Preface

European & UK Sea Ports UTX is an on-going project as FlightSem Software (FSS) strife’s to further

improve the flight simulator experience of Microsoft Flight Simulator X by providing virtual pilots with

some degree of reality to the ‘virtual world’ in which they are flying.

The third volume of a series of enhanced European & UK Sea Ports UTX developed by FSS for Microsoft

Flight Simulator X, (Standard, Deluxe or Gold Editions) is Southampton Water X. Each volume in the

series requires Microsoft FSX Acceleration Expansion Pack (includes essential FSX Service Packs) if using Standard or Deluxe Editions of FSX – not required if running the Gold Edition of FSX.

Southampton Water X scenery requires Flight 1 Software Ultimate Terrain X (Europe) software

upgrade in order to function correctly. Flight 1 Ground Environment X (Europe) is optional but recommended.

Users are advised that this scenery will not work with FS2004 (FS9) or any of the earlier versions of

Microsoft Flight Simulator and should be aware that the scenery has only been tested with the Deluxe Edition of FSX, upgraded with FSX Acceleration Expansion Pack, Flight 1 UTX (Europe) and optional

GEX (Europe).

The software will perform best on an Intel i7 quad core CPU computer system. Off-the-shelf support

packages, such as ‘VFR Photographic Scenery-Generation X’ and similar commercial software

upgrades, have not been tested with this scenery and therefore might not be compatible or blend

seamlessly with this FlightSem Software Product. The scenery works fine with REX Essential Plus

Overdrive high definition environmental and weather software package.

**************************

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT **************************

THIS SCENERY WILL NOT DISPLAY CORRECTLY WITH MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR

X (Standard or Deluxe Editions) UNLESS THEY HAVE BEEN UPGRADED WITH MICROSOFT

'FSX ACCELERATION EXPANSION, (which includes SP1 & SP2 Service Packs. The Gold Edition

already incorporates these packs & FSX Acceleration Expansion) and FLIGHT 1 'ULTIMATE

TERRAIN X (Europe).

PLEASE NOTE that without relevant software upgrades, 3D-objects may appear in the sea, some of the coastlines

may become cliffs, and strips of landscape may appear in areas where there should be sea (visible also in the

default scenery of FSX) as well as possibly other peculiar & undesirable effects!

Exploring Southampton Waterway (UK)

outhampton (http://www.southampton.gov.uk) is considered to be one of the greenest cities in the UK. Situated on England’s South Coast, close to the New Forest, the City offers unparalleled choice

in shopping, entertainment, sailing, sport and leisure activities as well as offering a rich and varied

heritage, cultural attractions and beautiful parks. About 10 miles to the North of Southampton is Southampton International Airport (EGHI). The airport offers regular scheduled flights to and from

various leisure and business destinations including, Alicante, Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, Tenerife, Paris,

Amsterdam, and Brussels as well as providing some 200 or so other UK and worldwide connections.

The Port of Southampton is a major passenger and cargo port situated ten miles (16 km) inland,

between the convergence of the rivers Test and Itchen and the head of the mile wide inlet known as

Southampton Water 1. The mouth of the inlet is protected from the effects of foul weather by the

landmass of the Isle-of-Wight, providing the port with an advantageous sheltered location with close

proximity to good motorway and rail network links.

Owned and operated since 1982 by

Associated British Ports (ABP) 2,

the Port of Southampton is the

busiest cruise terminal and second

largest container port in the United Kingdom. It is a dynamic transport

hub and international maritime

gateway that operates 24/7,

handling one fifth of the UK’s international maritime trade for

exports and imports with EU and

Non-EU countries alike.

Statutory Boundary of Southampton Port 2 (Source: ABP © 2010)

The geographical area that is the boundary to the commercial Port of Southampton and ABP’s responsibility to the Harbour Authority for its statutory Port Health Services is shown above. The area

consists of Southampton Water, tidal elements of the Rivers Test and Itchen and parts of the East and

West Solent. Facilities, such as Exxon Refinery at Fawley, the BP Fuel Oil Farm & Terminal at Hamble and the Military Port at Marchwood, although not on land owned by ABP, are strategic facilities within

the wider ABP controlled Harbour Authority area.

Marchwood

In 1943 the little-known port of Marchwood in the UK was born on the far side of Southampton Water, its purpose to ferry equipment and aid in the D-Day assault on Normandy beaches in 1944. With the

coming of peace in 1945 a continuing military presence at Marchwood was needed to support the Army

overseas. Marchwood Military Port (MMP) or Marchwood Sea Mounting Centre (SMC) is situated on 289 acres of land on the western side of Southampton Water, opposite Southampton Docks. The port

came into its own once more in 1982 when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands. Once again the job

of loading all the equipment the troops would need for the fight ahead took place largely unnoticed at

Marchwood. It was so important to the war in the South Atlantic that the government upgraded the base after the conflict. Marchwood is also the base-port for several Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships.

The port consists of three main jetties. The largest (Falkland Jetty) is 169m long from the Ro/Ro Link

Span pontoon and 33m wide, it has had two dolphin

extensions added and is capable of accepting vessels

up to 203m LOA and 25,000 tonnes displacement. It has a sophisticated Ro/Ro Link Span Pontoon facility

capable of handling vessels with various ramp

configurations. The Link span is 100t class and the pontoons can be ballasted to a freeboard between 1-

3m.

Marchwood Military Port - 3 Main Jetties

The jetty also has two 32 tonnes Quayside Cranes

with Rotating Hook and Semi Automated Container Frames and railway access. Both Berths 3 and 4 on this Jetty are maintained at a depth of at least 8m above low water mark.

The second jetty (Mulberry Jetty), built during World War II, is 115 long from the Ro/Ro pontoon, has

rail access, has had a Dolphin extension and is capable of accepting vessels of up to 125m LOA and 8,000 tonnes displacement with limited Ro/Ro facilities. Both berths 1 and 2 on this Jetty are

maintained at a depth of at least 4m above low water mark.

Finally, there is a subsidiary jetty (Gunwharf Jetty) of 116m that is used to berth military landing craft

and smaller vessels. This Jetty is maintained at least 4m on Berth 5 and 3m on Berth 6. Adjacent to

Gunwharf is a minor ship repair facility equipped with a 225t boatlift.

In 2000 the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) was questioned as

to whether or not they would support the implementation of a

container port and access roads in Marchwood to improve security there, to which the MoD replied that they had no objections, and

the expansion has since been implemented.

Marchwood Recycling Incinerator Plant

The port is now used largely by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as a base

for their ships, including their amphibious ships, but it is also still employed for military cargo and personnel movement. The site is named McMullen Barracks and is operated by the MoD and provides a

military base for 17 Port and Maritime Regiment Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) whose role is to load and

discharge service or civilian shipping in support of military administration, exercises and operations

world wide. The site is the sole military port in the UK providing training for Army port and maritime

personnel. In October 2010, it was reported that the port was to be sold to a private operator but that no

firm decision has since been made regarding the future use of the port by the military. To the West of

the Military Port lies the modern Marchwood Recycling Incinerator Plant.

Weston Shore Highrise Buildings

Adjacent to Hythe and on the entrance to the river Itchen is the area of Weston Shore with its prominent High-rise Tower Block

Buildings, a prominent feature when approaching the Eastern

Docks of Southampton from the South or from the East along Southampton Waterway. Further along the river Itchen and

adjoining Weston Shore lies Woolston, originally home to Vickers

Armstrong Supermarine during the early 1930’s and home to the

late naval shipbuilders Vosper Thornycroft. The shipyard has now been run-down as part of the VT Group’s massive re-organizational

move to nearby Portsmouth, following the governmental contract to

build the new Type-45 destroyer in 2003. Weston Shore High-rise Tower Block Buildings

Luxury flats and penthouse suites have already been built in Ocean Village (Admirals Quay) and are

planned for this run-down area as well. Various fuel oil storage and sewage tanks situated along the banks of the river Itchen can be seen close by.

Hythe Pier

Before Hythe Pier was built, ferry and other boats arriving at

Hythe had to use a gravel hard ramp which ran from the land out to the low tide point in Southampton Water. Walking along the gravel

hard was not easy and travellers often got very wet. Various ideas

to improve the situation were suggested at the time and finally

construction of Hythe Pier was eventually started in October 1879 and officially opened on the 1

st January 1881. Many World War II

heroes departed from this pier on D-Day in June 1944.

Hythe Pier

The pier itself stretches some 640 meters into Southampton Water and is one of the ten longest piers in

the British Isles. In 1922 a narrow gauge electric railway opened in order to take passengers the full length of the Pier. This railway with its original engine and rolling stock is the oldest operating electric

pier train in the world and is still operational today playing an important part in the local transport

system to Southampton.

Hythe Marina Village

Hythe Marina was the first Marina Village to be built in the UK

and is one of the finest. Located on Southampton Water's Western shore it’s a unique development of a 206 berth marina,

together with waterside homes, shops, restaurants, bars and

boutique hotel. The marina entrance is controlled by lock gates, operated 24 hours a day throughout the year, which provides easy

access to Southampton Water and several of our other marinas

situated in and around the Solent. Hythe Marina Village

Hythe Marina Village has a boatyard within it, perfect for carrying out maintenance work or providing

help if a boat needs repair. There is boat lifting for vessels up to 40 tons, including an emergency boat

lifting facility, general cranage up to 8 tons and cradle hire for various boat types. All boat lifting at the yard is carried out by a professional, highly qualified team. There is storage ashore for over 160 boats,

including a secure compound for small boat storage – ideal for trailer sailors – as well as a slipway with

ample space for trailer and car storage. There are also various marine services on site. Cruising enthusiasts can explore the Beaulieu River to the West or continue on to the bustling town of Lymington

close to the New Forest. The other marina at Ocean Village in the Centre of Southampton is just a short

distance away by boat. In addition, a regular ferry service runs from Hythe Pier right into the Centre of Southampton.

RAF Hythe-American Base RAF Hythe was originally an RAF base situated in Hythe, Hampshire, 10 miles South of Southampton

on the Western side of Southampton Water and some 500 yards East of Hythe Pier and was acquired by

the South East England Development Agency in October 2007. It has since been developed into the Hythe Marine Park, home to a number of maritime and marine production facilities.

Hangars were first erected on the site acquired by Supermarine in 1925 by May-Harden-May Ltd, The site was used for final

assembly of marine aircraft and in the 1930s Vickers Supermarine

built flying boats at the base. The site again changed hands in

1937 to be acquired by Imperial Airways (later BOAC), who until November 1950 used the site for flying boat maintenance.

RAF (Hythe) American Base

From 1967 the facilities were used by the US Field Army Support

Brigade/Combat Equipment Battalion-Hythe mainly for small boat repairs. At this time, the base

became known as RAF (Hythe) American Base as it had been run by the American Army since the 1960s and was used to service and maintain watercraft. The station, the last U.S. Army installation in

the United Kingdom, closed on the 30th September 2006 after the American Army left following a cost-

cutting exercise. The site was acquired by the South East England Development Agency in October 2007 and has since been developed into the Hythe Marine Park, home to a number of maritime and

marine production facilities. Further along from the site lies the Hythe Sailing Club.

Netley Victoria Hospital Chapel

After the Crimean war, Queen Victoria ordered a Military Hospital to be built in the UK. Its purpose was to train army nurses and doctors and to treat military patients to ensure their swift return to duty.

Netley was chosen as the site because it was near to Southampton so that hospital ships from around the

British Empire could safely dock and disembark patients. For over 100 years the site was a great military hospital housing wounded troops of many nationalities from the 1914-1918 Great War.

In 1944, the hospital was taken over by United States Forces and 68,000 patients were treated over an eighteen month period. After the end of the war, the hospital continued to care for those returning from

overseas service, but the high cost of running the building eventually led to its closure in 1958. In June

1963, a serious fire, probably started by vandals in the now dilapidated building, badly damaged the

structure, and its fate was settled. In 1966 the bulldozers moved in. The psychiatric hospital remained open until 1978. In 1979 Hampshire County Council purchased the grounds and buildings. In May 1980

the Hospital grounds were opened to the public as the Royal Victoria Country Park.

Netley Victoria Hospital Chapel is all that remains of the massive

435m long three storey Royal Victoria Military Hospital, built on a

site purchased for £15,000 and founded by Queen Victoria in 1856.

The building was completed late at an over budget cost of £350,000 in 1863 (around £24 Million in today's money.) From

1966 the main hospital building was demolished and the site re-

opened to the general public as ‘The Royal Victoria Garden Park’. A miniature steam railway provides visitor with trips around the

park.

Netley Victoria Hospital Chapel

Today, all that remains are the remnant of the Netley Victoria Hospital Chapel building which is

clearly visible nestled in the 200 acre woodland and parkland area of the ‘Royal Victoria Country Park’ which lies between the Hamble River and Netley on the Northern shoreline of Southampton Water.

Netley Abbey & Walls

Netley Abbey, from which the village got its name, is the most

complete Cistercian monastery in Southern England. It originated when a colony of monks of the Cistercian Order crossed

Southampton Water from Beaulieu to establish a new religious

house at Netley in 1239. Founded by Peter des Roche, Bishop of

Winchester, and officially named St.Mary of Edwardsto (Sanctae Mariae de Loco Sancti Edwardi) the Abbey was under the

patronage of Henry III, whose name appears on the foundation

stone at the base of the North East crossing tower. It was probably built by the King's Mason, who also constructed Westminster Abbey.

Netley Abbey Ruins

Monastic life continued for three centuries at the Abbey, until its dissolution by Henry VIII in 1536

who granted the site of the Abbey to William Paulet, who converted it into a private residence destroying a lot of the original Abbey’s structure in the process. Around 1700 a new owner, William

Seymour, second Earl of Hertford, demolished and sold a lot of the stone fabric of the Abbey as

building material, leaving the ruin we have today. Some of this stone was actually used to re-build St.

Mary's Church in Southampton.

The Abbey Ruins are maintained as an ancient monument by English Heritage and are freely open to

the public throughout the year. On St. George's Day, guides & scouts from all over the region gather for

a parade & service within the grounds. Mass is celebrated annually in the ruins in honour of the Feast of

the Assumption of Our Lady. The plays of Shakespeare are also performed within the grounds on a regular basis. http://www.netleyabbey.info/ The nearby 13th century abbey Walls also lies in ruins.

Netley Castle

In early 1536 Netley Abbey was closed and King Henry VIII gave the land to Sir William Paulet of Basing House, 1st Marquis of

Winchester and Lord High Treasurer of England. In turn he was to

construct a castle which would become one of King Henry VIII’s Southern Coastal Forts to defend Southampton Water from a French

attack and possible invasion. Netley Castle was to be one of three

coastal castles to be constructed.

Netley Castle

The main castle was Calshot Castle, built on the Western shore at the end of Calshot Spit. This was to

be supported by St Andrew’s Castle, a smaller artillery castle, built at the mouth of the river Hamble and by Netley Castle, perfectly situated to this role being positioned between two of Hampshire’s

important rivers, the Itchen and the Hamble. Further along the coast, Hurst and Southsea Castles also

stood in defense. The castle is once again a private residential home but sadly is closed to the public, despite being visible from Southampton Water and accessible by land and sea.

Warsash BP Fuel Oil Farm

Clearly visible further along the northern shoreline from Netley and before reaching the river Hamble is

the small BP Fuel Oil Storage Farm at Warsash with its oil-transporting terminal jutting out into Southampton Water. On occasions oil-tankers can be seen moored alongside the terminal as they load

and off-load their cargo of fuel oil.

Hamble Sailing Club

The Hamble Sailing Club which is situated at the entrance of the Hamble River allows yachtsmen quick

and easy access to Southampton Water. The Hamble River is a yachting Mecca for yacht racing types. It

offers an interesting little village, Hamble le Rice, with various pubs and attractions for the visiting

yachtsman, and mooring options as far as the eye can see. Although on first sight it might appear that the Hamble River is nothing more than a giant parking lot for yachts and small craft, it is quite attractive in its

own right, especially if you have a boat without a mast as you can escape the crowds by making your way

under the fixed bridges into a different world.

The 1980’s TV series ‘Howards Way’ was based around here

and made the local Jolly Sailor pub famous. There is plenty of

deep water for average size boats, and just about every Marine requirement can be met here, with over 3,000 berths, five

marinas, a couple of boatyards with moorings, and the

harbour authority moorings. Hamble Sailing Club

In spite of the number of berths available it may still be

difficult to secure somewhere in the height of season as resident boats fill up the vast majority of the 3000 plus berths. This is not really a cruising area as the

River consists of a narrow navigable channel leading through the numerous moorings and marinas as

far as Bursledon Bridge. Anchoring is not allowed anywhere in the River up to the bridges and neither

is flying spinnakers. Its attraction mainly lies in its central location and proximity to the cruising and racing grounds of the Solent and beyond.

Fawley (Exxon) Oil Refinery

Fawley (Exxon) Oil Refinery site covers some 13 square kilometers (3,250 acre complex) and is situated on Southampton Water, some 5 miles by road from Hythe village in Hampshire (UK). On the

seaward side of the complex lie the salt marshes, whilst on the landward side an extensive tree screen

surrounds one of the biggest and most complex oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing sites in

Europe, namely, 'Esso Petroleum Company & ExxonMobile Chemical Limited’. The refinery imports crude oil from around the world, including the Middle East and Russia, although the majority of the

crude oil comes from the North Sea. The oil is off-loaded at the Refinery's Marine Terminal the

largest in Europe. Its mile long jetty handles some 2,500 ships movements a year.

About 85% of the fuel made at Fawley is transported via underground pipeline which was laid in 1962.

Prior to this, fuel was delivered by road, sea and rail. Esso Petroleum uses its own pipelines as well as

the mainline system, which is owned by a number of oil companies and operated by Esso. These transport petrol, diesel and jet fuel from Fawley Refinery to distribution terminals across the country,

including several airports. The pipelines are inspected regularly with the aid of ‘intelligent pigs’ devices

that travel inside the pipe, cleaning it and detecting dents as they go. It’s thought they are called ‘pigs’ because of the squealing noise they make as they travel along the pipe. Helicopters fly the route of the

pipelines every fortnight to monitor for excavations nearby; the avoidance of leaks is a priority.

The refinery stacks can be seen for miles around.

Thirty years ago there was a permanent flame over

Fawley - the 'Fawley Flame' - but is now a

comparatively rare event. The Refinery's flares are a normal and vital part of keeping the refinery running

safely and works in the same way as a home gas

heater - a pilot light burns constantly igniting any gas that is sent to a flare.

Fawley (Exxon) Oil Refinery & Marine Terminal

Steam is injected through the flare burners to ensure

complete smokeless combustion of the gases, black smoke appearing only when there is insufficient

steam available to inject into the flares. CCTV constantly monitors the flares so that the steam supply

can be adjusted as required to prevent smoke emissions.

Fawley Refinery Marine Terminal The processed refinery oil provides a wide range of fuels and other

petroleum products which are used by the adjacent 'ExxonMobile

Chemical Plant'. This plant produces over a million tonnes of

chemical products every year of which around 80% are exported by ship from the site's deep water Marine Terminal. Products are

shipped to ExxonMobil Chemical plants in Europe for further

processing or to third party customers all over the world.

Fawley (Exxon) Oil Refinery Marine Terminal

ExxonMobil has been a major investor in the UK's offshore oil and gas industry since the first exploration activities in the North Sea began in 1964. Further information about 'Esso Petroleum

Company & ExxonMobile Chemical Limited' can be obtained from their web site www.exxonmobil.co.uk

Fawley Power Station

Fawley Power Station is an oil-fired power station which

includes a huge turbine hall, a 198 meter (650ft) chimney and a circular control room. It is one of Hampshire’s biggest

industrial sites (occupying 300 acres) which have dominated

the entrance to Southampton Water for more than four decades. Located on the western shore of Southampton water the station

began operation in 1972 and ceased operating in March 2013.

Fawley Power Station

During this period, Fawley was one of the most efficient oil fired power stations in the UK with the

station having the capacity to generate 1,000MW of electricity for the National Grid System, enough

power to meet the needs of over 1 million households. Fawley operated as an opted out station under the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD). This meant it has 10,000 hours to operate between 1

st

January 2008 and 31st December 2015. Although the main units at this power station have closed as a

result of the LCPD, the station has retained 70 MW of existing open cycle gas turbine generation. In

June 2011 it was announced that investigations into the possibility of developing a new distillate oil-fired open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) plant at the Fawley site was being investigated. In the short-term

the site would continue to supply the National Grid and many of the buildings will remain, including

the chimney. A RWE nPower spokesman said Fawley had been chosen to be the control centre for many of the company’s open cycle gas turbines, including those at the power station itself and will

operate over 400MW of back-up electricity across the UK, providing additional support to the National

Grid.

In 2014 it was used by the film makers of the latest ‘Mission Impossible’ film staring Tom Cruise as

secret agent Ethan Hunt. The London base investment company, Long Harbour, has now bought the

power station and has made an application to redevelop the site for a mixed-use development, including

over 1,000 residential units, commercial space and an active leisure marina 3.

Calshot Spit & Castle Calshot Beach is a one-mile long sand and shingle bank

located on the southern bank of the open end of

Southampton Water on the south coast of England. From

Calshot there are spectacular views at night of Fawley Refinery and Power Station lit up. On a clear day the

Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth can be seen to the East

and the Hamble estuary to the North. Calshot’s unique position provides spectacular views across the shores of

the Solent and supports one of the countries most

popular watersport locations. Here visitors can involve themselves in a variety of land and water sport activities,

such as cycling, climbing, dinghy sailing, wind & kite

surfing, jet skiing, and canoeing. Calshot Spit

Calshot Spit with its Coastguard radar tower and mote Tutor Castle is situated at the mouth of

Southampton Water and marks the entrance to the Solent. The Spit is a navigation hazard for ships

entering Southampton Water, vessels being guided by the Calshot Spit Lightship anchored off the spit (Lightship was included in Southampton Port X scenery). The neck of the Spit is owned by New

Forest District Council while the end of the Spit is owned by the Crown Estate who leases it to

At the end of the spit is Calshot Castle, built by King Henry

VIII in 1540, an RNLI lifeboat, an NCI station, several

slipways, a former Royal Navy and Royal Air Force flying boat station and Calshot Activities Centre. The Castle is actually a

low, circular, stone structure and was armed with large muzzle-

loading guns. Its purpose, when it was built in 1539, was to protect access to the important harbour at Southampton from

seaborne attack by France or Spain from the English Channel

via the Solent.

In 1913 the Calshot Naval Air Station was set up and provided

a location for flying boat operations as its landing area was

sheltered by land on the three sides of Southampton Water and by the Isle of Wight several miles away on the fourth side.

Between 1929 and 1931 it provided a temporary base for the

enigmatic British scholar and aircraftsman T.E. Shaw (Lawrence of Arabia). Calshot was the also the venue for the

Jacques Schneider Maritime Trophy Air Races held in the

1920's (Schneider Trophy) - an international air race for

seaplanes. Lady Houston was instrumental in the funding of the 1931 RAF Schneider Trophy Team; the Houston House,

formally the officer’s mess at RAF Calshot during WW1,

carries a commemorate plaque in recognition of her work.

Luttrell's Tower is situated in Stanswood Bay at the southerly end of Calshot beach. The tower

was built around 1780 for Temple Simon Luttrell by Thomas Sandby, who was a founder member and

first Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy. Temple Luttrell, who was a Member of Parliament,

was allegedly involved in smuggling on the south coast (though no firm evidence of this exists) despite

Luttrell's Tower being used as a smugglers' haunt. Early radio experiments were also conducted by

Marconi in 1912 at Eaglehurst House (behind the Tower) and at the top of the Luttrell’s Tower

for transmission trials.

Product Features

n reality, cruise terminals, container docks, ships and ocean-going liners are normally very prominent

in the landscape when approaching holiday destinations from the air. This is not generally true with

the sea ports in Microsoft’s FSX. The default scenery of FSX frequently misses easily identifiable ‘true-to-life’ landmarks of well-known sea ports. In fact, many ports are often depicted as unrealistic

areas without a crane or ship in sight! Photorealistic scenery, such as VFR Photographic Scenery -

Generation X, on-the-other-hand although revealing ‘true to life’ landmark (including sea port) images does, more often than not, lacks any ‘3D-modelling and animated objects’. Even with Flight 1 Ultimate

Terrain X (Europe) and Ground Environment X (Europe) commercial software upgrades for FSX

installed, there is generally very little improvement around the sea ports.

In the design and development of this scenery, generic and custom made 3D-objects as well as digital

and satellite imagery and photo-realistic scenery of the surrounding landscape around Southampton

Waterway were used. Dusk and night lighting features were applied to most custom 3D-objects. Even

though Southampton Water X add-on scenery may not be absolutely ‘true-to-life’ in every detail, a

balance between reality and virtual non-reality features - which is lacking in the default scenery of FSX

- has been kept in mind throughout the various development stages. Good frame rates (fps), level of detail (LOD) and minimization of ‘draw-calls’ has also been kept in mind.

Although Southampton Water X is capable of standing on its own as a finished add-on

scenery product, the scenery is further enhanced by the addition of FlightSem Software’s

'European & UK Sea Ports Volume 2: The Port of Southampton X' - released in 2014. This

scenery, Volume 3: Southampton Water X, completes the statutory boundary of Southampton Port

X and includes various landscape features straddled along Southampton Water including, Western

Shore High-rise flats, Marchwood Military Port & Recycling Plant, Hythe Village Marina, Hythe Pier,

RAF (Hythe) American Base, Warsash BP Fuel Oil Farm & Terminal, Fawley Refinery & Terminal, Fawley Power Station and Calshot Spit amongst other features, thus providing the virtual pilot with an

extensive VFR landscape view when flying over the region.

Spinnaker Tower – The Spinnaker Tower is a prominent feature when entering the

Solent. The project was a £25 million joint UK Millennium Commission, Portsmouth City Council and Berkeley Festival Waterfront Company Limited sponsored project,

which ending up costing £36 million, including £11 million from Council Tax. The

tower was officially opened on the 18 th

October 2005 (5 years later than planned) and, as an international landmark, has now transformed the water front of Portsmouth

Harbour on the South Coast of England.

The Spinnaker Tower, which was originally designed by 'Scott Wilson Advanced Technology Group' at Basingstoke, Hampshire is a concrete, steel and composite

structure that rises 170 metres (560 feet) from the sea adjacent to Gunwharf Quays. It is constructed

upon a 3m thick pile cap and founded on 84 piles, and comprises two inclined slip-formed hexagonal concrete shafts 6m across, which merge into a single shaft at 70m. Two crossed bows, fabricated from

10.8m long & 1.5m wide structural steel box sections, rise from the ground, cross between the shafts at

35m and rise to connect with the shaft again at 120m.

Southampton Water X – Day & Dusk Views of Spinnaker Tower

The bow varies from 10-12m in depth at the base and top of the tower, reducing to 2.5m at the centre. A

grid of I-section steel beams span between the concrete tower, steel bows and frontal rib beams at each

level to support the thick 150mm concrete floor slabs. One shaft contains an internal express lift, the other shaft a panoramic external glass lift situated up the seaward face of the tower. The tower has three

high-level trapezoidal public viewing platforms that vary in size from 18m x 14m down to 12m x 4.7m

for the highest deck as well as Europe’s largest glass floor. The platforms are situated at heights of 100m, 105m and 110m and offer extensive views over Portsmouth Harbour, Gosport and the Solent.

Please note that the scenery includes only the Tower and Gunwharf Quays building.

was a village up to the 1950’s. But the growth of the nearby Fawley Refinery led to a demand for more

houses with the result that the village expanded into a small town. Hythe offers a range of public

services and ample parking. Centered on and around its Georgian High Street is a good range of shops, a public house,’ The Lord Nelson’, a Waitrose supermarket, as well as St.John’s Church, a fire station,

several charity and small independent shops, Lloyds Bank, Boots the Chemist as well as a nearby public

library.

The town’s sea front promenade boasts fantastic views across Southampton Water where the majestic

cruise liners can be seen entering and leaving the Port of Southampton. Hythe has a pier which operates the oldest working, narrow gauge, passenger pier train in the world for its half-hourly ferry service from

Hythe to the City of Southampton. Close by is Hythe Marina Village, with its moored yachts, boats and

large and expensive houses. The scenery includes only the northern side of Hythe Village with its range

of shops.

Known Issues

1. Generally, there is no loss of scenery detail with both UTX & GEX (Europe) software installed,

although it will depend on personal settings of FSX and the UTX Software Tool! However, there may

be a certain amount of loss in scenery detail if only UTX (Europe) software has been installed.

[Users may not be aware or indeed appreciate that with FSX scenery, there is actually little association

between Flash Earth and Google Earth’s 'real' world satellite co-ordinates and FSX’s scenery coast lines and 3D-Objects - FSX is poor in this respect, although FSX-Steam may have made corrections?]

2. On occasions, a small number of default AI-boat traffic may pass through scenery objects or become stranded on shore; this occurs more frequently with high traffic settings in FSX (a Microsoft ACES

Team boat traffic slipup). No attempt has been made to identify these AI-boats (which incidentally pass

also through objects in the default FSX scenery) or to exclude them from the default traffic file (not

advisable) or to modify their routes.

3. Customized AI-boat traffic may not always line up perfectly alongside pier terminals or vessels, but

berth nearby. On rare occasions, a boat may clip the shore line or docking ramp as it turns. AI-boats work well provided virtual pilots remember that if their virtual flight starts before the boat's departure

time, the boat will be facing in the direction in which it arrived at the berth/wharf. However, if the flight

is later than the boat's departure time, then the boat will have already departed and will be on-route to its destination.

4. A manual change in the world time can sometimes cause unexpected effects, including boats turning

partially between land-and-sea and the duplication of AI-objects. The later can usually be corrected if the world time is reset or by clicking ‘OK’ to the time shown in the world time menu. Traffic follows

GMT (Zulu) time. It is generally advisable to operate the flight simulator with the ‘system time’ box

ticked. (Go to Settings>General and then tick the ‘Use system time for free flight’ box) and allow the simulator to automatically take care of the AI-programmed events in the way they were intended!

5. (a) With Southampton Port X ‘Hythe Ferries’ were deliberately programmed to align close to the

shoreline - the Hythe Pier 3D-model was not included with that software product. However, with

Volume 2: Southampton Port X and Volume 3: Southampton Water X Products installed, ‘Hythe

Ferries’ will dock alongside Hythe Pier.

(b) On occasions, the Hythe Ferries on their return journeys to Southampton may turn clockwise

rather than anti-clockwise, thus passing through the docking structures. This effect does not prevent the

sailing of the ferries but does seem to be associated with certain times of the day.

Note: Users should be aware that not all boats (other than those stated above) will be visible with this

Scenery Product. (Hythe Ferries and additional AI-Ships and Boats will not appear in FSX with this

software product. To appreciate the full AI-Shipping affects, Volume 2: Southampton Port X is also required.)

6. If you already have Southampton Port X and sea vessels are stranded on-land it is probably due to

changes made to the default settings of Ultimate Terrain X. If you do not wish to ‘reset’ to the original

UTX settings, then the Ultimate Terrain X software ‘Setup Tool’ should be checked to ensure that the

‘Man-made Concrete Pier Coastline’ parameter is showing a width of 10 metres.

If the ‘Line Width’ is greater than 10 m then berthed sea vessels will appear stranded on dock quaysides

– as the ‘Line Width’ value approaches zero vessels are still likely to become stranded due to the ‘UT_Ocean Pier’ coastline becoming wider. Check the settings by first activate the UTX ‘Setup Tool’

and once all of the self-test have been completed follow the menu pathway

Advance > Modify Ultimate Terrain Feature Width > Coastline > UT_Ocean_Pier

Below ‘Description’, {Man-made Concrete Pier Coastline}, check that the ‘Line Width’ is set at ‘10’. If

not, then enter ‘10’ and ‘save’ the setting. Exit the software tool program. FSX or the computer system usually has to be re-booted before the changed settings are re-established.

The UTX ‘Man-made Concrete Pier Coastline’ parameter width is also 10 metres in the Southampton Water X scenery and should only be checked if a problem occurs.

7. Users might like at the same time to check the texture of their roads as some roads may show ‘flat,’ auto-imprinted, stationary vehicles at various distances along the roads. Such roads if not liked by the

user can be de-activated under the ‘Road Texture Surface Modification’ menu, a sub-menu of the

‘Terrain’ menu within the Ultimate Terrain X’s software ‘Setup Tool’. Simply disenable all or any

road surface in the ‘Add Auto Imprint (Urban Roads)’ boxes [•] displayed under the ‘Road Texture

Surface Modification’ menu. Click an empty box to re-activate its Auto Imprint surface.

8. If because of your FSX setup a ‘SimConnect Diagnostic’ window appears on running the scenery

then you may need to install Microsoft’s ‘SimConnect’ library files - the scenery will still run with the

‘Diagnostic’ window open. Under normal circumstances this will not be a problem to users.

Personal Note by Developer: The Port of Southampton scenery and it Waterway is not the

first serious attempt at trying to rectify some of the deficiencies seen in and around

Southampton (UK). The author’s earlier Southampton Project (Southampton & Regional

Area Scenery for FS2002 – FS2004) proved reasonably popular with flight simulator fans.

The scenery achieving a Star Performer and Internet Download Award in 2003 by PC Pilot Magazine (Issue 25 Nov-Dec 2003) for its Scenery Modules 1-5. For those who actually

downloaded the Modules, I hope you were pleased with the outcome. Trademark of PC Pilot Award ©

Now, after a personal lapse of more than six years in scenery enhancement and development, and under the umbrella of FlightSem Software House, I hope that the virtual flight experience can once more offer a more

‘realistic’ view of Southampton Port, Docks and Waterway.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT **************************

This scenery software product may not display correctly with the Standard & Deluxe Editions of

Microsoft Flight Simulator X unless they has been upgraded with Microsoft 'FSX Acceleration

Expansion Pack’ and Flight 1 'Ultimate Terrain X (Europe)'. Flight 1 'Ground Environment X

(Europe)' is optional, but recommended. The Gold Edition of FSX has the FSX Acceleration Pack and

sp1 & sp2 Service Packs included.

PLEASE NOTE: That without the stated software upgrades, 3D-objects may appear in the sea, some of the coastlines may become cliffs, and landscape may appear in areas where there should be sea (visible also in the

default scenery of FSX) as well as other peculiar & undesirable effects! If a ‘simconnect diagnostic’ window

appears on running the scenery then you may need to install Microsoft’s ‘simconnect’, although the

scenery will run with the ‘diagnostic’ window open.

Flight 1 Software Addon Updates

It is strongly recommended that the original version of UTX (Europe) is updated to version 1.4.0 dated

02/23/2010. The original version of GEX (Europe) should also be updated with the latest software

version from Flight 1 Software.

Flight 1 Software Addon Latest Updates

Flight 1 Software has released its latest updated (2015) version of GEX and (2013) version of

UTX.

GEX Europe Version 2.50 – Part of the GEX World System and UTX Europe, Update Version

1.5.0. The main ‘GEX Interface’ is currently version 2.4.0. Users should already have updated

GEX Europe to version 2.40 (2013) from the earlier 2.30 version, which introduced a new

umbrella ‘GEX Interface’.

2. Know your Pathway …

Installing Microsoft Flight Simulator X on a Windows XP operating system normally follows the

default pathway:

T

IMPORTANT: This scenery has been developed and tested only with the Deluxe Edition of

FSX, with FSX Acceleration Expansion Pack and UTX/GEX (Europe) upgrades. It has not

been tested with Standard or Gold Editions of FSX, although the product should work OK,

provided the Standard Edition of FSX has been upgraded with MSFS Service Packs SP1 & SP2

and/or FSX Acceleration Expansion Pack. Please be advised that the scenery will not work with

FS2004 (FS9) or with earlier versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator and generally will only

operate satisfactorily on high specification computer systems!

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

On a typical Windows 7, 64 bit O/S the default pathway would be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

The (x86) after Program Files separates 32-bit programs, like FSX, from 64-bit programs; 32-bit programs are in general installed into the “Program Files” folder not having the (x86) label.

For FSX: Steam Edition users, please be advised that the default installation pathway is different from

FSX. For further detail refer to FSX-Steam Version Q&A section in this document.

For example, if Microsoft Flight Simulator X has been installed into a folder named ‘FSX Deluxe’

on, say, the ‘E’ drive of your computer, the default pathway to the flight simulator would be:

E:\FSX Deluxe\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

3. Installing Southampton Water X Scenery …

An Installing Wizard allows you to select a different pathway to Microsoft Flight Simulator

X when installing Southampton Water X if the pathway is different from the default

pathway:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FlightSem Software\EPorts_UTX\ Southampton Water X

Southampton Water X scenery will be installed automatically into the appropriate folders of Microsoft

Flight Simulator X (via an Installing Wizard) on executing the ‘SotonwaterX.exe’ application file (30.9 MB).

(79.0 MB of disk space is needed for Southampton Water X scenery. An additional 38 MB of disk space

is required if the optional FSS ‘Animated Objects, Traffic & Additional Scenery’ files are installed as well. The mandatory Flight 1 UTX (Europe) requires another 183 MB or more if the optional GEX

(Europe) is installed as well – if you already have the Flight 1 UTX (Europe) you are good to go.)

Normally, to insure a successful software installation, and to prevent product run-time

problems, your Virus Checker and Account

Control should be temporally turned off and minimized respectively. You should of course

be ‘off-line’ before making these changes to

your system.

If you have not routinely set the Account

Control slider to a minimum setting (Never

notify) before installing new software, then you will be confronted with the ‘Account Control’

display page asking for your permission to

allow an unknown publisher to make changes to your computer. Click on ‘YES’ to continue

Page 36: A FlightSem Software Product European & UK Sea Ports UTX Water X.pdf · Exploring Southampton Waterway (UK) Marchwood Weston Shore Hythe Marina Village Hythe Pier RAF Hythe-American

with the installation. Your Virus Checker may also have to be disabled, although a successful

installation should normally take place without the Virus Checker being disabled. – If you do have to

changed the settings then please don’t forget to re-set them once the software has been installed. The Wizard will now guide you through the installation process. The first page displayed is the

‘FlightSem Software: Southampton Water X’ install page. Click on ‘NEXT’ to display an

‘Information’ page.

You are advised to read this page as it provides information regarding recommended computer

specifications to run this software product. If you are

confident that your computer system will meet the criteria

then click on ‘NEXT’ again to display the ‘License

Agreement’ page. If you agree, then activate the ‘I agree

with the above terms and conditions’ button and click on

‘NEXT’ to continue with the installation.

The Wizard will now display an important ‘Directory’

page that will inform you that Southampton Water X

files will be installed via the Windows XP O/S default pathway:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FlightSem Software\EPorts_UTX\ Southampton Water X

Very Important - All of FlightSem Software Products are installed to a designated home folder

{FlightSem Software} in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. To install an FSS Product, the Wizard’s

displayed pathway must be changed to reflect the correct pathway to the designated FSS home folder.

Using the example given in 2 above, it would be necessary before continuing with the installation to

change the pathway shown in the Wizard’s ‘Directory’ page to:

E:\FSX Deluxe\FlightSem Software\EPorts_UTX\ Southampton Water X

↑ ↑ Changed default pathway Do not change this part of the pathway

The Wizard will then inform you that ‘This destination directory doesn’t exist’. Do you want to create it?’ Click the ‘Yes’ button. If other EPorts_UTX scenery exists it will still show this message

and on execution, Southampton Water X will be installed alongside the existing sceneries.

A ‘Confirmation Screen’ will now appear informing you that ‘You are now ready to install

Southampton Water X’. Click on ‘Start’ and follow the Wizard’s instructions.

If the installation is successful the Wizard will notify you that ‘Southampton Water X has been

successfully installed’.

4. Optional - Animated Objects, Traffic & Scenery …

Following the instructions below is optional, but if followed it allows you to install additional animated

Page 37: A FlightSem Software Product European & UK Sea Ports UTX Water X.pdf · Exploring Southampton Waterway (UK) Marchwood Weston Shore Hythe Marina Village Hythe Pier RAF Hythe-American

scenery effects associated with Southampton Water X – Recommended. If, however, you do not wish

to install these objects then be advised that you will not observe the arrival, berthing and departing of

any AI-shipping movements and any other effects associated with Southampton Water X.

The five required application files associated with scenery effects can be found in the SimObjects and

Additional Scenery folders of the extracted ‘sotonwaterx.zip’ zip file and involves execution of the

application files listed in Parts (i) to (iv) below.

(i) Installing SimObjects Execute the ‘AI-SimObjects.exe’ application file (4.92 MB) to activate an Installing Wizard which will

install into the ‘SimObjects’ folder of Microsoft Flight Simulator X all of the ‘AI-boat traffic’ operating

in the Southampton Waterway area as well as the required ‘Sound’ files via the default pathway:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

In our illustrated example, this would mean changing the default pathway displayed by the Wizard to

E:\FSX Deluxe

↑ Changed default pathway

Note: If installing the SimObjects manually, the complete boat folders (not the files) as well as the

sound files must be placed into their relevant directory folders of FSX.

(ii) Installing AI-Traffic

Execute the ‘AI-Traffic.exe’ application file (1 MB) to activate an Installing Wizard which will copy all of the ‘traffic{xxx}.bgl’ files into the correct scenery folder of Flight Simulator X using the default

pathway:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\World\Scenery

As stated earlier, if Microsoft Flight Simulator X has been installed into a folder named ‘FSX Deluxe’

on, say, the ‘E’ drive of your computer, you would change the displayed Wizard’s pathway to

E:\FSX Deluxe\Scenery\World\Scenery

↑ ↑ Changed default pathway Do not change this part of the pathway

(iii) Installing Special Effects

Execute the ‘Sotonwater_Effects.exe’ application file (1.73 MB). The Installing Wizard will inform you that it will install ‘Southampton Water X Special Effects’ using the default pathway

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects

The Wizard will allow you select a different pathway if it is different from the default one. As stated

earlier, if Microsoft Flight Simulator X has been installed into a folder named ‘FSX Deluxe’ on, say,

the ‘E’ drive of your computer, you would change the default pathway shown by the Wizard to:

Page 38: A FlightSem Software Product European & UK Sea Ports UTX Water X.pdf · Exploring Southampton Waterway (UK) Marchwood Weston Shore Hythe Marina Village Hythe Pier RAF Hythe-American

- 38 -

European & UK Sea Ports UTX – Volume 3: Southampton Water X. © Barrie Semmens: FlightSem Software 2013-16 All Rights Reserved

E:\FSX Deluxe\Effects

↑ ↑ Changed default pathway Do not change this part of the pathway

If asked if you wish to overwrite any of the files answer ‘Yes’ even if you already have these files on your system. All special effect files will be installed into the correct folder of FSX.

(iv) Additional Rendered Port Scenery

This is an optional choice which allows you to update three ports visited by the AI-Oil Tankers. The 3

ports are LeHarve in France, Puente Mayorga in Spain and Port Said in Egypt. Rendition of these ports is minimal but introduces missing (but limited) refinery flavours to the default scenery. The rendition is

compatible with Flight 1’s GEX Africa & Middle East (World Edition) commercial software scenery.

Execute the ‘Addports.exe’ application file (2 MB) found in the Additional Scenery folder. The Installing Wizard will inform you that it will install ‘Southampton Water X Addports’ using the default

pathway

E:\FSX Deluxe\Addon Scenery

↑ ↑ Changed default pathway Do not change this part of the pathway

These additional scenery files are not copied into the FSS default folder but into the ‘Addon Scenery’ folder of FSX. This allows the user to easily switch on/off the scenery files as required.

Database registration is still necessary with priority being above that of UTX/GEX scenery.

Go to contents page Return to Q & A Page

Database Registration

nce the scenery has been installed you will need to activate the World Scenery Library to register and update the Microsoft Flight Simulator X database. The database configuration file is updated by

starting Flight Simulator X after the computer has been re-booted or restarted. (The database

‘scenery.cfg’ file will be automatically updated. (c.f *Note below)

Next, select

SETTINGS > Scenery Library

From the FSX start-up page navigate to the FlightSem Software folder and select EPorts_UTX and

then Southampton Water X. Click the OK button and then place the cursor anywhere inside the clear

screen page area and click the left mouse button again (Windows programming quirk of FSX) to update

the Scenery Library Database.

Alternatively, while in virtual flight, select the FSX menu bar (top screen bar) and navigate to

World > Scenery Library > Add Area > FlightSem Software > EPorts_UTX > Southampton Water X

Click on the ‘OK’ button and then place the cursor anywhere inside the clear screen page area and click the left mouse button. The Scenery Library Database will be automatically updated.

Important

1. It is possible that cold-booting the system after the Product has been installed may give an ‘error

message’ stating that ‘it can’t find the …\FlightSem Software\EPorts_UTX\Southampton Water X pathway’. This is because your simulator is searching for the software in the ‘… \Addon Scenery’

folder of FSX. Simply continue and once the simulator is up-and-running navigate and select the correct

pathway stated here.

2. After installing Southampton Water X add-on scenery you may not at first see the scenery! If this is

the case don’t worry. Simple go to the FSX menu bar and navigate and select:

Scenery Library > Add Area > FlightSem Software > EPorts_UTX > Southampton Water X

Click on the ‘OK’ button and then place the cursor anywhere inside the clear screen page area and then click the left mouse button. The Scenery Library Database will be updated.

3. Once the Database has been updated you can move the ‘Southampton Water X’ scenery, if you wish, down to a lower priority - the database will set the scenery by default to ‘Priority 1’. However,

the scenery priority MUST be such that it is above ALL of the upgraded ‘UT Europe Scenery Area’

priorities in the ‘Scenery Library’ of FSX. If however you move the ‘Southampton Water X’ scenery

below all of the ‘UT Europe Scenery Area’ priorities, then some of the scenery detail may be loss due to higher priority being given to the UT Europe landmass, etc.

4. The following will not normally apply to Southampton Water X and can be ignored. However, if you find that sea vessels are stranded in-land, or are berthed far from the dockland, then Ultimate Terrain

X’s software ‘Setup Tool’ should be checked to ensure that the ‘Man-made Concrete Pier Coastline’

parameter is showing a width of 10 meters (default). If the Line Width is not equal to 10 m then sea vessels may/will appear stranded – this is especially noticeable as the ‘Line Width’ value approaches

zero or is increases above 10 m!

To check this parameter, first activate the UTX ‘Setup Tool’ and once all of the self-test have been completed follow the pathway

Advance > Modify Ultimate Terrain Feature Width > Coastline > UT_Ocean_Pier

Below the ‘Description’ {Man-made Concrete Pier Coastline} check that the ‘Line Width’ is set at ‘10’.

If not enter ‘10’ and save the setting. Exit the UTX Setup software tool program.

due to a BUG in

FSX!

Of course the compromise in all display settings is a fast, smooth, response speed verses quality and

quantity of the viewed environment for a given computer system.

Each of us will eventually choose display settings which is a trade-off between these and other

configuration factors. Remember that FSX is about smoothness of flight, irrespective of the number of

frames-per-second (FPS) rate. Although FSX is a 3D-render application it is a simulator, and not a game, constantly calculating real-time changes rather than using pre-defined game controls and maps!

The possible combinations of terrain, water, etc., settings with the Flight 1 Ultimate Terrain X

(Europe) Software Tool are far too numerous to discuss here and therefore must be left as a personal choice of the user. As such, FSS can give no guarantee that a particular terrain setup with the UTX

Software Tool will result in a FSS Product, including this product, behaving as it was originally

intended to do! The scenery works fine with REX Essential Plus Overdrive software.

Nevertheless, the FSX settings shown below may be a good starting point for a smooth flight by virtual

pilots and will show them how FSX settings affects UTX performance.

Monitor Display

lightSem Software scenery has been designed and developed with the recommended minimum

monitor hardware setting of 1280 x 768 x 32 pixel resolution in mind. The choice of monitor(s) is

of course a personal one.

An FSS scenery product will display perfectly well on a single monitor, but for users who have multiple

screen setups they will be pleased to know that an FSS product will function well with a Matrox

TH2Go triple screen setup (3 x 1280 x 768). However, there is no obvious reason why an FSS scenery

product should not work satisfactorily with either lower or higher screen resolutions or with single or

multiple screen displays.

However, if you use a wide screen aspect ratio monitor you will need to ensure that under the display

header in the simulator's configuration file (fsx.CFG) that the Boolean code line WideViewAspect

reads True. If it reads False then change it to True and save the file. (If this line of code is not there

then insert it!)

[DISPLAY]

WideViewAspect=True

To do this correctly you will need to edit the 'hidden' fsx.CFG file and not the fsx.CFG file under the FSX folder, which changes each time FSX is executed and closed! To accomplish this task follow the

steps below

1 Open Windows Explorer

2 Select Tools > Folder options ... > View.

3 Under Hidden files & folders highlight the 'show hidden files, folders & drives' button 4 Click on 'Apply' then on 'OK'.

Next, in Windows Explorer, navigate to the FSX folder as follows

C: > Users > {Your user name} > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > FSX

From the list of folders & files in the FSX folder find the fsx.CFG file and edit it in Notepad

(double right mouse click). Find the [DISPLAY] header in the fsx.CFG file and check/correct

the WideViewAspect line of code to show WideViewAspect=True.

If you wish to hide the folders and files again then follow steps 1-4 above ensuring that in step 3 you

select ‘hide hidden folders, file & drives’. Go to contents page

under the Monitor Display section. (Note: If running ‘REX Essential plus Overdrive’ software the

‘Texture_Max_Load=1024’ value should reflect your own system settings, e.g. 512 or 1024, and for HD resolution 2048 or 4096.)

If you wish to disable the pre-loading files for the default flight and thus launching FSX faster from the desktop, insert the following line of code under the [MAIN] header of the fsx.CFG file

[MAIN]

DisablePreload=1

Don’t forget that if you use a wide screen aspect ratio monitor ensure that under the [DISPLAY] header

in the configuration file (fsx.CFG) that the Boolean code line WideViewAspect reads True.

If it reads False then change it to True. If this line of code is not there then insert it and save the file!

DirectX

icrosoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal

platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements, such as full-colour

graphics, video, 3D animation and rich audio. DirectX includes security and performance updates,

along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs. Microsoft Flight Simulator X was originally designed around DirectX 9.0c.

Unfortunately DirectX 10 was planned only for Microsoft's Vista operating system. The architectural changes meant that the current generation would not be able to supply the performance gains that

DirectX 10 made possible. Vista will run quite well on current generation Graphics Subsystem (GSS) in

DirectX 9 'compatibility mode', but if you want to enjoy dramatic effects and possible performance gains, you cannot avoid investing in a DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 compatible GSS.

DirectX 11 is the platform used behind the development of FSS scenery products. For that reason it is

recommended that DirectX 11 is used. However, there is no known reason why either DirectX 10 or DirectX 9.0c should not be used and function equally as well - but with less 'graphic goody' effects. It

does nevertheless pay to keep DirectX updated to the latest version as it likely contains enhancements

and maybe also some performance gains that could benefit graphic-intensive applications like FSX. Go to contents page

Uninstalling the Product

o completely uninstall the scenery simply execute the ‘uninstal.exe’ application file ( KB) found in the ‘Southampton Water X’ folder of FSX.

Alternatively, in Windows go into ‘uninstall a program’ (start > Control Panel > Add or Remove

program) select ‘Southampton Water X’ from the list and click on ‘change/remove’ button to

uninstall the program.

Either method will uninstall ‘Southampton Water X’ and leave the ‘FlightSem Software\EPorts_UTX’ subfolders in tack. Other Volumes in the European & UK Ports Series (if any) will not be removed.

Important Notes:

1. If you wish to un-installed manually then just delete the ‘Southampton Water X’ folder. Do not

delete the ‘FlightSem Software\EPorts_UTX’ subfolders. If you do, then any other installed volumes in

the ‘European & UK Ports Series’ will also be removed from the flight simulator.

2. If you simply wish to de-register it from the simulator’s database then navigate to the simulator’s top

menu bar, click on World > Scenery Library and then on the ‘delete’ box. Alternatively, simply un-tick (√) the box along side ‘Southampton Water X’. This will allow you to reactivate the scenery at a

later date (re-establish the tick √) without having to undertake a complete reinstallation of the Product.

3. You will need to manually remove the added Southampton traffic files in the

‘…Scenery\World\Scenery’ folder if you do not wish to see the AI-Traffic as the installed AI-Traffic

objects will remain visible and operate in FSX according to their pre-designed schedules, despite ‘Southampton Water X’ scenery having being removed, i.e. the AI-traffic will appear in the default

scenery of FSX. [Each Southampton Water traffic file will need to be identified among the files having

a ‘traffic{xxxxx}.bgl’ format, e.g. ‘trafficwarsash’ ]

4. The boats in the ‘… SimObjects\Boats’ folder of FSX can remain without causing a problem,

provided the relative AI-Traffic files have been removed. (Note 3)

Question & Answers

Q1. What is FlightSem Software?

A1. FlightSem Software (FSS) is an acronym for 'Flight Scenery Enhanced Modular Software' and is a software

house that develops add-on software for Microsoft’s FSX Flight Simulator.

Go to contents page

Q2. Is there anything special about FSS?

A2. No. The General Aims and Objectives of FlightSem Software, like other software houses, is to improve the

flight simulator experience by providing virtual pilots with some degree of reality to the ‘Virtual World’ in which

they are flying. However, FSS software is special in that it is specifically designed to reflect landscape and

maritime features of Southampton & the Isle-of-Wight in the United Kingdom.

Go to contents page

Q3. Does this mean that FSS will only develop scenery for Southampton & the Isle-of-Wight in the UK?

A3. No. Third party scenery software (mainly free) is displayed and available to download from the FSS website,

but restricted to the area speciality stated in answer A2 above. This type of software is generally reviewed and

kept up to date at regular intervals. (flightsemsoftware.co.uk)

Go to contents page

Q4. Is FSS Software Products compatible with all versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Page 48: A FlightSem Software Product European & UK Sea Ports UTX Water X.pdf · Exploring Southampton Waterway (UK) Marchwood Weston Shore Hythe Marina Village Hythe Pier RAF Hythe-American

- 48 -

A4. Generally, Yes. However, see FSX-Steam Version. FSS Add-on Scenery is compatible with Microsoft Flight

Simulator X (MSFSX) provided the simulator has been updated with the essential MS Service Packs:

FS Version: Flight Simulator X (Standard, Deluxe or Gold Editions. (FSX Stream has not been tested.)

FS Service Pack(s): MS FSX SP1 & SP2 Service Packs (Not required with Acceleration Expansion Pack or

Gold Edition of FSX)

FS Expansion Pack: Flight Simulator X Acceleration Expansion Pack (Includes SP1 & SP2 Service Packs)

In addition, other commercial FS Scenery products may be required with some FSS Scenery products:-

FS Upgrade: Flight 1 Software Ultimate Terrain X-Europe (Recommended for better landscape views) FS Upgrade: Flight 1 Software Ground Environment X-Europe (Recommended with UTX)

Go to contents page

Q5. Can I purchase a FSS Software Product direct from FSS’s website (flightsemsoftware.co.uk)?

A5. No. At present all purchases of FSS Products are through the FlightSim Pilot Shop (fspilotshop.com).

Potential buyers should contact this website if they wish to view and/or obtain an FSS Product.

Go to contents page

Q6. Are there any freeware Software Products that can be download from the FSS website?

A6. Yes. Although at present all purchases of FSS Products are through the FlightSim Pilot Shop (fspilotshop)

there are a limited number of earlier freeware products available to download from the FlightSim website

(www.flightsim.com) under the development author's surname, but relate mainly to FS2002/2004 scenery.

Go to contents page

Q7. Will MS Flight Simulator X work with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10?

A7. Yes because Windows 10 as well as Windows 8.1 both have the same core architecture as Windows 7

architecture and as a result Windows based flight simulator software and add-ons should be fully compatible with

these versions of Windows.

Go to contents page

Q8. If I upgrade to Windows 10, will I need to reinstall my Flight Simulator software?

A8. If you install the current Windows 10, via the upgrade route, then all your products will remain installed and

useable in Windows 10 and there will be no need to reinstall them.

If, however, you re-format your hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 10, then you will need to reinstall FSX and all of your flight simulator add-ons products. Because Windows 10 is a new O/S there are still issues!

Go to contents page

Q9. What are the benefits of FSX: Steam Edition over FSX (Gold)?

A9. There are rumors that FSX Steam Edition is an upgraded and improved

version of the final release of the original Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

This couldn't be further from the truth in some respects. FSX: Steam Edition is the same product as FSX (Gold

and Acceleration) but heavily ‘tweaked’. So at the moment there is probably no real benefit in purchasing this

product. In fact, it may be considered as a backward step as it is incompatible with most add-ons released for

Microsoft FSX due to different registry entries that the product installs on your PC.

Page 49: A FlightSem Software Product European & UK Sea Ports UTX Water X.pdf · Exploring Southampton Waterway (UK) Marchwood Weston Shore Hythe Marina Village Hythe Pier RAF Hythe-American

However, on the positive side, despite generally having slower FSX boot-up times, a better flight experience -

especially when flying between high density cities notorious for producing the dreaded OOM screen message -

has been claimed. In addition, the Steam Edition also features ‘enhanced multiplayer functionality’, has

Windows 8.1 and above support and over 24,000 airports. Developer, Dovetail Games of ‘Train Simulator’

fame, plans to spruce the package up with DLC. In time, FSX: Steam Edition may very well surpass the original

FSX product from Microsoft and support the numerous add-ons released, but for the moment ….?

Go to contents page Return to Q4

Q10. Should I purchase FSX: Steam Edition?

A10. This is really a personal choice. With FSX: Steam Edition you will (at present) all most certainly lose

compatibility of many of the flight simulator add-ons accumulated and costing you many pounds or dollars over

the years. However, a number of vendors are upgrading their add-ons to recognize and install into FSX: Steam

Edition. But not all vendors for at present they represent only a fraction of the numerous add-ons products

available to the flight simmer. For maximum compatibility and an optimal flight simulator experience, it may be good advise to stick with the original FSX you are using at the moment since currently there is little or no

significant performance benefit or feature upgrades and enhancements with FSX: Steam.

Go to contents page Return to Q4

Q11. Will FSS Software Products work with FSX: Steam Edition?

A11. Yes, they should do. Provided you enter the correct navigational pathway when asked about where the

scenery files should be installed during the installation process, the FSS Product should install OK.

With Microsoft Flight Simulator X the default pathway for a Window XP operating system is usually

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

On a typical Windows 7, 64 bit O/S the default pathway will be displayed as

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

With FSX: Steam Edition neither default pathway will apply.

For a 64-bit O/S the default pathway for installing FSX: Steam Edition is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX

For a 32-bit O/S the default pathway is

C:\Program Files\ Steam\steamapps\common\FSX
