The History

St. James’s House has a rich and fascinating history that extends right back to the Tudor kings of England.

In 1531, Henry VIII acquired the hospital of St. James’s and 185 acres of land and built a palace surrounded by a royal park. St. James’s Street was the area’s earliest thoroughfare, providing access to the great Tudor Gatehouse. Later on, Charles II’s mistress, the Countess of Castlemaine, lived on this site from 1668 to 1689, but after a fire at the Palace of Whitehall in 1698 the royal court moved to St. James’s Palace, thus securing status and desirability for the whole area.

In the early 18th-century, 88 St. James’s Street was a coffee house (the forerunner to the gentlemen’s club) attracting London’s intelligentsia, who came to debate the politics of the day. This was destroyed by fire and in 1813 the St. James’s Hotel, which would become home to assorted members of the gentry, was built in its place.

The imposing Classicist building that stands here today was designed and built in 1904 by celebrated British architects Richard Norman Shaw and Ernest Newton. Richard Norman Shaw was considered by many to have been the most influential architect of the late Victorian era, while Ernest Newton was the president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Due to its proximity to St. James’s Palace, plans for the new building were submitted to King Edward VII for his approval. The new St. James’s House was occupied on the ground floor by the Alliance Assurance Company and the Post Office while the upper floors were designed as bachelor flats with their attendant service quarters.

Today, St. James’s House has the rare distinction of a prestigious Grade II* listing in recognition of its historical significance.

“St. James’s Street has been at the very heart of London life for nearly two hundred years,

and it would require the pen of a Thackeray to do justice to the glories

of this street of streets.” ‘Round about Piccadilly and Pall Mall’,

The Location

For hundreds of years St. James’s has been at the heart of national life, and it is still London’s most eminent, sought-after district.

With St. James’s Palace at its heart, just a few hundred yards from Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster and flanked by the outstandingly elegant St. James’s and Green Parks, it has a traditional, quintessentially British atmosphere, one that cannot be matched elsewhere in the capital.

From the beautiful shop fronts of Jermyn Street to Sir Christopher Wren’s church on Piccadilly or one of the many elite gentlemen’s clubs, to explore the streets of St. James’s is to discover prestige and sophistication on an unprecedented scale.

Designated as The St. James’s Conservation Area in 1968, the district is home to 150 listed buildings, the most in any one location in England. Grade I listed buildings include St. James’s Palace, St. James’s Church, the Reform, and Pall Mall. Meanwhile, Grade II and II* listed buildings number The Ritz, the Economist Building and The Reform Club among their ranks.

“Domaine St. James’s: Sophisticated, urbane and beautifully balanced. Fine structure has allowed it

to last for a long time already, but at the same time it is ageing gracefully and has

a glorious future ahead of it. At f irst glance it seems old-fashioned and perhaps, to some, inaccessible, but closer

examination reveals a surprising modernity in construction, a generous welcome and

many contemporary notes.” Simon Berry, Chairman of Berry Bros. & Rudd

With its superior heritage, St. James’s represents a rare and highly desirable quality of life.

Even more exclusive than Mayfair to the north, St. James’s has always been an important destination for the highest ranks of society from around the world. This can be seen by the sheer number of English Heritage Blue Plaques that abound. Lady Astor, Chopin and Sir Isaac Newton are just three of its former residents.

Bordered by Mayfair, Haymarket, the Mall and Green Park, St. James’s historic streets have remained virtually unchanged for decades, perhaps centuries. Attracting a discerning visitor with its eclectic variety of shopping, dining, hotels and cultural establishments, the district is defined by an extraordinary sense of refinement.

St. James’s holds more royal warrants than anywhere else in the UK. With a reputation for traditional fine craftsmanship and elegant sophistication, particularly shirt, shoe and hat makers and luxury grooming, its style continues to help define British fashion the world over.

Most of London’s original gentlemen’s clubs such as Boodle’s, White’s and Brooks’s are located around St. James’s, offering men at the top of society a comfortable home from home.

St. James’s also boasts a large concentration of private galleries, including the strikingly modern White Cube, as well as more traditional British institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts. Alongside galleries, the district is home to the city’s finest auction houses such as Christie’s.

“If you were to ask me what places St. James’s above and beyond its neighbouring districts in the West

End of London I would have to say a profound respect for discretion. The people fortunate enough to live and work here don’t like to advertise the fact that a St. James’s address

is the metropolitan equivalent of travelling f irst class.”
