They will be led by prominent conductor Lin Daye. International cellist sensation Wang Jian will be featured. Lin and Wang have collaborated before, yet it will be exciting to see how they come together with the local orchestra to deliver two significant works in classical music history. The first is Edward Elgar’s “Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85,” the English composer’s last notable work. This is a piece that was com- posed after World War I under tense conditions, and it should come through in the music. The work did not achieve wide popularity until the 1960s, when a recording by Jac- queline du Pre caught the public’s imagination and became a classical best-seller. The concerto will be followed by Austrian conductor Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1 in D Major.” This symphony has seen a lot of develop- ment and is said to have made its mark on the musical landscape with its integration of the German lied. Perhaps the symphony holds other secrets to be discovered. This sym- phony is sometimes called “Titan,” although it is not its official name. When you see the work in action, hopefully the complexity of these movements will rightfully represent that nickname. Barrie, to Shenzhen. Expect a fresh new take on the classic fantasy-adventure story, with Wendy, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook, Tiger Lily and Peter himself performing acrobatics and zooming across the ice. London’s chimneys, the Dar- ling family home, the pirate haunts of Captain Hook and Tiger Lily’s camp all appear in this energetic, fun-filled “Peter Pan on Ice.” Fresh from pro- ductions that include the classic “Snow White” and the modern, critically-acclaimed “Cirque de Glace,” the Russian Ice Stars are again dazzling audiences in this show, with their gravity-defying dance moves, spins, stunts, sword- fights and flaming hoops, all executed in perfectly synchro- nized precision. Medalists distinguished in national, European and Olympic competitions, the elite troupe of 60 Russian skat- ers and lead dancers combines classic ballet, acrobatics, circus antics and pantomime to bring the beloved characters to life, woven together with old world charm and a hefty dose of spec- tacle. The performance is choreo- graphed by Giuseppe Arena, an Italian artistic director engaged in many world-class extrava- ganzas, including the opening ceremony of the 2006 Turin Olympics, while the original score comes courtesy of Silvio Amato. The Italian composer’s arrangements have been com- missioned by Italian, British and U.S. TV networks as well as for film soundtracks, while his uplifting music for this show inspired the production of a full ballet in the United States, where the magical tale has been adapted numerous times in theater and on film.
