Dear Parents:

Greetings! By now many of you have already heard that LCHS went

through an accreditation review last week. This was a culmination of a lot of

hard work and preparation of information so that the committee visiting the

school could get a complete picture of our school and our programs. I am ex-

cited to tell you that, at the conclusion of their visit, they informed us that

they will be recommending to the Southern Association of Colleges and

Schools (largest accreditation association in the nation) that Loudoun County

High School be Fully Accredited. I want to personally thank everyone who

had a hand not only in producing the documents and in attending the inter-

views, but also all students and parents who day in and day out support the

school and their children. Congratulations to all.

We are now into our Advanced Placement and SOL test windows. This

is a very critical time of the year for students to get plenty of rest so that

they can perform at their best during the tests. Needless to say, eating a

good breakfast will also go a long way to providing the fuel the students

need to sustain them.

As we get ever closer to the end of the year, please continue to moni-

tor our web page for news about activities coming up.

LCHS DECA Relay For Life

May 30th Heritage High School

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. For our third year in a row, we will be forming a Relay For Life team to participate in the American Cancer So-ciety walk at Heritage High School on May 30th. There will be a $10 registration fee and all team members will be responsible for raising at least $100.

We set up two car washes in order to raise money for our Relay team;

During the month of April, DECA helped to raise awareness of Autism in the LCHS community. In the past, money raised has been given to the Helping Hands organization in support of Autism research and education. This year, money raised will support the LCHS Autism group to attend Kings Dominion. School Store sales were donated from April 29th. The School Store is operated by Marketing Education and DECA is the marketing club.

SOCIAL SCIENCE SCIENCE ENGLISH

Peak Performers and Mountain Climbers

Each month look for each of the three teams to recognize students who demonstrate strong work ethic, determination, and willingness to go “above and beyond” their own expectations.

Mrs. Lewis's classes will be fin-

ishing Romeo and Juliet and then be-

ginning a Poetry unit. Students will

create their own poetry collections

as a final project. The final novel of

the year will be Of Mice and Men. Us-

ing discussion threads, students will

exchange ideas about the plot, charac-

ters, and themes of the novel online.

Mr. Bednarski's classes have fin-

ished their exploration of the classi-

cal civilizations of Greece and Rome

and are now examining other major

periods and cultures in world his-

tory such as Islam, African societies

the Americas and the European Mid-

dle Ages. SOL testing time is here

and students should really be re-

viewing material in preparation for

these important assessments.

Mr. Alexander's classes have fin-

ished Islam and is now beginning to

learn about the Americas and the

ancient civilizations there. We will

be studying the Medieval Age

shortly thereafter and reviewing for

our SOL test that we will take in

mid-May.

Mrs. Francis's classes are continu-

ing their study of Plate Tectonics,

Earthquakes, folding/faulting and

Historical Geology. The honors

classes are completing their back-

ground papers for their independ-

ent science research project. Stu-

dents are encouraged to attend

Mrs. Francis's raider rally for an

Earth Science SOL review until the

test is administered in mid-May.

Mrs. Daniel's classes have fin-

ished their study of research

skills and are continuing their

study of William Shakespeare

with the play Romeo and Juliet.

Students are analyzing poetic

devices and acting out key

scenes from the play, as well as

comparing two video versions of

the play. Students are working

on their writing skills along with

Romeo and Juliet and continuing

their study of grammar. They

will be reading the novel Of Mice

and Men to finish the year.

Mrs. Ellison's English classes

have finished their study of the

novel Of Mice and Men. We will be

beginning our study of the novel An-

them and working on our annotation

skills. The students will receive a

copy of the novel to keep and will be

able to practice their annotation

skills in their copy of the novel.

Advanced Placement Testing Schedule A.P., or Advanced Placement classes, are college level courses offered at the high school level. These rigorous courses give students a head start on college while they are still in the supportive environment of the high school classroom. AP students are expected to take the end of course AP tests, for which they may receive college credit or advanced standing. If you have any questions regarding the AP program please give your child’s counselor a call.

Advanced Placement testing is scheduled for May 4 – May 15, 2009. All students in AP classes are expected to take these tests, which are offered at no cost for currently enrolled students. Following is the schedule for AP Exams:

High School Summer School Program

The 2009 High School Summer School Program will offer multiple learning opportunities for students to remediate deficiencies

and expand academic skills. Instruction in core content areas at each grade level and subject area will reflect the LCPS curriculum

and Virginia Standards of Learning.

Transportation Bus transportation will be provided from central pick-up points throughout the county. Schedules and routes will be available closer to the start of summer school. Special Education students must complete the Special Education Transportation form. Students must attend the summer school site assigned for their base school.

On-Line Summer School Courses Enrollment in on-line courses is based on availability of approved courses and must receive the approval of the school principal and the guidance director. Course information is available in the summer school booklet on the Summary Page. The application form is available from the guidance offices at the schools.

Registration and Payment For LCPS Students Registration forms WILL BE SHORTLY available in each high school's guidance office and in the middle school counselors' offices. Complete the Summer School Registration form and any other appropriate forms as needed.

1. Return the forms to your school’s guidance office by June 1, 2009 for a full session class and by June 29, 2009 for a repeat session class. Early registration is recommended. Late registrations will not be considered.

2. Include a check made payable to your home school with the registration form. 3. There is no first day registration at the summer school sites. 4. Refunds will not be made after June 29, 2009, except for cancelled classes.

LCPS SUMMER PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE—2009

It’s hard to believe that this school

year is almost over! The LCHS band

groups and color guard units have done

such a great job all year, winning many awards and acco-

lades. It’s been great fun!

Upcoming events to finish out the year are:

End-of -Year Lawn Concert on Monday, June 1st,

with potluck dinner starting at 5:30 pm, awards at 6:45 pm, and concert starting at 7:00 pm. The meat and drinks

are provided by the BPO, and each class is assigned a par-

ticular food to bring.

Band Movie Night, Monday, June 8th at 6:30 pm.

All registration forms and checks for the 2009 Marching

Band Camp should have already been turned in to Mr.

Young or Ms. Kezmarsky by May 1st. Plans are being

made for the new season. Color Guard and Drumline

camp will begin on August 4th; Marching Band camp starts August 10th.

Spanish Teacher of ten years, has made annual visits

to LCHS for four years, to show our Raiders how to

make the “Ojo de Dios” (Eye of God) wall hanging or

ornament. Everyone chose their colors of yarn and

planned their design as they wrapped yarn around wooden dowels to

create their own unique, personal expression of Mexica “artesanía” (handiwork).

This finished “Ojo” is a diamond, formed by the dowels, covered with yarn of

all textures and colors, as individual as a fingerprint!

Mrs. Allphin and Mr. Wright enjoyed watching and helping the students “stretch

their creative muscles” to think and explore in a different way. It was obvious

that the students had a great time with each other creating their own

“masterpiece” to be admired by all!

Hello to all Raiders, The SCA has finished the Senior Wall. Go to the cafeteria to check it out! We would like to give a special thanks to Rachel Hale, who provided the Seniors ’09 statement, and to Sarah Muse, who painted the wonderful LCHS mural. Currently, the SCA has begun painting the pillars inside the cafeteria for an-other Character Counts project. The SCA would also like to announce their par-ticipation in the upcoming Megan’s Walk. The walk will be held on May 10 and is at LCHS.

Congratulations to the following students from LCHS! Each completed a substantial application form, collected rec-ommendation letters from teachers and wrote essays. Some took proficiency tests, as well. The Foreign Language department is proud of each of these students. They have been selected from a large pool of applicants to fill a small number of positions. The Governor’s Academies for Foreign Language take place over the course of three weeks in the summer on the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

The last of the international and/or regional meals will be completed and kitchen inven-tory starts the end of May into June. If weather permits and all permission slips are returned a walking field trip to the local grocery store will be the “highlight” of the month of May. Take the lead WE NEED YOU! The PTSA at LCHS will be changing next year. All positions are open: president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. There are currently no candidates for these positions. The life of the PTSA depends upon volunteers. Please con-sider taking an active role in the PTSA next year. If no one steps forward, then it is possible that all our current funds would have to be turned over to the State PTSA. In that event, there would be no PTSA at LCHS for the coming school year.

We really could use your help. Monthly meetings are usually one hour or less. There are usually plenty of volunteers, but we just need some people to take the lead. Are you up for working the night shift?

We are still looking for volunteers for the All-Night Grad Party on Saturday, June 20, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the Ida Lee Recreation Center.

It is an LCHS tradition for parents of underclassman to work at the party so that parents of graduating sen-iors can relax knowing that their new graduates are cele-brating in a safe and fun environment.

Volunteers are needed for set-up, clean-up and to work at the party. Shifts are from 11 p.m. – 2 a.m. and 2 a.m. – 5 a.m.

e all know the stories of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Bean-stalk and Little Red Riding Hood – or do we? Nothing is quite what it seems if you go into the woods today! And not everything ends in happily ever after when the characters are left to work out their own

destinies. Into the Woods humorously combines a number of classic fairy tales such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood with the story of the Baker and his Wife who have been cursed with child-lessness by a witch and must perform various missions to break the spell. The traditional stories are parodied and altered at will, yet the original fairy tales' sense of wonder and, at times, darkness remains intact. The score, winner of Broadway's Tony Award, includes such songs as Children Will Listen, Giants in the Sky, and No One Is Alone.
