o you stash things? Doyou have a junkdrawer? Do you set

aside your mail? We do.Stuart pulled a box from thegarage the other day – it wassealed and covered with atleast five years of dust. Weopened it – and lo and behold! It was full of books that I’vebeen ‘missing’! This box hadbeen stashed in the garage, setaside probably on moving day years ago to ‘deal with later’.

As I was rehoming those long lost friends to the shelves, Icame across other things. Books and pamphlets in the wrongsection and stashed behind other books...notes from a pastproject...old computer cables...some paperbacks...a box ofcards. All things that at one point or another were importantenough to save, but stashed for a rainy day. Although therewasn’t a cloud in the sky – I pulled those random things outand put them where they belonged. Procrastination is a hardhabit to wrangle!

I googled “Stashing thingsand God.” James 1:22-25came up front and center.22Do not merely listen to theword, and so deceiveyourselves. Do what it says.23Anyone who listens to the

word but does not do what it says is like someone who looksat his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goesaway and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25Butwhoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, butdoing it—they will be blessed in what they do. Read theWord and act on what you’ve read. Pretty clear isn’t it?Stashing and saving for later isn’t an option.

God really says “just do it”. It sounds like Nike’s tagline. Here is an idea - what if every time we see that swoosh logo –we see it as a checkmark from God reminding us to share Hisword and His love?! What if every time we see thatcheckmark, it reminds us not to stash the Word or set asideHis love for a rainy day? That checkmark is our YES to God!Yes God, I’ll invite a neighbor to Sunday worship! Yes God,I’ll bring food to help the needy! Yes God, I’ll tell the kids atthe pool about VBS and Summer Music Camp! Yes God, I’llbe there for a grieving friend. Yes God, I’ll call my aunttoday. Yes God, I will share your love and word today!

We Say, Yes Lord yes Lord, Yes yes Lord, Yes Lordyes Lord, Yes yes Lord, Yes Lord yes Lord, Yes yes Lord.Amen.

—Trading My Sorrow, Lyrics by Darrell Evans

Gracious God: Your voice sings in thechurch. Bless our worship, that sharingbread in communion; we also shareabundantly with people in every place.

Your voice sings in creation.Preserve pastures and city parks, oceansand local water sources, so that natureprovides life and protection for allcreatures.

Your voice sings among the nations. Curb the desire forvengeance; turn us from dishonest speech and deceitful living;lead us in your truth.

Your voice sings among those in need: the poor, thehomeless, the suffering, the afflicted, the ill and hospitalized. We pray for the hundreds of kidnapped Nigerian girls, and askfor their protection.9

God our refuge: you deliver us in times of trouble. Wepray for the rejected and persecuted; for neglected infants andchildren; and for the sick, especially for: Ted Alm, AliceBujack, Linda Clayton, Rebecca Cleveland, LillianDilworth, Dana Hackett, Laura Haynes, Tia Heinreich,Susan Hicks, and Garnett Howard.

Also for Bev Langenberger and her daughter, Betty VonWagner, Betty Mahalik, Jean Pritchett, Keith and Bev

Quirk, Shirley Rogers, Jane Seum, Janet Sprague, andGene and Alma Suckow.

We pray also for Barbara Butler’s mother, Dorothy;Joy Clark’s father, Atley; Linda Clayton’s mom; YvonneDrakeley’s son, Ron; Janet Hayden’s husband, Roger; DaveJohnson’s granddaughter, Reese; Kesling’s daughter, NoraLee; and Carol Townsend’s mother, Donna.

Prayers of Thanksgiving - Kim Heinreich’s son, Joshua, has returned safely from military action.

We pray for: Kevin Deleeuw and all mourning thepassing of his grandmother; Marty Heim and all mourningthe death of Marty’s wife, Cheryl; Betty and Dick Kovachmourning the loss of Betty’s son, Denny; and also for Denise,Dagny and Tony Signorelli, all mourning the death of JoeSignorelli.

Grant them comfort in their grief and hope in your gift ofresurrection.

Receive our prayers, merciful God, and dwell in us richly, through Jesus Christ, our life and our redeemer. Amen.

o you stash things?

Amen.

ummer is here! A time for rejuvenation! A time forsleeping in, a time for family vacations and a time forfun! I know I cannot wait! Summer is a time for

families to breathe after the crazy school year jam-packed withactivities. That does not, however, mean that worship shouldstop. In fact, summer is a great time for you to re-invest intoworship and youth group activities. Make sure to read the“That’s the Spirit” newsletter, read the parent emailednewsletter, check the bulletin each week, and check theholyspiritlasvegas.org website often for any changes inworship times and for fun activities of which you can be apart. Going out of town? Try attending a worship service inthe area you will be and then share your experience with therest of the youthwhen you return.

Pentecost Power

Ten days after Jesus ascendedintoheaven, theHoly Spiritdescendedonto Jesus’disciples. While theyweregathered inJerusalemto celebrate

the Jewish festival of Pentecost, thedisciples saw flames among and onthem, heard a rushing wind and began

talking in many languages. As a result, the disciples were able to share thegood news of Jesus in the nativetongues of all the pilgrims assembledin the city.

Even today, the power of theHoly Spirit fuels the “flame” thatignites Christians’ outreach efforts.Only by the Spirit’s power can weknow Christ and make him knownthroughout the world.

Poet William Blake (1757-1827),who’s been described as a passionate,Pentecost kind of person, wrote thispoem about the Spirit’s power:

Unless the eye catch fire,The God will not be seen.Unless the ear catch fire,The God will not be heard.Unless the tongue catch fire,The God will not be named.Unless the heart catch fire,The God will not be loved.Unless the mind catch fire,The God will not be known.

Weheard stories of the heartache causedby our broken immigration system. And we acknowledged the challengeto improving K-12 education in ClarkCounty.

Various government officialswere present and pledged continuingcooperation to address these issues. All seemed duly impressed with thesize of the crowd and the quality ofthe forum.

The next step for Holy Spirit(and other congregations) is to hold ameeting where we listen to storiesfrom our own people and try to decidewhich of the issues we’d especiallylike to work on – Human Trafficking,Elder Issues, Immigration orEducation.

I look forward to showing them thegarden and telling them, “I madethat.” Everyone who is a member ofthis congregation should be proud ofthe garden because it was a teameffort. As the summer comes and

relatives come to visit, show themthat garden and say, “I madethat”.

Without everyone’s help, Iwould not have been able to dothis amazing thing for the church.Everyone’s efforts will come tofruit in the fall, when I expect toreceive my Eagle Scout rank andmedal. There will be a plaquethat is going on the right arm ofthe cross, and it will be emplacedin the fall. I look forward toenjoying the garden with you all.

Nevada for the Common Good

The following people from HolySpirit were part of the approximately1,600 people from across the valleywho attended the recent convention ofNevadans for the Common Good:Cathy Adams, Tim Beasley, JimCassidy, Barry and Linda Clayton,Rita Claerbaut, Ruby Collins,

Yvonne Drakeley, Pr. Paul Hansen,Michael and Karen Harris, JudiHempel, Sandy Hughes, Mike and

Gwen Jolls, Charlie andNorma Kesling, KathyMoses, Dick Moyer, EricOlsen, Shaun Woods andShaun’s friend, Tyler.

Michael Harris,Mike Jolls and KathyMoses arrived early tohelp with behind thescenes leadership. Ibelieve all who attendedwere very impressed withwhat they experienced.

We heardabout the successof our efforts toback AB 67 andcontinuing effortsnow directed atproviding care andtreatment forvictims of

trafficking. We heardstories of elder abuse (especially inunlicensed group homes),transportation challenges for elderly(especially via RTC), and challengesfor respite and family caregivers.

Thanks be to God!

Talking to Godne night I was sleeping and having some unpleasantthoughts/dreams. I remember asking God to stop mefrom those thoughts and lead me somewhere else. He

said great, you want to listen. He gave me a couple ofpersonal examples of slowing down. This is what I heard.

SLOW DOWN!

My Dad loved to go fishing. He was actuallypretty good at it and had all of the tackle and rodand reels — everything you need to get the catchof the day. The family especially loved catfish,(we are from the South) and Dad went for those.

But there were times later on when the kidswere off scouting the woods, and would return tofind Dad fast asleep. And even later when we were older, Dadwould come up empty-handed with 11 of the 12 worms he hadpurchased from the bait store. He would just give them to oneof us and say to scatter them on his roses as they were goodfor the soil. Dad was just as happy as if he had a string of fishto share.

The Lord said, “Those fishing trips were the times whenyour Dad and I would share. He may have appeared asleep, but your Dad actually had some good points to discuss.”

My Dad loved watering his yard by hand.It was usually after supper and the sun hadstarted to go down. He would spend an hour orso just watching the water fall from the hoseonto his plants and flowers. Everything wasstill and quiet and that was perfect because hisjob could be stressful at times.

Dad really wasn’t much of a talker and weall knew he was even less inclined when watering his belovedyard, so it made a lot of sense to wait until Dad came inside.Thinking back, Dad always came back into the house muchmore relaxed and he even might be sporting a sly grin, but Inow think it was a look of peace and contentment. Again theLord said to me, “Your Dad couldn’t go fishing every day, sowe had some great talks when he was taking care of the yard.”

Then the Lord said to me, “I want you to find a placewhere we can talk, it can be anywhere; your Dad chose fishingand yard work. You need to slow down your fast-paced lifeand find a place to be quiet and still, because I want to talk toyou and I want to hear what’s heavy on your heart or justlisten if there is joy you want to share. I’m here day or night, and would love to have a dialog with you.”

“And, oh, by the way, your Dad says ‘hi’ and said thefishing is great.”
