BARCELONA

If you have an hour or two, go into town and visit its impressive monuments, typical restaurants &

bars and many stylish shops.

Tourism Gaudí

Casa Batlló Paseo de Gracia, 43

Open from Monday to Sunday, from 9.00h to 21.00h (last admission at 20.00h).

Ticket price for adults: 23.5€

The “Casa Batlló” (Batlló House) was built between 1904 and 1906 by Antoni Gaudí. It is one of the symbols of

Barcelona and also of modernism. Among other theories, it is said that the facade represents the legend of “Sant

Jordi” (Saint Jorge), the patron saint of Catalonia. The roof would be the dragon and the chimney the sward that

killed it.

The audio guided tour includes a visit through the hall, the first floor (where the Batlló family used to live), the attic

and the roof.

Casa Milà or “La Pedrera” Paseo de Gracia, 92

Open from Monday to Sunday from 9.00h to 20.30h (March-October) and from 9.00h to 18.30h (November-

February).

Ticket price for adults: 22€

Casa Milà is one of Gaudí’s best known buildings.

When it was built, public opinion condemned it as ugly, hence its other name of “La

Pedrera,” or Stone quarry. Now owned by a local savings bank, it has on the top the “Espai

Gaudí”, a Gaudí museum that explains in a very simple and interactive manner the genius

of this architect. It is highly recommended as an introduction to his work. One can also visit

the roof of the building where, apart from seeing Gaudi´s extraordinary chimneys, there is

also a spectacular view of Paseo de Gracia. Recently one of the apartments has been

opened and here one can get an idea of Gaudí’s concept of interior design. The Caixa

Catalunya Foundation also holds interesting temporary exhibitions to which entrance is

free.

Page 4: A FREE EVENING IN BARCELONA - events.efmdglobal.org · Sagrada Familia C/Marina with C/Provença ... Thursday open from 10.00h until 21.00h, Saturday from 10.00h until 20.00, Sunday

Palau Güell C/ Nou de la Rambla, 3-5

Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00h until 20.00h (April-October) and from 10.00h until 17.00h (November-

March)

Ticket price for adults: 12€

This mansion was commissioned by Count Eusebi de Güell, Gaudí’s main patron early on in his career as an architect.

It is an interesting example of both Gaudí’s earlier work and his vision of interior design. On the roof is a very good

example of his decorated chimneys. The palace can only be visited with a guided tour.

Sagrada Familia C/Marina with C/Provença

Open from Monday to Sunday from 9.00h until 20.00h (April-September), from 9.00h until 18.00h (November-

February) and from 9.00h to 19.00h (October and March)

Ticket price for adults: 15€-29€

Possibly the best known and most personal of Gaudí’s buildings, he even lived

there until a tram killed him in 1926. It is a building that either inspires awe or

horror, but never leaves anybody indifferent. George Orwell, who fought on

the republican side during the Civil War, thought that the fascists showed very

bad taste in not bombing it while they had the chance. This Cathedral is being

built purely on the basis of private donations. Construction continues and it is

calculated that the building will be completed in the Year 2057. It has two

complementing façades, one Gaudí and the other Subirachs, inspired by the

“La Pedrera” Chimneys. A visit to the crypt is worth it as one can see his plans,

drawings and one gets a good idea of how Gaudí calculated his constructions.

Worth taking the lift (or going up the stairs) for the view at the top.

Park Güell C/Olot, 7

Open from Monday until Sunday from 10.00h until 21.00h

Ticket price for adults: 8€ (strongly recommended to buy it online to avoid queues)

This Park, designed by Gaudí and named after his patron, is famous for the multi-colored salamander and the Mosaic

Pagoda, with organic pillars, as well as being a quiet green area with a nice view of the city.

If you are looking at the MNAC from the bottom of the hill, with Plaza España behind you, it is located on your right.

Originally built as the German contribution to the 1929 Exhibition, it was rebuilt for the Olympics and is a fine example

of Van der Rohe´s minimalist work.

Fundació Antoni Tàpies C/ Aragó, 255

Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00h until 19.00h

Ticket price for adults: 7.5€

Antoni Tàpies (1935-2012) is one of Spain’s best known artists from the 20th century. His foundation exhibits a

permanent collection of his work and exhibits very modern vanguard artists. Housed in one of Domènec i Montaner’s

first buildings, it was finished in 1880 and used as the printing press and offices of the publishing firm Montaner i

Simón. With a red brick façade, it can be easily distinguished by striking wire mesh on the rooftop. For contemporary

art fanatics and interior design lovers.

ENTERTAINMENT

Classical Music Gran Teatre del Liceu – Barcelona’s Opera House La Rambla, 51-59

This building, which claims to be the world’s oldest opera house, located on the Ramblas, burned down almost

completely a few years ago and was recently completely restored, with private funding. Together with the Palau de

la Música, it is the center of Barcelona’s musical life.

Palau de la Música – Concert Hall C/ Palau de la Música, 4-6

This concert hall is probably one of the best and most famous examples of modernist architecture. Designed by

though nowadays it holds a wider variety of concerts. There are concerts practically every night with the world’s best

conductors and musicians playing. They also hold concerts of jazz, flamenco, etc. Again, another icon of Barcelona’s

cultural life. Consult your hotel desk to find out what is playing.

Jazz & Blues

best known night-clubs.

Harlem Jazz Club C/ Comptessa de Sobradiel, 8

Located behind the town hall in the Gothic Quarter, this low-key venue holds concerts ranging from Tango, to Bossa

Nova or live story telling in addition to Jazz. Session times vary – ask your hotel desk for details.
