What defines a shark? They’re hungry. They’re smart. They can sense opportunity, says Daymond John, a star of the ABC reality television series Shark Tank and keynote speaker at the 2019 Central Iowa Business Conference.

“Thank you to the members of the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce, which is in the top one percent of chambers nationwide,” said John, founder and CEO of the FUBU hip-hop apparel company. “You’re my fellow sharks.”

John told the story of his life, from selling pencils in grade school to growing up in a single-parent household to starting FUBU in his home in Queens, New York, with little money but a big dream.

“Daymond was extremely vulnerable in sharing the challenges he encountered in bringing his business visions to life,” said Todd McDonald, president of ATW Training Solutions & New Horizons Computer Learning Center in Urbandale. “The challenges he faced didn’t end when he got his business of the ground, they just became different. You need to be strong and resilient every day.”

This is reflected in John’s five “shark points” for success: 1. Set a goal. “You become what you think

about most of the time,” said John, who reviews his goals each night and again

when he wakes up. “Reviewing your goals daily is simple and something I plan to add to my morning routine,” said Adam Tillman, a certified public accountant with the financial services firm BerganKDV in Urbandale.

2. Do your homework. There’s nothing new under the sun. Facebook is just an endless chain letter, John said. “All there will ever be is a new form of delivery, a new way to market, a new way to figure it out.”

3. Amore. The only way to do great work is to do what you love. “I love clothes and love dreaming up new concepts,” John said. Entrepreneur must find their passion and hold themselves accountable, McDonald added. “Surround yourself with great people who will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.”

4. Remember, you are the brand. Life is a series of pitches. Master your pitch in two to five words, and ask what’s in in for the people you’re pitching, John said.

5. Keep swimming. Sharks are always moving forward, much like Urbandale.

“Thanks to the Chamber for putting on this event and continuing to make Urbandale a great place to live, raise families and work,” Tillman said.
