EMERGENCY PHILIPPINES TYPHOON APPEAL The Situation Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm ever to make landfall, hit the Philippines on Friday 8 th November, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people have been killed and that 11 million people have been affected by the storm across 36 districts, with the greatest impact felt in the coastal city of Tacloban in Leyte Province. However, given the devastation of such massive natural disasters, these figures are expected to rise. The true nature and scale of humanitarian needs will only become evident in the coming days once access to the most affected areas becomes possible. However, you will have already seen the devastating impact of the super typhoon in the media; the homes of hundreds of thousands of people have been destroyed or severely damaged, power and communication lines are down, roads impassable and airports are out of action. People are struggling to survive in desperate conditions, without food, shelter, access to clean water or healthcare. Concern’s Response Concern Worldwide is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a unique umbrella organisation of fourteen leading aid agencies responding to the crisis in the Philippines. EMERGENCY PHILIPPINES TYPHOON APPEAL

The Situation Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm ever to make landfall, hit the Philippines on Friday 8th November, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

Concern has already released emergency funds to support relief efforts and our Rapid Assessment team is on the ground. Our emergency response will provide those affected with vital supplies of basic essentials including food, clean water and emergency shelter.

Tips for getting started Putting on any event may seem daunting, but your event can be on any scale you choose. Once you’ve chosen what event you will do here are some handy tips to maximise your fundraising:

Set up an online page – find Concern Worldwide on Justgiving or VirginMoneygiving and set up a page Make a list of your fundraising sources - friends, family, work, local public, local schools, local pubs,

local youth group etc. Get some freebies – talk to local businesses and ask them to host, sponsor or give a gift for your event

that you could raffle List the items you are likely to need e.g. posters, sponsorship cards, Concern bibs/t-shirts, collection

buckets, etc. Concern will provide you with most of these materials. Publicise your event- posters, flyers, emails, Just Giving, Facebook, word of mouth. You can contact local

radio, write a press release for the paper and use notice boards to place your posters. We can help with local media

Try to maximise fundraising by holding a raffle, an additional cake sale, or doing a collection at your event.

Don’t forget to remind everyone why you are supporting Concern’s Philippines Appeal - people will relate more to your personal commitment.

Staying safe and legalIt is important to remember that you may need special permission or licenses for carrying out certain activities. If your event is in a public place (not your home or office) it is best to check with your local authority in case you need special permission or licenses. If you are serving food or drink there may be Health & Safety requirements with which you need to comply. If you are doing an extreme activity or expecting a large crowd you may need to have First Aiders in attendance.
