Solo Entertainment Italia, a Rome-based film distribution and licensing company,

has been launched by Christian Halsey Solomon who has operated in distribution since 1981. With a mandate to focus on acquisition and distribution of product for the various media platforms, the first three projects acquired by Solo include: The Eye 1 & 2, two Cantonese/Thai horror movies by cult-directing brothers Danny and Oxide Pang from Fortissimo Film Sales, and High Tension, starring Cesar award-winning actress Cecile de France and directed by Alexandre Aja, which was acquired from Luc Besson’s Europacorp and released very successfully in France last year. All three films will be released theatrically in Italy through Eagle Pictures. Solo expects to incorporate a TV arm into the operation utilizing the expertise of TV entrepreneur Michael Solomon. Formerly with Helkon-Halsey, Solomon moved to Italy last year to create Cinecitta Financial Consulting that provides financial consultancy and equity finance services at Rome’s Cinecitta Studios.

Eye 2 Solo

Recently established Capri Films Releasing, headed by president Tony Cianciotta,

and David Reckziegel, co-president of Seville Pictures, have entered into a two-year distribution deal for theatrical releases serving French and English Canada. Under the terms of the deal, Capri Films Releasing will service all Seville Pictures titles in English Canada with Seville releasing all Capri films in Quebec. Discussions between Reckziegel and Cianciotta began in early 2004 when producer Gabriella Martinelli, head of Capri Films, and Cianciotta set up the domestic releasing arm of Martinelli’s production outfit. Of

the partnership, Reckziegel says, “We have been wanting to work with ,Tony for many years and are very pleased to have entered into this relationship with both Tony and Gabriella. By combining the strengths of Capri and Seville we have created a stronger theatrical distribution entity in Canada.” Cianciotta adds, “We were looking for a way to secure a strong presence in Quebec and can be confident that Seville Pictures offers that. I have the utmost respect for David, Pierre Brousseau and John Hamilton. We have a had a great relationship with them over the years which will be further strengthened through working together.”

Lakeshore International is concluding final sales on Million Dollar Baby directed

by and starring Clint Eastwood. Also starring Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman in leading roles, Million Dollar Baby is produced by Clint Eastwood, Al Ruddy, Tom Rosenberg, and Paul Haggis. Lakeshore International Chief Executive Officer Peter Rogers announced a raft of high profile international distributors who snapped up the rights on the film. Studio Canal acquired the rights for France; Entertainment Film Distributors picked up the UK; newly created Movie Eye took Japan. In Italy, RAI Cinema snagged the rights; and Down Under, Village Roadshow took Australia/New Zealand. Across Europe, rights went to Filmax in Spain; Svensk Film Industry secured Scandinavia; A Film

bought Benelux; Lusomundo took Portugal and South Africa went to Mashatu. Lakeshore also concluded sales in Cannes to over 20 territories on The Truth About Love still shooting in the UK, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Dougray Scott and Jimi Mistry, directed by John Hay. Ladies In Lavender, the Charles Dance film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Daniel Bruhl, has deals in place with Entertainment Film Distributors in the UK, Nippon Herald: Japan, RAI Cinema: Italy, Filmax: Spain, Ster Kinekor for South Africa, Best Film: Poland, and Odeon in Greece.Nearing the end of a successful market, Lakeshore also picked up the international sales rights to the Demi Moore romantic thriller Half Light directed by Craig Rosenberg. Redbus Film Distribution is taking UK rights.

A Tribute To Brazilian Cinema has centered on the celebratory 40th anniversary screening of

Brazilian master filmmaker Glauber Rocha’s Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (Black God, White Devil), long considered one of finest examples of Latin cinema. The Tribute came about from an initiative between the Cannes Film Festival and the Rio Film Festival, represented at Cannes by executive director, Ilda Santiago. The Rio Film Festival (Festival do Rio), now firmly established as the leading film festival in Latin America bringing together local filmmakers and the international cinema community, partnered with the Cannes Film Festival 2004 to highlight the expanding outreach of Brazilian film in a 5 day showcase:

A Tribute to Brazilian Cinema – 40 Years of Cinema Novo.The Tribute, which ran from the 16th of May and ends today, saw some of the country’s leading filmmakers in Cannes for the official events. Brazil’s Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, attended the opening event screening of Bye Bye Brasil. Other leading Brazilians in Cannes were director Cacá Diegues, actor José Wilker, and producers Lucy and Luiz Carlos Barreto. A Tribute has acted as a platform to solidify the Latin contingent in the Producers Network. The Network hosts a working breakfast in association with the Marché International du Film May 20th at the Plage des Palmes. Now in its sixth year, the 2003 Rio Film Festival clocked up 210,000 admissions over 12 days, attracting an ever-growing number of cinema enthusiasts. The 2004 event runs 23rd September to 7th October. Prior to the Festival, executives Ilda Santiago and Walkiria Barbosa will take the festival spirit to New York for the second year with Premiere Brazil New York, a joint venture with the Museum of Modern Art that takes place at the Film Forum, 23-29 June.
