This Fairtrade information brochure contains details of the retailers and cafes that sell Fairtrade products in the Forth Valley area and some tasty Fairtrade recipes. It has been produced jointly by Forth Valley College and Fair Trade Stirling with support from The Scottish Fair Trade Forum.

Whether you are a Fairtrade enthusiast or have just discovered it for the first time, the retailers within this brochure can supply fantastic everyday items and gift ideas for treating yourself or someonespecial.

Fairtrade is the world’s largest and most recognised ethical certification system. It has a strong and active presence within the UK and is represented by the Fairtrade Foundation.

By purchasing Fairtrade products, consumers are linking with the producers with the aim of reducing poverty through trade. Many of the products that we buy in shops and supermarkets are grown or produced by people who are not paid a fair price for their work and produce.

Fairtrade certification encompasses a range of standards that protect workers and farmers, changing the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions and a fair deal for farmers and workers in developing countries.

Buying Fair Trade products and incorporating them in our everyday lives can give Fair Trade producers a chance to sustain their livelihoods through meaningful work, not relying on handouts. Everyday people, like us, can make a positive impact on the lives of farmers and communities by the way we do our shopping.

Forth Valley College was the first college in Scotland to be awarded Fairtrade Status, in March 2011. They are committed to promoting the Fairtrade ethos and encourage Fair Trade teaching throughout their campuses.

The College takes responsibility for the impact of its actions on the community and its environment.

They promote social responsibil ity, which

enables all learners to contribute towards giving f a r m e r s i n d e v e l o p i n g countries a ‘hand

up instead of a hand out’.

FVC & Scottish Fair Trade Forum

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum is the national membership network organisation promoting Fair Trade across Scotland.

Established in January 2007 by a group of Fair Trade campaigners, Scotland-based non-governmental organisations and supported by the Scottish Government, the Scottish Fair Trade Forum was tasked with leading the effort to become one of the world’s first Fair Trade Nations. IN 2013, Scotland fulfilled the criteria to be declared the world’s second Fair Trade Nation and this status was renewed in 2017 which confirms the ongoing progress Scotland has made in its commitment to supporting and purchasing Fair Trade.

Key aspects of our work include:

• Engaging with partners and stakeholders such as the Scottish Government and Parliament to ensure that policies are in place which assist Fair Trade producers;

number of towns, villages, islands and council zoned areas dedicated to showing their commitment to Fairtrade.

Events and awareness raising sessions aimed at staff, students and the local community are organised throughout the year to promote Fairtrade. College refectories are stocked with Fairtrade products and all tea/coffee/hot chocolate and sugar are Fairtrade.

Fairtrade Recipes

Sweet & Sour PorkIngredients: • 500g (1lb) pork fillet, cut into small cubes• 2 tbsp rice wine or sherry• 1 tbsp light soy sauce• 2 tsp cornflour• 425g (14oz) Fairtrade pineapple• 1 tbsp sunflower oil• 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into cubes• 1 carrot, cut into thin strips• 1 bunch spring onions, sliced For the sauce• 1 tbsp tomato ketchup• 1 tbsp Fairtrade soft brown sugar• 1 tbsp light soy sauce• 2tbsp white wine vinegar• 2 tsp cornflour blended with 1 tbsp cold water Instructions

InstructionsPlace the pork in a bowl and add the sherry or rice wine and soy sauce.

Stir well and leave to marinate for 20 minutes. Stir in the cornflour. Drain the Fairtrade pineapple from the can and reserve the juice, cut into chunks. Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan and stir-fry the pork for 3-4 minutes until browned and cooked through with no pink showing. Remove from the pan.

Add the pepper, carrot, spring onion and pineapple chunks to the pan and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Mix the reserved pineapple juice with the sauce ingredients and add to the pan with the pork. Simmer for 3-4 minutes. Serve immediately with egg fried rice or noodles.

Pineapple Upside Down CakeIngredients: • 1 medium Fairtrade pineapple• 175g (6oz) butter• 175g (6oz) Fairtrade granulated sugar• 3 eggs• 175g (6oz) self-raising flour• 3 tbsp milk• 1 tbsp honey

InstructionsHeat the oven to gas 4, 180ºC, fan 160ºC Lightly butter a 25cm (10in) clip-release baking tin and line with nonstick baking paper.

Using a sharp knife, cut the top and base off the Fairtrade pineapple and cut away the skin. Cut the pineapple in half lengthways, remove core and discard. Slice pineapple thinly and arrange in the prepared cake tin.

Cream butter and sugar together until smooth, then add the eggs and whip into the mix. Fold in the flour quickly and gently, adding a little milk to lighten the mixture. Next spoon the mix over the pineapples and bake in the oven for 45 minutes.

Remove from the oven, allow to stand for 5 minutes, then carefully unclip the baking tin’s ring and remove. Sit a plate on the top of the tin and invert it with care, so that the cake is turned out onto the plate. Drizzle over the honey and serve.

What is the difference between Fairtrade, Fair Trade, fair trade and fairly traded?

Fairtrade refers to the mark or certification label given by the Fairtrade Foundation, in the UK, to products they can verify as adhering to their standards - please visit http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/en/for-business/ways-of-working-with-fairtrade/licensee-application/fairtrade-standards for more information. The standards are overseen globally by Fairtrade International.

Fair Trade is often used in two different ways. Firstly, ‘Fair Trade’ is often used to refer to the verification the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) and its Guarantee Scheme. Or . . .

Fair Trade is also used often to refer to the wider Fair Trade movement to secure better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. So, ‘Fair Trade’ can be used when referring to specific products with the WFTO verification and the wider movement in general.

fair trade is a broader term that refers to the general act of buying, selling or exchanging commodities in a way that is fair. It doesn’t necessarily imply the strict standards of Fair Trade.

fairly traded refers to products that have been fairly traded but currently do not have verification by either FLO or WFTO.
