From the Board Chair“You’ve come a long way, baby.” Once a memorable ad campaigntargeted at women, it somehow works to describe the remarkabletrajectory of TheatreWorks over these past 47 years. What began as a theatre arts workshop for high school and college kids has growninto an internationally acclaimed organization that celebrates thehuman spirit in everything it does. This accomplishment is clearly evidenced by the work you’re seeing tonight. The Life of the Party, which debuted in London two years ago at the prestigious Menier

Chocolate Factory, is an extraordinary celebration of Andrew Lippa’s tuneful, heartfelt, and always entertaining works, and we’re thrilled to mount its American premiere.

And as you’re enjoying The Life of the Party on stage, I want to invite you toanother party, another premiere actually, off-stage. TheatreWorks’ first ever “Party ofthe Decade” will take place on Saturday, November 12 at Palo Alto Hills Golf andCountry Club. And because TheatreWorks was founded in 1970, it seems only fittingthat we revisit this decade for our inaugural celebration.

At the risk of only mild hyperbole—Nobody parties like theatre people. Comerevel in the sights, sounds, and raucous nostalgia of the ‘70s. We were wearing colorfulbell bottoms, ponchos, and leisure suits while tuning into Charlie’s Angels, M*A*S*H,and All in the Family. Gloria Gaynor and the BeeGees gave us disco while competingwith Blondie, Queen, and James Brown for our listening and dancing pleasure.

Now… imagine reliving all this with some unique TheatreWorks twists. Come enjoyan elegant reception and dinner as the wine flows throughout the evening. Make a run for your table’s favorite dessert during the lively “Dessert Dash,” and bid to buyexclusive, one-of-a-kind auction items. You’ll also enjoy some fabulous TheatreWorksentertainment and dancing to the oldies-but-goodies ‘70s playlist of The E-Ticket Band. This is one party you’ll definitely not want to miss.

Come alone or bring a group—guaranteed fun either way. After all, theatre folksare the friendliest people around! So what are you waiting for? Tickets, tables andsponsorships are on sale now at theatreworks.org/give/partydecade. I can already seeyou getting your ‘70s on. Come on, admit it. You’re intrigued. You’re ready. It’s yourturn to be the life of the party!

The Life of the Party promises tobe more than just an evening ofcompiled songs. AssociateDirector of Marketing SychePhillips sat down with the show’sco-conceiver and director DavidBabani to talk about the originand the intention of The Life ofthe Party—and how it’s morethan just a musical revue.

Syche Phillips: So what is the background of this fantastic night of theatre?

David Babani: Andrew and I have been friends for nearly20 years now. We’ve worked together a bunch all overthe place, but I don’t think we’ve ever worked togetherin America. Andrew had some spare time and we had a slot open at the Chocolate Factory, and we’d beentalking for ages about finding something to do together. We were looking at producing various shows of his, butthen the idea came up to make a show together basedon all of his material. I jumped at the opportunitybecause I know his material so well, and I love it. AndAndrew really wanted to perform in it. He wanted todance in it, sing in it, and act in it.

SP: Of course!

DB: So the challenge was there to create a very satisfy-ing evening of theatre around the Andrew Lippa songbook, but with this amazing trump card which wasthat we actually had the man himself at the center of itall. When we started looking at it, I was thinking aboutthe other compilation shows that take material that previously existed, and how they can be unsatisfying, they can be funny but not necessarily engaging on anemotional level…we just looked at all the things that you don’t always get from a show like this, and thenwent away to try to work out how to put them all intothis show. And we’ve worked very hard to create a verysatisfying evening with a genuine emotional arc, that can entertain, educate, and move you. For me, that’swhat all great theatre should do, and if we can achievethat through the medium of Andrew Lippa’s amazing talent, then we’re all very lucky.

SP: Most revues have a very loose arc, if any at all, buthow is this one different?

When Is a Revue More than a Revue?A Conversation with Director and Co-conceiver David Babani

DB: The thing that makes the show interesting and different from other shows that it would naturally becompared to, is that the real meat, Andrew’s bigBroadway shows, we don’t just do a couple numbersand move on. We take a section of 4 or 5 songs andsort of visit with them for 20 minutes or half an hour, and all the cast will play characters from within thatshow, and we’ll tell a little story arc over the course ofthose songs, with no breaking the fourth wall. So youget, in essence, four or five shows through the evening, and they’re fully costumed and fully designed and all, within this world of The Addams Family or The WildParty or Big Fish, or so on and so forth. And thenbetween those pieces, we’ve got lots of really fun treatsand cabaret style songs, some from his smaller showsthat he’s written. It’s a show that delights and entertainsin Act 1, and then gets very dark and sexy, and thenvery moving, and then goes all show biz at the end. Itreally does have a little bit of something for everybody. It’s a really satisfying show for the performers to play, and they love it, and as a result, the audience can’tresist having a good time.

SP: Is there anything you learned in London that hasaffected or changed the structure of the show?

DB: The only thing I learned from the run in London isnever underestimate the intelligence of your audience.

SP: Do you have a favorite moment in the show?

DB: That’s a horrible question. [Laughter] I have manyfavorite moments, but I don’t want to say what theyare… This show is like a chocolate box, and there are somany gorgeous little morsels in there. I want to let youchoose your own.

SP: Are you guys working on anything new togetherright now?

DB: Andrew and I have like a million things on the gotogether at any one time, and I’m hoping that all thedifferent balls we have up in the air at the moment willcome to fruition in the future—and hopefully we’ll getto premiere whatever we come up with here.

SP: Thank you!

DB: Excellent.

SP: Excellent.

FAMILYAndrew Lippa is family. He’s been a vital part of TheatreWorks for over adecade and we are thrilled to produce the American premiere of The Life of the Party. Years ago I asked old friend Brian Crawley, librettist of the musical Violet (TheatreWorks, 1999) if he had anything new indevelopment. He was transforming the novel A Little Princess into a musical with the Drama Desk Award-winning composer of The Wild Party, and I was immediately enthused. Unfortunately, it was scheduled todebut in Australia. Art isn’t easy. When the financing fell apart, Brian gave me a call: anychance we were still interested? We were! Their beautiful show was massive, intimidating, and absolutely thrilling. We gave it our all and itsworld premiere became the highlight of our 2004 season. And composerAndrew Lippa became a friend for life. By the time A Little Princess opened, we had already featured anotherof Andrew’s shows in our 2003 New Works Festival. Jerry Christmas wasa hilarious tale of a Jewish comedian trying to revive his career with a televised Christmas special. That’s when I met the real Andrew. When theshow struggled in its first performance, he stayed up all night to completely rewrite Act II. Here was an artist with energy to match hisimmense passion. We would eventually do two other Lippa musicals in our Festival,Asphalt Beach in 2006 (rambunctious girls in a repressive Catholic school)and The Man in the Ceiling last summer (Jules Feiffer’s autobiographicalnovel brought to life). We also hosted a madcap Betty Boop at our 2005Writers Retreat. Andrew and his art had become part of the company. He had other projects of course, major works you will relish today. In2010 The Addams Family became a Broadway hit and its hilarious songscontinue to dazzle audiences around the world. In 2013 his heart-rendingoratorio I Am Harvey Milk debuted at the San Francisco Gay Men’sChorus, one of my most moving moments in the theatre. Months later thepoignant family musical Big Fish opened on Broadway in a spectacularproduction. The range of Andrew’s music is astonishing, the wit of hislyrics enchanting, the depth of his humanity inspiring. If the world knows Andrew for his talent, TheatreWorks knows him forhis heart. Beginning with our 35th Anniversary Celebration in 2005, whichhe co-hosted with Wendy Wasserstein and Stephen Schwartz, Andrewhas been the featured guest at many major events. When we made him the artistic honoree at TW Honors in 2014, he flew in from Londonjust hours after closing in a show. That night I asked if we might bring that London production to America. Thanks to Andrew, and his brilliantcollaborator David Babani of the Menier Chocolate Factory, The Life ofthe Party is here today. Its subtitle, A Celebration of the Songs of AndrewLippa, hardly tells the full story. For TheatreWorks, it is a celebration ofAndrew the man, the artist, and the friend.
