Childcare is available across the courtyard in the Parish House nursery. Please silence all cell phones. If you are visiting with us, please fill out a welcome card and place it in the offering plate so that we may send you information about the mission and ministry of this congregation. If you have any questions or need assistance, please speak with an usher.

n 1880, the Bishop of Truro, the Rt. Rev. F. W. Benson, devised a “little service of nine lessons and carols” for Christmas Eve at Truro Cathedral (U.K.). The intent was to trace the history of human salvation through readings from Holy Scripture

interspersed with carols and hymns of the season. Bishop Benson went on to become the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the “little service” he envisioned has become a tradition in cathedrals, churches, and collegiate chapels around the world – due in large part to the annual live broadcast from King’s College, Cambridge, that began in 1928. This is our 11th year to offer this service annually at Christ Church. We are grateful to the members of the local community who are joining us tonight as readers. The music is a mix of familiar and unfamiliar, new and old – each telling an important part of the story. Please sing along spiritedly with the hymns, as your voice is just as important as the voices in the choir in tonight’s musical offering. We are especially pleased to be singing the premiere of a new anthem by Philip Moore. Mr. Moore served for many years as Organist and Head of Choristers at York Minster (U.K.) His music is known internationally. In 2016, the Archbishop of Canterbury awarded him the Cranmer Award for Worship “for his contribution to the English choral tradition as a composer, arranger and performer.” For the past several years we have donated our financial offering from this service to our Kids of Note initiative. We are pleased to share that our first high school graduate of this program, Jonathan Amaya, is now a freshman at James Madison University. Jonathan was selected to be a JMU Centennial Scholar, an honor which awarded him a full four-year scholarship. He is the first person in his family to attend college. Jonathan is studying to become an engineer and is a proud member of the JMU Marching Royal Dukes. As we continue our Advent journey, may our prayer be to once again “go with heart and mind unto Bethlehem,” and be prepared to welcome the Prince of Peace. May God bless you and those you love this Advent season.

Please remain seated as the choir processes and sings: Creator of the stars of night, thy people’s everlasting light, O Christ, Redeemer of us all, we pray Thee, hear us when we call. In sorrow that the ancient curse should doom to death a universe, Thou came’st O Savior, to set free thine own in glorious liberty. When this old world drew on t’ward night, thou came’st, but not in splendor bright,

not as a monarch, but the child of Mary, blameless mother mild. At Thy great Name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend all hearts must bow: all things on earth with one accord like those in heav’n shall call Thee Lord. Come in Thy holy might, we pray, redeem us for eternal day;

defend us while we dwell below from all assaults of our dread foe. The People stand. To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One;

praise honor, might, and glory be from age to age eternally. The Bidding Prayer Dear People of God: In this season of Advent, it is our responsibility and joy to prepare ourselves to hear once more the message of the Angels, to go to Bethlehem and see the Son of God lying in a manger. Let us hear and heed in Holy Scripture the story of God’s loving purpose from the time of our rebellion against him until the glorious redemption brought to us by his holy Child Jesus, and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of this whole world, for peace and justice on earth, for the unity and mission of the Church for which he died, and especially for God’s Church in our country and in this city. And because God particularly loves them, let us remember the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed, the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and those who feel unloved, the aged and little children, as well as all those who do not know and love the Lord Jesus Christ.

Page 4: A Festal Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

4

Finally, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that whole multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in Jesus, we are one for evermore. And now, let us pray in the words which Christ himself has taught us, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and to the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen.

First Lesson………………….………………………………………………………………..…..………Genesis 3 A Chorister

They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the LORD God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’

Second Lesson……………………………………………………………………………………………….Isaiah 40

The Rector of Meade Memorial Episcopal Church, Alexandria Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.’ A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Carol

Prepare a way for the Lord! Get ready, get ready, he’s coming soon!

We light the Advent candles, we light them one by one; We light the Advent candles, for God’s own Son.

We light the Advent candles and then we join to say, “Make room in your hearts for Jesus who comes on Christmas Day!”

Music and Lyrics: Michael Bedford (b. 1949)

Third Lesson……………………………………………….…………………….…..…………………..…Isaiah 9

A Member of Kids of Note The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onwards and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Fourth Lesson………………………………………………………………………………..……………..Isaiah 11

The Head of School at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School, Alexandria A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Carol

I look from afar, and behold, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth.

Go ye out to meet him, and say: Tell us, if thou art he, who shall reign over the people of Israel.

All ye inhabiters of the earth, and ye children of men, rich and poor, one with another, go ye out to meet him, and say: Hear, O thou shepherd of Israel: thou that leadest Joseph like a flock. Tell if thou art he.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in who shall reign over the people of Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Text: Advent Responsory, adapted from Coverdale

Music: Anthony Piccolo (b. 1946)

Fifth Lesson……………………………………………………………………………………………………John 1

A Lazarus Food Pantry Volunteer

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ He said, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,“Make straight the way of the Lord,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said.

Sixth Lesson……………………………………………….…………………………………………….……...Luke 1

The President and CEO of The Campagna Center In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her. Carol

Little lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?

Gave thee life, and bid thee feed by the streams and o’er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing, wooly bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice!

Little lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?

Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee, Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee!

He is called by thy name, For He calls Himself a Lamb: He is meek and He is mild; He became a little child. I a child and thou a lamb, We are called by His name.

Little lamb, God bless thee. Little lamb, God bless thee.

Seventh Lesson……………………………………………………………………………………………...…Luke 2 A Member of the Alexandria City Council

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The offering taken at this time will benefit a program at Christ Church entitled Kids of Note. We value the importance of arts education for all students. Working with local teachers, we have identified promising young students for whom music is a passion. However, without additional support they may not have the ability to

continue their music studies while pursuing their dream of becoming First Generation college students. Through this program, we are providing encouragement, mentorship, college application assistance, and continued support once their college

aspirations come true. If you are writing a check, please make it payable to Christ Church and indicate Kids of Note in the memo line. You may also text the amount you would like to give to 703-457-8889 with the word “music” to donate to Kids of

Note. You will receive instructions in response on registering your credit card. Thank you for your generosity – your gift will help to transform lives!

Carol All earth is hopeful, the Savior comes at last! Furrows lie open for God’s creative task: This, the labor of people who stuggle to see how God’s truth and justice set everybody free. People of Israel, you heard the prophet tell: “A virgin mother will bear Emmanuel,” She conceived him, “God with us,” our brother, Whose birth restores hope and courage to children of this earth. Mountains and valleys will have to be prepared; New highways opened, new protocols declared. Almost here! God is nearing, in beauty and grace! All clear every gateway, in haste, come out in haste! We first saw Jesus a baby in a crib. This same Lord Jesus today has come to live In our world; he is present, in neighbors we see How our Jesus is with us and ever sets us free.

Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of Stephen, when the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even. Brightly shown the moon that night, though the frost was cruel, when a poor man came in sight, gathering winter fuel. “Hither, page, and stand by me. If thou know’st it telling: Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?” “Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain, right against the forest fence, by Saint Agnes’ fountain.” “Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither. Thou and I will see him dine when we bear them thither.” Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went together, through the rude wind's wild lament and the bitter weather. “Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger. Fails my heart, I know not how. I can go no longer.” “Mark my footsteps, good my page, tread thou in them boldly: Thou shalt find the winter's rage freeze thy blood less coldly.” In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted. Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing, ye who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.

Eighth Lesson……………………………..……………………………………………………………...Hebrews 1 A Member of the U.S. House of Representatives

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have begotten you?’ Or again, ‘I will be his Father, and he will be my Son?’ And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’ Of the angels he says, ‘He makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire.’ But of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever, and the righteous sceptre is the sceptre of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.’ And, ‘In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like clothing; like a cloak you will roll them up, and like clothing they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never end.’

Carol In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow. In the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heav’n cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; Heav’n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Enough for him, whom Cherubim, worship night and day, A breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay; Enough for him, whom Angels fall down before, The ox and ass and camel which adore. Angels and Archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and Seraphim thronged the air: But only his mother in her maiden bliss, Worshipped the Beloved with a kiss. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I, can I give him: give my heart.

The People stand for the Ninth Lesson. Ninth Lesson……………………………………………………………………………………...………….John 1

The Rector In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

The Collect

Officiant: We wait for your loving-kindness, O Lord. People: In the midst of your temple. Officiant: Let us pray. O God, who makes us glad with the yearly expectation of your coming: Grant that we, who with joy receive your only-begotten Son as our Redeemer, may without fear behold him when he shall come to be our Judge, even your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

May Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior Christ came among us in great humility, sanctify us with the light of his blessing and set us free from all sin.

May Christ, who by his Incarnation gathered into one, things earthly and heavenly, fill us with his joy and peace.

And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
