FORUM FOR SCIENTISTS, ENVIRONMENTAL

CONSULTANTS, REGULATORS AND ATTORNEYS

Welcome to the Penn State University 2013 edition of the International Network of Environmental Forensics (INEF) conference 2013. The theme of the conference is the presentation of environmental topics that are uniquely focused on the use of scientific techniques to identify the source, age and timing of contaminant release to the environment (air, surface water, soil, groundwater, and marine). INEF was founded in 2008 for the express purpose of providing a forum for scientists, environmental consultants, regulators and attorneys to share state of the art information regarding the use of environmental forensics. We hope that this three – day conference provides you with a cordial opportunity to meet and interact with your environmental forensic colleagues and to learn about the latest scientific findings and achievements of experts in the field of environmental forensics. The conference is designed to provide formal and informal setting for you to engage with other scientists, working in this field, all to allow opportunities for in-depth discussion and questioning regarding emerging environmental forensic techniques as applied in actual situations. The organizing committee thanks the sponsors for generously supporting this event and to all of the speakers and presenters for volunteering their time and effort to make this a successful conference. Sincerely, Dr. Frank Dorman, Program Chair

GENERAL INFORMATION

Location and Schedule As Pennsylvania's only land-grant university, Penn State has a broad mission of teaching, research, and

public service. In 1855, the Commonwealth chartered it as one of the nation's first colleges of agricultural science, with a goal to apply scientific principles to farming. In the 1880s under the leadership of President George W. Atherton, the college expanded its curriculum to match the Land-Grant Act's broad mandate. From there on, curriculums in engineering, the sciences, the liberal arts, and more began to flourish. In 1922 Penn State began offering systematic advanced-degree work with the formation of the Graduate School. And, by 1950 the University had won international distinction for investigations in dairy science, building insulation, diesel engines, and acoustics, and other specialized fields.

The Hintz Family Alumni Center is named for 1959 graduate Edward R. Hintz Jr. and his family. Hintz was chair of Penn State’s Board of Trustees from 2001–2003 and he chaired Penn State’s Grand Destiny Campaign. He was recognized with the Alumni Fellow Award in 1982 and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. The stone house portion of the center, closest to The Mall, is the oldest building on campus. Previously known as University House, it served as the residence of Penn State presidents from 1864 to 1970.

All technical sessions will be held in 22 Dieke Building and 26 Hosler Building; which are within a close walking distance of the Hintz Family Alumni Center. All Social functions will be held at the Hintz Center and information on other possible locations to visit can be obtained at the registration desk.

The conference will open at 8:45 am on Monday June 10th, 2013, and a full day an Environmental Forensics Course will follow. The technical sessions will begin Tuesday morning, June 11th, and continue until 5:00 pm Wednesday June 12th. The two days of technical sessions will feature selected presentations on environmental forensic topics solicited from international leaders in the field.

The Hintz Family Alumni Center was dedicated in 2001.

Thomas G. Purdy ’83 and Linda O’Gwynn ’76 of Philadelphia were the ones who designed the award – winning wing that was added behind the house.

INEF Volunteers

This logo, on a green t-shirt, will be worn by INEF 2013 volunteers. These volunteers will be able to help direct conference attendees through their stay at Penn State. If you have any questions concerning the conference or the local area, please find one of our volunteers!

Presentation should be approximately 25 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. Each speaker will be provided with a laptop (Windows), projector and microphone for their presentation. Poster presenters are asked to hang their posters at the commencement of the conference (Monday evening’s opening mixer) and remove them on the final day (Wednesday, 1:00 pm). Poster board allocation will be provided upon check in at the conference registration desk. Material for hanging poster will be made available at each poster stand. Poster dimensions will be 4 feet (122 cm) tall by 4 feet (122 cm) wide. Authors of posters should be available to discuss content Tuesday (morning coffee break and Evening Reception) and Wednesday (morning coffee break).

Publication of Proceedings Contributions made by researchers at the conference will be made available in two formats; a collection of abstracts and as a published proceedings. Abstracts for all platform, plenary, workshop and poster presentations may be found with this technical program. Abstracts are arranged according to the individual day, time period and session according to program schedule. All platform, plenary and poster presenters are also asked to submit a manuscript for consideration within a Published Proceeding. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) will publish manuscripts submitted to the conference in a book available in early 2014. Guidelines for authors may be found at the following link: http://rsc.org/Publishing/Books/CRCAuthors.asp. Presenters are asked to send manuscripts to Gwen O’Sullivan ([email protected]) before 15th August 2013 so that the committee can commence the peer-review process.

Student Competition INEF has an active student outreach program with the express purpose of encouraging students to pursue studies in environmental forensics. Student abstracts submitted for the conference as posters or for technical session presentations on an environmental forensic topic will be evaluated by a conference committee. Building from the success and high quality of student presentations at the previous two conferences (Calgary and Cambridge); the awards of $1000 (1st prize), $500 (2nd prize) and $250 (3rd prize) will be presented to the three best student presentations.
