Joe Shead for once again coming thru with great food. As I said that evening, I’m looking forward to this journey. Working to-gether, I believe we can serve more people than ever before in the District.

Following the theme of communication and shared leadership, we need to hear from any and all Lions abut the topics you’d like to discuss at the October District Meeting. We cannot stress enough how much we want to hear your ideas, concerns and comments. Nothing you send will be considered frivolous. So, Presidents and Secretaries, get this to your people as this is the District’s membership opportunity to express themselves and participate in the District’s direction. This is your District. Let us share its leadership with you by taking an active part in where we are to go.

We intend to make the Lions Pledge a part of our various meet-ings this year. PDG Bill Uhrig started this tradition at the Ben Davis Lions Club a few years ago. May I suggest you consider doing this as part of your club’s opening ceremonies at each of your meetings. You don’t have to do this of course, but it really does add something nice to your meetings and reminds us all why we became Lions.

Finally, we want to take this opportunity to congratulate Lion Dottie Flack and the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center for achieving the federal government’s most pres-tigious designation: Comprehensive Cancer Center. This is the highest level of recognition awarded by the National Cancer Institute for research excellence. The Center is the only Com-prehensive Cancer Center in Indiana; only the 51st in the nation; and the first in the Midwest in a decade. Our District and the entire state benefits by having this Center located here. We also greatly benefit from the outstanding service that our own Lion Dottie provides at the Center and to the many people who expe-rience her caring attitude when they work with her. everywhere.

Why Do We Serve? 1st VDG Ken Faulkner

Three months into the Lion’s year already, Wow. The State Fair is over, the Washington Twp. Lions Corn Stand is over; everything is put away till next year. I hope everyone got a chance to volunteer and help serve our Foundation.

Have you ever asked yourself, why do I serve? I fully be-lieve there are many reasons to serve with the first being to love our world and make it a better place for all who dwell on it. And while you may not think that your serving locally in your community makes a difference, it does. And be-sides, it must start somewhere, so why not start locally. Here is an example, you may be doing vision screening on that first grader who can barely see. Because of you, his

parents take her to get glasses and for the first time in her life, she can see the chalk board. Now here is the ripple effect… because she can see the board, her grades im-prove, she becomes an “A” student and becomes more confident. Now she is a senior in high school and because of all this she becomes class president and valedictorian. This earns her a Scholarship to an Ivy league school and graduates with honors. Later in life she becomes a politi-cian and then President of the United States. I know this is quite the tale & It has not become truth yet, but it started with you because you decided to serve.

Is that why “YOU” serve? And when YOU serve what is your motivation, because it does matter. Our compassion for our fellow man compels our hearts to serve. That is one reason I serve, as I have compassion for our fellow man no matter where they reside. I say that because I feel that just because we are Indiana Lions, our service doesn’t stop at the Indiana border. I promise what you do, does make a difference. So, what is your motivation to serve?

When I decided to serve, I saw a need. The Clermont Li-ons Club had a Skinny Santa and we all know that Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly. Once that need was ful-filled, I continued this path to serve more. More in the Club, more in Clermont, more in the District 25F Lions and more in the Indiana State Lions. I hope you are doing the same as we need some new Lions to step up and lead.

Speaking of Leaders, how many of you have a Facebook account & follow our own District Governor’s Facebook page? Or how about the Council Chair’s FB page? Many of our State Projects have page and there is even a Lions Clubs Help & Support Page (group) that deals with a lot of the same things that we have problems with and can assist you a multitude of things.

Finally, what do you need from your Leadership Team? Let us know.

We were all put on this earth for a reason, I am sure, I was put here to be not only a Lion but a good neighbor to my community.

Ken Faulkner, 1st Vice District Governor, District 25 F

Every Body Counts PCC Reed Fish

If you attended Banner night then you know what this means and from who I am quoting. If not, let me give a short review. Mike Kirschner, former coach of the Ben Da-vis High School (Indianapolis) football team, was the key-note speaker and the subject was leadership in life. Regard-less if it concerns business, football or Lions - every body counts. Coach “K” recounted how he learned that whether he had 40 kids on a team or 220, each player played a role and contributed in one way or another on the success of the team. This is true with our clubs and it has never been more meaningful. Clubs are as busy as ever with local projects and fund raisers and usually can use all the help that is avail-able to make it run and grow. Even though there may be a member that may have limitations that won’t allow them to stand for a couple of hours or have computer skills to assist with making flyers for more publicity - try to take advantage of what strengths they do have that will contribute to the needed work. This keeps every body involved with the club and activities – remember they joined to serve. There have been a few surveys done in the past asking why former members left their clubs – one of the most frequent answers was that they did not get includ-ed in the projects; did not feel like they or the club was providing the service that they thought would be done when they joined or that they were outside the “cliques” of the club. Often times this is unintentional – perhaps it might seem like it is easier just to have the same people do the same jobs or that you don’t want to bother the member to help with this project. Break that habit and “bother them” – you might find that they want to assist with all the work! Remember – EVERY BODY counts!

USA / Canada Forum PCC Reed Fish

The Forum this year is from September 19th – 21st in Spo-kane, Washington. Registrations can still be made online. The USA / Canada Forum is the premium leadership train-ing opportunity offered to our membership – they will have over 70 seminars covering a wide variety of subjects that can help both in Lions and business activities. If you are unable to attend this one due to location watch for more information on next year’s Forum that will be held in Louisville Kentucky. Almost within walking distance to some of our southern clubs ( OK I might be exaggerating a little ) it will truly be the closest site to District F ever. PCC Reed Fish District Leadership Chair

Smoke Signals from Camp Woodsmoke CC RonBigham

I apologize for not getting an article turned in for the Au-gust newsletter. Here is what has been and is going on from the start of the Lion year.

Saturday, July 13 was Organizational Day for District 25-F. It was a beautiful day though it was getting quite warm in the afternoon and I am sure everyone was pleased with the new air conditioning units in the dining to make the after-noon more comfortable.

Paul and Betty Bowling were each presented with a W.P. Woods Fellowship in recognition for their involvement in the care and maintenance of Camp Woodsmoke over the last 3 years. Thank you Paul and Betty for your diligence in keeping the camp in tip top shape. Fellow Lions, be sure to thank them for everything they do for our Camp.

Soon, work will begin on the Lion Dave Carter Memorial Fire Ring that will be at the east end of the Shelter House. This is a tribute to Lion Dave who had passed away last year and had served several years as the Chairperson for the Camp. Lion Dave truly loved the Camp and its mission.

Pork Chop Sunday will be held on Sunday, September 29 from 11:30 to 4:00 pm. There will be a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 11:00 am. If you have an American Flag that is worn and tattered and not being flown anymore, you are welcome to bring your flag. This will be held at the Lion Dave Carter fire ring near the shelter house. Also if a Lion would like to participate in the preparation and serving of dinners on Pork Chop Sunday, please contact one of the Trustees to let them know. We always appreciate the help.

The Trustees have set the Fall Clean Up Day for Saturday, November 16. There will be work for everyone no matter what your physical limitations would be. In the Spring, we had 30 Lions members and 32 Iron Order members in at-tendance. So much work was done with so many workers. Plan to come out in Autumn and let’s have a large turnout of Lions for this project along with other volunteers who help keep Camp Woodsmoke “The Best”.

If your Club is interested in having one of our Trustees come and make a presentation, please give us a call. Infor-mation can be found in the Club Officers District directory.

If you would be interested in serving as a Trustee, please contact one of our Trustees to let us know of your interest.

If you have not visited Camp Woodsmoke “The Best” in the last couple of years, make plans to go and visit this jewel of District 25F. Be proud of what we have at this camp and thank you for supporting such a fantastic project. Let’s not keep it a secret. Get the word out.

CC Ron Bigham, CW Trustee

Centerville Lions Man Golf Booth During Annual Archway Days Members of the Centerville Lions Club set up a Golf Booth at the annual Archway Days near the Centerville park. The event was held August 23-24 and the club usually man a booth or project during the celebra-tion. Big crowds attended and there was plenty of food and snacks available. The Centerville Lions Club will celebrate their 75th anniversary this fall. Lions members Joe Elstro and Ty Farmer chaired the booth this year.

As our good friend “Cowboy Bob” PCC Booher would say: It’s Fall Roundup Time!! Yes, it’s time to get out there and ROUND UP all the new Lions we want to build our great clubs! It’s time for our Fall Membership Recruitment Drive! When: September 1 through October 31st

Goal: 100 new members logged into MyLCI by 10/31 We have 61 clubs – if each club added just one, we are 2/3 of

the way to our goal. How are we going to do this? Wear Your Lions Pin EVERYWHERE! I wear mine everyday – it’s called getting the brand

recognition out there. We know we need more Lions and young Lions too! Find new member prospects at fundraisers, fall festivals, news articles, TV news, Facebook, wher-

ever you meet people! Invite them to service projects and evenings out. Refer prospects to your club GMT if you’re not comfortable making the approach. YOU don’t have

to do it all, WE all must do it!!! Tell them that you think they are doing great and have they ever considered being a Lion? You

may get their permission to ask them to be a Lion quicker than you think! Especially Genera-tion X (40-54) – How do I know? Because that’s me!

Follow up on your contacts with a message inviting them to talk more about being a Lion if they

want to hear more, later.

Make the ask. “So, would you like to be a Lion with us?” is a great suggestive ask. Fill out the paperwork and get their check or cash. Working on a way to use cards.

If they say, “not right now”. Club GMTs – here’s your prospect list to keep updated, use to

personally invite to your events and follow-up with them later. Hold a recruiting drive, we can help you with ideas, staffing and materials – contact me.

POST YOUR SUCCESS. Welcome your new members on your club Facebook page and website

with photos and their permission. Their example will bring their friends and family! Send pic-tures to the newsletter and Hoosier Lion! See our Facebook District 25F Recruiting Forum page for new updates too!

Make them your newest recruiter. Once sworn in, ask them who else they would like to bring

along to the party! For more information, support, and materials, contact PDG Melissa Baker Membership Chair at (812) 621-8486 or [email protected] COULD ADDING A BRANCH TO YOUR CLUB HELP YOU RECRUIT YOUNGER LIONS?

Take a hard look at your clubs: let’s be honest with each other – Is there a clique or two in your club that might be ‘getting in the way’ of the club? Could folding in a “mini-club” allow the addition of some new energy, ideas and personalities? A good way to include new ways of doing things while having more members along with the “old” …Remember one is silver (new) but the other is still pure GOLD!

Are you finding that your club is serving less due to an aging membership, and you are not having success at re-cruiting younger Lions? As you attempt to recruit, are you hearing “I want to serve, but I don’t want to join a tradi-tional club” or “I don’t have time for meetings or to serve as an officer”. Perhaps it might be time to consider form-ing a branch. A branch is a group of Lions within your club, that operate as a “mini-club”. They rely upon your club’s infrastructure to manage the administrative functions, so they are free to serve with few club duties. They choose their own meeting times, tra-ditions and projects and set their own dues. They may decide to be a cyber branch, thereby eliminating the need for physical

Page 6: A Few Things · 13th is the Fountain City Fall Festival from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. September 15th is Brian’s Trike Race. September 16th is official visit at Pike. September 20

meetings. Therefore, your club can continue meeting and operating as it has, but you can also recruit Lions that can meet and serve as they desire. Your club benefits because it continues to serve and grow. The branch Lions are full members of your club, and can step up to leadership roles in the club and beyond. This is an excellent way for a legacy club that may be finding it difficult to continue to do service projects to expand its mem-bership and serve in new areas. A branch could be started with a group of Lions that cannot regularly attend your meet-ings due to work. Other opportunities could be groups of people who want to work on one specific project, and would benefit from the Lions name, insurance, image/brand and non-profit status. Partnerships with churches, civic groups, neighborhood organizations, schools, parents, etc., are perfect places to seek out small groups to recruit as separate branches. This could also be a company that wants to support their employees serving and sponsors them to join your club as a group.

How about a young mother’s branch that meets at playtime and one person watches the kids while

the others do a service project. A group of parents that support their kid’s sports team or band and

need to raise funds and cover insurance. The branch can also recruit new Lions on their own, thereby

expanding your service footprint further. The opportunities are only limited by your imagination. Re-

member, these are not strangers that you are supporting, these are your Lions doing your Lions ser-

vice under your club’s name.

Organization is simple, your club board approves the concept, you find a person/s to form the group, you join the Lions to your club in MyLCI and then establish the branch in MyLCI and identify a minimum of 5 Lions as members of the branch in MyLCI. A branch liaison is appointed, a president of the branch is elected, and you are up and rolling. Want to see one in action? If you have Facebook go here: https://www.facebook.com/STLCWESERVE/?hc_location=ufi

Not on Facebook? No worries, you can still look at their information here: https://e-clubhouse.org/sites/southtucson/index.php?fbclid=IwAR3grG1IQpAW2gaSP7rrJgggJqJVPY88klXwAEVgRTKfYfKJ1mdPMp79uk0. Scary stuff you say? So is the thought of having Lions disappear from more of our communities! So, saddle up my Lions friends – we got ourselves a roundup to get to!

June 25 – 29, 2021: Montreal, Quebec: Known as ‘Canada’s Cultural Capital’, Quebec’s largest city is like no other in North America! Behind Paris, Montreal is the 2nd largest French-speaking city in the world and truly a foodie’s para-dise. While the underground pedestrian network is impressive with over 2,000 shops covering 18 miles, the 9 miles of shops lining the famous Sainte-Catherine Street has been the pride of Montreal for over a century. Explore Montreal, Notre-Dame Basilica , Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Olympic Stadium are just a few sight. If nature is your escape, 343 acres of green space in Mount Royal Park offers the best views of this cosmopolitan city. Montreal has so much more to offer. So encourage your clubs to put on their thinking cap on and start designing.

Pins MUST include:

a-MD 25 Indiana (as text) b-the Intl Convention year - 2021 c-Lion Club Intl Logo d-Intl Convention Host City representation e-MD 25 graphic resprentation

MD-25 usually includes a race car and/or the outline of Indiana. Each club can submit one design to its District Gov-ernor. One design will be selected by each District Governor. All District designs need to be submitted to me by De-cember 15, 2019. Each District's selected design will be presented to State Council in January.

Remember: pin designers do not have to be (a) Lions

Be creative! CT Patricia Bigham, State Pin Chairperson
