The semester has now started at my university, which means students are back on campus and with them comes a corresponding increase in activity. The same appears to be true in our Dance Community.

In the last issue there was very little to report or share with you, whereas in this issue there is quite a lot! In this issue of the R&S, you can read about recent losses as well as celebrations and lots of upcoming events. Happy Reading!

walk-throughs of the unfamiliar dances, and off we went. Dancers were ably accompanied by Julie and Steve Wyrick on piano and fiddle. Throughout the afternoon Lori, together with Bruce Herbold, Patti Cobb, Julie and Steve Wyrick gave us the backstory to each dance and the music. We had time for en-cores, and with a timely shoutout, time to shuffle our cars to avoid a parking ticket.

After a break to enjoy the glorious sunshine and substantial potluck spread outside, we squeezed back into the hall to remember Greg. We sat on chairs or sat on the floor. We stood in doorways or somewhere we could watch "The Spurtle King" a video made about Greg by Viki Lewis. We learned more about Greg: family man, husband, singer, gui-tar player, friend, neighbor. One by one, attendees shared remembrances and stories of how beloved Greg was for each of us and within our community, and how much we love and want to support Olga.

For those who were inclined, Lori called us back to the dance floor for more dancing. We danced a beautiful tribute waltz for Greg composed by a thoughtful, talented young musician, Jared Bailey. The emotional afternoon ended with Eleanor Vandegrift reading “An Honest Man Here Lies,” by Robert Burns, followed by Lori and Mark Caplan leading us in a final set of remembrances for Greg.

(Greg, Continued from page 1)

Huge thanks to everyone involved in the planning and organizing of this beautiful memorial event, especially Lori, Michael, Patti and Bruce. Special thanks to musicians Julie and Steve. Kudos to Viki and all her team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the video happen. And most of all, sincere thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated the life of Greg Reznick. Saturday, June 30th 2018 was a poignant and fitting tribute to an amazing person who touched so many of us, and whose passing leaves a huge gap in all our lives, and in the Scottish country dance scene.

Andy Imbrie and friends, offered their sprung-floor dance hall and adjacent patio for such a party. Bud’s health has prevented them from having their summer parties for some years now, but they felt that such a party could be a morale boost. Gene himself even showed up the day before the party to join the work party in moving furniture and rolling up carpeting to prepare for the next day.

On July 14th, dancers and old friends gathered in the after-noon to convey their birthday wishes to Gene Bissell and catch up with each other’s news. Many old friends have not danced for some years now, but were able to visit and enjoy the wonderful music. The dancers had a terrific time and the music was spectacular. The musicians (pictured on the right) were Andy Imbrie, Sherryl Fawx, Janet Kurnick, Su-san Worland and Michael Bentley. Following the dancing everyone enjoyed a huge spread of many dishes, a potluck choreographed by Kathleen McAdam.

One high point was Don MacQueen’s surprise presentation of the Branch Award, which was signed by Don as Branch Committee Chair, and by Helen Russell, RSCDS Chair. This award is given to someone who has upheld the objec-tives of the Society over a period of years; who has shown sustained and exceptional commitment to the promotion of Scottish Country Dancing; and who has been responsible for some notable achievements in relation to Scottish Coun-try Dancing; in other words, a rare honor!

Another high point was an enormous chocolate cake, pro-vided by Jan Harford, Gene’s niece, attesting to the fact that Gene is a chocoholic.

Eugene Bissell is an

inspiration to all of us!

TAC Summer School, Minneapolis by Charlotte Greig

The Scottish Country Dance Teachers' Association (Canada) or TAC, hosts a Scottish Country Dance Summer School and a Teacher's Conference Weekend every year at different locations in Canada or the USA. This year, both were held in the midwest, at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. While the Teacher's Conference is open only to SCD teachers, Summer School is always open to Scottish Country dancers of any ability or level.

I was one of fourteen San Francisco Branch members who journeyed to the Land of 10,000 Lakes for a great week of dancing and socializing. Pictured at Satur-day’s formal evening Ball are (left to right): Sheena MacQueen, Gary Thomas, Jared Bailey, Marjorie McLaughlin, Ron Wallace, Trina Merriman, Therese Volk, Martha Veranth, Ethan Bailey, Janelle Waldrep, Lin Pettengill, Levi Bailey and last, me. Not pictured is Susan Zacharias.

TAC really does a fabulous job of organizing this an-nual event and its associated offerings. This year, the Registrar was Branch member Marjorie McLaughlin. Bay Area teachers Lin Pettengill and Trina Merriman also MC'd dances and taught a Ball preview session. Gary Thomas continues as TACSound Manager, and Ron Wallace was an Examiner for the Teacher Candi-date programs.

Summer School usually kicks off with a Social dance on Sunday evening, and thereafter, there are daily morning and optional af-ternoon classes followed by dancing or evening activities. A number of the evening dances are themed events. Monday night was "Local Favorites" night so the Twin Cities Dancers suggested the wearing of plaid in celebration of lumberjacks, or blue for all the blue lakes. Tuesday was "Bling" night in celebration of TAC's 60th Anniversary. Saturday evening was the formal banquet and Ball. This year, we also enjoyed an evening program of Contra dancing, complete with walk-throughs and a caller, and a night of Ceilidh acts. Our Branch members Ethan, Jared and Levi Bailey, Marjorie McLaughlin and Martha Verdanth treated us to some extraordinary highland dancing, magic tricks and music! I, for one, can't wait to enjoy some more from these talented individuals during Asilomar's Ceilidh.

Our wonderful teachers this year were Ellie Briscoe (USA), Antoine Rousseau (France) and Jody Kulas (Canada). All brought their unique focus to their classes. Our musi-cians were Terry Traub and Tul-lochgorum: Barbara McOwen, Anne Hooper, Robert McOwen and Campbell Webster, along with Can-ada's Laird Brown and Don Wood. We danced to spectacular music all week. In addition, Barbara McOwen offered an afternoon class for musi-cians.

Did I also enjoy the opportunity to visit family, a day at an Internation-al Softball Tournament and some time at Wayzata, on Lake Min-netonka? You betcha! I crammed in as much as I could on this trip. On campus, it was fun to explore some of the many libraries and museums, and of course, catch up with dance friends, new and old. What a great experience TAC was. For 2019, TAC's Summer School will be held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Jimmie continued working with Stewart Smith in Los Angeles and in San Francisco in the early days of the SF Branch. He became a very successful Highland Dance compet-itor throughout the U.S. and Canada in the 1960s and 1970s, including being a frequent winner at the Santa Rosa Games (predecessor to the Pleasanton Games).

After finishing his competitive Highland career, Jimmie turned his attention to Scottish Country Dancing. He completed his RSCDS teaching certificate in the 1980s and en-joyed much success as a workshop teacher and dance choreographer. He ultimately became the artistic director of the “Scottish Dance Ensemble” and later “Celtic Spirit” performance groups in the Los Angeles area.

Jimmie encouraged and mentored dancers – both Highland and Scottish Country Dance – for many years. His love for Scottish Dancing was evident by observing him or talk-ing to him at a Highland Dance competition or at a Scottish Country dance. His love and passion for Scottish dance and music was infectious.

It was Jimmie’s hope to be remembered as having made a difference in the world of dance. There is no doubt that Jimmie left his mark in both the Highland and Scottish Country Dance worlds. Thank you, Jimmie, for sharing your love of Scottish dance and music with so many of us, thank you for being an inspiration to all dancers, thank you for having faith in those who could not find faith in themselves, thank you for the many trophy and monetary contributions you donated in the name of love to Highland and Country Dance organizations all over the world, and thank you for the honor of know-ing you!

It has now been 10 months and we feel like we are just emerging from an extended state of shock. We can’t begin to express how much the kindness and generosity,

through the fire-victims benefit, meant to us. We were shocked and grateful at the amount of money we received but of even greater impact was the feeling of love and support that meant we were not alone and so cared for in a very dark time in our lives.

Much love back to you all and THANK YOU!
