The importance of books in many people’s lives cannot be underrated. Many of us have a deep, emotional connection to at least one, if not many of the stories that we have engaged with over the years.
Often these connections are fostered in childhood. They certainly were for me. Books helped me figure out who I was
and my place in the world. When little else made sense I found myself belonging in the worlds of the books that I read as a young person.
In 2016, Word Play will open young hearts and minds to a world of inspiration and imagination, where they too may begin to find their own sense of self.

Welcome to Word Play 2016, Queensland’s favourite literary program for young people running from 7 – 9 September.
Part of the Brisbane Writers Festival, Word Play is presented annually as a prelude to the main festival, drawing in students from Prep to Year 12 and offering a diverse range of literary events.
In 2015, 14,384 people joined in 60 sessions for Word Play, with more than 3000 online participants connecting young readers, writers, publishers, illustrators and storytellers across the state.
This year Queensland’s children’s writer and illustrator Katherine Battersby’s
forthcoming book Little Wing will come to life during the festival as part of Alphabet Zoo, the annual immersive and interactive playscape for ages 3 – 8.
Word Play also welcomes Brisbane writer Samantha Wheeler, whose new book Mister Cassowary is set in Mission Beach and highlights the plight of endangered cassowaries in the wild.
My Government supports the Brisbane Writers Festival to present Word Play as a wonderful pathway for young people that instills a lifelong love of reading and writing, and grows the creative minds of our future.
