Mr Hindle. “However, they are in urgent need of updating to reflect modern materials and manufacturing techniques and to ensure environmental concerns are met, we are urging government to engage in meaningful consultation as soon as possible.”

Trinity College maintains its campus with supplies from joinery specialist Quest

Trinity College in Oxford was founded in the 16th century as a

training house for priests. The site was originally chosen for its quiet, rural location. The college now, in the present day, sits very much in the city centre, but still enjoys a rural aspect through well maintained gardens within the grounds at the rear.

Trinity College has an onsite workshop, with seven people who maintain the buildings, including Maged Alyas, Workshop Supervisor, who has been working

at Trinity College for over 20 years. The onsite team work together to keep the historic buildings in immaculate condition, preserving them for the current 475 students and future generations.

The college buildings have 18 staircases in total; these are all conserved with repairs using wood finishing products. The main buildings are all listed, which means that all the windows need to be protected and not replaced, so the team must keep the timber windows in excellent condition and safeguard them from the elements

all year round. The team of seven in

the workshop includes a plumber, handy man, electrician, joiners and carpenters. Trinity College buys hardware supplies from Quest, a hardware and ironmongery supplier that specialises in supplying joiners with all the materials they need. Ordering can be done online, by calling the customer support team, or by placing the order with an area sales rep.

Maged Alyas commented: “I order our workshop consumables, ironmongery and power tools from Quest. Each

time I just make up an order from the items we are low on, I call Steve Hanson our sales guy at Quest or I call the office, and then it’s delivered the next day.”

There is a lodge at the front of the College that is not listed; this allowed the in-house joiner to hand-craft new timber windows in the workshop and used ironmongery, including non-locking window stays, Victorian screw down casement stays and fasteners from Quest.

Maged added: “Quest specialise in supplying companies that work with timber and often older properties. Quest stocks the range of products we need to complete our work and they also have specialist knowledge and experience that we can tap into if needed when placing orders.”

The Trinity College workshop also repair and preserve their furniture, keeping it in good condition using products from Quest that ensure the traditional interiors are conserved for future generations.

Daniel Wells, Sales Director at Quest, said: “It is an honour to supply such a prestigious College with hardware and joinery supplies. The workshop tradesmen are the

custodians of this historic landmark and work hard to preserve the Trinity College interior and exterior. The buildings are always immaculate and retain hundreds of years of rich history, which is shared with students, researchers, professors and tourists as a truly inspiring place to visit or study.”

Cut to the finish line faster with Mirka Iridium

Anew robust abrasive designed to cut faster and more efficiently

while repelling dust has recently been launched by Mirka UK. Aimed at bodyshops, workshops and industry, Iridium employs a new precision coating to speed up the sanding process. Iridium’s new multi-hole design and non-stick coating avoids loading or pilling from the dust that is created when the abrasive is in use, so the grains stay sharper for longer and the dust extraction is faster and more efficient. In addition, its blend of ceramic grains allows

the initial cut to be more aggressive and longer lasting, while producing a consistent scratch pattern for the lifetime of the abrasive. Available in both discs and strips, Iridium’s coarse and fine grits allow the abrasive to work well on both soft and hard surfaces, while its flexible backing also offers excellent grain adhesion and no loss of the grains, even when folded. Craig Daycock, Managing Director of Mirka UK, says: “Our customers want a user-friendly product that allows them to complete a job in the fastest possible time, while

BWF & BRE raise standards in fire safety

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and BRE (the

Building Research Establishment) have joined forces in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors and to help advance standards in their design, manufacture and installation.

Fire doors are the first line of defence against devastating fires and when properly built, installed and maintained, they save lives and protect property. Despite this, fire doors across the UK are still badly fitted, non-compliant, left propped open or damaged and, as a result, could be putting millions of lives at stake.

Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW) took place last month and continues to educate about the critical role fire doors play in delaying the spread of smoke and fire, and keeping occupants and firefighters safe.

BRE, which has over 95 years’ experience at the leading edge of building research and development, supported the campaign and the BWF by developing a series of emotive and educational fire door safety films. The films highlighted the potentially devastating effects of fire and smoke and the need to ensure that best practice and standards are followed throughout the industry.

Hannah Mansell, spokesperson for FDSW, as well as BWF Head of Technical Research and Insight, chair of the Passive Fire Protection Forum and a

trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust, says: “We’d like to thank BRE for its ongoing support, in allowing us to use its facilities for our filming. We are delighted to be working in collaboration with a cross-section of the industry, to raise awareness of these life-saving messages around fire door safety as well as working to help raise standards to ensure the safety of building occupants and firefighters.”

Debbie Smith, Managing Director at the BRE Global, said: “Fire safety within the design of a building is of critical importance and fire doors are an integral part of that. We at BRE are passionate about driving forward building safety and we are continually working with our stakeholders from across the built environment, such as the BWF and the Fire Door Alliance, to help improve technical knowledge and understanding to help deliver safer buildings for all.

“We fully support Fire Door Safety Week and encourage industry to get involved in helping to raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors and the need for improved industry standards and practice. The need for good installation and ongoing inspection and maintenance of fire doors is not well understood outside of the industry and this must change.”

Leveraging greater unity to support fire safety is paramount. The newly formed Fire Door Alliance sees companies certifying product under the BWF Certifire process

continuing unabated, while those currently using the Q-Mark scheme are now able to join the alliance and work with the wider sector to effect much needed change.

FDSW, a national campaign, is run by the BWF, the BWF-Certifire Scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme, in partnership with the Home Office’s National Fire Safety campaign.

Throughout the week, numerous events and campaign activities took place to raise awareness about the importance of fire door safety. To access a free toolkit of fire safety advice resources to help run your own FDSW activities, visit www.firedoorsafetyweek.co.uk.

The UK’s newest off-grid hideaway cabin built using Festool tools

Working in collaboration with UK Architecture

and Design Agency, New British Design (NBD), Festool tools have been used to help create an off-grid pop-up pub. The unique Cornwall-based project is now fully operational – powered solely through hydro and solar technology.

Working with nature to enhance what was already there, the low-impact cabin structure was created from a pared

down material palette of wood, tin and polycarbonate, using only locally sourced products.

It was important that the tools used were of the highest quality, designed with ease-of-use and safety in mind. Without the use of electricity in such a remote location, the project required equipment that was both mobile and efficient, and Festool provided the ideal solution.

The Festool drills used on the project, including the T18 and C18, benefit

from premium battery durability, which was perfect for the 12-hour work days onsite. They also feature brushless EC-TEC motor technology, making them light without compromising on power, which is perfect for users in any location.

“I’ve trialled all the professional grade tool brands over the years and Festool has consistently stood out as the best,” explained Ben Huggins, architect and designer founder of New British Design, who came up

with the highly innovative concept. “We needed to exploit the options available to us through the cordless range, beyond just drills and drivers. The unique cabin was an off-grid project, and therefore required an off-grid solution.”

A key tool for the project was Festool’s TSC 55 plunge cut saw. “Being able to accurately re-dimension timber sections on site proved invaluable, and there was little it couldn’t handle,” said Ben. With a powerful

5,200rpm and 2.2mm standard saw blade, the TSC 55 provided the necessary precision needed, while maintaining a powerful cutting capacity, and the quick acting brake and guide wedge provided essential safety to users.

Festool’s commitment to the heath of trade professionals was also demonstrated on site, with the new Eccentric Sander ETSC connected to a dust extractor to keep the working environment clear of harmful dust while the tool is in use. Dust extraction is an integral element of the Festool system, with all products ergonomically designed to work together

to provide a comfortable and efficient environ-ment, as well as a high-quality finish.

“The Festool range is made up of professional tools designed and built to deliver outstanding results,” concluded Ben. “With their unique value proposition of being the go-to premium tool brand, the decision of New British Design and other professionals to pay extra for quality and precision is well justified.”

For more information on Festool’s extensive range of products, see www.festool.co.uk, and to find out more about the off-grid pub, visit www.newbritishdesign.co.uk/off-grid-pub.
