10.00 am – 11.00 am

Join debut author and Nedlands resident Deborah Burrows to find out the local historical stories that inspired her to write A Stranger in my Street.

This entertaining murder mystery incorporates her mother’s stories of living in Megalong Street in 1939-40 and Doonan Road for the remain-der of World War II.

The novel is set in Perth in 1943, when US troops were permanently docked in the city and Perth women were having the time of their lives. Not Meg Eaton, however. The war had brought her nothing but heartbreak, stealing her young love away Until, in the middle of a heat-wave, she meets her lover’s brother standing over a dead body in her neighbour’s backyard, and becomes embroiled in the murder mystery.

Young and aspiring writers, this is the session for you!

Rosalind Appleby - Women of Note: the Rise of Australian Women Composers

5.30pm – 7.15pm

Take a fresh look at Australia’s history with music journalist Rosalind Appleby. Learn what startling discoveries she made about the contribution of women to Australian classical music.

In the early twentieth century being a female composer was a dangerous game. One was diagnosed as mentally insane by her psychiatrist husband, several achieved success only after their divorces and for many the only way to get their music published was to lie about their gender. Yet the allure of writing music enticed women from all walks of life.

Women of Note puts together the missing pieces of history with well-researched snapshots of twenty-one women composers spanning the twentieth century to present day.

Copies of Women of Note will be available for purchase.

Please join us for champagne and cheese afterwards.

We can help you to find the right opportunity to match your skills, interests and availablility whether it’s an ongoing commitment or a one off event.
