Working closely with the church, Wigwamassessed what was needed and designedsystems to cater for the packed eventscalendar including speech, live bands, visionand playback. The design also had to takeaccount of the varied technical expertise of thevarious users of the church.

The installation required a good quality soundreinforcement system to provide coverage inthe main church, plus facilities for overspillrooms and a mix position on the balcony.

The loudspeaker system uses the d&baudiotechnik White range of loudspeakers,chosen for their exceptional sound quality andaesthetics. d&b 10A’s and 1A subs are flown,with additional 5S speakers installed as front fillsto cover the front rows and two 8Sloudspeakers allow coverage for the mixengineer on the balcony. The front fill speakersare movable to accommodate variousconfigurations and can be switched on and offdepending on how many seats are required fora particular service. Sound relay is alsoprovided to overflow rooms.

A Roland M-480 Digital Mixing Console waschosen as the front of house mixing consoleand a digital audio network was installed usingRoland's proprietory REAC (Roland EthernetAudio Communication) protocol and devices.This REAC network comprised an S-0816digital I/O unit in the amplifier rack, an S-4000DSplitter supplying two onstage S-1608 I/Omodules, with the whole system linked togetherby an S-4000 Merge unit.

For the worship band, a ‘silent stage’ wasrequired (so the levels from the musiciansinstruments cannot overpower the overallsound).

This was achieved using a Roland V-Drumselectric drum kit and the personal monitormixers, allowing the musicians to hear their ownoutput through the M-48 and headphoneswithout making a sound. All events can berecorded using REAC by connecting a PC withSONAR Producer and a REAC Driver kit to theM-480 via a network cable.

A simple stage lighting infrastructure wasinstalled comprising six lighting bars anddimmers. This provides good front lightcoverage and was designed to allow for futureexpansion.

For video coverage, Wigwam specified aRoland V-800HD Vision Mixer, which can mixnumerous inputs including a Vaddio ClearviewHD remote controlled camera. This is controlledfrom the front of house video mix position. Othersources include a laptop and DVD player. ADigital Projection Highlite 660 and a four metrescreen are installed along with various screensthroughout the building to relay the source tooverflow rooms.

To accommodate the wide range of users, itwas crucial that the system could be run in

‘basic’ or ‘advanced’ modes. This is achievedwith an Allen & Heath IDR matrix mixer and anintuitive RTI interface. In the basic mode, justthe lectern mics can be switched on andcontrolled from the lectern position. The custombuilt lectern also gives speakers the ability toselect different sources for the projector andfoldback screen. The advanced mode catersfor a full live stage production, controlled fromthe balcony position at front of house.
