Grand Final
What a big day and what a great community event the Loddon Valley Football
League Grand Final at Mitchell Park, on Saturday turned out to be. It has been
fourteen years since we have hosted a grand final. There was a huge crowd
which kept all the volunteer workers from the Football and Netball Club very
busy - keeping up to parking, food preparation, serving, cooking, cleaning, court
supervision and generally running around making sure the day ran smoothly.
It was great to see people pulling together on the day and in the weeks before to
have our Footy Ground, Netball Courts and facilities looking a million dollars
and to the standard worthy of a Grand Final in any league.
The Grand Final was a very profitable day for our club, so thank you to everyone
who helped in anyway, especially serving in the sheds and tents. A big thank you
to those people who donated food for the shed and items for the raffle. A special
thank you to our Junior netball and football players who worked all day on
various tasks. Well done to everyone for a very successful day.

LVTA Presidents Report 2015/16
On beginning this report and reflecting back on the 2015/16 season of the LVTA, it is done with the realisation that Greens and Kerang are seeking an alternative competition for the coming season. Nothing is forever and constant change is a given. In order to survive the decline in rural population and an ageing community, we must continually re invent ourselves. The 2015/16 season commenced with Lake Charm going into recess for the current year leaving the comp with just seven teams. This created a bye which brought with it issues of an uneven draw and fairness in allocating points for the teams with the extra bye. The season as a whole was largely successful with very few forfeits and from memory, no washouts or days lost due to extreme heat. The lack of juniors across all clubs continues to be a concern with most participants being children of senior players. I am sure there is an opportunity to encourage other children into tennis and then indirectly, parents of these children to be involved. Congratulations to Lake Meran on being crowned the Premier team for season 2015/16 season, in what was a very even top four teams. As much as we all play competitive sport to win, we shouldn’t forget the bigger picture of continuing to have Saturday tennis in our local area for the generations to come. Tennis provides a vehicle for people from all sectors of the community to come together to enjoy a moderate level of physical exercise, socialise, share stories and make new friends. I would like to personally thank all teams for allowing fill in players when needed and embracing the spirit of the rule in order to ensure our hit on a Saturday goes ahead. Without this flexibility there would be many more forfeits. Congratulations to the VCTA country week Men’s team led by stalwart Colin Mann, who enjoyed the spoils of victory at Wodonga this year. In closing may I take this opportunity to wish all clubs the very best for the 2016/17 season and beyond and once again implore that we must continue to embrace change, look for ways to prosper and encourage new participants. “What we think, we become” Buddha
Don Stewart, President LVTA

Message from
the CFA
SUMMER is fast approaching and now is the time to start cleaning up around the farm and around the house. With such a good winter, there is huge amounts of grass and fuel around the coun-tryside, which all points towards a very bad fire season. Now is the time to start clearing grass and fuel from around the house, sheds and yards, by either spraying or mowing. The season ahead is going to be a very bad and dangerous fire season, so please help by starting to clear away grass and rubbish from around your house.

Seniors News
The weather was kind to us yesterday for our wonderful trip to Confectionery Capers at Junortoun. Hundreds of gadgets doing marvellous things. Funny sayings and interesting paragrams, such as “sausage on a barby”, was a Barbie doll with a sausage on its head! Then off to the Commercial Hotel in Heathcote for the biggest meal ever, even the half serves were hanging off the plate - very yummy!. Then a trip around the Op Shop and cuppa at the Bakery. Home via the spillway at Lake Eppalock - not of a drop of water to be seen, the road was wetter! Movie Day - “Driving Miss Daisy” - very funny in parts - well attended and enjoyed. Luncheon - also well attended and enjoyed. Card Bingo - Joan Harley won 7 games, and after not winning any games last week. (Peg’s cushion had something to do with that!) Margaret Reynolds also won 7. Cards - starting back this Thursday at 6.30 pm - all welcome, Senior Citz or not. Happy Birthday to Gladys Fawcett on the
15th and anyone else having one. Stay well, stay safe

Thursday Practice: It was great to see a few numbers turn up to practice last Thursday evening. They were the dedicated ones who took the opportunity to get into a bit of early form. Hopefully the numbers will build over the coming weeks. This week the ladies are engaging in a pre-season social outing on Thursday but they should return from their garden and coffee pampering in time for training. 60 And Over: It was encouraging to see that we were able to field a full PH representative team this week. With plenty of experience and crusty determination, the lads (Andy the Skip, Allan F., Ernie and Bill) showed improvement from the previous week and scored a win in their second game. You get top scores for that effort, chaps! Sadly the results from their last game (results which will remain undisclosed at this stage – albeit forever kept secret if the right price is paid) indicated that the perfor-mance levels could not be main-tained – or the opposition was amazingly strong! Nevertheless, a win is a win and there is promise
for further improvement next week.
Information from Board
Meeting:
Refurbishment of shade structures is under way and should be completed before the commence-
ment of Pennant.
Incentive awards will be introduced for both Midweek and Saturday Pennant with team attaining the highest winning margin eligible for
the prize
A Weather Policy is drafted for discussion at next Board Meeting. Ian Stanford appointed to regularly attend to the lawn mowing. Working Bee set for Tuesday 4th October 3:00pm to tidy and clean prior to first Pennant match. Achievement Board to be updated. Flooring and repairs to flooring still a work in progress. BBQ following Practice on Thursday 6th October prior to first Saturday Pennant game. Thank you to Ian B., Graham, Bruce, Nola and Ernie for attending to several maintenance jobs during the off season – a group of quiet contributors. “Well done” to Andy and Allan who have worked consistently to bring our greens into good shape – they look fantastic (the greens that is!!) Memberships: Players are asked to forward their memberships to Lionel as soon as possible. Membership fees remain as they were last year ($100).
Something to contemplate:

A very cordial welcome was extended to Jack Kelly (and his pal). Since last home, nursing an injured foot copped when the Canberra was sunk. Jack has been seeing the world. First we heard of him being in England, then of being put ashore in United States and of several blood transfusions saving his
life. Exciting times followed in the Mediterranean, at Sicily, Italy and the Dodecanese Islands. Another never to be forgotten and exciting cruise was over the arctic route north of Norway to the Russian port of Murmansk. We asked Jack how he stood up to the freezing conditions not so far from the North Pole, and he replied that he wished often he was back home at Pyramid Hill. The three lads spent a great time here (Tubby being treated equally as a brother, Kelly as the guest of Mrs. Alex Mclver), and one and all express the hope that the day is not far distant when the streets of the town will be packed with local lads home for good with a Victory Badge on their breast.

From the Pyramid
Advertiser Wednesday, June 14,
1944
Three Jolly Tars Petty-Officer Des Kelly was tendered a public social by the Citizens Farewell Committee in the Memorial Hall a fortnight ago, and a real fine time was spent by a large company. Among those present was Mrs. J. V. Kelly, the young guest's mother, who made a special trip down from Melbourne for the happy occasion, and looking particularly well, too. Des was supported by his elder brother Jack, just returned from a world cruise and, if weight tells, in great fighting trim, and also another lad of the unbeatable Silent Force in the person of Tubby Saunders, who was shipmate with Jack Kelly when they were fortunate to escape death when the cruiser Canberra was sunk by the Japanese in the early days of the Solomons campaign. The social was along the usual lines and presentations were made, the ladies doing the honours with a delectable supper. It was really a going and coming celebration, for Des has beaten the going portion of it by many months service in the Navy. He, like his brother, has been ''in the thick of it”, and it was while his ship was taking part in the Allied invasion of Hollandia (New Guinea) only just recently that he sustained a fractured wrist and was sent back home to recuperate. It won’t be long before
Des is back on the job once again.
