Magazines, periodicals, glossies or serials are publications

that are printed with ink on paper, generally published on

a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. They

are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price,

by pre-paid magazine subscriptions, or all three. At its root

the word magazine refers to a collection or storage location.

In the case of written publication it is acollection of written

work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier.The different types of zines are Punkzines, Fanzines and Perzines

TYPES OF MAGAZINESMagazines can be distributed through the mail; through sales by newsstands, bookstores or other vendors; or through free distribution at selected pick-up locations. Sales models for distribution fall into three main categories.

Paid CirculationIn this model, the magazine is sold to readers for a price, either on a per-issue basis or by subscrip-tion, where an annual fee or monthly price is paid and issues are sent by post to readers. Examples from the UK include Private Eye and PC Pro.

Non-Paid CirculationThis means that there is no cover price and issues are given away, for example in street dispensers, airline in-flight magazines or included with other products or publications. An example from the UK and Australia is TNT Magazine.

Controlled CirculationThis is the model used by “insider magazines” or industry-based publications distributed only to qualifying readers, often for free and determined by some form of survey. This latter model was widely used before the rise of the World Wide Web and is still employed by some titles. For exam-ple, in the United Kingdom, a number of computer-industry magazines, including Computer Weekly and Computing, and in finance, Waters Magazine.

First the good news. You have tried and put in effort in creating a publication layout using your existing (or nonexistent) typography skills. The effort is appreciated.

The not-so-good news: You ALL have a long way to go in acquiring fluency and competency in handling type and publication design. There are varying levels of skills in this department in the class – from above average to poor to nonexistent. Most were concentrating (or most likely just struggling) to set type and create a layout. There were very few students who were actually READING the text – before and after designing. Therefore most designs were not able to facilitate legibility, comprehension and understanding of the subject on hand.

This is not to suggest that you don’t have it in you. Acquiring typography and layout skills takes a lot of time, effort and practice. Most of you have just begun that journey. So don’t give up. Some students, the rabbits, exhibit a natural skill early, while there are others, the turtles, who take time to learn good typography or rather, in this context, good publication design to be more precise. The idea is that both kinds reach a certain level of professional competency. Remember there is a lot of bad, I mean REAL BAD publication design in the market...the least you can do is to be able to identify these horrors, if not have suggestions on how to rescue them Those who are more ambitious and confident may also plunge into content, editorial conceptualising,
