Anatomy of a Policy

Cautionary Statement: This guide is intended to provide general insurance information. You may wish to consult a company or professional advisor of your choice regarding your specific situation. Declarations Page This part of your contract is often called a “Dec Page.” It contains important information about your current policy such as policy term, coverage limits, and information about the insured(s) and the vehicles covered.

Loss Payee If you have a loan or lease outstanding on your vehicle(s), the lender will be listed along with the insured(s) as the Loss Payee.

Discounts Companies may provide discounts based on occupation, number of cars insured, number of policies, anti-theft devices and driver education classes.

Endorsements If you elect to purchase an endorsement that expands or restricts your policy, it must be listed on the Dec Page. Read carefully...or ask to have them explained.

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UM PD) If an uninsured driver causes an accident, this pays for damages to your vehicle up to $15, 000 less your deductible.

Hidden Fees Some insurance companies and their representatives add agent, broker and/or membership fees. These fees may not be part of the premium, but do increase your total cost.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) If an uninsured/underinsured driver causes an accident, this pays for your medical and funeral costs, lost wages, disability and compensation for pain and suffering.

Limits of Liability 100/300/50 means you’re covered for a maximum of $100,000 bodily injury (BI) per person, $300,000 bodily injury per incident and $50,000 property damage per incident.

Drivers Be sure that all regular and occasional drivers of your cars are listed.

Bodily Injury (BI) If you cause an accident, this pays for other people’s medical and funeral expenses, lost wages, disability and compensation for pain and suffering.

Comprehensive Pays to fix or replace your car if it is damaged in a covered loss not involving a collision (such as fire, theft, earthquake, vandalism).

Towing & Labor Pays for towing and labor charges related to an incident covered by your auto policy. May also pay for emergency roadside assistance.

Deductibles The amount you pay before your insurance company pays for covered damage.

Collision Pays to fix or replace your car after a collision with another vehicle or object, regardless of who is at fault.

Vehicles Make sure the vehicles listed are accurate including year, make and model. Special Vehicle Types (special needs, conversion vans, campers, etc.) should be identified.

Medical (Med Pay) No matter who is at fault, this pays for medical and funeral costs for you and your passengers.

Property Damage (PD) If you cause an accident, this pays for other people’s auto and property repairs.

Page 4: A Crash Course In Auto Insurance - IIS Windows Server · 2006-02-14 · B. These important tips will help you choose the right coverage limits and deductibles. Select the Right Coverage

Buy as much Bodily Injury (BI) coverage as you can afford. When setting your limits, make sure to set them high enough to protect yourself against possible lawsuits. The Insurance Information Institute recommends coverage starting at $100,000 of bodily injury per person and $300,000 per accident. The more assets and income you have, the higher liability limits you should consider. Your house, savings and/or future earnings may be used to satisfy a lawsuit against you. Consider the potential implications of an accident. How much damage could there be to each car? How many people might be injured? How much would their medical, lost income, and pain and suffering costs total? Attorneys can drive costs even higher. It’s not surprising that costs can easily exceed $100,000 even for a seemingly minor accident. This coverage is optional. With a good health plan and a low deductible, you may not need Med Pay. But if your deductible is high or you often carry passengers, it’s an inexpensive way to make sure everyone is covered. As a rule of thumb, we recommend that your UM/UIM limits match your bodily injury limits. Comprehensive and Collision coverages are voluntary coverages. You may not need them if you're driving an older car with a very low resale value. If the cost of comprehensive and collision coverages for a couple of years is more than the car is worth, you may want to spend your insurance dollars on additional liability coverage. Most people select a low deductible and have too little liability coverage. Consider raising your Comprehensive or Collision deductibles. This will lower your premium, but require a larger out-of-pocket expense if you have an accident. Then use the savings to increase your liability coverage so that you are adequately protected from damages and lawsuits.

It Pays to Do Your Homework

B. Know your rights.

A. Find out more about your insurance company.

You cannot be denied coverage because of where you live.

Your race, color, religion, ancestry, language and country of origin cannot determine your eligibility.

You cannot be declined, cancelled or non-renewed based on your credit (financial responsibility).

Insurance credit inquiries cannot affect your credit score.

Your personal information must be kept confidential and your right to privacy must be respected.

You have the right to select your own body shop for repairs to your motor vehicle.

You’re buying insurance to help protect your financial security. It’s important to make sure the company you choose is financially strong and provides good service. Ask questions up front about customer service and the claims process. In addition to referrals from friends and family, here are some resources to learn more.
