    CLIENTPROFILE

Sysco Kansas City (SKC) is one of the 175+ subsidiaries

of Sysco, the largest food service marketing and

distribution organization in North America. Their Kansas

City location plays a vital role in delivering products

and services to customers across Kansas and Western

Missouri, where they are ranked number one.

Located in Olathe, Kansas, SKC employs more than 500

    employees at a facility that’s approximately 500,000

sq.ft. and stretches for nearly a quarter of a mile.

    DIPPED TO

Sysco Kansas City was struggling with some of the most significant and pervasive challenges in the food distribution industry: low retention rates, ongoing safety incidents, and declining employee engagement levels.

By 2016, the situation hit a breaking point. Despite investing heavily in a safety program, OSHA®-Recordable Incidents (ORIs), auto-claims, and driver-related incidents were occurring far too frequently.

Employee engagement also bottomed out. As a result, SKC was losing quality employees at an alarming rate. In October, the company retention rate dipped to -63.2%.

CHALLENGESManagement was committed to improving engagement, recognition, and safety at their location, yet the solutions they had in place were not delivering results.

Sysco Kansas City’s safety program failed to engage employees in a meaningful way. Employees were rushing through tasks without evaluating how their actions might impact their personal safety and that of their coworkers.

Ryan Farnsworth, Director of Transportation for Sysco Kansas City, realized that many of the safety incidents were preventable: “Some of the challenges we were facing were injuries and vehicle accidents...just guys getting into a hurry, and not really thinking about their overall safety when performing the job.”

The company’s existing recognition program was equally ineffective. Administering the plan was so time-consuming and complicated that managers were unable to effectively utilize the program. As a result, employee engagement – and retention rates – continued to decline.

In addition to being ineffective, SKC’s existing recognition and safety programs shared another commonality: they were static. Sysco Kansas City needed a program that could easily scale with their business’ evolving needs.

SOLUTIONSysco Kansas City realized they needed an easy-to-administer safety program that actively engaged their employees. To achieve this, they invested in People Are Everything® (PAE), C.A. Short Company’s employee engagement, recognition, and safety platform.

C.A. Short Company worked with Sysco Kansas City to determine important safety goals and identify the types of employee behavior that would help the organization reach their objectives. C.A. Short Company then customized the People Are Everything portal for Sysco Kansas City, so they could easily measure, reward, and encourage positive employee actions.

When managers observed an employee engaging in favorable activities – such as actively participating in a safety meeting – they awarded the employee with points. The employee could then exchange these points for the reward of their choice, ensuring that every award they receive is a memorable one.

With People Are Everything, point distribution isn’t limited to a top-down approach. In fact, co-workers can also recognize and reward each other for going above and beyond. This form of peer-to-peer recognition plays a vital role in creating safer and more engaged work environments.

The platform’s easy-to-use interface guaranteed that managers and coworkers could quickly and effectively interact with the program and recognize everyone for their contributions. This is what initially drew the eye of Larry Waters, Sysco Kansas City’s VP of Operations.

    According to Waters:

“We were looking for a program that was easier to manage, that our employees gained something from the program. So when we came up with C.A. Short, the main thing that caught my attention was the management piece of it – how easy it was to manage. It made it very easy to sell to management.”

RESULTSShortly after investing in People Are Everything, Sysco Kansas City began seeing significant improvements in their safety efforts. By February 2018, OSHA®-Recordable Injuries (ORI) decreased by 41% and auto-liability claims dropped by more than 50%. During that same period, driver incident rates also fell by 53%.

SKC was so pleased with People Are Everything, they have opted to use the PAE platform to manage their engagement and recognition efforts as well. They credit the PAE platform with boosting employee engagement levels and significantly improving company morale. After using PAE to engage and recognize all of their employees, Sysco Kansas City experienced an 83% improvement in retention.

Sysco Kansas City credits this success to People Are Everything’s innovative and easy-to-use platform, as well as C.A. Short’s ongoing support. SKC has been so impressed with the results achieved so far, that they recently invested in C.A. Short’s popular Milestone Award program. Looks like a long and productive partnership is ahead for SKC and C.A. Short. To quote Chris Volmer, SKC’s HR Business Partner “C.A. Short Company made us better.”

“C.A. Short Company made us better.”
