Power & AnointingA closer look
On Power….Eph 1: 18-19 “ I pray that the eyes of
your heart may be enlightened so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.”
Basic truths…We should desire & expect to
experience the divine power of God in our lives.
Every believer can have the power of God through the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…and they were all filled….”
Lacking in nothing…Col 2:9 & 10 “In Him all the fullness of
Deity dwells in bodily form. In Him you have been made complete.”
Power is not a thing, it’s a Person named Jesus.
Col 1:29 “I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.”
His omnipotent power resides in us – we don’t need more - we need to discover, develop and exercise what we already have.
The “wow” factor…Eph 1:3 “ Blessed be the God & Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in …Christ.”
Eph 3:20-21 “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever.”
Seeking a fresh/new anointing…The statement is problematic because it
implies we are lacking something we still need God to give us – some additional empowering (like trying to super-size the Holy Spirit.)
Lk 4: 18-21 “The spirit of the Lord is upon me because He anointed Me to preach,….”
Jesus’ anointing for His role as Messiah came on Him (and stayed on him at his baptism, when the HS descended.
This is still OT modality
OT AnointingAnointing: Pouring oil over
someone’s head, done most times by either a prophet or a priest, as a symbol of God’s appointment, authority and empowerment to play a special role, or to serve the Lord.
Christ – a title meaning “anointed one.”
Like power, anointing was something that “came upon” the person.
Believers’ anointing…2 Cor 1:21-22 “Now He who establishes
us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.”
1 Jn 2:20 “But you have (Gr. possess) an anointing from the Holy One…”
1Jn 2:26 “As for you, the anointing which you have (already) received from Him abides in you…and His anointing teaches you about all things…”
Final thoughts…Anointing is a divine empowerment
that comes from within us.Anointing is not for only those who
appear to be at a special or more mature level in their walk with Christ.
It is not relegated to only “offices” in the church, but rather it is for every believer.
Anointing, like power, is not a thing; it’s a person whose name is Jesus.
Bottom line…We pray that by God’s grace we would
capture a revelation that:The power of God is resident in us
through the same spirit who raised Christ from the dead.
We are already anointed, by the indwelling spirit of the Anointed One Himself.
Both power and anointing are not things; they are a person named Jesus Christ!
