A clear case:Less emissions, a better future

Incidentally, the aircleaners, oil filters, fuel filters and CCV solutions of the MANN+HUMMELproduct range reduce en-gine wear and make an additional contribution tothe reduction of emissions.

Around the world the statu-tory requirements designed toprotect the environment andour health are increasing. This means that effective andefficient filtration technologywith a wide range of productsis becoming increasingly im-portant for diesel-poweredvehicles and machines.

Severe laws? You just need the right partner.

MANN+HUMMEL is yourcompetent system partner for reliable and future-prooffilter technology in order toprotect the environment andour health, to meet currentregulations and to minimizethe lifetime costs of your diesel equipment. We are aleading filtration specialist forindustrial diesel applicationssuch as construction ma-chines and forklifts and we usetechnology proven thousandsof times in the field of on-highway applications – forOEM products and also forthe retrofit market.

New challenges? A question of the right system.

Your real advantage is thatwith MANN+HUMMEL youhave an extensive range offilters at your disposal. Wecan complement your dieselparticulate filter with othersystem components such asair cleaners, oil filters, fuel filters and CCV (crankcaseventilation) solutions. In thisway we can considerablylengthen the lifetime of yourdiesel engine with minor in-vestments in filtration tech-nology. Our whole productrange makes an additionalcontribution towards reducingengine emissions. This facttransforms filtration from acost factor into an astute investment resulting in lowerrunning costs.

Economy? It's the filter technologythat counts.

MANN+HUMMEL diesel par-ticulate filters already satisfy

the emission limits plannedfor tomorrow worldwide. Thisguarantees the usefulness ofyour investment. The dieselparticulate filter technology ofMANN+HUMMEL is based onsintered metal technology. This technology offers sub-stantial advantages over con-ventional filter solutions whichenable easy cleaning of thefilter as required, a long pro-duct life, a robust productsuitable for use under extremeconditions, and a high ashholding capacity resulting invery long service intervals. In2003, these advantages wererecognized with the GermanEnvironmental Award.

Worried about downtimes? Innovative products allowcontinuous operation.

MANN+HUMMEL offers active and passive systemswhich regenerate during nor-mal operation and therefore donot require costly downtimes.

Good news:No limits for the environment – but for emissions

At a glance:Examples of international re-gulations governing particu-late matter

The equipping of industrial dieselmachines with filtration technologyto reduce emissions is becominga selection criterion for projecttenders. The following mandatoryregulations governing particulatematter are already in place:

EuropeThe EU directive 1999/30/EU stipulates that in EU memberstates an emission limit of50µg/m3 particulate matter(PM10)* must not be exceededfor more than 35 days in the year.As a result many local and re-gional authorities have drawn upplans to control air pollution withthe aim of reducing emissions

tion control areas may only beoperate if fitted with diesel par-ticulate filters (particulate matterregulation based on IG-L, the Federal Emission Control Act).

ItalyIn South Tyrol since 2007 all build-ing sites operated by the publicauthorities have to use construc-tion machines equipped with diesel particulate filters. Thereare incentives for constructioncompanies to equip their ma-chines with filters.

UK – LondonSince 2007 a number of buildingsites in London have only been allowed to use construction ma-chines fitted with diesel particulatefilters, according to the Best Prac-tice Guidance – The Control ofDust and Emissions from Con-

of particulate matter (PM10). In many cases these plans also af-fect industrial diesel applications.

GermanyOver and above the prevailingEU directives Germany has de-fined additional maximum occu-pational exposure limits at work-places (TRGS 554).

SwitzerlandSince 1998 construction machi-nes in Switzerland have to be fitted with a VERT** approveddiesel particulate filter accordingto the BUWAL-BauRLL (manda-tory regulations for constructionsites issued by the Swiss FederalOffice for the Environment).

Austria Since 2005 in Tyrol constructionmachines (>18 kW) in air pollu-

* PM10 = particulate matter particles with a diameter < 10µm ** VERT is a suitability and quality test for diesel particulate filters

struction and Demolition. This serves as a model for all construc-tion machines in Greater London.

USA – CaliforniaThe Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) in the USA has in-itiated the National Clean DieselCampaign with a number of pro-grams for on-road and off-roadapplications. The Risk ReductionPlan from the Californian EPAplans an 80% reduction of all par-ticulate matter (PM10) emissionsin California by 2010.

New YorkSince 2005 construction ma-chines (> 50 PS) in New York Cityhave to be equipped with dieselparticulate filters (Local Law 77 –New York City).

By the way – after 2011 theOEM market will also besubject to stricter controls. After that the use of dieselparticulate filters in Europeand the US will becomestandard for the reductionof emissions in new indus-trial diesel applications.

According to a report con-cerning “Diesel Fuel and Ex-haust Emissions” written in1996, the World Health Or-ganization (WHO) classifiesparticulate matter as harmfulto health. Legislators in manycountries have since reactedand introduced measures tostop operators using industrialdiesel applications without re-duced engine emissions.

The pure truth:MANN+HUMMEL is fit for the future

It's good to know that whenyou retrofit a filter systemfrom us you will have nothingto fear from the environmen-tal protection regulations. The following is an over-view of the most importantcurrent and imminent lawsand regulations:

• The EU directive 1999/30/EUstipulates that an emission limit of 50µg particulate matter (PM10)* per cubic meter of air must not be exceeded for more than 35 days in the year.

• Air pollution control plans for local and regional auth-orities are currently being drawn up all over the world.

• In Germany the labor pro-tection legislation has de-fined additional maximum occupational exposure limits (TRGS 554).

• In the Italian region of South Tyrol and in Austriathere are various incentive programs to encourage retrofitting.

Forwards with retrofitting

Around the world there arenumerous incentive programs

offering financial assistance forthe retrofitting of diesel particu-late filters. MANN+HUMMELassists customers to selectthe right program. At the latestby 2011 diesel particulate filters will be standard forOEM producers and the in-centive programs will most likely end. A decision to retro-fit your industrial diesel appli-cations now means you aresure to benefit from the incen-tives currently on offer. Wheretenders today already stipu-late diesel particulate filters, you will have a competitiveadvantage. This is also validfor cross-border operations,e.g. in Switzerland, wheretoday operators already haveto retrofit. And another import-ant consideration is the safe-guarding of the health of youremployees.

ES SMF®-AR diesel particulate filters:

This product available worldwide eliminates the discharge ofparticles from engines up to 130 kW and therefore satisfies therequirements of today and tomorrow. Special features are theVERT approval, the durability of the sintered metal design, thehigh ash holding capacity and the considerably lower runningcosts in comparison to conventional diesel particulate filters.

CRT® diesel particulate filters:This easy and robust system is designed for high output engines (up to 560 kW) and also has VERT approval. The user has the same product advantages as with the brandedproduct SMF®-AR.

Preliminary fuel filter:Higher injection pressure increases the demands placed on fuel filtration with regard to the separation of water and par-ticles. Producers of injection pumps have therefore formulateda set of requirements. MANN+HUMMEL offers the PreLine®

preliminary fuel filter which separates water with an efficiencyof at least of 93% according to ISO 4020. Preliminary fuel filtration protects modern injection systems against damagefrom corrosion and abrasion. This reduction in wear prolongsengine life and also reduces emissions.

Centrifuges:This branded product from MANN+HUMMEL is for the filtrationof oil and efficiently separates contaminants such as soot and fine metal particles present in the lube oils of diesel engines. This lengthens the service life of the oil, lowers running costsand simultaneously ensures the maximum lifetime for diesel ap-plications with reduced downtimes. In addition, centrifuges pre-vent unnecessary engine wear and therefore make an importantcontribution towards the reduction of diesel engine emissions.

Crankcase ventilation:The MANN+HUMMEL ProVent® series for open and closedcrankcase ventilation enjoys worldwide acclaim. The reasonsfor this are the highly efficient oil separation of the system, theflexibility of use offered by its compact design and the low run-ning costs achieved through reduced oil consumption. Addi-tional features are high operational reliability through protectionagainst excessive crankcase pressure and easy servicing.

Air cleaners:MANN+HUMMEL air cleaners are characterized by a high separation efficiency, a long service life and a high dirt holdingcapacity. The flexibility of use enabled by their compact designis another advantage together with the low running costsachieved through low pressure drop and high operational re-liability, made possible by reliable sealing. A further efficient side effect is the easy disposal and recycling of the metal-freefilter elements.

engine. Replacement is there-fore not necessary. The resultis lower running costs.

The right performance profile

Sintered metal technologyenables a long product lifeand also provides for a highseparation efficiency consider-ably above 99%. The flexi-bility of use enabled by thecompact design is also a clear advantage. Through useof an automatically dosed diesel additive the regener-ation process remains NO2

neutral. This makes your investment a safe one.

SMF®-AR diesel particulatefilters are designed for appli-cations in the lower to me-dium power output range withlow or dynamically changingpower consumption. The highperformance of the SMF®-ARis based on the decades ofexperience MANN+HUMMELhas in the field of filtration tech-nology. This self-containedsystem consists of a filter plussoftware, electronics and sen-sors and has a fully automaticoperation. The SMF®-ARfunctions on the principle ofactive regeneration whichmeans that the soot burn-offis initiated as soon as the filter is fully loaded with soot.

Companies and the environ-ment benefit equally from theadvantages of this innovativeknow-how.

Costs under control

The SMF®-AR allows con-tinuous machine operationwithout downtimes. Depend-ing on the application, the verylong service intervals of 2000to 2500 operating hours are afurther benefit. The sinteredmetal design of the filter withits minimal maintenance requirement offers a furthercontribution to the reductionof costs. The life of the filtercorresponds to the life of the

Example vehicles are forklifts, mini-excavatorsand wheel loaders up to130 kW.

CRT® – the strong solution up to 560 kW

Engineered by HJS/DES

Fit for high power

CRT® diesel particulate filtersare designed for diesel ap-plications in the medium tohigh power output range witha high and constant powerconsumption. Continuous regeneration is made with anintegrated oxidation catalyticconverter provided the ex-haust gas temperature for25% of the operating time is

> 260°C. Application ex-amples are dumper trucks, mobile excavators, wheel loaders and track vehicles.

The CRT® diesel particulatefilter benefits from the sameadvantages as its smallbrother, the SMF®-AR, whichare a long life, high separationefficiency, flexibility of use,and a safe investment. Someaspects, however, such aslow running costs through reduced downtimes and thevery long service intervals for large machines are even more significant.

VERT is a suitability andquality test for diesel par-ticulate filter systems for theprotection of people and theenvironment in Switzerland.VERT is recognized inter-nationally. For example, inCalifornia VERT examin-ations are accepted by the registration authorities.
