"You're an angel?" Her lips twitched and she fought the overwhelming urge to laugh, but failed. "What are you, crazy?"

The man looked at her for a few seconds before replying. "I am in full possession of my mind, thank you very much." He made to brush past her, but she caught her breath and grabbed his arm.

"Crazy or not, you're not allowed in here," she said, narrowing her eyes. "I'm afraid youll have to leave now." There was no way in hell - ha! - that she was messing up this time. The madman wasnt stepping an inch through the doorway - she was going to make sure of that.

    "Is that so?"

The man halted where he was, and though he didnt move a hair, she felt as if allthe heat had been sucked out of the hallway. She tried not to shiver, but it wasin vain. She could see her breath clouding up the frigid air, and her teeth chattered involuntarily. Howd he do that? Someone on the inside? she thought as she fumbled for her walkie-talkie. "I t-told you, this area is off limits to the p-public," she managed to spit out.

The man didnt reply, and for a moment she thought he was going to back off. Her hopes were unfounded. A heartbeat later, she was flung sideways into the wall sosuddenly that she had no time to scream. Crashing down to the floor with a thump

, she fought to keep in her whimpers as pain - a burning hot sensation, accompanied by sharp stabs whenever she moved - spread like a wildfire through her chest.

Her eyes watered and burned, and through her blurred sight she saw her walkie-talkie lying on the floor a few feet away. She tried to reach for it, but it was in vain. She couldnt keep her concentration on the device; her mind kept snappingback to the pain, or wandering off altogether, and her consciousness threatenedto fade away at any moment. If hes an angel, hes a bloody terrible one, she thoughtdimly before everything slipped into darkness.

------Ky watched dispassionately as the guard slumped onto the ground, unconscious, be

fore stepping through the dust and debris into the room she tried so hard to protect. His footsteps were muffled by the thick red carpet as the narrow hallway opened up into a spacious hall adorned with tapestries, chandeliers, and the like- it felt as if he had been transported several centuries back in time, to a period when all humans cared about were wealth and honorable war and revenge, notpolitics, or subtle murder plots, or manufacturing mass weapons of destruction and trying to keep a world power balance afterwards. Those were better times, hethought as he walked briskly down the center of the long hall. Humans were so much simpler then, and so much easier to take care of. A sudden shout broke his train of thought and pierced the thick silence that had settled down on the room after he had walked in.

"Who the hell are you? Youre not supposed to be in here!" A tall man in a black s

uit slowly approached him, hand on the holster at his waist.
