Many of us have a deep, emotional connection to at least one, if not many of the stories that we have engaged with over the years. Often these connections are fostered in childhood. They certainly were for me. Books helped me figure out who I was and my place in the world. When little else made sense I found myself belonging in the worlds of the books that I read as a young person. In 2016, Word Play will open young hearts and minds to a world of inspiration and imagination, where they too may begin to find their own sense of self. Welcome to Word Play 2016, Queensland’s favourite literary program for young people running from 7 – 9 September. Part of the Brisbane Writers Festival, Word Play is presented annually as a prelude to the main festival, drawing in students from Prep to Year 12 and offering a diverse range of literary events. Last year, 14,384 people joined in 60 sessions for Word Play, with more than 3,000 online participants connecting young readers, writers, publishers, illustrators and storytellers across the state. This year Queensland’s children’s writer and illustrator Katherine Battersby’s forthcoming book Little Wing will come to life during the festival as part of Alphabet Zoo, the annual immersive and interactive playscape for ages 3 – 8. Word Play also welcomes Brisbane writer Samantha Wheeler, whose new book Mister Cassowary is set in Mission Beach and highlights the plight of endangered cassowaries in the wild. Word Play is proudly presented by David Astle David Astle is a full-time word nerd. Many know him as the dictionary man on Letters and Numbers. Or just as DA, the devious crossword-setter in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Between puzzles, he’s written half a dozen wordy-nerdy books, including Riddledom, Cluetopia and Puzzled. Yassmin Abdel-Magied 2015 Queensland Young Australian of the Year, Yassmin Abdel-Magied is a mechanical engineer, social advocate, writer and petrol head. Her first book, Yassmin’s Story, was published this year and is a memoir sharing a different perspective about growing up in Australia. Tristan Bancks Tristan Bancks is a children’s and teen author with a background in acting and filmmaking. His books and short films have won several awards, and he’s recently released a weird-funny-gross collection of semi-autobiographical stories called My Life & Other Exploding Chickens. Lance Balchin Lance Balchin comes from a mixed background of art, fashion and skateboard photography. He holds a Masters in Arts and has also recently been admitted to practice law, but spends most of his time in front of a computer using digital tools in both portrait photography and illustration. Christopher Currie Christopher Currie is a writer and bookseller from Brisbane, whose fiction has appeared in anthologies and journals internationally. His first book, for adults, The Ottoman Motel, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Queensland Literary Awards. Clancy of the Undertow is his first novel for young adults. Maxine Beneba Clarke Maxine Beneba Clarke is author of the poetry collection Carrying The World, the memoir The Hate Race and the short fiction collection Foreign Soil, which won major awards. Her children’s picture book, The Patchwork Bike, will be published late 2016. Melina Marchetta Melina Marchetta’s novels have been published in 20 countries. She has won the Children’s Book Council Award twice, the US Printz Award, has been longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award, shortlisted for the inaugral 2015 Sara Douglass Book Series Award and won various awards for the screenplay adaptation of her novel Looking for Alibrandi. David Levithan David Levithan is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of YA books, including Every Day, How They Met, Two Boys Kissing, You Know Me Well (with Nina LaCour) and Will Grayson, Will Grayson (with John Green). He lives in New Jersey, editing and publishing other people’s books in New York. Katherine Battersby Katherine Battersby is the critically acclaimed children’s author and illustrator of Squish Rabbit, published in Australia, the USA and China. Her picture books have been shortlisted and awarded in international awards. She grew up by the North Queensland beach and currently divides her time between Brisbane and Canada. Lee Battersby Lee Battersby is the author of the novels Magrit, The Corpse-Rat King and Marching Dead. He has over 70 short stories published internationally, and a published collection, Through Soft Air. He’s obsessed with Lego, Nottingham Forest Football Club, dinosaurs and Daleks. Michael Gerard Bauer Michael Gerard Bauer is one of Australia’s best loved children’s authors. Many of his award-winning publications for younger readers, including the Eric Vale series, are fully illustrated by his young film-maker son, Joe Bauer. A bit about the Artists bwf.org.au Ted Prior Ted Prior previously worked as a police officer and an art teacher. He also worked in children’s TV and animation. In 1979 he started his Grug series of children’s picture books. Samantha Wheeler Samantha worked with farmers and taught science before turning to writing in 2011. Packed with animals and adventure, her children’s books include Smooch & Rose (shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards), Spud & Charli and Mister Cassowary. Samantha hopes her stories will inspire everyone to make a difference. Jaclyn Moriarty Jaclyn Moriarty writes YA novels, including the internationally best- selling Feeling Sorry for Celia, Finding Cassie Crazy and the Colours of Madeleine trilogy. The first book in that trilogy, A Corner of White, and the second, The Cracks in the Kingdom, have won significant awards. The finale, A Tangle of Gold, was recently released. Mark Smith Mark Smith lives on Victoria’s Surf Coast where he writes and runs outdoor education programs for young adults. His writing has won a number of awards and has appeared in Best Australian Stories, Review of Australian Fiction and The Big Issue. The Road to Winter is his first book. Meg Rosoff Meg Rosoff’s debut novel, How I Live Now, garnered the sort of rave acclaim most writers only ever dream of. She has gone on to write several award-winning books for teenagers including Just in Case, What I Was and The Bride’s Farewell. Rebecca Sparrow Over the past two decades Rebecca Sparrow has been a travel writer, a magazine editor, a newspaper columnist, a tv scriptwriter and a novelist. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am – 4.30pm.

Word Play tickets sell quickly, so book early to secure a place

for your students or child.

Brisbane Writers Festival reserves the right to alter the program and artists and

to cancel sessions where necessary. No refunds or exchanges are possible once

bookings are complete and payment received unless Brisbane Writers Festival

has cancelled your session. Program details are correct at time of printing.

Each booking includes complimentary entry for one teacher/adult per 5 – 14 students and

two teachers/adults per 15 – 30 students. Please note that there is no allocated seating.

The Online Literature Festival connects Word Play writers with students and

educators in classrooms across Queensland. Sessions are presented by

the Brisbane Writers Festival in partnership with eLearning, Department of

Education and Training.
